...Amazing Turn Around...

JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED: We needed a distinct break from wet
weather and we got it in a big way. September and October were
extremely wet. So much so that crops were eventually damaged from
excessive rain amounts. As of today, Birmingham has received 60.23
inches of rain so far this year—an amazing excess of over 15 inches.

So now, our weather does a complete 180 and we are looking for an
extended period of clear dry weather with cool nights and pleasant
daytime temperatures. There is a good chance that we will go all this
week with no chance of rain. There may be a slight chance early next
week. This will give us a great chance to dry out and let swollen
streams decline. It was cool across the state this morning. Some of
the lowest temperatures were around 34 in NE Alabama. The next several
nights will be cool with lows generally in the low to mid 40s.

EXCEPTIONAL VISIBILITY: Every weather station in the USA reports
visibility every hour. In earlier days, the hourly weather
observations were taken by humans, however most of them are now
automated. I remember when I was in the USWB that often Colorado
Springs would report visibility 100 miles. They had a good view of the
front range of the Rockies. The most we could report in Birmingham was
15+ because we could only report twice the distance to the farthest
landmark. Often it was much greater. For example, today I believe you
could see at least 60 miles.

AROUND THE USA: Another weak front will push into our area Tuesday
morning, but it will simply restock us with dry air and good weather.
Another interesting point: this morning you could fly all the way from
Birmingham to San Diego and see no clouds. The coldest in the USA this
morning was 16 at Big Piney and Pinedale, Wyoming and 16 below at
Arctic Village, Alaska. Hottest Sunday was 94 at Rialto, California.

STORM ALERT XTREME: That comes up on Saturday, November 14 at the
BJCC during the annual Birmingham
International Auto Show. You can get some excellent Skywarn training.
It starts at 9:30 and ends at 3:30. It is completely free and everyone
that attends also can have free admission to the Auto Show.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure wish you could have seen Little
Miss Molly when all the trick-or-treaters came by. We had about 30
youngsters during the evening ringing the doorbell. For some strange
reason, Little Miss Molly thinks she should be the best friend and
guardian of every little kid. She especially likes children. I finally
had to put the leash on her and hold her back just inside the door
while the majority owner dished out the goodies. We did let her just
outside the door once to greet a little girl who wanted to pet her,
otherwise she would have been jumping all over them and probably
frightening them. Molly was a nervous wreck when it was all over. Last
night she jumped a rabbit just outside our house and came close to
jerking me off my feet. Yesterday, on a morning walk, I could see much
further than she can and I noticed the CR (Community Rabbit) had grown
quite a bit and was almost old enough to go to college. He was sitting
alongside the walking track soon after sunrise. He saw me long before
Miss Molly could see him and he jumped back into the hedgerow like a
kangaroo. No telling what we could find in that hedgerow—all kinds of
birds and we know of one hawk. Life goes on. Little Miss Molly never
lets us have a dull moment.
