...Sky Show This Week...

One of my favorite television shows was Jack Horkheimer's Star Gazer.
I am not sure you can still see it on television anymore. But you can
see it on the Internet, and this week, he promises a tremendous sky
show. The weather should cooperate at least a little here in Central
Alabama. Instead of being an evening show, it will be an early
morning one. Go outside about 30 minutes before sunrise, which will
be around 6:30 this week. If you have a somewhat level view of the
eastern horizon, you will get a view of three planets. You will see
the biggest and brightest planet, Jupiter and the two smallest,
Mercury and Mars. In the morning, Jupiter will be very close to Mars,
low on the horizon. Mercury will be a short distance away, up and to
the right. The trip will do a celestial dance this week and be joined
by a gorgeous crescent moon by the end of the week.

LET"S LOOK AT THE WEATHER: Today will feature a cloudy start, but
increasing sunshine, but seasonably cool temperatures thanks to cold
air advection. Rain will be ending from the west across south central
section of the state. We could see a shower early across The I-20
corridor, but it doesn't look likely. Highs today will be in the
middle 50s. Look for readings near freezing overnight tonight.
Monday will be maybe even a degree or two cooler with a continued flow
of cool air, despite near total sunshine.

MIDWEEK SYSTEM: Tuesday will feature increasing southerly winds and
a gradually moderation in temperature. Highs will top out in the
lower 60s. Those southerly winds will bring a substantial moisture
return, and this means showers and storms will re-enter the picture.
As a tandem of upper level disturbances swing though, we will see
periods of showers and storms starting late Tuesday night and lasting
into Wednesday. No problems are expected late Tuesday night, but as
the second disturbance and a strong cold front pushes our way on
Wednesday, storms could be on the strong side. As is usually the
case, instability is an issue in severe weather in late winter
situations, but it doesn't appear moisture will be lacking. Upper
winds will be very strong again, so there will be plenty of shear.
If we get some breaks in the clouds Wednesday, we could have some
problems. The orientation of the trough could be in our favor,
though. If it stays positively tilted, it could help to limit the
severe potential. But we are getting ready to move into prime severe
weather season in Alabama and the situation will have to be watched.

Colder air will spill into the state by Wednesday night and Thursday.
There could be a few sprinkles Thursday morning and highs may stay in
the 40s during the day. We will have a solid freeze Friday morning
and again on Sunday morning as a reinforcing shot of cold air arrives.

RACE WEATHER: Rain will plague the running of the 51st annual
Daytona 500 today in Florida. Showers will be likely at race time.
Temperatures will be in the
upper 60s. Hopefully, the race will be run on Sunday. If not,
conditions will be fine on Monday.

BOMBING OUT: A "meteorological bomb" exploded in the Atlantic
southeast of Newfoundland. The term is used to describe a storm that
rapidly intensifies over the ocean. On this date in 1982, the storm
in the Atlantic had winds of 100 mph and huge 50-foot seas. The storm
sunk at least two major ships, killing over 100 sailors and
overturning an oil rig.

...Happy Valentine's Day...

Happy Valentine's Day to everyone out there today. I hope that you
have a chance to tell your Valentine what he or she means to you on
this special day. The weather is not perfect for Valentine's Day
across Central Alabama, but it's not bad either. Let's look into the
forecast.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: A surface low is over eastern Kentucky with a
trailing cold front that is moving through Central Alabama. Another
surface low was near New Orleans. In the upper levels of the
atmosphere, we find basically zonal, or flat west to east flow across
the southern tier of states. A disturbance in the flow is near
Denver. These are the players in our weather for the short run.

TONIGHT/SUNDAY: Some drier air is working our way from northern
Mississippi and western Tennessee this afternoon. This will allow for
the sun to break
through at times before sunset. But clouds will remain fairly thick
through the overnight as the Colorado disturbance heads our way. It
will trigger another round of showers and storms over South Alabama
tonight and Sunday morning. Further north in Central Alabama, there
could be a few scattered showers, but rainfall coverage will be small
and rainfall amounts will be negligible. The upper disturbance will
slide by tomorrow and as it does, our upper flow will become
northwesterly, giving us drier air for the start to the week. Lows
tonight will drop to near 40 degrees across Central Alabama. Look for
highs in the lower and middle 50s tomorrow.

THE WEEK AHEAD: By Monday morning, readings will be near freezing
across Central Alabama. The day should dawn sunny and chilly.
Temperatures will warm into the middle and upper 50s during the
afternoon. A large surface high to our north will shift southeastward
on Monday, turning our flow around to the south and allowing moisture
to return. Looking out over the eastern Pacific, we see a big upper
trough getting ready to swing onshore over the western United States.
This system will progress eastward in the week ahead. Look for a
disturbance to eject into Colorado Monday, spinning up a low over the
Plains states.

This low will move northeast and rain and storms will move into
Alabama late Tuesday night. They will continue into Wednesday as a
second disturbance serves
to deepen the upper trough further. This spells colder air for the
end of the week. There could even be a few snow flurries Thursday
morning over the Tennessee Valley. Look for a solid freeze Thursday
night. As a reinforcing shot of cold air arrives on Saturday
morning, there could be enough moisture to wring out a few sprinkles
or even snow flurries over Northeast Alabama. Winter is not through
with us just yet.

ON THIS DATE IN 1895: An amazing coastal low brought record snow from
the Texas coast northeastward to Louisiana and eastward into southern
Georgia and northern Florida. The 24 inches of snow that fell in
Rayne, Louisiana (only 50 miles inland from the Gulf,) is the state's
all time single storm record. 15.4 inches fell in Galveston, with up
to 20-22 inches in the area around Houston. Twenty two inches fell in
Lake Charles, Louisiana with 15 inches in Cameron. Deep in Cajun
country, Houma, Louisiana recorded 16 inches. Two inches fell at the
mouth of the Mississippi River at Port Eads. Other all time records
included: 12.5 inches in Baton Rouge and 8.5 inches in New Orleans.
The snow extended into southern Mississippi, when 8.6 inches fell at
Hattiesburg and 6.2 inches at Biloxi. Mobile recorded its all time
record snow with 6 inches.

...Not the Best Valentine Weather...

NO BITTER COLD IN SIGHT: This may not be the most pleasant day to
spend with your valentine, because part of today will be wet. We do
not foresee any severe weather, probably just some intermittent rain
that will end by this afternoon. However, clouds will move back in
later tonight leading to a slight chance of rain again Sunday morning.
Finally, a cold front will get rid of most of the clouds later Sunday
leaving us will almost all sunshine on Monday. Toward midweek, we
should have some more showers about Wednesday. We still do not look for
any onslaught of bitter cold arctic air from the great North Country,
Alaska and NW Canada.

There is some cold air up there, but conditions are not favorable to
ship it all the way to the Deep South in the near future. For the next
several days, our lowest temperature here in Central Alabama should be
near or slightly below freezing Tuesday morning. See our day-by-day
forecast for all of the details. Rain gradually spread into South
Alabama yesterday afternoon and by nightfall most of the state was
getting wet. The amounts were quite light over the north half of the
state. At one point early Friday afternoon, a Severe Thunderstorm
Warning was posted for parts of Mobile and Baldwin Counties, so they
also received some of the heaviest rain. About ½ inch fell at Mobile
Regional Airport and 0.66 in downtown Mobile at Brookley Field. Dothan
was one of the warmest spots in the state Friday afternoon with 75.

GLOBAL ROAMING: The Rio Grande Valley of South Texas has been almost
like summer lately. The old thermometer climbed to 93 at Edinburg,
Texas Friday afternoon. That temperature is about 2 degrees hotter
than the average for mid-summer in Central Alabama.

The coldest in Alaska Friday was 35 below zero at Barrow on the north
shore. That seems mild compared to some bitter temperatures of 60
below zero or worse several weeks ago.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure did get a kick out of an e-mail I
received from a gentleman after surmising a few days ago that Molly
may be halfway through her life. He suggested that I have Molly cloned
and to get the money he suggested setting up a Clone Molly Fund,
especially since it costs well over $100,000. I would love to have
another Little Miss Molly, but that is not the same as the original.
Life goes on and I hope for many years.

...Valentine's Forecast...

Quick change weather will be the highlight as we head into this
Valentine's Day weekend in Central Alabama. However, weather will not
be an excuse tomorrow night to not celebrate your sweetie with a nice
dinner. Things should dry out nicely after some overnight rains
tonight across the area.

THIS AFTERNOON: Clouds were increasing across Central Alabama this
afternoon ahead of our next weather maker. Temperatures are well into
the 60s. Looking back to the southwest, radars have been active all
morning across Louisiana and are now spreading across Mississippi as
showers and storms continue along a northward moving warm front. This
system will mean rain for us tonight.

RAIN OVERNIGHT, FEW RUMBLES OF THUNDER: Showers will reach western
sections of Alabama late this afternoon. Rain will spread across the
area tonight. There could be a few embedded thunderstorms from time
to time. The best chances for rain will come from about 8 p.m. until
8 a.m. There could be some severe weather along the Gulf Coast late
this afternoon and overnight, but nothing for us to worry about here.
Rainfall amounts will average one quarter to one half inch.
Temperatures will be in the 50s.

FOR YOUR SATURDAY: Rain will be moving out Saturday morning, leaving
mostly cloudy skies. We will see some peeks of sunshine during the
afternoon with highs topping out in the middle 60s. Look for 40s here
Saturday night as you celebrate Valentine's night. Rain will be more
persistent across South Alabama on Saturday and even into Sunday as
another disturbance slides through. Parts of South Alabama could
receive as much two inches of rain could fall this weekend. A few
showers could work their way into Central Alabama Saturday night and
early Sunday.

SUNDAY/MONDAY: Sunday and Monday look dry and cool with a mix of
clouds and sun. Temperatures will be seasonably cool for February,
maybe a couple of degrees below average, especially on Monday. Highs
will be in the 50s. Lows will be in the 30s.

NEXT WEATHER MAKER: Many spots will be near freezing or below on
Tuesday morning, but southerly winds will start to return moisture
during the day as an upper disturbance and surface low pass to our
north and northwest. It looks like we will see a band of showers and
storms Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Earlier, it had looked
like there was some small potential for severe weather with this
system, but recent model runs have downplayed that. Wednesday should
see the rain departing and Thursday looks sunny and cool. Uncertainty
abounds for the weekend. It had looked cool and dry, but the models
have recently hinted at another wet weather system from Friday. We
will have to wait and see.

LONG RANGE LOOK: The crystal ball indicates that we will see a trend
to colder over the last half of the month with the NAO staying
negative. The models bear this out, with troffiness in the East. But
no really cold air intrusions are in sight, at least for now.

BIRMINGHAM'S COLDEST DAY: Birmingham recorded its coldest temperature
ever on this date in 1899 with a reading of –10 degrees. At the time,
the observations were taken at the old Fountain Heights weather
office. Records were kept in an old beat up journal. Handwritten
notes on this date indicated that the temperature in outlying areas
around Birmingham was –14. If the reading had been taken at the
current observation post at the airport, it would have surely been –
14. If readings had been kept in Pinson then, (normally coldest in
Birmingham area) it is safe to bet that the reading there would have
been –17! Other Alabama lows that cold morning: -1 in Mobile; 7
below in Tuscaloosa, Elba and Opelika; -5 in Greensboro; -11 in
Florence; -12 in Decatur; -15 in Oneonta; -16 in Hamilton and
Scottsboro and –18 in Valley Head. Greensboro had 5 inches of snow
on the ground. More on the blog today.

...More Rain Late Today And Tonight...

THE ALABAMA STORY: It was February 13, 1899. I wonder what Alabamians
were thinking? People were waking up to the coldest weather of their
lifetime. At Birmingham, the temperature dropped to 10 below zero.
Official records at that time were taken downtown. There was no such
think as the airport weather station and no records from places like
Pinson. In the NWS Office at 11 West Oxmoor Road, we had those
official records at one time. They were crude by the standards today,
in fact, the records were scribbled by hand into a journal with about
12 days of record on one page. There were no hourly observations. I
did notice that the observer had scribbled in red ink on the February
13 data that in some outlying areas of Birmingham people had called in
temperatures of 13 and 14 below zero.

If Pinson records were available then, I feel sure we would have had
15 or 16 below. It had to be a great shock, because early that month
temperatures were in the mid 70s and later after the cold wave
temperatures again reached the 60s and 70s. That had to be the mother
of all cold waves or possibly the grandmother of all cold waves.

BACK TO THE PRESENT: Not a real easy forecast over the next few days
due to the swings between dry weather and rain. Most of today will be
pleasant with a high in the60s. Clouds will gradually increase. We
could even see a few showers later in the day, but there should be an
increase in showers tonight with possibly a thunderstorm mixed in. We
do not think this will be a severe weather event. The rain should end
fairly early Saturday morning with the sun breaking through for the
rest of the day. Sunday and Monday should be partly sunny with cool
nights and tolerable days. Our coolest morning should be next Tuesday
in the mid 30s and showers will increase again by around Tuesday
night. Temperatures reached well into the 60s across North Alabama
yesterday and even some 70s down south. A nice warm 76 in Dothan. We
look for highs in the mid 60s today.

GLOBAL ROAMING: It is so tragic that the ice storm country had to
endure extremely high winds Wednesday—the same day we were having high
winds in Alabama. Gusts were as high as 70 mph in parts of Northern
Kentucky still recovering from a historic ice storm. Very high winds
occurred all the way into the northeast. USA temperature extremes
Thursday included a low of 49 below zero at Point Lay, Alaska to a
high of 86 at Laredo, Texas and Palm Beach, California.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: In the Thursday afternoon edition, I
mentioned that Molly was 6 years old and could be halfway through her
life. I made an error. She is not 6 until next August. I got scolded,
by several people, for thinking that way. Several mentioned that Molly
should live to 16 or older. I sure hope so. I need her every day. Life
goes on.

...Weather Better Behaved...

MORE RAIN LATER FRIDAY: There is an old saying that has floated
around as long as I can remember that if you do not like Alabama
weather, just wait a few hours. Take it from me you hear that same
saying, or a close resemblance, in just about every place you go in
the country. It is true that weather changes. Weather systems in the
USA move generally west to east and we weather humans turn our eyes in
a generally westerly direction more than any other.
So, we have introduced some more showers later Friday. Those should
become more extensive Friday night, but ending Saturday morning. Could
even be a few thunderstorms thrown in Friday night. This does not look
like a severe weather event.

The weekend looks fairly comfortable and from Saturday afternoon
through Sunday should be dry with highs in the upper 50s and lower
60s. Monday should be a
little cooler, but also dry.

YESTERDAY: I have been involved in weather for quite a few years.
Yesterday got my attention because I have never seen that many severe
thunderstorm warnings and even a tornado watch when there was
virtually no lightning. That long line of heavy showers had low tops,
thus no lightning, yet the wind was high enough to cause scattered
damage over a wide area.

STORM ALERT 2009: The entire ABC 33/40 weather crew will be in Jasper
tonight at the CHS Building downtown. That is a great facility. The
doors open at 5:00, the program starts at 7:00 and will be over by
8:15. Come early for a good seat. Next Thursday night, the 19th, the
Storm Alert crew will be at the Oxford Civic Center. That place always
draws a huge crowd.

GLOBAL ROAMING: I believe when all of the stories are in, the recent
ice storm in Kentucky is going to be their worst weather disaster of
all time. It was an awesome storm. It was great to see the temperature
get up to the lower 70s as recent as Thursday in Louisville. Their
high was 66 yesterday and they expect 55 today. The warmest in all of
the USA yesterday was 86 at Alice, Texas and Punta Gorda, Florida. In
the lower 48, coldest this morning was 13 below at Stanley, Idaho
nestled in the Sawtooth Mountains. I know I have said this before, but
the last time we were there camping on the Salmon River banks a few
miles from town, both the population and speed limit for Stanley was
35. Coldest in Alaska this morning was 49 below at Atqasuk. A few
sample snow depths from Alaska included 47 inches at Valdez, 27 inches
at Whittier and 32 inches at Nome.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our beloved '96 Oldsmobile was in the
shop for a few days meaning our garage was empty. Little Miss Molly is
so intelligent that if she sees the garage empty, one of us must be
gone. It puzzled her that we are both still here but no car. I am
longing for the day that my IQ matches hers. She got her usual 30-
minute rubdown after going to bed last night. She has become so
accustomed to that, that it is a must. I wish you could have seen her
when her boyfriend, the young Yorkie, came by. She almost goes berserk
because she is so deeply in love with him. They love each other and go
round and round like a merry-go-round playing. Molly is now 6 years
old and it concerns me a bit that her life may be half over.

...Sunshine Returns To Alabama...

MORE QUICK CHANGES AHEAD: Today will be a delightful February day in
Alabama, with a sunny sky and a mild afternoon. Most communities will
enjoy a high somewhere between 64 and 69 this afternoon with low
humidity and excellent visibility. But, a fast upper air flow across
the southern U.S. will more rapid weather changes in the days ahead.
Clouds will return late tonight, and we will bring in a good chance of
rain at times tomorrow and tomorrow night. At this time it looks
like rain amounts around 1/2 inch can be expected, and while a
thunderstorm is not out of the question, we don't expect any severe
weather problems this time.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: The rain should end during the pre-dawn hours on
Saturday, and we expect the sky to become partly sunny Saturday
afternoon as dry air returns to the state. Still no Arctic air; the
high Saturday should be in the low 60s. Sunday, slightly cooler air
slips into the state on northerly winds at the surface, with highs
back in the mid 50s. Sunday should feature a good supply of sunshine
as dry air continues to cover the state.

NEXT WEEK: At this point, it looks like the next chance of rain will
come either Tuesday or Tuesday night of next week; too early to
determine if there will be any severe weather problems. And, at this
point we still don't see any seriously change to cold weather through
the end of next week. But remember, winter still has a long way to go,
and we will have several more good cold snaps before the warmer days
of spring arrive in Alabama.

OKLAHOMA TORNADO RATED EF4: The tornado that roared through the
community of Lone Grove, Oklahoma Tuesday night was rated EF4 by a NWS
survey team yesterday. The death toll from that tornado is nine; at
least 50 people were injured. Many more could have been killed without
the excellent warning
provided by the NWS in Oklahoma City for the storm.

WINDY DAY IN ALABAMA: No major structural damage was reported in
Alabama as a band of showers and storms swept across the state. The
highest winds were actually not directly involved with the storms; it
was all about the pressure gradient. We measured a wind gust of 58 mph
at our SKYCAM site atop the Daniel Building in downtown Birmingham;
winds atop Mount Cheaha gusted to 55 mph. There were scattered reports
of tree and power line damage.

STORM ALERT 2009 TONIGHT: We will be in Walker County tonight as our
annual severe weather awareness tour rolls along. The show is at 7:00
at the CHS building in downtown Jasper, and the doors open at 5:00.
Come meet the ABC 33/40 weather team, and learn more about Alabama's
crazy weather!

...Severe Weather Possible Today...

ACTIVE WEATHER DAY: A number of parameters are in place for the
possibility of severe weather across Alabama today: very strong wind
fields (both at the surface and aloft), veering of the wind within the
lower 5 kilometers of the atmosphere, and a relatively unstable
airmass (cold air aloft with warmer air at the surface). We believe
severe storms could move into West Alabama as early as mid-morning,
the sweeping across the state, reaching Birmingham around the lunch
hour, and then into the Anniston area by mid-afternoon.

At this point it looks like the greatest threat will come from
damaging straight line winds, but with the strongly sheared
environment we cannot rule out a few isolated tornadoes. So, it is
likely that severe weather watches and warnings will be required
today, and everybody should be a in a position to hear them. The
greatest risk of severe weather will be along and north of I-20, but
we can't rule out a few isolated severe storms south of Birmingham.
Drier air will return quickly tonight with a clearing sky, and
tomorrow will be a much brighter and and calmer day with ample
sunshine. There is no cold air following today's storm system, so
temperatures will remain mild with a high in the mid 60s tomorrow
afternoon.

MORE QUICK CHANGES: Clouds return quickly on Friday, and we will
forecast periods of rain Friday afternoon into Friday night with the
next impulse moving along the fast upper flow across the southern U.S.
Looks like this system will bring rain totals between one-quarter and
one-half inch. The rain will end after midnight Friday night.

THE WEEKEND: The sky will become partly sunny on Saturday as drier air
returns to the state; at this point it looks like the high will be in
the low 60s. Slightly cooler air will filter into Alabama from the
north on Sunday, with highs dropping back into the 50s. The weather
should remain dry Sunday with only scattered clouds.

YESTERDAY'S SEVERE WEATHER: A major tornado outbreak erupted yesterday
and last night in the general area from Oklahoma City south to the
Dallas/Fort Worth area. A large violent tornado was reported near
Ardmore, Oklahoma, and at least three people were killed due to that
storm in the community of Lone Grove. Rescue workers were on the
southwest side of town using heavy construction equipment to free
people trapped in destroyed homes, and ambulances were staged nearby
in anticipation of treating patients with serious injuries.
Significant tornado damage was reported across the western and
northern part of Oklahoma City.

STORM ALERT 2009: Don't forget our annual severe weather awareness
tour, Storm Alert 2009, will come to Jasper tomorrow night. Our show
will begin at the CHS Building in downtown Jasper at 7:00, but the

...Severe Storms Possible Tomorrow...

ANOTHER SPRING-LIKE DAY: We are forecasting highs in the low 70s again
today; about 15 degrees above average for early February in Alabama.
After morning clouds, we expect intervals of sunshine during the
midday and afternoon hours along with a stiff southerly breeze. We
could see a few showers on radar today and tonight, but they should be
very isolated, and mainly across the Tennessee Valley region of
extreme North Alabama.

TO THE WEST: There is a moderate risk of severe weather today across
Northeast Texas, Southeast Oklahoma, Northwest Louisiana, and the
southwest part of Arkansas. Surrounding that, a large slight risk area
extends from Central Texas to Missouri. Severe storms should develop
in this region in response to a dynamic weather system coming out of
the Southwest U.S. This system will blow into Alabama during the day
tomorrow.

THE ALABAMA SEVERE WEATHER THREAT: At this point it looks like the
primary threat of severe weather tomorrow will be in the 12:00 to 6:00
p.m. time frame. It looks like your standard early season event that
features very good dynamics, but marginal thermodynamics. The primary
threat will come from damaging straight line winds, but based on the
projected wind profiles, a few isolated tornadoes will be possible as
well. Tomorrow will be a day when you want to be close to a good
source of weather information in the event severe weather watches and
warnings are needed.

REST OF THE WEEK AND THE WEEKEND: Dry air moves in quickly late
tomorrow night, and Thursday looks like a day with ample sunshine and
a high in the mid 60s. Then, clouds move in quickly Thursday night,
and a few periods of rain are likely on Friday as another impulse in
the fast flow across the southern U.S. moves across. That rain should
be gone by Friday night, and at this point it looks like the weekend
ahead will be dry with a high in the upper 50s Saturday, followed by
low 60s on Sunday.

STORM ALERT 2009: I will be doing a one-man version of Storm Alert
2009 tonight at Sylvan Springs United Methodist Church, on Alabama
Highway 269. This is a place hit hard by the EF5 tornado on April 8,
1998. Tonight's show will begin at 7:00; I promise to have you on your
way by 8:00. Then, our regular show this week will be Thursday night
at 7:00 in downtown Jasper at the CHS building. You can meet our
entire weather team, get some cool prizes to take home, and learn more
about Alabama weather. The point of this annual weather tour is
getting Alabamians ready for the spring tornado season season, which
is just around the corner.

...Severe Weather Possible Here Wednesday...

Just a little over one year ago, we dealt with a deadly severe weather
event across a large part of the southern U.S., including Alabama.
The Super Tuesday Outbreak was he thirteenth deadliest in U.S.
history. It was followed by a pretty decent ice storm a week or so
later. Now, we have experienced a terrible ice storm, and it may be
followed by another significant severe weather event. The severe
weather episode could affect some of the same areas that were
devastated by the terrible ice storm.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: We find a strong upper level disturbance
ejecting out of the big storm system over the Southwest this morning.
This disturbance will rotate north northeastward. A strong surface
low pressure system is forming in the lee of the Rocky Mountains. The
surface low will be in Montana by tomorrow morning. A line of strong
storms developed last night and continues moving east and northeast
this morning. It could produce isolated severe today from the Central
Plains into the Midwest, but limited moisture will be available to
fuel the storms. We will be dry today with a decent supply of
sunshine and highs again near 70F. The strong ridge of high pressure
to our southeast will block the approach of the front for the time
being. A few showers could reach Northwest Alabama late tonight, but
they will be isolated.

TUESDAY: The main upper level system will storm out of the
Southwest on Tuesday. This system will have more to work with in the
way of moisture. In addition, the wind fields will be substantial.
This will set the stage for severe weather from Texas to Illinois. If
moisture levels are high enough, there could be a significant threat
of tornadoes from Northeast Texas through eastern Oklahoma and western
Arkansas. Here in Alabama, it will be mild and windy with a few
showers over northwestern sections of the state.

WEDNESDAY AND BEYOND: By Wednesday morning, the intense surface
cyclone will be near Chicago. The powerful upper system will be
swinging into Arkansas. Winds at the jet stream level will be roaring
at over 115 mph from eastern Texas into Northwest Alabama. Dewpoints
should rise to near 60F, sufficient for severe weather. But when you
factor in those winds, the moderate instability might not be a big
limiting factor. Storms will arrive in western Alabama during the
day, and they are likely to become severe. It is a situation that
will need to be monitored carefully, as the details about the specific
threat are not clear yet. Stay tuned. Thursday should feature
clearing skies, with another system following on Friday with rain and
a few storms.

AUSTRALIAN WILDFIRES: Intense wildfires in southeastern Australia
have razed entire towns. The fires are the deadliest in the history of
the country have killed over 125 people. Victoria state was the
hardest hit. Over seven hundred homes have been destroyed.

ON THIS DATE IN 1994: One of the most devastating ice storms in U.S.
history affected Louisiana, Mississippi and Northwest Alabama. The
glazing began on the 9th and would last until midday on the 10th. As
much as three to six inches of ice accumulated on exposed objects. The
weight of the ice brought down power lines, trees and tree limbs.
Over 750,000 people in Mississippi and 100,000 in Louisiana were
without power on the 10th and 11th, some still without power a month
later. According to the National Weather Service, it was the worst
ice storm in Mississippi since a severe ice storm struck the state in
January 1951 and the worst in Louisiana since 1983.

...Storms at Midweek...

You probably couldn't draw up a more perfect February day in Alabama.
Skies are mostly blue, with just a few widely scattered cumulus clouds
trying to get their act together over Central sections. There is more
in the way of low and mid level clouds over the Tennessee Valley,
spreading in from the northwest. Clouds will grow in coverage a bit
during the afternoon, especially over the North. Temperatures are in
the well into the 60s with a nice southerly breeze at the lunch hour,
with many locations destined for the lower 70s by afternoon's end.
Quite nice.

REPEAT PERFORMANCE MONDAY: We have a split flow pattern in the upper
flow across North America. The upper flow is split into two branches,
with an active southern branch in place from California to Georgia.
This active split flow pattern has given us very changeable weather
lately. That is a hallmark of such scenarios. Plus, split patterns
tend to stay in place for awhile. What this means is that we will see
several disturbances being spit at us over the next ten days or so out
of the Southwest. But on Monday, you will see a repeat performance of
today with high pressure in place. Highs will once again warm into
the lower 70s with a decent southerly breeze under partly sunny
skies. We could see a shower late Monday night, but it doesn't look
likely at all.

DUAL STORM SYSTEMS: A disturbance is swinging out of Old Mexico this
afternoon. It will swing north and northeastward over the next 24
hours. We will find it over the Central Plains by tomorrow
afternoon. It will develop an intense surface low that will move into
Minnesota by Tuesday morning. This low will push a cold front our
way, but the strong high pressure ridge over the western Atlantic will
protect us from the front for one more day. Showers and maybe a
thunderstorm will affect northwestern sections of Alabama on Tuesday.
Significant severe weather could occur to the west of us on Tuesday.

By Tuesday night, another stronger disturbance will be swinging out of
New Mexico into the Texas Panhandle. Another strong surface low will
be swinging northeast and will be moving into Illinois by Wednesday
morning. This system will push a line of thunderstorms towards us
during the afternoon hours. Instabilities will be low, with dewpoints
in the upper 50s, but wind fields will be strong with the intense low
to the north of us. The more northerly track of the low could limit
our severe weather. Still, there is a risk of strong storms on
Wednesday in Alabama. While confidence in the forecast is low, it is
a situation to watch.

ON THIS DATE IN 1996: Snow flurries were reported in Florida as far
south as New Port Richey as extreme arctic cold finally reached
Florida after plaguing much of the eastern two-thirds of the country
from late January through early February.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: Even South Texas couldn't escape the grip of
the cold winter of 2002-03. Measurable snow fell in unlikely places
like Austin, TX (0.4 inch) and San Antonio (0.1 inch). A trace even
fell in College Station and Del Rio.
