ABC 33/40 E-FORECAST
Afternoon Edition For Saturday October 6, 2007
===================================================================
SECOND ANNUAL CALHOUN COUNTY FALL FEST
October 13 in Anniston

Hundreds of people turned out last year on a beautiful October day to
enjoy a day of celebration of agriculture, regional foods, home-made
goods, and local arts and crafts on McClellan's historic parade
grounds. This year promises to be bigger and better.

In the tradition of a county fair, contests will be held in a variety
of cooking and handcraft divisions, including the chicken-que, canned
goods and baked goods contests, and arts and crafts contests. Contact
the Calhoun County Extension Office at 256-237-1621 for complete
rules and submission guidelines or visit http://www.aces.edu/

Calhoun/ click on the Fall Fest logo and links for contest entry
forms are at the bottom of the page.

Other activities include a cake walk, hay rides, face painting for
children, pumpkin patch, antique tractor show and farm animals.
Local farmers will be selling their autumn produce, and area master
gardeners can help you can dress up your summer weary yard at their
plant sale. Local artists and crafts people will also be selling
their wares at Buckner Market.
Food and beverage vendors will also be on hand, so plan on spending
the whole day. Live music will be provided by the band "Cowboy Up",
led by former "Sawyer Brown" fiddle and guitarist Bobby Randall. Take
Alabama Hwy 21 north through Anniston, and turn right at the new
Lowe's. Follow the signs to historic Buckner.
===================================================================

...Welcome Race Fans!...

Tens of thousands of race fans are converging on the world's fastest
speedway for a weekend of racing excitement. The weather will be
generally cooperative for the races today and tomorrow. Let's check
it out.
ON THE WEATHER MAPS: At the surface, high pressure is centered near
Washington, D.C. Did you see the weather for the Red Sox/Angels game
at Fenway or the Indians/Yankees at the Jake in Cleveland? 80
degrees at nine o'clock at night in Boston? Unseasonably warm
weather in the Southeast. All thanks to this high pressure system,
which ridges all the way down into the Southeast.
THE REST OF YOUR WEEKEND:: A relatively moist easterly
flow continues around that ridge and it is spreading cloudiness into
Alabama from the east. Those stratus clouds are changing into
stratocumulus and eventually cumulus clouds as a still strong fall
sun works on them. A few showers and an isolated storm could form
this afternoon. Humidity levels will continue to be relatively high
through the weekend and temperatures will be warm. Tomorrow will be
a lot like today with a mixture of partly cloudy to cloudy skies and
a slight chance of a mainly afternoon shower or storm. Coverage will
be very small.
THE WEEK AHEAD: The next big player in national weather
will be the very deep upper trough over the Intermountain Region
between the Sierras and Rockies. This powerful system is bringing
snow to parts of the west today. It will swing out onto the Plains,
closing off into a bowling ball of an upper low that will roll toward
the Great Lakes states. It will push a weakening cold front towards
Alabama. It will deliver a shot of showers and storms Monday night
into Tuesday, but starved for moisture, the chances will be low.
Drier air will filter in behind the system, but temperatures will
only fall back to near or just above normal with highs around 80,
lows around 60.
TROPICS: Convection flared overnight in the disturbance east of the
Lesser Antilles. But this system is undergoing significant westerly
wind shear and development will be difficult until tomorrow night
when the shear will diminish. It is moving northwest and is no
threat to land. The disturbance over the northwestern Caribbean is
in an area that is favorable for development this time of year. It
is moving west or southwest. The disturbance north of Puerto Rico
shows signs of slow development. If it does develop, it will
eventually move out to sea harmlessly. Only the GFDL believe that it
has a future as a tropical cyclone.
ON THIS DATE IN 1999: Disastrous flooding continued in central and
southern Mexico as a tropical depression over the Gulf of Mexico
produced torrential rains. The weak storm, barely discernible on
weather maps, dumped very heavy rains, forcing 157,000 people from
their homes and killing at least 66 people.

...Unseasonably Warm...

My flight from Salt Lake City yesterday was packed with NASCAR fans
heading for Talladega A busy weekend of events here in Central
Alabama. The weather will generally be cooperative. Let's run down
the list.

FOR TODAY: The sixth annual BRAVO! Birmingham Arts Festival will
be held today from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Virginia Samford Theatre and
adjacent Caldwell Park. Antiques at the Gardens, Alabama's premiere
annual antiques show and sale is at the Botanical Gardens. The final
event of the Year of Alabama Arts is the Bluff Park Art Show, one of
the finest art shows in the nation. Up I-20, the Talladega
Superspeedway will host the Mountain Dew 250, the Craftsman Truck
Series race. Skies will start off mostly cloudy this morning with a
persistent layer of stratus at about 2,000 feet and some patchy fog.
Breaks will open in the cloud layer during the morning and
temperatures will warm into the middle and upper 80s. A persistent
easterly flow will continue to pump relatively moist air into the
area. A few widely scattered storms will form during the afternoon,
but most locations will remain dry.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: We can group all three games together. Vanderbilt
plays at Auburn at 11:30, Houston is at Alabama at 2:00 and UAB is at
Mississippi State for an afternoon game. At all three stadiums,
temperatures will peak between in the upper 80s, except possibly 90
at Starkville, during the games. There is little or no chance of rain
at any of the games.

SUNDAY: The UAB-Ford 500 will be Sunday at Talladega. Race fans
will think the race has been moved back to August, with partly cloudy
skies and highs again the middle to upper 80s. The chance of rain
will still be very small.

THE WEEK AHEAD: A very powerful trough of low pressure over the
Rockies that is bringing 3 to 5 inches of snow to Park City, Utah
today will swing out onto the Plains on Monday, closing off into an
upper level low. As it moves into the Great Lakes region it will
push a front toward Alabama. Moisture will be limited, and the
chance for showers and storms will be similarly limited. The chances
will be better than the next couple of days, but no drought busting
rains in sight. The drier air moves in for the later half of the
week, but temperatures will continue on the warm side.

TROPICS: The much ballyhooed low that has been wandering
nomadically across the Gulf moved inland over Southeastern Texas last
night, never amounting to anything in the tropical department. An
area of disturbed weather north of the Greater Antilles will have a
chance to develop over the next couple of days as it moves slowly
west or northwestward. The GFS develops a low and moves it toward
the Bahamas before it is picked up early in the week by the
approaching trough. It should then move harmlessly out to sea to the
northeast.

ON THIS DATE IN 1952: Nashville recorded its earliest snowfall, as a
trace fell on this date.

THE ALABAMA STORY: October is playing somewhat of a trick on us. It
is keeping the thermometer at levels more like September and even
late August. It is going to be that way through much of next week.
Mind you, this is not unbearable heat by any means as high
temperatures will be mostly in the mid to upper 80s. Don't look for
any drought-breaking rain for the coming week. Showers this evening
will be isolated with few, if any, for Saturday. There will be a few
showers Sunday afternoon. Probably our better chance will come about
Tuesday when the showers will be a bit more widespread. See our day-
by-day forecast.

LONG WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: In the upper 80s every day for a high.
There will be some scattered showers and thunderstorms, mostly in the
afternoon, over the weekend, but thinning out greatly Monday and
Tuesday.

FOR THE SPORTS FANS: For high school games this evening, most of
them have a 7:00 p.m. kick off. It should be around 80 at most
stadiums falling into the 70s. Only a slight risk of a shower during
the games. For college football Saturday, we can group all three
games together. Vanderbilt plays at Auburn at 11:30, Houston is at
Alabama at 2:00 and UAB is at Mississippi State for an afternoon
game. At all three stadiums, temperatures will peak between in the
upper 80s, except possibly 90 at Starkville, during the games. There
is little or no chance of rain at any of the games.

TROPICAL WEATHER: There was a non-tropical low-pressure area over
the NW Gulf. Showers and thunderstorms increased some. It should move
inland over SW Louisiana or SE Texas tonight. It could get a bit
stronger before landfall. Disturbed weather is widespread over the
Bahamas. The system is disorganized and winds upstairs do not favor
intensification, but there could be some slow development in the next
day or two as it all moves WSW. Showers and storms over the NW
Caribbean are kin to a weak low-pressure trough. It could develop
some in the next day or two as it drifts WNW. There are several other
disturbances a lot further out, including the remnants of Melissa.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: 102 in Death Valley was the hot spot yesterday.
It was 23 at Burns, Oregon this morning and 1 above zero at Anaktuvuk
Pass in Northern Alaska. The wind chill is close to zero this
afternoon in that general area. Rain is expected to change to snow
after midnight in the Salt Lake City area and 2 to 4 inches will
accumulate Saturday, mainly on the benches. The bench area in the
Salt Lake Valley is, as the name implies, an increase in elevation
then levelling off somewhat before the real sharp rise of the Wasatch
Mountains.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It is so much fun to watch Little Miss
Molly when she comes home from the beauty shop. When we turn off U.S.
11, she immediately recognizes our street. Her eyes brighten, her
tail is thumping the side of the door in the car and she looks
closely in every yard to see if any of her many friends are there to
greet her. When she gets out of the car, she wants to run around the
neighborhood. Then she comes in for a treat and settles in for a
long, long nap. I wish I was a little doggie. I could use some
rest. Life goes on......

...A Summer-Like Weekend Ahead...

A FEW SHOWERS POSSIBLE TODAY: Todays weather will be very similar to
what we experienced yesterday; warm and muggy conditions with some
sun at times, and the risk of a few scattered showers as a very moist
airmass remains in place. The chance of any one spot getting wet
today is about one in four, and the high should be up in the low to
mid 80s.

THE WEEKEND: The air will become drier tomorrow and Sunday, and
accordingly we believe most of the weekend will be dry across our
state. We will still hang on to a small risk of a shower tomorrow and
Sunday, but any showers should be few and far between. The sky will
be partly sunny both days with summer-like warmth; the temperature
will climb into the mid to upper 80s on both days, about 10 degrees
above normal for this time of the year.

FOR SPORTS FANS: For high school football across North and Central
Alabama tonight, the weather will be warm and humid and a slight
chance of a shower. Temperatures will be near 80 degrees at kickoff,
then falling into 70s through the rest of the game. Tomorrow,
Vanderbilt will be at Auburn (11:30 kickoff), Houston at Alabama
(2:00) and UAB will travel to Starkville to play Mississippi State
(1:30). High temperatures will be well into the 80s at all three
games. There is only a small chance of a shower, although a slightly
better chance in Starkville. This is race weekend at Talladega. For
the Mountain Dew 250 tomorrow, temperatures at the Superspeedway will
range between 84 and 87 with only a small risk of a shower. On Sunday
for the UAW-Ford 500, few if any showers expected with temperatures
at the track peaking at a summer-like 88 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: We will begin the week with more warm and humid weather on
Monday and Tuesday; we expect highs in the 80s, and only a few
isolated showers around here. To the south, a tropical system will be
moving through the southern Gulf of Mexico. Environmental conditions
would see to favor this becoming a tropical storm, maybe even a
hurricane at some point on the journey westward. At this point it
looks like the most likely track will take it across the northern tip
of the Yucatan peninsula, and on into the main Mexican coast well to
the south of Brownsville, Texas over the latter half of the week.
But, a few models hint at a weakness in the ridge north of the system
that might cause a more northward turn. We will keep an eye on this
closely in coming days.

ALABAMA TIDBITS: Birmingham received only a trace of rain yesterday;
the rain deficit for 2007 now stands at 18.59". Hottest spots in
Alabama yesterday were Dothan and Mobile, both with 90 degrees.
Dothan did manage .14" of rain from a brief passing shower. The rain
total for Anniston was only 0.05", and Tuscaloosa received only 0.04".

A MOSTLY DRY WEEKEND: Thanks to a broad circulation out of the SE,
warm humid air continues to cover Alabama like a wet blanket.
However, so far there has not been a real trigger to extract this
moisture into the form of a beneficial rain. It has been a situation
with mostly scattered light showers. It appears that tomorrow will be
our best chance of getting rain for any one community. Even then,
don't look for a drenching. By Saturday, we think most communities
will stay dry with only a small chance of a shower at any one
address. Same situation on Sunday and we have omitted any mention of
showers for Monday.
Only a few days ago, the average high temperature for Birmingham
dropped from 80 to 79. It wasn't too long ago that our normal high
was 91 in the middle of the summer. This means that our high
temperatures over the next several days will average 5 to 9 degrees
too warm for early October.

WEATHER FOR SPECTATOR SPORTS: For high school football across
Central Alabama Friday evening, warm and humid and a slight chance of
a shower with temperatures in the 70s through the entire game. On
Saturday, Vanderbilt will be at Auburn, Houston at Alabama and UAB
will travel to Starkville to play Mississippi State. High
temperatures will be well into the 80s at all three games. There is
only a small chance of a shower, although a slightly better chance in
Starkville. This is race weekend at Talladega. For the Saturday
Mountain Dew 250, temperatures at the track will range between 84 and
87 with only a small risk of a shower. On Sunday for the UAW-Ford
500, few if any showers expected with temperatures at the track
peaking around 88.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: Matt Marshall, one of our regular readers at
Layton, Utah, tells us that a good storm is expected to move through
North Utah between now and Saturday night. There is an 80% chance of
snow along the bench area, which is an elevated area just east of
Salt Lake Valley. He also tells us that autumn color is at its peak
or just past in the Wasatch Mountains. He can see a lot of red color
from his home on the west side of the Wasatch. He said those were
spectacular—about as vivid as he has ever seen. A good snow cover is
also expected from this storm in the mountains of Montana including
Yellowstone National Park. Four inches of new snow already at the
Paradise Ranger Station near Mt. Ranier. Coldest this morning was 20
at Burns, Oregon and 21 at Antero Reservoir, Colorado. Honolulu has
only had one-third their normal rain so far this year. Yesterday 1.81
inches of rain at Alma in South Georgia and 1.55 at Charleston.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I guess Little Miss Molly is growing up
even though she is considered grown at five, but she is still on a
learning curve. Yesterday Molly was asleep in our granddaughter's
lap. She placed Molly on the floor when she got up and Molly growled
at her. That is the first time we have ever heard Molly growl period.
The little girl is at the PBS today (Puppy Beauty Shop). Every time
that happens, I realize that I am far too attached to that little
creature, because I can't wait for her to get home. She is the spark
plug in our home and keeps us entertained. Life goes on......

...Scattered Showers Today...

A FEW SHOWERS: Moist air moved into Alabama yesterday thanks to a
broad low pressure area moving through the central part of the Gulf
of Mexico. With this tropical airmass in place, we will mention a
chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms across Alabama today.
The chance of any one spot getting wet is one in three, and where the
rain falls amounts should be mostly one-quarter inch or less. Not
exactly what we need to really make a serious dent in this drought.
The sky will be generally cloudy, and the high this afternoon will be
in the low 80s around here. The weather won't change all that much
tomorrow; more clouds than sun along with a chance of scattered
showers during the day. The air will be slightly drier over the
weekend, and at this point it looks like the weather will be
generally dry Saturday and Sunday with very warm afternoons and only
isolated showers.

RACE WEEKEND: For Saturday's Mountain Dew 250 at the Talladega
Superspeedway, there is only a small risk of a shower during the
race, and temperatures will be in the 84 to 87 degree range with
fairly high humidity values. It will feel more like a summer day.
Pretty much the same story for Sunday's UAW-Ford 500; a partly sunny
sky with race temperatures between 84 and 87, and only a slight risk
of a shower during the big event.

FOOTBALL WEEKEND: Summer-like weather is the story for Tuscaloosa on
Saturday, which is homecoming day on the campus of the University of
Alabama. Alabama will host Houston at Bryant-Denny Stadium shortly
after 2:00 p.m. The sky will be partly sunny, and the kickoff
temperature will be a toasty 86 degrees. Auburn will host Vanderbilt
at 11:30 a.m…. the temperature will be near 82 degrees at kickoff
with a mixture of sun and clouds during the game. Once again, the
chance of a shower will be small. UAB will be in Starkville to take
on Mississippi State (1:30 kickoff). Expect a kickoff temperature
near 85 degrees with just a slight risk of a shower during the game.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The low in the Gulf of Mexico should move into
Louisiana tonight with no significant development. Another tropical
wave, now in the vicinity of the Bahamas, will move across the
southern tip of Florida and into the Gulf of Mexico over the weekend.
Favorable conditions should in place over the southern Gulf for
strengthening during the first half of next week, so we will need to
watch this one closely. Too early to determine if the system will
continue moving westward toward Mexico, or it it will be pulled
northward toward the central Gulf coast.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: The rain total in Fort Smith, Arkansas
yesterday was a whopping 6.48", with some flooding problems as well.
The hottest place in the nation yesterday was Imperial, CA with 101,
while the cold spot in the "lower 48" was Leadore, Idaho with 23.
Cold spot in Alaska was Anaktuvuk Pass with 12 degrees above zero.

THE HUMIDITY IS BACK: Hope you enjoyed those autumn-like days,
because they are over for a while. Dew points are in the upper 60s
across Central Alabama as compared to the 40s just a few days ago. It
is all due to an influx of moisture from the SE circulating around a
low-pressure system in the Gulf of Mexico. We do not look for many
showers tonight, but there will be a better chance of showers and
maybe a few thunderstorms Thursday. Our best chance of rain will
probably be on Friday. The outlook for the weekend is a significant
reduction in showers or thunderstorms with few, if any, on Sunday.
High temperatures will be in the mid 80s and lows at night 70 to 72.
No more of those 40s and 50s for a while.

FOOTBALL AND RACE WEATHER: For Vanderbilt at Auburn and UAB at
Mississippi State, as well as Houston at Alabama, the peak
temperatures for all three afternoon games should be 86 to 88 with a
slight chance of a shower at each game. It is race weekend at
Talladega. Early indications are for only widely scattered showers
and maybe a thunderstorm on Saturday, which means you have a much
better chance of staying dry. Few, if any, showers are expected on
Sunday. It will be warm and humid with track temperatures in the mid
to upper 80s.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The situation in the Gulf of Mexico is still
rather puzzling. A low-pressure area was over the North/Central Gulf
moving westward. It will pass well south of the Louisiana coast and
it might even diminish or pretty much disappear over the NW Gulf.
However, the National Hurricane Center says there is still some
potential for it to evolve into a tropical or subtropical depression
during the next day or so. There wasn't much organization today, so
the NHC cancelled the scheduled recon flight for this afternoon.
Another broad area of low pressure was forming east of the NW
Bahamas. Winds upstairs are becoming more friendly for development.
It could become a tropical depression as it begins a slow west
movement on Thursday or Friday. A tropical wave was 1,300 miles east
of the Southern Windward Islands. Conditions are not friendly in that
area. The next named storm will be Noel.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: Big rain amounts in Missouri and Arkansas
yesterday with 6.48 inches at Ft. Smith, Ark., and 3.40 at Ozark.
Over an inch fell at Tulsa, bringing their 2007 total to almost 47
inches. Oklahoma City has received an amazing 51.47 inches of rain
this year—23 inches above average. A good snow cover is expected in
Yellowstone Park over the next couple of days, as well as in places
like Alta, Utah where temperatures may drop to between 15 and 20 by
Saturday morning.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly had a nightmare in the
middle of the night. I was sleeping only two feet away and about
every 10 seconds, I could hear a weak muffled bark. It was enough to
wake me up and I lay there amazed because it went on for five minutes
or more. I sure do wonder what little puppies dream about. I guess it
could be a Great Dane chasing her at 40 mph. Just like the good old
days this morning. She had me out for a walk at 5:45 before daybreak.
My neighbor, who is my rain dance assistant halfway up the walking
track, has a tree that is nearly ½ in full autumn color, but the
other half is green. Never understood how that works. Life goes on
and I hope Molly has another dog-mare tonight to entertain me......

...Moisture Levels are Increasing...

HIGHER HUMIDITY AND WARMER NIGHTS: A broad tropical low pressure area
moving across the central part of the Gulf of Mexico today, well to
the south of Mobile, will bring increasing moisture levels into
Alabama today along with scattered clouds and the risk of isolated
showers for the eastern counties of the state. The best chance of a
shower will be from roughly Roanoke southward to Dothan, and even in
that part of the state the showers will be widely separated. This
will be another warm day with a high in the mid 80s.

The system in the Gulf will have some chance to become a tropical
depression during the next 24 hours, but at this point it looks like
the greatest chance of landfall is somewhere between Galveston, Texas
and Morgan City, Louisiana. One way or another, we do expect
increasing dewpoints and humidity levels through Friday, meaning
warmer nights and muggy days that will feel more like summer. In
terms of rain chances, we will mention the chance of widely scattered
showers and thunderstorms tomorrow and Friday, mainly during the
afternoon hours, but widespread rain doesn't look especially likely.
Highs will hold in the 80s through Friday.

RACE WEEKEND: For now it looks like a pretty good part of the weekend
will be dry, but we will mention the chance of isolated, mainly
afternoon showers on both Saturday and Sunday with a moist airmass
staying place. The summer-like weather will continue, with afternoon
highs well up into the 80s, and nights will be muggy with a morning
low in the low 70s, nothing like the cool, crisp mornings we enjoyed
back at the beginning of the week. For the races at the Talledaga
Superspeedway this weekend, we can't rule out the chance of a brief
passing shower on Saturday or Sunday, but for now we don't expect
rain to be a big problem for NASCAR fans.

NEXT WEEK: Peering out into the October 8-12 time frame, we should
begin the week with more warm and humid weather. The primary mid-
latitude jet stream will remain well to the north, but the tropics
will be active. A number of the computer models develop another
tropical system in the southern Gulf of Mexico early next week, and
move it to the west during the first half of the week. Too early to
determine now if the system will keep moving west, into Mexico, or
make a turn northward toward the Central Gulf coast. Environmental
conditions would seem to favor good development of this one, so stay
tuned.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Be sure and mark November 10 on your calendar and
keep the date open; that is the date for the 2007 Storm Alert XTREME
at the BJCC in downtown Birmingham. Once again this year, we will be
working in association with the Alabama International Auto Show.
Storm Alert XTREME is our annual severe storm training class; Brian
Peters our of staff (who happens to be one of the best SKYWARN
trainers in the nation) will teach both the beginning and the
advanced class, and there is no cost at all. Even if you have been
trained before, you need to be there. The schedule is posted on the
alabamawx.com blog!

ANOTHER DRY DAY WEDNESDAY: It was another pleasantly cool night
across Alabama. Early morning lows were in the 50s most places, but
in the lower 60s from Montgomery southward. It will be several
degrees warmer tonight. However, across North and Central Alabama,
most lows will be in the upper 50s and lower 60s. Afternoons will
gradually get warmer with most highs in the mid to upper 80s.
Yesterday it was 89 in Pinson and Selma.

THE RAIN SITUATION: Still very dry across a big chunk of Alabama.
The latest report from the U. S. Drought Monitor puts 49% of Alabama
under the Exceptional drought classification—the worst there is. Most
of that is over the east and north. Extreme South Alabama is in
fairly good shape. The rain deficiency for Birmingham as of today is
18.26 inches. It is over 25 inches short at Anniston. Down in South
Alabama, Geneva is only about 6 inches below average. So, what are
our chances? We believe some widely scattered ones will show up
Thursday and possibly a better chance on Friday and Saturday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The Gulf of Mexico looking more interesting. There
is a nervous weather area with the surface low about 100 miles WSW of
Key West. It has the potential of possible semi-tropical or tropical
development over the next day or so as it moves across the Central
Gulf of Mexico. The latest model runs place the center south of the
Louisiana coast by Thursday morning. Meanwhile, an updated hurricane
season forecast from the team at Colorado State University, Ft.
Collins. For the rest of the season (October and November), is
expected to produce 4 named storms. That is one less than the earlier
forecast. Two of those 4 are expected to be hurricanes and 1 a major
hurricane. So far this season, we have had 13 names storms, 4
hurricanes and 2 major hurricanes.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: A 6.6 earthquake occurred this morning with the
center 75 miles SW of Sand Point, Alaska. The NWS/West Coast/Alaska
Tsunami Warning Center indicated that no tsuanmi was expected along
the Alaska, British Columbia, Washington or California coast. More
signs of the season. Good old Deadhorse and Barrow, near the north
coast of Alaska, lost 11 more minutes of sunlight today. They are
headed to that long cold dark winter. Their average temperatures for
tomorrow is the high of 27 and a low of 19. Coldest in the USA this
morning, 21 at Ely, Nevada and Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska. Over 3 inches
of rain in the last 24 hours at a number of locations in South
Florida, including 3.76 at Vero Beach and 3.85 at Palm Beach Gardens.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure did enjoy watching Little Miss
Molly as she slept last night. I was wide awake for at least an hour
and about every 15 minutes, as if on cue, she would uncurl herself
from her tightly wound knot, sit up and stretch her neck as far
upward as possible, moan and groan and then plop back down in a tight
knot sound asleep. She can curl up in a knot so tight that she looks
like a small black Frisbee. She continues to semi-suffer from an
overdose of attention and playtime, but she never turns down a chance
to play. It is her world series. Life goes on......

...Watching the Gulf This Week...

DAY AGAIN TODAY: The easiest part of the forecast is in the short
term; very dry air remains in place across Alabama today, meaning
ample sunshine and a high in the mid 80s, about five degrees above
normal for early October in Alabama (our average high today is 80,
and the average low is 57). Tomorrow will also be dry and warm with a
good supply of sunshine through scattered clouds.

TROPICAL ACTION IN THE GULF? A disturbance will move westward across
the Florida peninsula today, and will emerge into the eastern Gulf of
Mexico tonight. With warm water and a good upper air ventilation
pattern, this system has the potential to become a warm-core tropical
system during the next 36 hours. Most likely, it will remain south of
Mobile Bay (by about 200 miles or so), and move in the general
direction of the upper Texas or Louisiana coast. As it moves to the
west, it will pull moisture up into Alabama later in the week, and we
will bring in the chance of widely scattered, mainly afternoon
showers and thunderstorms on Thursday and Friday. Increasing humidity
levels will mean warmer nights, and rather uncomfortable days as
afternoon temperatures rise into the mid to upper 80s.

If a tropical storm does form in the Gulf of Mexico this week, it
will be called Noel.

WEEKEND PEEK: Warm and relatively moist air will continue to cover
Alabama, so for Saturday and Sunday we expect a mixture of clouds and
sunshine, with highs in the 80s and some chance of scattered showers
and thunderstorms both days. A strong system in the upper air is
forecast to send a significant cold front down this way at some
point, but it is very difficult to pin down the timing right now. It
could be that the best chance of organized showers and storms will
hold off until early next week, but that is not carved in stone right
now. Be watching for forecast changes as we get closer to the weekend.

TROPICAL TIDBITS: The circulation, that was formerly Tropical Storm
Melissa in the far eastern Atlantic, continue to show up on satellite
images, but has little in the way of thunderstorm activity around it.
This system should be no threat to land. And, the system that is
former Tropical Storm Karen is still hanging around north of the
Leeward Islands, but harsh upper air winds continue near the system
and additional organization is not likely in the short term.

RAIN UPDATE: Birmingham's rain total for the year is 23.52", and the
deficiency for 2007 is up to 18.26". Other rain deficits around
Alabama include 25.46" at Anniston and 23.46" at Tuscaloosa.
Alabama's wettest city so far this year is Brewton, near the Florida
state line, where the total is 43.83", and the deficiency is only 7.63".

HODGEPODGE: Miami was soaked with 2.14" of rain yesterday. Hottest
place in the nation was Death Valley, CA with 99 degrees. In Duluth,
Minnesota, the high yesterday was only 58 degrees.

CHANCE OF SHOWERS LATE IN THE WEEK: The month of October came on the
scene like it often does with crisp, clear, cool weather. By
daybreak, low temperatures were generally in the 40s and 50s. Here is
a representative sampling from around the state:

42 in Belle Mina
44 in Ashland and Muscadine
45 Odenville, Hamilton, Rock Mills
46 Moulton, Cullman Airport, Talladega, Meridianville
47 Hanceville, Scottsboro, Muscle Shoals
48 Pinson, SW Huntsville, Decatur, Concord/Hueytown, Valley Head
51 Anniston, Huntsville, Troy, Tuscaloosa, Livingston
55 Auburn, Birmingham, Guntersville, DeSoto State Park

Looks like two more days of mostly sunshine and, with clear cool
nights, afternoons will be gradually getting warmer with mid to upper
80s for the middle and latter part of this week. We see a slight
chance of a shower or thunderstorm later Thursday and widely
scattered showers and thunderstorms on Friday (a slightly better
chance).

TROPICAL WEATHER: Our main interest is a weak low-pressure area over
the NW Bahamas producing showers and thunderstorms in South Florida.
This low is expected to move westward across Florida and then across
most of the Gulf of Mexico. There is a chance that it will show some
tropical characteristics in the next couple of days. Melissa is
pretty much history, dissipating into a low-pressure area 665 miles
west of the Cape Verde Islands. The last public advisory has been
issued. The remnants of Karen extended from the North Leeward Islands
eastward for several hundred miles and not expected to regroup.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: Over 2 inches of rain over the last 24 hours at
Miami and over 1 inch at Seattle. 99 was the USA high Sunday at Casa
Grande, Arizona. Cold spots this morning 23 at Alamosa, Colorado and
14 at Arctic Village, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Something real strange going on at
Little Miss Molly's abode and the something strange is Molly herself.
We have described for years how Molly rings a tiny bell hanging from
the back doorknob when she needs to go potty. Recently, every time
our granddaughter sneezes, Molly races to the back door and knocks
the living daylights out of that bell. We don't understand. Maybe she
thinks the granddaughter needs to go, but it is funny. The little
girl always keeps ahead of us. Life goes on......

...Welcome To October...

GOOD MORNING: October is the driest month of the year in Central
Alabama. That is not good news considering that we have rainfall
deficits of 18-25 inches across much of the area. Persistent high
pressure has been our arch nemesis for much of 2007 and we need that
to change.

IS THERE ANY HOPE FOR RAIN? We look to the tropics with a hopeful
eye. An area of disturbed weather east of Florida across the Bahamas
shows signs of future development and a tropical or subtropical
depression could form as it moves westward toward the Gulf of Mexico.
The ridge of high pressure over the southern states will steer it
westward toward Texas or Louisiana. It will remain far enough to our
south to prevent any widespread or heavy rainfall, unfortunately. But
as it rounds the high pressure ridge, it will weaken it a bit and
allow for a surge of moisture from the south. This will bring back a
chance of showers and storms by Friday. Weakening the ridge will also
allow a front al system to approach from the northwest by Sunday. The
GFS had been bullish on rainfall from this system, but has of course
backed off now. We will see.

TROPICS: Wind shear has taken its toll on our weekend tropical
storms. Both Karen and Melissa bet untimely demises because of strong
westerly wind shear over the Atlantic. The remnants of Karen continue
on a northwestward course east of the Lesser Antilles. This will
eventually carry it into an area that is more favorable for
regeneration. It will be monitored. The remnants of Melissa will be
similarly watched. The system off the Southeast coast will be a topic
of conversation as it moves toward the Gulf.

STORMY IN THE SUNSHINE STATE: 2.63 inches of rain fell yesterday at
Miami along with 1.22 inches fell at Fort Lauderdale. Winds gusted to
gale force along the coast. Five to six foot breakers were reported
along with dangerous rip currents. High surf warnings are in effect
for today as breakers may reach ten feet at times. Beach erosion was
reported near Jacksonville along with high tides. The strong
northeasterly flow will continue through Wednesday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1893: The second major hurricane of the year struck
the Bayou Country of Louisiana with little warning. Heavy destruction
was reported along the coast from Timbalier Bay in Louisiana to
Pensacola. Landfall occurred between Port Eads and New Orleans.
Winds reached hurricane force around nightfall and continued to
increase until the eye crossed the shore about 11 p.m. By late
evening, storm surge was increasing water levels along the low-lying
coastal sections and tides would eventually reach fifteen feet along
the Louisiana coast and sixteen feet on the Chandaleur Islands. Waves
reached as high as the lantern at the Chandaleur Island Lighthouse. A
total of two thousand people died in the storm, including 779 from
Cheniere Caminanda and another 250 at Grand Lake.

Contact
the Calhoun County Extension Office at 256-237-1621 for complete rules
and submission guidelines or visit http://www.aces.edu/Calhoun/

click
on the Fall Fest logo and links for contest entry forms are at the
bottom of the page.

Other activities include a cake walk, hay rides, face painting for
children, pumpkin patch, antique tractor show and farm animals. Local
farmers will be selling their autumn produce, and area master
gardeners can help you can dress up your summer weary yard at their
Take
Alabama Hwy 21 north through Anniston, and turn right at the new
Lowe's. Follow the signs to historic Buckner.

...A Beautiful Sunday...

Another gorgeous fall day is in progress across Alabama with lots of
warm sunshine, relatively low humidities and a nice easterly breeze.
Winds are lighter than yesterday, helping to ease the fire threat just
a bit. Red flag warnings are in effect again today, meaning there is
a critical wildfire danger.

THIS JUST IN: Overnight runs of the GFS have become bullish on the
idea of a tropical low at midweek moving from east of Florida into the
Central Gulf of Mexico. The system moves westward, then possibly
northward ahead of a trough late in the week. This would be a welcome
change to our monotonous October-like forecast. Normally, we would
appreciate the fine, dry October weather, but we need the rain. So,
we will call for a chance of widespread rain across South Alabama on
Thursday with a chance of rain over the rest of the state Friday. An
ancillary benefit of the tropical low would be a weakening of the
ridge over the Southeast, which could open the door for a solid cold
front by Sunday. And this front would have lots of moisture to work
with, meaning a good chance of showers and storms late in the weekend.
Anything to knockout these persistent high pressure ridges that have
been plaguing us all summer (all for the past couple of years it
seems.)

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Karen met an untimely demise on Saturday as
very strong southwesterly winds sheared the thunderstorms from around
the center. The remnant low will continue northwestward and could
regenerate as it encounters more favorable upper level wind
conditions, but that is looking more and more unlikely. Melissa has
been downgraded to a tropical depression as it continues to battle
strong westerly wind shear. The depression will continue to weaken,
likely dissipating over the next couple of days. Something could
develop out of the disturbed weather east of the Bahamas and Florida.
One of the global models is predicting a strong hurricane moving up
the East Coast. The GFS has even bought into this idea with a weaker
system. Another idea is the tropical low that moves into the Gulf,
affecting our weather later in the week ahead.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: The 2002 North Atlantic Hurricane Season
started off slow, prompting researchers like Dr. Bill Gray to
downgrade his forecasts for the season. September is usually the most
active month, but no one expected what happened in September 2002. As
September rolled around, the counts suddenly exploded. A record eight
named tropical cyclones formed in the Atlantic basis during the month.
This is far greater than the average 3 to 4 that usually occur and
nearly equal to the long term average for an entire season. It is
one better than the previous record of 7 observed in September 1998.
The reasons for the burst of activity are hard to pinpoint, but one
reason is that systems formed in multiple reasons. Another reason is
that 2002 was the first year that the National Hurricane Center
started naming subtropical storms.
