...Picture Perfect Day...

Mr. Russell Cunningham, the President, or Dr. Carol Garrison, the
Chairman of the Board of the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce
could not have ordered more perfect weather than we enjoyed in the
Magic City yesterday. The official high at the Birmingham
International Airport was 78F. That is my precise definition of
perfect for here. It is two degrees above normal for the date. Throw
in a comfortable morning low of 48F and you can't beat it. Get ready
for more of the same the next two days.

NOW THROUGH MIDWEEK: Today will be another day of nearly crystal
clear blue skies, warm temperatures and a nice southerly breeze. Look
for high to pull up just short of 80 degrees at most locations, with a
few spots making the mark. Xerox last night and you have tonight.
Ditto for tomorrow. High pressure is centered near the South Carolina
coast this morning. This high will give us the prominent southerly
flow today, and again for the next couple of days. The stubborn high
pressure will protect us from an encroaching disturbance by deflecting
it to the north in the Monday/Tuesday time frame. A front will try to
approach Alabama from the north on Monday, and then go back north on
Tuesday as a warm front. Can't rule out a shower late Monday into
Tuesday morning over the Tennessee Valley, but Central Alabama stays
high and dry. By Wednesday, another low pressure system will be over
the Central Plains. It will be our next weather maker, and it could
bring us a decent chance of rain.

RAIN IN OUR FUTURE: As it heads northeast, it will push showers and
storms into Alabama during the day on Thursday. Timing is still up in
the air, but it looks safe to say that during the day is the best bet.
The system looks like it will be weakening as it approaches Alabama,
and severe weather is not expected to be a big problem. It is spring
however, so there is a chance. Rainfall amounts should average about
one half inch. Not a drought buster, for sure. But, system number
one will be followed by a second on coming in from the northwest early
on Saturday. Showers may breakout by daybreak on Saturday, with a
good chance of rain and storms during the day on Saturday. I am
reluctant to get excited this far out, but some locations could see
well over an inch of rain on Saturday if you put any stock in the GFS
model.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: A mid-afternoon F2 tornado struck the small
northeast Alabama town of Rainsville without warning, injuring twelve
people. Over thirty homes were damaged by the twister and fifty
buildings in the small town received damage, including the city and
police and fire stations. No tornado warning was in effect at the
time of the storm since the NWS Doppler radar from Birmingham did not
show significant signs of storm rotation because of the distance.
Ironically, another Doppler radar was being prepared for installation
at Hytop, very near the location of the tornado.

....Perfect Weather Warning...

There are very few opportunities for me to trot out the Perfect
Weather Warning. Today is one such day. With abundant sunshine, a
nice southeasterly breeze, and highs in the upper 70s, this is my
definition of perfect weather in Alabama. So, I will issue a perfect
weather warning for this afternoon. We feel confident enough to go
ahead and issue the same warning for tomorrow. In fact, the Day 3-5
Perfection Outlook indicates a Moderate Risk of perfect weather
through Tuesday. This may be upgraded to a High Risk in later
outlooks.

MAIN EVENTYOUR FORECAST: A strong ridge of high pressure will remain
in control of Alabama's weather through Tuesday. The disturbance
causing the weather over the Plains states today will move across the
top of the ridge on Monday, eroding it and allowing a front to push
down into Tennessee. That is as far as it will make it initially.
Another disturbance will move out of the Southwest on Wednesday,
bringing showers and thunderstorms along with it. The timing on the
precipitation with this system is still up in the air. Some model
runs bring it in Wednesday night, while the next run might wait until
Thursday evening. For now, the average is during the day on Thursday.
It does not look like a potent severe weather maker, which is good
news. It does look like it might produce an inch of rain in many
locations, which would be nice. Not a drought buster in and of
itself, but we will take what we can get at this time. We are in
between systems on Friday, but another system brings us another good
chance of rain and storms on Saturday. Two successive systems with
the potential to produce an inch of rain apiece. We will keep our
fingers crossed.

CHICAGOLAND'S WORST TORNADO DISASTER: Today is the 40th anniversary
of the worst tornado disaster ever in the Chicago, Illinois area.
Forty four tornadoes struck the area from Missouri and Iowa through
Illinois and Michigan, including at least six F3 twisters. A total of
58 people perished.

About 3:50 p.m., an F4 tornado roared into the town of Belvidere,
Illinois. Students at the elementary school had already been
transported home on buses, but high school students were loading as
the horrible twister roared across the building. Twelve of the buses
were overturned by the winds. Students were blown through an adjacent
field and makeshift stretchers were formed from plywood from nearby
houses and doors from the school. Thirteen students were killed and
300 injured, making it the sixth deadliest school tornado disaster in
U.S. history.

The worst tornado of the day occurred at Oak Lawn, Illinois about 5:30
p.m. where 33 people were killed. Many were killed in their cars as
the tornado struck at rush hour on the south side of Chicago,
including twelve at one intersection. Several children were killed at
a skating rink and other people died under the collapsing walls of a
supermarket.

...A Very Nice Weekend...

I think that when I find that place that has lows in the upper 40s and
highs in the 70s, I will have to consider that as a future home.
Someone today told me that it is Quito, Ecuador. I was hoping for
somewhere in the United States. So I guess that I will just enjoy our
varied weather right here in good ol' Alabama.

STORM CHASERS MASSING: Storm chasers have been salivating over
today's weather for nearly a week. Their target area today will be
the Central and Southern Plains, especially from the Texas Panhandle
into western Kansas, where the Storm Prediction Center has a Moderate
Risk Outlook for severe weather today. A very strong upper level
trough is moving into the Plains states. The airmass across the
Plains is somewhat unstable this morning. Wind shear profiles are
conducive for severe thunderstorms to form and there will be a short
window where tornadoes will be a good possibility this afternoon,
particularly in the Texas Panhandle around Lubbock. The system will
quickly morph into a massive thunderstorm complex with damaging winds
and large hail.

FOR YOUR WEEKEND: It actually will be quite perfect this weekend
across Alabama. Morning lows will be comfortable, in the upper 40s to
near 50. Daytime highs will warm into the upper 70s to near 80
degrees. Skies will be mostly sunny both days. Get out and enjoy it.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Cool high pressure over the Ohio Valley and South
Atlantic states will move out into the western Atlantic over the next
couple of days. This high will serve to deflect weather systems to
the north of us through the early part of the week. Then it will
break down as a stronger system moves our way. This system will bring
a good chance of showers and storms to Alabama by Wednesday night or
Thursday. The best chance looks like it will be Thursday. Rainfall
amounts may average around an inch with this system, but other recent
systems have showed promise several days out, too. As J.B. saith, a
drought begets a drought. The models hint at more widespread rain
next weekend. Keep your fingers crossed.

ON THIS DATE IN 1952: One reason that officials of the U.S. Weather
Bureau used the fear of public panic as one of their main reasons for
not issuing tornado forecasts for years. When
tornado forecasts began being issued in 1952, the predicted widespread
panic did not happen.

There were isolated reports of people reacting out of fear of the
official warnings, but the incidents were rare. One did happen on
this date, however, as a woman working in a store in Altus, Oklahoma
jumped in her car upon hearing a tornado warning. Her car slid off
into a ditch during a bad rainstorm and she was killed.

NO HOPE FOR RAIN UNTIL LATER NEXT WEEK: The weather across Alabama
this weekend is going to be very nice. Do not like to use that word
nice when we are crying for rain. On the front page of The Birmingham
News this morning, staff writer Jeff Hansen has a thorough story
about the Alabama drought and it is now listed as extreme from the
general area around Birmingham into NE Alabama. The National Weather
Service has five categories of drought. The worst is called exceptional.

We might as well await our turn. Morning model runs keep us dry all
the way through the weekend. There are increasing indications we will
have a good chance of showers and thunderstorms by next Thursday. We
may get some good rain amounts, but we cannot assume that until the
event gets a little closer.

Meanwhile, we can enjoy some pleasantly cool nights and some sunny
mild days with the relative humidity remaining lower than usual for
April. Our high temperatures will be close to 80 into the middle of
next week. There was some scattered light frost again this morning at
Black Creek in NE Etowah County with a low of 35. Light frost has
occurred on four of the last five mornings and nine of the last 13
mornings. It was 36 in Cullman and Ft. Payne and 38 in Crossville.

APRIL CAN BE FEROCIOUS: April has had a long history of producing
some vicious tornadoes in Alabama. Today happens to be an anniversary
of one of those events. It was on April 20, 1920 that powerful
tornadoes struck in Mississippi and Alabama. A most unusual event
occurred during the tornadoes. A young farmer near Hackleburg, in
Marion County, was fatally wounded by his own shotgun when the
tornado blew it off the wall and it discharged. In the Monthly
Weather Review, an extensive summary of the storms by meteorologist
P. H. Smyth from the Weather Bureau in Montgomery, indicated that
about 89 persons were killed and about 500 injured in the morning
tornadoes. Most of the deaths were in Marion and Franklin Counties.
At last two strong tornadoes moved NE in nearly parallel tracks about
40 miles apart. The total path length was estimated at 180 miles and
parts of 10 counties were affected. It was the worst outbreak in the
state in history up until that time. The woodlands looked like a
lawnmower had moved through.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: During those 1920 tornadoes, it got so dark
in downtown Meridian that people could hardly recognize each other in
the middle of the day. Tuscaloosa got over 3 inches of rain during
that event. How about Saranac Lake, New York? They have had a
terrific winter and tons of snow. Their high is expected to be an
amazing 70 by Sunday.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sometimes man adds to the beauty of
nature. Walking my little girl this morning, we counted 11 jet
contrails. A number of them crossed and formed what appeared to be a
huge asterisk in the sky. Little Miss Molly has been upset all
morning, because kids are playing in the cul-de-sac out front and she
cannot go out and play with them. She saw two big dogs this morning
that we were not familiar with, but they ran away before Molly could
play with them. Miss Molly will always be a little puppy and I am
glad. Life goes on......

...A Very Nice Weekend Ahead...

While we do desperately need some rain around here; we are about to
enjoy a delightful spring weekend with sunny mild days and clear cool
nights. Afternoon highs this weekend will be in the 75 to 80 degree
range, with early morning lows in the upper 40s and low 50s. Dry air
means no chance of rain, and just a few scattered clouds from time to
time.

NEXT WEEK: At this point we are still looking at dry weather during
the first half of the week, although a few showers might show up near
the Tennessee state line Tuesday afternoon. We will finally have that
long awaited chance at some beneficial rain by Thursday or Thursday
night of next week (April 26) as a strong upper trough advances into
Alabama from the west. The latest medium range computer model data
suggests the system will take its time moving through, and the rain
will linger into Friday (April 27), and possibly part of the day
Saturday (April 28). For now it looks like the rain will be gone
Saturday night, with Sunday (April 29) setting up to be a dry and
pleasant day. But of course, this event is 6 to 8 days away and the
timing might change as we get closer.

AT THE BEACH: The weather along the Alabama and Northwest Florida Gulf
coast will be beautiful this weekend, and through the first three days
of next week. Look for sunny days with highs in the mid 70s along the
immediate coast (temperatures will peak closer to 80 degrees just a
few miles inland). The sea water temperature in the Gulf of Mexico at
the Dauphin Island Sea Lab late yesterday afternoon was 70 degrees.
Panama City Beach reported a water temperature of 68 degrees at the
same time.

TROPICAL SEASON PREVIEW: Hurricane season in the Atlantic basin,
including the Gulf of Mexico, runs from the first day of June through
the last day of November. Dr. William Gray and his team at Colorado
State University expect an active season... here are some quotes from
their outlook issued earlier this month: "We have increased our
forecast for the 2007 hurricane season, largely due to the rapid
dissipation of El Niño conditions. We are now calling for a very
active hurricane season. Landfall probabilities for the 2007
hurricane season are well above their long-period averages. We
estimate that 2007 will have about 9 hurricanes (average is 5.9), 17
named storms (average is 9.6), 85 named storm days (average is 49.1),
40 hurricane days (average is 24.5), 5 intense (Category 3-4-5)
hurricanes (average is 2.3) and 11 intense hurricane days (average is
5.0). The probability of U.S. major hurricane landfall is estimated
to be about 140 percent of the long-period average."

DROUGHT UPDATE: Birmingham's rain total so far in 2007 is only 7.22";
we would normally be at
17.78" by now, so the rain deficiency for the year is up to 11.56".
That figure will rise to over one foot by early next week as the long
dry spell continues. Much of North-Central Alabama is considered to be
in a "severe drought".

================================================

NO CHANCE OF RAIN UNTIL NEXT WEEK: Normally our current forecast
would be most welcome this time of year. Not so under our present
circumstances. Those circumstances are excessively dry weather. In
the last 14 days, only 0.07 of an inch of rain has fallen at
Birmingham Airport. Even if all of that had fallen at one time, it
would hardly have settled the dust. Normally in April, we average
0.15 per day. April is normally our fourth wettest month of the year.
Last year we received almost 8 inches of rain during April and in
April 2005 over 5 inches. Down in Bibb County, the Cahaba River was
only 1.3 feet deep this morning. Bank full stage is 23 feet. We see
little or no chance of rain until about the middle of next week,
possibly as early as Tuesday.

So, it is mostly sunshine all the way through the weekend with cool
nights and mild days. By Sunday and Monday, our high temperature
should top out near 80. Lows will be in the mid 40s for the next 3
nights. Low temperatures this morning were as cool as 37 in Ft.
Payne, 39 in Crossville and 40 in Anniston and Concord/Hueytown.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES: At this time last year, Central
Alabama was in a stormy period. Birmingham got a whopping 5.51 inches
of rain in only 3 days. A year ago today, the temperature topped out
at a hot 91, then big thunderstorms erupted. A lot of severe
thunderstorm warnings were issued. Oneonta got a tremendous hailstorm
with some of the hail the size of softballs. In places, the hail
drifted enough to where front doors could not be opened and the hail
had to be scooped away. Thanks to Karen Tipton for reminding us about
the big hail event.

AT THE BEACH: Mostly sunshine at least through next Monday. High
temperatures consistently between 75 and 78 along the immediate beach
area and a few degrees warmer a few miles inland.

THE ALWAYS INTERESTING WORLD OF WEATHER: In search of cold
temperatures, we found 18 in Leadville, 14 at Gould and 9 at the Vail
Ski Patrol Station all in Colorado. There was 73 inches of snow on
the ground at Vail and 27 inches at Gould, which is located at an
elevation of 9,200 feet. Alta, in North Utah, got 14 inches of new
snow yesterday for a total of 48 inches on the ground and Morgan,
Utah got 7 inches. Coldest in Alaska this morning was 2 below at
Shishmaref.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I have been letting Little Miss Molly
sleep until she wakes up. Often that is 7:00 o'clock or later. When
she was younger, she used to snatch me out of bed never later than
5:00 a.m. and be ready to go on a long walk immediately. I sort of
miss those days. Lately I have been out for short walks at the crack
dawn. I love just to stand outside and listen to the sounds of
nature. This morning not more than 30 yards from the house, a bird
was talking constantly. He sounded semi-upset as if he were trying to
get his wife out of bed to cook breakfast. Or, it may have been the
lady bird trying to get her hubby to go look for worms. Took Molly
for her morning walk a little later and it sounded like the usual CR
(Community Riot) unfolding as we walked along. We highly agitated at
least 7 dogs. They were all restrained by electrical collars. Molly
has learned that they are restrained and she totally ignores them.
One day one of the dogs broke through the barrier and Molly headed
home. Life goes on.....

...A Long Dry Spell Ahead...

A very dry weather pattern continues for Alabama for the next five
days. Not necessarily good news for a state that is parched from the
lack of rain since the first of the year, but great news if you have
anything planned outdoors. Our forecast will consist of mostly sunny
mild days and clear cool nights through early next week; daytime highs
will generally be in the 70s with lows in the 40s through Sunday. The
dry weather will continue into the first part of next week.

OUR NEXT RAIN: At this point it looks like the next good chance of
significant and potentially beneficial rain for Alabama will come at
some point during the middle or end of next week. The latest medium
range computer models are targeting Thursday of next week (April 26)
as the day that rain returns to the state. Then, another dynamic
weather system moves through the following weekend with another chance
of rain and thunderstorms. Right now it looks like the best chance of
that rain will fall on Sunday (April 29), but there isn't too much
skill in a specific forecast beyond seven days, and the timing will
probably change as we get closer to the event. But, the bottom line is
that it looks like we will have at least two major systems before the
end of the month that could bring some needed rain to Alabama.

HOW DRY? 39% is our share of normal rainfall at Birmingham Airport so
far this year. 7.22 inches is all we have received.11.26 inches is our
shortfall. This is a major deficiency. The way rain falls determines
greatly how beneficial it is. When we are very dry, like we are now, a
2-inch rain falling in one hour is not nearly as beneficial as 1 inch
falling slowly over a period of 6 or 8 hours. The heavy quick rain
doesn't have time to soak in and is mostly run off. However, a quick
2-inch rain is more beneficial to streams and reservoirs, because it
runs off quickly toward those places.

YESTERDAY: Most of North Alabama did not receive enough rain to
measure yesterday; in fact most communities did not get a single drop.
There were some decent rain totals closer to the Gulf Coast; the ABC
33/40 SKYCAM at the Phoenix All-Suites in Gulf Shores (just east of
the Public Beach) reported 0.41" of rain from morning showers. The
total at Mobile was 0.36". Farther north, Greenville (Butler County)
and Troy (Pike County) both measured only 0.02".

SO FAR IN 2007: Based on data from the Birmingham Airport, the coldest
temperature in 2007 so far was 18 degrees, which was recorded on
January 29. The warmest temperature so far is 87 degrees, which was
the high on March 25. The wettest day was January 21 when we were
soaked with 1.15".

ROAMING: Hottest spots in the nation yesterday were McAllen, Texas and
Goodyear, Arizona with 95 degrees. Heavy thunderstorms in Puerto Rico
dumped 1.92" on San Juan.

A LAZY WEATHER PATTERN: Do not know the best word to describe
current and near term Alabama weather. Nonchalant comes to mind.
Also, we could call it inactive, uninteresting—you name it. I guess
all of that is good. It is especially good, since this means no
threat of severe weather all the way through next weekend. April is
usually a very active month for severe weather. It is interesting to
note that the NWS/SPC (Storm Prediction Center) has no outlook for
severe weather on all three of their days counting today.
Unfortunately, we also have zero chance of rain for our Central
Alabama forecast all the way through next Sunday at least.

I do not like to discuss models too much, because I like to keep
this story simple, but one of our most used and dependable models is
called the GFS. The latest run indicates dry weather into next week.
Too bad, because our rainfall deficit is now well over 11 inches. We
expect lots of sunshine across Alabama from tomorrow through the
weekend. Afternoons will be perfection on the old thermometer. Nights
will be a bit cool. We expect mid 40s for at least the next four nights.

AT THE BEACH: We understand some schools are in Spring Break now.
It is a good week for that. Dry weather is expected through Sunday
with lots of sunshine and high temperatures consistently in the upper
70s.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Two days ago the wind was gusting as high as
156 mph atop Mt. Washington, New Hampshire as that gigantic low
pressure area was centered over the northeast. Much quieter today. At
mid morning, gusts were 67 mph with a temperature of 25. The weather
observers up on that famous mountain would call that comfortable.
Cold temperatures this morning included 21 at Lake Tahoe, Hibbings,
Minnesota and 3 above at Barter Island, Deadhorse and Ugnu Kuparuk,
Alaska.(How would you like to explain to someone over the phone that
you lived in Ugnu Kuparuk?) It was 85 below zero at Vostok,
Antarctica. Boston has received over twice as much rain since January
1 as Birmingham. The Big Apple, sometimes called New York City, has
received 22 inches of rain, which is three times the Birmingham amount.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I cannot say thanks enough for all the
happy birthday greetings yesterday. They numbered over 80, by e-mail,
blog notes and IM messages. I am now going into a birthday ration
program where I will only celebrate each five years. I wish you could
have heard Little Miss Molly this morning when that cute little
Yorkie puppy came strolling down the walking track and across the cul-
de-sac in front of her house. I cannot walk Molly any more unless she
stops overlooking the backyard where the little Yorkie lives. She
whines and cries hoping he will come out and rub noses. My favorite
tree along the walking track, besides the Old Crow Motel, is the
sassafras tree. It is thirsty. The grass is thirsty. The thick
hedgerow separating our community from the more upscale community, no
longer looks like Amazon undergrowth. There is a crunching sound when
we walk across the open area. Little Miss Molly could not care less.
This morning, there was a large brown bird that I do not remember
seeing before. He sure was happy. He was singing either the Tennessee
Waltz or Sweet Home, Alabama. never a dull moment when Molly and I
walk. Life goes on.....

...Not Much Rain Today...

A few passing rain showers are possible across Alabama this morning,
but the rain won't make a dent in the big rain deficit for the year.
We need well over eleven inches to get back to where we should be
since January 1 (the total for the year is only 7.22"), but today most
communities will see one-tenth of an inch of rain or less. Weakening
upper air dynamics and the lack of quality low level moisture are the
main reasons for the lack of significant rain today. Most of the
showers will be out of Alabama by the much hour, and the sky should
begin to clear this afternoon as drier air moves in from the north.

A STRING OF SUNNY DAYS: We are expecting beautiful spring weather
tomorrow all the way through the coming weekend, with mostly sunny
mild days and clear cool nights. While early morning temperatures will
be down in the 40s, afternoon highs will be very close to 80 degrees
on Saturday and Sunday.

CHANGES NEXT WEEK: The weather will be much more interesting next
week; at this time it looks like the next major opportunity for
significant rain will come on Wednesday April 25, followed by an even
stronger weather system the following weekend (April 28-29). Of
course, this far out we can't be too specific, but hopefully we will
pick up some good rain before April ends. Not necessarily the best
news for NASCAR fans headed to Talladega, but we sure need the rain.
Lets hope the rain won't interfere with the actual races.

DID YOU KNOW? Birmingham has experienced a freeze as late as April 23;
that happened in 1986 when the low at the Birmingham Airport was 30
degrees. Snow flakes have been seen here as late as April 25; flurries
fell on that date in 1910. Looking into May, the coldest temperature
on record for the month was 36 degrees recorded on May 4, 1971. Of
course, the weather around here can get very hot in May; the hottest
temperature on record for May is 99 degrees measured on May 28, 1962,
and on May 29, 1898 (I wonder if both of those records were blamed on
"global warming"!).

HODGEPODGE: Mobile's official low yesterday morning was 37 degrees;
that beat the old record low of 38 degrees for April 17, set in 1962.
The temperature warmed 41 degrees in Mobile during the day; their high
yesterday was 78. That is a sign the air is very dry; it heats and
cools more efficiently when dewpoints are very low. The hottest spot
in the nation yesterday was Imperial, California with 90 degrees (a
place where dry air is almost a permanent fixture). A small tornado
touched down yesterday afternoon in the community of Haslet, Texas,
which is near Fort Worth.

There was damage to a carport and outdoor furniture, and trained
spotters observed the tornado as it touched down. Thunderstorm winds
gusted to 78 mph in Itasca, Texas, which is south of Dallas. One of
the warmest spots in Alabama yesterday was Pinson with 81 degrees.

================================================

SHOWERS MAY ARRIVE AFTER MIDNIGHT: Alabama weather is going to be
rather benign for the next 5 to 7 days with not much action. By
action, we mean a threat of severe weather and we do not really see
any of that all the way through the weekend into early next week.

A minor disturbance approaching from the west should bring us some
showers late tonight, probably after midnight. There will be
occasional showers Wednesday, but decreasing late in the day and
probably over by nightfall. This is not going to be a big dry
weather- erasing event. We estimate amounts around ¼ inch. The old
backyard thermometer is not going to offer us any excitement for days
on end. Indeed, we will barely get up to 80 by early next week. Our
highs over the weekend should be in the upper 70s. Lows for the next
several nights should be in the 40s. It is likely that Friday morning
will be our coolest with about 42 degrees across Central Alabama.

A TALE OF TWO CITIES: At one time, the NWS in New York described
the flooding in that area yesterday as being of historic proportions.
Bottom line: the Big Apple now has a surplus of over 8 inches of rain
so far this year. They had received almost 11 inches in the first 16
days of April. This is twice as much rain as they had received at
this same time last year. By contrast, the Big B (Birmingham) as of
today has a deficiency of 11.11 inches. That is a tremendous deficit
when you consider that 2007 is only 14 weeks old. We have to root for
some rain, because we are rapidly getting into the crucial part of
the growing season.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: 85 in Red Bluff, California was the hottest
yesterday. Cold spots this morning: Yellowstone National Park with 24
and Nuiqsut, Alaska with 8 below. The weather has calmed somewhat in
the NE. Yesterday, Mt. Washington, New Hampshire had wind gusts to
156 mph. Today the gusts are running about 76 mph and temperatures
were in the 20s. In Baghdad, it should be dry for the next week with
high temperatures between 77 and 88. I promised a lady I would update
that occasionally during the hot season. I am glad to do that.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I deeply appreciate all the happy
birthday wishes. It is hard to realize that I am 71 years older than
my pal, Little Miss Molly. I guess when you reach age 75 you have a
special privilege of dispensing advice. My recommendation is to live
every day as if it could be your last one. Also, lighten up! Every
time I get out on the interstate, I cannot believe the number of
drivers that darken up. Tailgating is rampant. Try to live each day
by being good to someone. Do not get upset easily and do not tense up
so much. I learned early on in the Weather Service that if you let
tension get to you, you would go crazy. That is why I am thankful for
the ability today to not get uptight even in the midst of a tornado
warning. I must admit that Little Miss Molly would not let me get
uptight even if I tried. I was outside walking this morning while she
was still sawing logs. It was just after daybreak and one of the CR
(Community Rabbits) was racing down the walking track at what seemed
like 40 miles an hour as if he were jogging. If Molly had seen that,
I would have had to give her a Valium snack. She knew from birth to
chase rabbits and cats. Life goes on and I am forecasting 25 more
years on this old globe and I am betting on Little Miss Molly being
with me 15 more years. By then, she would have reversed my aging
another 20 years. I feel exactly like I am 50 years old today. I am
lucky and thankful....

...Warming Trend Continues...

Alabama's warming trend continues today; we are expecting a high
somewhere between 75 and 80 degrees for most communities. The day will
feature a good supply of sunshine, although a few high clouds will
probably show up this afternoon. Clouds will thicken tonight in
advance of an upper air trough approaching from the west, and a few
showers could show up after midnight.
We will maintain the risk of a few passing showers through the morning
hours tomorrow, but with weakening dynamics and limited, we don't
expect much in the way of beneficial rain. Generally speaking,
rainfall amounts should be a quarter of an inch or less, and no severe
weather is expected. The primary window for showers will come from
about 2:00 a.m. until 12:00 Noon tomorrow. Then, slightly cooler and
drier moves into the state tomorrow night, setting the stage for
pleasant spring weather on Thursday and Friday with mostly sunny mild
days and clear, chilly nights.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: At this point it looks like our weather will remain
dry through the weekend. Afternoon highs on Saturday and Sunday should
be in the 75 to 80 degree range with a good supply of sunshine both
days.

STILL VERY DRY: The rain deficit continues to grow across Alabama.
Birmingham's rain total since January 1 is only 7.22"; a whopping
11.11" below normal. The total for entire month of April is only
0.64"; this is typically one of our wettest months of the year.

SOUTH ALABAMA TWISTERS: The major storm system that moved through
Alabama this past weekend produced severe thunderstorms primarily
across the southern half of the state. National Weather Service survey
teams discovered than an EF2 tornado moved through the small community
of Vredenburgh in Monroe County, which is between Camden and
Monroeville. EF1 tornado tracks were identified in Conecuh County near
Castleberry, and in Bullock County south of Union Springs.

REMARKABLE NOR'EASTER: The big storm that is now northeast of Long
Island produced serious problems yesterday and last night across a
wide part of New England, and along the upper Atlantic coast. At Mount
Washington, New Hampshire, winds gusted to 156 miles per hour. The
barometric pressure dropped to 28.77 inches at Danbury, Connecticut
and 28.78 inches at Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Some forecasters say
this is equal to a category one hurricane; others even mention a
category two. Central Park in New York City measured 8.41 inches of
rain through last night, and flooding was reported from New Jersey to
Maine. Thousands of flights have been cancelled, power outages remain
widespread. This is the same system that produced the tornadoes in
South Alabama on Saturday; it also produced tornadoes in South
Carolina Sunday that killed near Sumter. One person died in a car
stalled in deep water in an underpass in New Jersey. The weather will
slowly improve over the northeast U.S. during the next 24 hours.

================================================

CHANCE OF SHOWERS BY WEDNESDAY: Actually, they will start late
Tuesday night, but after midnight and we do not expect a widespread
heavy rain event. The showers will be ending Wednesday, possibly
before midday. We think the average rainfall across this area will be
about 1/3 of an inch. Nights will be cool, but afternoons will be
pleasant. We do not see temperatures returning to the 80s at least
for the next five days. Instead, highs will be mostly in the 70s
except upper 60s on Wednesday and Thursday.

DECEMBER IN APRIL: The high temperatures across Alabama Sunday and
the lows this morning were normal for part of December. That shows
you how unusual this cold air mass was. The temperature dropped below
freezing at some locations. There was scattered frost over at least
the northern third of the state, mostly in low places. Moderate frost
was reported at Cottondale in Tuscaloosa County. A few of the lowest
temperatures this morning was 28 in Cottondale, 30 in Ft. Payne,
Pinson and Concord/Hueytown, 32 in Black Creek and 33 in East
Trussville, Tuscaloosa and Ashville.

THE SATURDAY RAIN EVENT: Not everybody got rain Saturday, but there
were some extremely helpful amounts in both the north and south
sections of the state. However, North-Central Alabama, including
places like Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Anniston, did not get enough
to help the dry weather situation. But look at these amounts. In
South Alabama: 4.20 inches at Atmore, 3.75 at Jackson, 2.96 at
Evergreen, 2.75 at Greenville, 3.24 at Wadley. In North Alabama: 2.01
at Decatur, 1.27 at Huntsville, 1.99 at Meridianville, 1.05 in
Bankhead National Forest.

THE OVERSIZED NORTHEAST STORM: On the weather map today, the
circulation around the gigantic NE storm seems as large or larger
than the circulation around Hurricane Katrina. Some folks are rating
this storm as strong as at least a Category 1 hurricane. The NWS in
New York late this morning reported that parts of New Jersey were
experiencing floods of historic proportions. 8 inches of rain has
fallen over much of the New York City metro area and much of New
Jersey. There were 22-foot waves off Boston. On Mt. Washington, New
Hampshir,e winds this morning gusted as high as 156 mph. 18 inches of
snow at Ava, New York.

THE OTHER McDONALD CHAPEL TORNADO: It happened on April 15, 1956 at
mid-afternoon. Bill Murray had a story about this over the weekend.
Next day after the storm, I toured the area with the legendary Cecil
R. Jobe from the U.S. Weather Bureau. I have an 8x10 photograph
showing how extreme the devastation was in Stacy Hollow. The tornado
touched down on a ridge and slid down that ridge into the bottom of
Stacy Hollow where destruction was extreme. You can easily see how
wide the tornado path was in the photograph as it went up over the
next ridge.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: If I live until tomorrow, I will have
been on this old globe exactly three-fourths of a century. Nikita
Khrushchev also had an April 17 birthday and I named my little
Russian blue cat Nikita. I became very close to that little cat, but
he was killed in traffic and that is why I waited way too long to
risk having another pet. Now I have Little Miss Molly. I had a
forehead-to-forehead talk with her yesterday telling her that I
wanted her to stay around another 15 years, then I will be 90. I want
to outlive and outwork Mike Wallace and Andy Rooney on the CBS 60
Minutes. I feel like I am 45 instead of 75. The only big change is my
IQ being in a freefall. Molly is smarter than me, but I love her....

...Temperatures to Rebound...

It was a chilly, windy day on Sunday across Central Alabama with a
good bit of light rain and drizzle, especially during the morning. We
actually picked up 0.16 of an inch of rain during the day on Sunday.
Barely a drop in the bucket compared to our rainfall deficit. At the
Birmingham Airport, we have sailed past a ten inch deficit and are
about to pass eleven inches. We would have ended up in the 40s for
the day in Birmingham (and Anniston did) save for a couple of hours of
sunshine at the end of the afternoon.

FOR YOUR MONDAY: After a chilly start with readings in the 30s, near
total sunshine is on tap for today across the area. A strong April
sun will allow temperatures to rebound quite nicely, reaching the
upper 60s in most locations. A few lucky spots will hit 70 degrees.
But it still will be windy today, thanks to the intense low pressure
system that has bombed out (strengthened explosively) during the past
36 hours. That low is centered New York City this morning. The
central pressure is around 980 millibars, or as strong as a Category
One hurricane.

REST OF THE WEEK: By Tuesday morning, high pressure will be centered
over Alabama. Meanwhile, a low pressure system will be developing
over western Texas. This low will be our next weather maker. But
don't get your hopes up in the rainfall department around here.
Moisture will be very limited with the system as it moves our way
Tuesday night. We will see a few showers late Tuesday night into
Wednesday morning. Over Central Alabama, amounts will be limited to
around a tenth of an inch. The best rain chances will fall over
southern sections of the state as the weakening low dives toward the
Gulf coast. The airmass behind this system will be very similar to
the one it replaces, and we will see temperatures around 70 Wednesday
through Friday.

Readings will climb back to near 80 by the weekend. By Sunday
morning, low pressure will be over Nebraska. This system will push a
cold front toward Alabama, bringing a chance of showers and storms
Sunday night into Monday. Then we settle into an unsettled pattern,
with the front hanging over Alabama and low pressure to the west
giving us some decent rainfall amounts for a change.

ON THIS DATE IN 1990: But I swear I sent it. Many federal tax
returns being loaded into a truck were blown away in Oklahoma City by
a violent thunderstorm with nearly 100 mph wind gusts. Will Roger's
Airport in Oklahoma City recorded wind gust to 93 mph, strongest there
in 24 years.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: A tornado ripped through downtown Nashville
at rush hour. One person died in the F3 tornado which also injured
100 people. Over 300 buildings were damaged, including the state
capitol. The second F5 of 1998 cut a 46 mile path through Waynesboro,
Deerfield and Summertown, TN less than one week after the Oak Grove
Tornado.

....Severe Weather; Followed By Cooler...

Oh, yeah. Have you filed your taxes? Guess it is that time of year.
At least you get an extra day today since April 15th falls on a
Sunday. So, if you have procrastinated or just plain forgot, better
hop to it.

A COLD ONE TONIGHT: After a cloudy, chilly, windy afternoon, skies
are clearing from the west and winds will be diminishing this evening.
This is going to allow temperatures to drop like a rock. Readings by
late this evening will be in the middle 30s across the area. Moisture
levels will still be high and with the excellent radiational cooling,
we could see some dense fog overnight. Some of the normally colder
locations could flirt with the freezing mark, so take precautions to
protect tender vegetation.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Tomorrow will feature a quick return to mild
temperatures, with a full complement of a strong April sun.
Temperatures will rebound nicely into the upper 60s despite a
continued northerly breeze. Under clear skies Monday night, readings
will drop into the middle 40s in most locations. Tuesday will be
quite nice, with highs in the middle 70s, about perfect for this time
of the year. On Tuesday, low pressure will be developing to the west
of Alabama and moving our way. This means the return of a chance of
showers late Tuesday night into Wednesday. Then benign weather will
follow on the heels of this system, giving us fine weather into the
weekend with temperatures a little above normal.

BIG EAST COAST STORM: The low that passed through Alabama last
night will become a monster low as it moves up the East Coast. By
tomorrow, it will be east of the Delmarva and be as strong as a
Category One hurricane. Advisories, watches and warnings for a
variety of inclement weather blanket the eastern United States from
Alabama to Maine with this system. This could be one of the biggest
East Coast storms in the past few years.

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: Meteorologists in North Carolina were amazed
at the sight on the Doppler radars. An unusually intense supercell
thunderstorm assumed a hurricane-like with an eye-like hole in its
center as it roared across the southeastern part of North Carolina.
The "tornadocane" produced several damaging tornadoes, including one
killer tornado. One of the tornadoes cut a 30 mile damage path.
Winds gusted to an amazing 165 mph just north of Trenton, NC at 10:20
p.m. Other storms in North Carolina killed a man in a mobile home at
Pembroke NC. A Norfolk Southern freight train was blown off the
tracks at Bridgeton. A tornado struck Vienna GA, south of Macon,
during the morning injuring two dozen people.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: An Air China 767 crashed into a mountainside
in rain and fog on approach to the Kimhae Airport in Pusan, South
Korea. 39 of the 167 people on board the plane survived.

...Frost Possible Tonight...

One week ago was the anniversary of the April 8, 1998 tornado. It is
the deadliest tornado in Jefferson County history. Today is the 51st
anniversary of another terrible tornado. It was an F4 tornado that
has something in common with the 1998 F5. It struck the McDonald's
Chapel area also, with devastating effect. More in today's Weather
Blog.

A BUST OF A FORECAST: I am amazed that people get mad when we severe
weather does not materialize. Hello. It is our job as meteorologists
to make sure that we are always prepared. That means that even
systems with marginal severe weather potential must be treated with
respect. And we constantly preached that it was not a classic severe
weather situation, but we still had to monitor. Oneupmanship? On a
blog? Ratings? Sponsorships? Come on. Please. We are here to
provide a public service. Our goal is no fatalities from severe
weather. To have everyone be as prepared and informed as possible.
And be thankful when situations do not pan out. We want to be as
accurate as possible, but a part of it is to prepare for any scenario.

YOUR SUNDAY FORECAST: Today will be a less than pleasant day.
Skies will be cloudy for the better part of the day, with clearing
only in the late afternoon. Throw in a slight chance of a little
light rain or drizzle through the morning hours and it will not be the
best of days. Winds will be quite strong, out of the northwest,
adding to the unpleasantness. Temperatures will barely make it into
the 50s from Birmingham south and readings may stay in the 40s over
North Alabama. Skies will clear about sunset and winds will diminish.
This will set the stage for a very cold night tonight. Average lows
tonight will be in the middle 30s. A few of the normally colder
locations may reach freezing. A widespread frost is possible.
Precautions should be taken to protect any tender vegetation before
tonight.

NEXT WEATHER SYSTEM: Monday will feature a temperature rebound with
highs in the upper 60s. Tuesday looks like an even better day with
highs in the middle 70s. Low pressure will form over Northwest Texas
by Tuesday morning. This low will move eastward, giving us a chance
of showers and a few thunderstorms during the overnight hours Tuesday
night into Wednesday morning. We turn slightly cooler behind the
system on Wednesday, but quickly warm back up with upper 70s Thursday
and Friday. High pressure will remain in control for much of the
following week with a storm system around Thursday the 26th.

CIVIL WAR WEATHER: Private Robert Knox Sneden of the Union Army kept a
detailed journal of his Civil War experiences. On this date in 1862
while stationed outside the Rebel entrenchments at Yorktown, VA, his
entry read: "Rain, probably brought on by the artillery firing
yesterday." There is little evidence that an artillery bombardment
could have brought on the showers.
