...A Very Nice Weekend...

I think that when I find that place that has lows in the upper 40s and
highs in the 70s, I will have to consider that as a future home.
Someone today told me that it is Quito, Ecuador. I was hoping for
somewhere in the United States. So I guess that I will just enjoy our
varied weather right here in good ol' Alabama.

STORM CHASERS MASSING: Storm chasers have been salivating over
today's weather for nearly a week. Their target area today will be
the Central and Southern Plains, especially from the Texas Panhandle
into western Kansas, where the Storm Prediction Center has a Moderate
Risk Outlook for severe weather today. A very strong upper level
trough is moving into the Plains states. The airmass across the
Plains is somewhat unstable this morning. Wind shear profiles are
conducive for severe thunderstorms to form and there will be a short
window where tornadoes will be a good possibility this afternoon,
particularly in the Texas Panhandle around Lubbock. The system will
quickly morph into a massive thunderstorm complex with damaging winds
and large hail.

FOR YOUR WEEKEND: It actually will be quite perfect this weekend
across Alabama. Morning lows will be comfortable, in the upper 40s to
near 50. Daytime highs will warm into the upper 70s to near 80
degrees. Skies will be mostly sunny both days. Get out and enjoy it.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Cool high pressure over the Ohio Valley and South
Atlantic states will move out into the western Atlantic over the next
couple of days. This high will serve to deflect weather systems to
the north of us through the early part of the week. Then it will
break down as a stronger system moves our way. This system will bring
a good chance of showers and storms to Alabama by Wednesday night or
Thursday. The best chance looks like it will be Thursday. Rainfall
amounts may average around an inch with this system, but other recent
systems have showed promise several days out, too. As J.B. saith, a
drought begets a drought. The models hint at more widespread rain
next weekend. Keep your fingers crossed.

ON THIS DATE IN 1952: One reason that officials of the U.S. Weather
Bureau used the fear of public panic as one of their main reasons for
not issuing tornado forecasts for years. When
tornado forecasts began being issued in 1952, the predicted widespread
panic did not happen.

There were isolated reports of people reacting out of fear of the
official warnings, but the incidents were rare. One did happen on
this date, however, as a woman working in a store in Altus, Oklahoma
jumped in her car upon hearing a tornado warning. Her car slid off
into a ditch during a bad rainstorm and she was killed.
