...Picture Perfect Day...

Mr. Russell Cunningham, the President, or Dr. Carol Garrison, the
Chairman of the Board of the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce
could not have ordered more perfect weather than we enjoyed in the
Magic City yesterday. The official high at the Birmingham
International Airport was 78F. That is my precise definition of
perfect for here. It is two degrees above normal for the date. Throw
in a comfortable morning low of 48F and you can't beat it. Get ready
for more of the same the next two days.

NOW THROUGH MIDWEEK: Today will be another day of nearly crystal
clear blue skies, warm temperatures and a nice southerly breeze. Look
for high to pull up just short of 80 degrees at most locations, with a
few spots making the mark. Xerox last night and you have tonight.
Ditto for tomorrow. High pressure is centered near the South Carolina
coast this morning. This high will give us the prominent southerly
flow today, and again for the next couple of days. The stubborn high
pressure will protect us from an encroaching disturbance by deflecting
it to the north in the Monday/Tuesday time frame. A front will try to
approach Alabama from the north on Monday, and then go back north on
Tuesday as a warm front. Can't rule out a shower late Monday into
Tuesday morning over the Tennessee Valley, but Central Alabama stays
high and dry. By Wednesday, another low pressure system will be over
the Central Plains. It will be our next weather maker, and it could
bring us a decent chance of rain.

RAIN IN OUR FUTURE: As it heads northeast, it will push showers and
storms into Alabama during the day on Thursday. Timing is still up in
the air, but it looks safe to say that during the day is the best bet.
The system looks like it will be weakening as it approaches Alabama,
and severe weather is not expected to be a big problem. It is spring
however, so there is a chance. Rainfall amounts should average about
one half inch. Not a drought buster, for sure. But, system number
one will be followed by a second on coming in from the northwest early
on Saturday. Showers may breakout by daybreak on Saturday, with a
good chance of rain and storms during the day on Saturday. I am
reluctant to get excited this far out, but some locations could see
well over an inch of rain on Saturday if you put any stock in the GFS
model.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: A mid-afternoon F2 tornado struck the small
northeast Alabama town of Rainsville without warning, injuring twelve
people. Over thirty homes were damaged by the twister and fifty
buildings in the small town received damage, including the city and
police and fire stations. No tornado warning was in effect at the
time of the storm since the NWS Doppler radar from Birmingham did not
show significant signs of storm rotation because of the distance.
Ironically, another Doppler radar was being prepared for installation
at Hytop, very near the location of the tornado.
