...Sharply Colder...

Record highs were set on Friday at Tuscaloosa and Montgomery with
readings of 78 and 79 degrees respectively. The Tuscaloosa high beat
the old record by four degrees, which was set in 1984. The 79F at
Montgomery tied the record for the date. It is conceivable that more
records could fall today, although extensive cloud cover should hold
sunshine to almost nil.

FROM WARM TO COLD: We will go from highs in the 70s again today to
readings in the middle and upper 30s Sunday morning, then to upper
teens to near 20 Sunday night. This dramatic plunge in temperatures
will result in a hard freeze late Sunday night into early morning, so
our first headline is for you to consider any persons, pets or
property that would be affected by such conditions and take adequate
precautions.

STRONG STORMS TONIGHT? We find ourselves in the warm sector of a
developing cyclone on this Saturday. The low will move by to our
north overnight, pushing a strong cold front through the state
overnight. Scattered storms will develop ahead of the front. The
strength of the cold front and some decent upper level winds will
produce the threat for a few damaging wind events as the squall line
passes between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m., so be in severe weather monitoring
mode just in case. I guess there is the outside chance of a tornado,
but I stress that it is very remote. That means keep the Weatheradio
on alert before going to bed. Did I mention that those make great
Christmas gifts?

SUNDAY/MONDAY: Winter begin officially in the morning and it will
feel like it. Temperatures will plummet to the upper 30s by Sunday
morning. The rain should be all gone by the time you get up Sunday
morning with clearing skies following close behind. Temperatures will
try a late morning rally, but in the face of intense cold air
advection, they will remain in the 40s. Some places may not see 40
again until Tuesday. Hard freeze Sunday night. Monday will be cold
and dry with temperature most locations staying in the 30s in nearly
all locations.

HOLIDAY FORECAST: Temperatures will moderate back into the upper 20s
Monday night and Tuesday will feature highs in the 50s with an
increasing south wind. Look for a late day shower. Highs on
Wednesday will be in the 60s with increasing chance of rain and
storms. We may stay showery through Christmas Day and perhaps into
the weekend. In fact, we may stay very wet into the first week of the
new year.

ON THIS DATE IN 2006: The Front Range of Colorado was blasted by one
of their worst winter storms ever with full blizzard conditions and
two to three feet of snow. The National Weather Service estimated
that most of the Front Range below 6,000 feet got 20-26 inches of
snow. Denver got 20.7 inches, short of the all time record. Boulder
picked up 30.2 inches. Other impressive amounts included 38 inches at
Black Hawk, 34.5 inches at Golden and a whopping 52 inches at Glen
Haven in Buckhorn Canyon. Denver International Airport was closed for
two days, creating travel nightmares for people trying to get home for
the holidays. -

...Storms Tonight; Colder Tomorrow...

Author David Laskin knows Seattle weather, and he should since he
calls the Queen City home. He authored the pre-eminent book on the
weather of the Pacific Northwest. It is called "Rains all the
Time." It has started to feel a little like Seattle for the past few
days here in Central Alabama. Oh, no. I am not complaining. The
gray skies and rain have been quite enjoyable. Looking at a drought
map that shows no drought is a good thing. Being nearly three inches
above normal for the month, with more to go. Gotta love it.

SPRINGLIKE: The atmosphere will have a bit of a springlike feel to
it today. Skies will be cloudy, but it will be warm, with highs
around 70 degrees. A breezy southwest wind will blow at 10-18 mph.
The persistent frontal boundary that has been in the neighborhood for
the better part of the week creating the grunge look to our weather
will be retreating northward, playing the role of warm front. Showers
will break out and move north with the front. Meanwhile, a strong
upper trough is about to put an end to this current run of weather and
it has a nasty surprise in store. You will understand what we mean by
Sunday morning. A surface low will develop to our northwest and slide
along the boundary and a band of showers and storms will move through
the state tonight. Look for about one half inch of rain. Strong
winds are a possibility and there could be a couple of warnings, but
significant severe weather is not expected.

COLD WAVE WARNING: I just love saying that. It probably isn't a
historic cold wave, but tomorrow will be miserable. And Monday will
be as miserable or more. That band of showers and storms will be the
advance guard for a powerful cold front that will follow on the heels
of the strong convection. The front should arrive in Northwest
Alabama after 9 p.m. and sweep quickly through the state. After a
high of 70, and a mid evening temperature in the middle 60s, the
mercury will plunge overnight into the upper 30s by early Sunday
morning. The rain should end by mid-morning. It will be downright
windy, with northwest winds at 15-30 mph. Readings will try to make a
brief rally into the lower 40s as sunshine breaks back out by early
afternoon. But when the skies clear and the sun goes down,
temperatures will plummet into the upper teens. A hard freeze is
likely Sunday night into Monday morning.

HOLDAY WEEK: Monday will be dry and cold. In fact, temperatures may
not make it above freezing over North Alabama. The weather will be in
transition by Monday night. Readings Tuesday morning will start out
in the upper 20s. Winds will pick up out of the south on Tuesday and
it will be windy through Wednesday. Showers will break out Tuesday
night, but the main shower and thunderstorm activity will wait until
late Christmas Eve. We will have to watch out for the potential of
severe weather with another strongly forced system Wednesday night.
Hopefully Santa won't have to divert. That couldn't happen could it?
No real airmass change behind this system, and Christmas Day looks
like it will be mild, with highs in the 60s along with clearing skies.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: A short-lived but powerful tornado ripped
through the small town of Newton, Mississippi during the early
afternoon, hitting a Wal-Mart store. The tornado injured 60 people.
A tanker truck was blown off Interstate 20, causing a diesel spill
that closed the highway. A tornado watch and severe thunderstorm
warning was in effect for Newton when the tornado struck. The call to
action message in the warning stated that tornadoes can form quickly
from severe thunderstorms.

...A Mild Cloudy Saturday...

A 50-DEGREE PLUNGE IN TEMPERATURE: Yes, that headline is not
misleading. We have enjoyed a number of days of unusual December
warmth with daytime temperatures as much as 20 degrees above average.
That is going to come to a screeching halt. However, let us look at
first things first.

Some scattered showers will occur at some point tonight, mainly after
midnight. The old thermometer will go back up to around 70 Saturday
along with some scattered showers. Then, the big change in weather
will come late Saturday night as showers increase in number and we
could even see a few thunderstorms. By Sunday morning, the cold front
will have swept across most of Alabama and showers will end during the
morning. The weather map for Sunday looks very impressive with a huge
strong high-pressure system extending from Southern Canada down into
Texas. This will give us a windy cold day Sunday. Temperatures may
start off at Sunday School time in the mid 40s and be in the 30s by
afternoon. Northwest winds will gust as high as 30 mph on Sunday.

Even though we have had warm weather lately, we are going to switch
rapidly to a hard freeze by early Monday. If our forecast is on track,
the thermometer will be overworked dropping from 70 Saturday afternoon
to 19 Monday morning. Yes, that is a drop of over 50 degrees and it
will really be felt.
Take heart—the extreme cold will not last that long. We expect a
recovery to 54 by Tuesday afternoon and even into the mid 60s by New
Year's Eve.

OUTLOOK CHRISTMAS DAY: Early morning lows should be in the 40s and
highs somewhere in the 50s. We do not expect any snow, so this will be
another snow-less Christmas for Central Alabama.

WEATHER BY THE NUMBERS: 16 below zero at Jordan, Montana was the
coldest in the country this morning. Lowest in Alaska was 28 below
zero at Northway. 28 inches of snow on the ground at Valdez, 20 inches
at Bettles and 12 inches at Whittier, Alaska. Back in the lower 48, a
huge winter storm to contend with. It was sweeping across the Midwest
this afternoon and into the NE and New England. Just a few examples of
the problems: an estimated 60,000 customers without power across
Central Illinois, flights cancelled and schools closed, including New
England and the Northeast, extremely heavy snow falling over New
England with Boston looking for 8 to 10 inches in the next 24 hours. 5
to 10 inches is forecast for New York City.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I am off tomorrow and need to do my
first Christmas shopping. If I had my preference, I would spend the
entire day playing with Little Miss Molly. I am so far behind on that
and, while she does not complain too much, she does give me that deep
stare every trip I make through the living area to get more coffee. I
wish I could pipe the coffee into my office so I would not have to see
her every time I go in there. On second thought, every time I do pass
through the living area, I stop and give her a rubdown. She always
turns upside down for me to rub her belly. Life goes on.

...Much Colder By Sunday...

TWO MORE WARM DECEMBER DAYS: We will continue to project afternoon
highs in the 70 to 73 degree range across North-Central Alabama today
and tomorrow, almost 20 degrees above average values for mid to late
September. The sky will stay mostly cloudy (although there should be a
few peeks of afternoon sunshine), and mornings will feature fog and
drizzle. Any showers today and tomorrow will be rather widely spaced,
and mainly across the Tennessee Valley.

COLD AIR RETURNS: Look for rain to increase in coverage across Alabama
tomorrow night, in advance of an Arctic front that will blow through
here Sunday morning. Sunday will be a different kind of day as colder
air rolls into Alabama; it will almost be like a slap in the face
compared to the recent warm spell. Temperatures will fall into the 40s
Sunday, possibly reach the 30s during the afternoon hours. The icy
northwest wind will drive the wind chill index below freezing much of
the day for areas along and north of I-20. The rain should end Sunday
morning as the cold air begins to arrive, and clearing should begin at
some point Sunday afternoon or Sunday evening.

Look for a hard freeze Monday morning; we are forecasting an average
low of 21 degrees at daybreak Monday, but the colder spots across
North Alabama will most likely be in the teens. Monday will be sunny
but cold with a high in the low 40s.

MORE CHANGES NEXT WEEK: The upper air pattern is such that cold air
won't stick around Alabama for a long time; we will see a warming
trend beginning Tuesday afternoon, and rain should return to the state
Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Then, cooler and drier air will
arrive Wednesday night, setting the stage for a dry and cool Christmas
Day on Thursday. At this time the weather looks mostly sunny for
Christmas Day with a high in the mid 50s, following a morning low near
the freezing mark.

TO THE NORTH: A big time winter storm continues to drop heavy snow and
freezing rain across parts of the Midwest and the Great Lakes region
this morning; the snow total at Chicago is forecast to be near one
foot causing major airport delays. Heavy snow is also likely for
cities like Milwaukee and Detroit. The snow will move into the
Northeast U.S. later today and tonight, and winter storm watches and
warnings cover all of this area. South of the snow, major icing is
likely in the general area from St. Louis to Indianapolis. Thundersnow
was reported last night through parts of Missouri and Iowa. This is
the storm that left 17 inches of snow on the ground at Flagstaff
Airport, in Northern Arizona, and 23 inches on the ground at the North
Rim of the Grand Canyon.

EXTREMES: Warmest places in the nation yesterday were Kingsville,
Texas and Sarasota, Florida with 83 degrees. Bitter cold air continues
over the northern U.S.; cold spots were Cook and Ely; both in
Minnesota, with 27 below zero.

...Dreary Weather Through Sunday...

SHARPLY COLDER BY SUNDAY: More of the same for Alabama for at least
the next couple of days. This includes a low overcast, fog at times,
maybe some patches of drizzle, but mild temperatures. We look for
lower 70s again tomorrow and Saturday. Only a few showers for Friday,
but there will be an increase of showers on Saturday, especially
Saturday night.

THE BIG CHANGE IN WEATHER: That comes on Sunday. A strong high-
pressure system (very strong) will be pushing down from the Northern
Plains and cold air will overrun Alabama quickly on Sunday. The last
model run of the GFS (which is one of our most often used models)
indicates the rain will end in Central Alabama by Sunday afternoon
followed by clearing. Temperatures will fall through the 40s on
Sunday, maybe reaching the upper 30s by late in the day. You will
especially feel the big drop in temperature by Monday morning. We have
posted a low of 23, but it could be around 19 or 20 in some of the
North Alabama valleys. This means a 50-degree plunge in temperature
from Saturday afternoon until Monday morning.

Weather events are moving rather quickly. That big high will move
across Alabama Monday and the wind will return to SE on Tuesday.
Another cold front will approach Alabama on Christmas Eve, but for
Christmas Day Thursday, things are beginning to look chilly and dry,
with temperatures in the 30s when you open your presents Christmas
morning.

A BIG WINTER STORM: A big part of the Central USA is under the gun
for another major winter storm. This includes a broad area across the
nation's midsection into the NE. Two examples include Chicago with
snow and sleet starting tonight and becoming heavy at times with 8 to
13 inches of accumulation tonight and tomorrow. The New York City area
will get 4 to 7 inches of snow and sleet tomorrow. Places like
Missouri, Indiana, Northern Pennsylvania and Michigan will also be
under the gun.
The storm moving out of the SW dumped as much as 4 inches of snow in
the Las Vegas area with as much as 9 inches in the California desert.
The Joshua Tree National Park was closed to the public. In some areas,
the snow fell so fast that snow plows could not keep up.

WEATHER BY THE NUMBERS: 54.18 inches is how much rain Birmingham has
now received in 2008. That pushes us over the limit and we are assured
of a slighter wetter than normal year. Last year on this same date we
had received only 27.36 inches, so we have doubled that this year. 27
below zero at Cook and Ely, Minnesota was the coldest in the lower 48
this morning. In Alaska, it was 28 below in Northway.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Do not know what I am going to get my
Little Miss Molly for Christmas--probably some more balls to play
with. Most of her toys are getting old. The second Christmas we had
her, our friend, Chuck Biddinger, gave her two big rolls of toilet
paper wrapped in Christmas paper. In those days, she was addicted to
that and she once papered our master bedroom with so much toilet paper
that it was like walking on a snow cover. It is interesting to see how
little puppies change as they grow up. Out real early this morning on
our morning walk and Little Miss Molly cried like a baby. She passed
Dino's house (her little Yorkie boyfriend). He had his nose pressed
against the lower windowpane extremely eager to get out and play with
Molly. It was not to be. Life goes on and I have not bought a single
Christmas present. Woe is me.

...December Warm Spell For Alabama...

NOT FEELING LIKE CHRISTMAS: Yesterday's high in Dothan was 80 degrees;
makes you think more of a late spring day on the Gulf Coast instead of
Christmas time. Look for more December warmth through Saturday; here
across the northern half of the state we expect daily highs between 70
and 75 degrees, and more than likely a few record highs will be
established across the Deep South along the way. While mornings will
feature low clouds and fog, intervals of afternoon sunshine are
possible, and any showers today and tomorrow should be very widely
separated, and most likely over the northern third of the state. A few
spots down in South Alabama should reach 80 degrees again each
afternoon through Saturday.

NEXT COLD AIR SHOT: A sharp surface cold front is forecast to pass
through Alabama Sunday, that should bring widespread rain, and a sharp
change to colder weather. We believe temperatures will be in the 50s
during the morning, but look for a fall through the 40s during the day
as cold air moves into the state with a brisk north wind. We believe
the rain will be over Sunday evening before surface temperatures get
down to the freezing mark.
Monday looks like a cold and dry day, with a morning lows in the 20s.
We will struggle to reach the low 40s even with a good supply of
sunshine, and another freeze is likely early Tuesday morning.

WHAT ABOUT CHRISTMAS? We continue to see very good evidence of a big
rain event for Alabama on Christmas Eve, Wednesday December 24. That
rain should end Wednesday evening, followed by a cool and dry
Christmas Day. At this time, we expect a low Christmas morning
somewhere between 26 and 32, with a daytime high in the low 50s.

GLOBAL COOLING: Heavy snow has been falling in Las Vegas; the snow
began to fall across much of the Las Vegas valley early yesterday
afternoon and continued throughout the overnight hours. This will
likely be the biggest snowstorm to impact Las Vegas since 1979, when
7.8 inches of snow was measured at McCarran International Airport.
Last night No flights are taking off or landing at McCarran Airport
due to poor visibility and flights from around the country that are
headed to Las Vegas are being kept on the ground until the weather
improves. See pictures of the Las Vegas snow on the ABC 33/40 Weather
Blog.

ACROSS THE FROZEN TUNDRA: That same winter storm will move out of the
Southwest U.S. and bring heavy snow to parts of the Upper Midwest and
the Great Lakes tonight and tomorrow, where winter storm watches are
in effect. Coldest spot in the nation yesterday morning was Williston,
North Dakota with 24 degrees below zero. Searchers early yesterday
found a pair of hikers from Tucson, Arizona, who apparently were
stranded in a snow-covered forest and mountainous area of central
Arizona.

...Stubborn Clouds Hanging On...

MILD UNTIL LATE IN THE WEEKEND: It seems like a tug-of-war continues
over extreme North Alabama where chilly air does not want to leave the
state and yet warm, moist air from the south is trying to push it out
the door. It is almost like unwelcome guests that do not take a hint
that it is time to go to bed. Early this afternoon, there was a marked
contrast in temperature because it was pushing 80 degrees in parts of
South Alabama with 69 in Birmingham, but only 48 in the Florence/
Muscle Shoals area and 37 across West Tennessee and freezing in
Northern Arkansas. The mild air will eventually be victorious.

We may see some more dense fog tonight and it will not burn off until
mid morning tomorrow. We see only a slight chance of any rain tonight
and Thursday, a better chance on Friday, but not widespread. Still a
better chance on Saturday.

WHEN WILL THE COLD AIR COME AGAIN? It looks like the cold front may
have picked up reinforcements and will come steadily moving through
Alabama on Sunday with a good chance of showers. Even though we will
get accustomed to 72-degree daytime temperatures, the thermometer will
fall all day Sunday and possibly drop to below freezing by Monday
morning. But at least we will have some sunshine Monday and Tuesday.

RAIN CHECK: Some folks got a good amount of rain near where that warm
front was fighting with the cold air yesterday and overnight.
Montgomery and Cullman Airports received about ¾ of an inch. One-half
inch fell in the Tri-County area where Jefferson, Blount and St. Clair
join. Interesting report from Vic Bell, our 33/40 Skywatcher in
Scrougout (NE of Gadsden). They received 1.25 inches of rain in the
last 24 hours binging their 7-day total to an impressive 9.07 in
December. This brings their 2008 total to slightly over 60 inches as
compared to only 38 inches at the same time last year.

INTERESTING WEATHER SPOT: Today we look at Valdez, Alaska. Valdez is
located just inland from the north shore of the Gulf of Alaska. The
city was severely damaged by that huge earthquake on March 27, 1964—
one of the strongest ever in North America. The epicentre was west of
Valdez and east of Anchorage. Anchorage also had unbelievable damage.
They had to rebuild Valdez 4 miles further to the west and the town
boomed again because of the Alaska pipeline. Valdez gets storms off
the Gulf of Alaska and they get much, much snow in the average winter.
This morning they had 28 inches on the ground and they have received
39 inches this month and a whopping 124 inches so far this season.
Sunrise their tomorrow will be at 9:58 and sunset at 3:28. They have
very short days, but not like Barrow where is 24 hours with no sun.

WEATHER BY THE NUMBERS: Sure would hate to pay the heating bills for
some of our northern neighbors. This has been an incredible cold air
outbreak. Some moderation in the last 24 hours with the coldest this
morning 24 below at Williston, North Dakota. Coldest in Alaska was 31
below at Eagle. A nice rebound in Dallas where the high yesterday of
only 32 and forecast to be 64 Thursday.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I enjoyed the reaction of the readers
yesterday when I suggested that Little Miss Molly would make the best
presidential pet. No, no, no they said. In fact, one reader said if I
did that he would come after my hide. Of course, he was teasing and I
was teasing. It would take $100 thousand to buy Little Miss Molly and
I could sure use the money. Life goes on.

...Warm December Weather...

COLD AIR RETREATS: We had quite a temperature contrast across Alabama
yesterday; a stalled front from near Tuscaloosa to Gardendale to
Gadsden was responsible for a 20 degree swing; with temperatures in
the 40s north of the boundary, with 60s to the south. As the front
started moving northward as a warm front late in the day, dense fog
developed over north Alabama in the cool air, reducing visibility to
1/4 mile in a few spots. Also, bands of showers and thunderstorms
moved through North Alabama, producing locally heavy rain in spots
through the evening hours.

The front will move north of Alabama today, and all of the state will
be in the mild, muggy air from the Gulf of Mexico. Afternoon
temperatures today will reach the 60s over the northern half of the
state, with warm 70s over the southern counties. We will maintain the
chance of occasional showers through tonight.
We are projecting highs in the 70s for all of Alabama tomorrow, very
close to record levels for mid- December. Our forecast high of 74
tomorrow is two degrees shy of the record high of 76 set in 1984. The
sun should break out at times thanks to an upper air ridge nosing in
from the south, and we will mention only a small risk of a shower
tomorrow.

Then, rain chances will increase again on Friday and Saturday with the
ridge breaking down slowly and another surface front approaching from
the north. Afternoon highs both days will be at or just over 70 degrees.

COLD AIR SHOT: Cold air will move into Alabama Sunday, this looks like
a day with temperatures falling from the 50s during the morning,
through the 40s, and reaching the 30s by late afternoon. Periods of
rain are likely as the cold air moves into the state Sunday, but at
this time the chance of any frozen or freezing precipitation looks
small. Monday looks like a cold and dry day, with temperatures
struggling to get out of the 30s with a chilly north wind.

The Arctic front should move northward on Tuesday, bringing a warming
trend and also a chance of more rain. At this point, the weather for
Christmas Day looks relatively mild with some potential for rain; we
will be able to be much more specific later this week.

ACROSS THE FROZEN TUNDRA: Coldest places in the nation yesterday were
Longville, Minnesota and Chinook, Montana with 35 degrees below zero.
The afternoon high at Duluth, Minnesota was 4 below zero. Winter
weather advisories of various types cover a large part of the nation;
all the way from Texas to New England. And, out west winter storm
warnings cover a large part of the mountains, all the way down into
Arizona and New Mexico. Storm totals of around two feet are likely at
Flagstaff, Arizona; heavy snow is expected all the way down into the
southern California mountains of San Diego County.

...Battle of the Air Masses...

WARMER AIR THE BIG WINNER: The Alabama countryside became a
battlefield last night as two distinctly opposing air masses fought
for control. Maybe the colder air did not realize it was down in the
SE Conference, because it eventually lost out. Soon after midnight,
temperatures moderated enough in the Tennessee Valley for the National
Weather Service in Huntsville to cancel the freezing rain advisory.

There is still a huge contrast in temperature this afternoon. It was
65 at Birmingham Airport while it was only 48 in Tuscaloosa and 39 in
Muscle Shoals. Southerly winds will continue to push the mild air
northward, so we do not see any immediate threat of wintry
precipitation. Unfortunately, we will have an overdose of cloud cover
and you will not see a great deal of sunshine for the next several
days. Temperatures will warm to unseasonable levels. We are still
expecting a high of 75 by Thursday afternoon. Sooner or later the cold
air that covers so much of the North Country will make a second
assault on our area with the cold front rushing through late in the
weekend and dropping our temperature to the upper 20s by next Tuesday
morning.

RAIN SITUATION: More showers expected tonight. Fewer in number
Wednesday. Only a small risk on Thursday. Showers increasing again on
Friday and scattered showers can be expected Saturday and Sunday.

INTERESTING WEATHER SPOT: Flagstaff is the largest city in Northern
Arizona, but nowhere near the population of Phoenix and Tucson.
Flagstaff is a true oasis. Travelling west on I-40, after you pass the
community of Two Guns (I have been through there many times and still
do not know how it got that name), the terrain starts changing into a
distinct alpine appearance. The Flagstaff Airport is at an elevation
of 7,003 feet, but just north of the city are the highest mountains in
the state known as the San Francisco Peaks. Humphrey's Peak is the
highest with an elevation of 12,670 feet. So you go from desert to ski
country. There was 10 inches of snow on the ground at Flagstaff this
morning and they are expecting as much as 10 to 14 inches additional
through tomorrow and even more heavy snow after midnight Wednesday
night.

WEATHER BY THE NUMBERS: 35 below zero at Longville, Minnesota was the
lower 48 cold spot this morning. I have never seen that town mentioned
before. Denver had a low of minus 11 after a high of only 2 yesterday.
As much as 4 inches of snow in Clarke County Nevada. That is Las Vegas
country. At one point last night, Decatur was reporting light freezing
rain with 36 degrees. That can happen sometimes when the rain falls on
a super cool surface, but I sure have my doubts about last night.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It occurred to me that maybe I should
donate Little Miss Molly as the White House puppy for the Obama
children. She would not only make a top notch pet, but she would
become the most diplomatic living being in all of Washington. Just
teasing, of course, but she would be a huge success. Life goes on and
I would never give up Little Miss Molly.

...Record Warmth Possible By Thursday...

COLD AIR NOT FAR AWAY: It has been very interesting to watch the
progression of the bitterly cold air that covers much of the nation
this morning; the leading edge of that cold air clipped into Northwest
Alabama yesterday afternoon, with temperatures in the Shoals area
falling into the low 30s late last night. The front seemed to come to
a halt along a line from near Sulligent to Carbon Hill to Decatur and
to Huntsville. There is a chance of some light freezing rain or
drizzle this morning around Florence and Muscle Shoals, and a freezing
rain advisory was issued for Lauderdale and Colbert counties last
night due to the possibility of some icy bridges in the northwest
corner of the state. The most serious icing will be over West
Tennessee, extreme North Mississippi, and Arkansas.

THE REST OF THE STATE: For Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Gadsden, and points
south, mild weather is the story today with highs in the 60s. And, a
moist airmass and a persistent southwest flow aloft will mean
occasional showers. The showers should thin out a bit tonight and
tomorrow as the stalled front lifts northward as a warm front, putting
even the northwest counties in mild air.

RECORD HIGHS? Looks like Thursday will be the warmest day this week;
we are forecast a high Thursday of 75 degrees; the record high for
Birmingham for December 18 is 76 degrees set in 1984, we will be very
close to that figure. Some upper 70s are possible for some communities
across West and South Alabama. The chance of a shower Thursday looks
small at this time thanks to an upper ridge nosing in here from the
south. The sky will be partly sunny.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Rain should increase again Friday and Saturday
as the Arctic boundary begins to drop south. The leading edge of the
cold air should push farther into Alabama at some point over the
weekend; for now it looks like we will have a hard time getting out of
the mid 40s Sunday with periods of rain. We should note here
forecasting shallow layers of cold air near the surface is a very hard
thing to do; temperatures could be significantly cooler, so stay tuned
for possible forecast changes in coming days. The cold air shot should
be temporary; we expect temperatures to rise again during the middle
of next week as we approach Christmas Day.

BRUTAL COLD: Bitterly cold air covers much of the nation, except the
East Coast and the Southeast. Coldest spot in the nation yesterday
morning was Port of Morgan, Montana with 34 degrees below zero. The
high in Fargo, North Dakota was 11 below zero. For some cities up
north, this is the coldest air since January 2005, or almost four
years. Winter weather advisories of various types are in effect for
much of the nation in a band from Texas to Pennsylvania, and out west
across much of the mountainous region. Flagstaff, Arizona is expecting
a storm total of around two feet of snow. And, heavy rain across
Southern California has produced flooding, especially across the areas
burned by wildfires earlier in the fall.

...Keeping Arctic Air At Bay...

MILD WEATHER FOR CENTRAL ALABAMA: Sure we get a bit nervous when a
big arctic air mass comes rushing down from Alaska and Canada and acts
like it might go all the way to South America. That is a big
exaggeration of course, but much colder air has pushed as far south as
North Mississippi and West Tennessee.

We have numerous situations to watch over the next two days. A broad
SW flow aloft will tend to be the blocking agent to keep the much
colder air away from Central Alabama. There will be a series of minor
disturbances moving along through that flow and, at some point, we
will see a change to colder. We think that will not happen until this
weekend. We are looking for low temperatures to finally drop to the
30s by Monday morning after it starts turning colder on Sunday.

Until then, we look for mild temperatures and even getting above 70
for Wednesday through Friday. Also in the mix are intermittent periods
of rain and maybe even a few thunderstorms. Probably our better chance
of getting wet will be Wednesday or Thursday. We do not see a major
rain event in any of this.

In the Tennessee Valley of extreme North Alabama, temperatures will be
lower as some of the cold air pushes into that area. By tomorrow
morning, temperatures will cool to the 40s and stay in the 50s
tomorrow. Tuesday night and Wednesday a warm front will push back
north and give them mild weather also.

THE MEMPHIS SITUATION: The NWS is continuing an Ice Storm Warning
until noon tomorrow with up to ¼ ice accumulation. That does not sound
like much, but it can cause real problems. A Freezing Rain Advisory is
in effect for Nashville between midnight and mid morning. Further
north, look for 2 to 3 inch accumulations of snow, sleet and freezing
rain in Louisville.

WEATHER BY THE NUMBERS: Bitter, bitter cold covers the northern USA.
Some observers say it is the coldest in many years. The temperature
dropped to 33 below this morning in Havre, Montana. The wind chill was
an incredible 52 below zero in that same area, which is definitely
life threatening. Along the cold front we have seen some drastic
temperature drops. In Wichita Falls, Texas it was 81 Sunday afternoon,
but it was near 20 this morning with a wind chill near zero. 15 to 25
inches of snow expected at Flagstaff, Arizona in the next 36 hours. At
Medicine Hat, Alberta, the wind chill was 56 below this morning.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly had a real dogmare
soon after going to bed late last night. She was yipping loudly. I
have an idea she was dreaming about the little community rabbit who
had gotten so big that he was chasing her instead of her chasing him.
She may also have been dreaming about another great escapade. She
seemed to enjoy that one last week so much. She is a busy little girl.
Our other granddaughter is here for Christmas from Troy University, so
now our in-house population has increased to 7. Little Miss Molly
loves that. It multiplies greatly the attention she gets. Life goes on.

...Back To Interesting...

Winter weather advisories are in effect to our northwest this morning
as the leading edge of a powerful Arctic airmass edges into the
Southeast. Freezing rain is expected to develop this afternoon in
western Tennessee as temperatures drop below 32F. Sleet and freezing
rain is expected to overspread Arkansas. Could this be a preview of
things to come for us by the weekend?

RAIN SHOWERS IN OUR FUTURE: The cold front is over northwestern
Mississippi and western Tennessee this morning. The front will make
it into Northwest Alabama by late this afternoon. Showers and
isolated thunder will increase across Central Alabama ahead of the
front. Some precipitation will also fall behind the front, and that
leads to a bit of concern about freezing rain in the Northwest corner
of the state tomorrow night. The front will slide back northward on
Tuesday, but will remain close enough to produce more rain over mainly
North Alabama Tuesday and Tuesday night. The big ridge of high
pressure over South Georgia and North Florida will flex its muscles on
Wednesday, sending a surge of warmer air into Alabama from the south.
It will feel positively springlike, with highs in the 70s and a breezy
south wind. Look for more of the same on Thursday.

CHANGE TO COLDER By Friday morning, that persistent front will be
back, this time wearing its Arctic look. Rain and perhaps a
thunderstorm will fall through the day on Friday. The front will
take its time slicing through Alabama, but at some point on Saturday,
temperatures should start a steady fall. Meanwhile, the southwesterly
flow aloft will continue to pump moisture into the area and
disturbances rippling along in the flow trigger waves of low pressure
along the front. This will result in periods of precipitation on
Saturday. Those waves will continue into Sunday, and by then
temperatures may well be dropping below freezing, starting first in
the Northwest, and gradually sliding southeastward. If this scenario
plays out, we could be dealing with freezing rain or sleet on Sunday
This is the kind of setup that could produce significant icing, and it
is one that will have to be watched.

NOT HYPE, JUST A HEADS UP: I want to caution our readers that the
potential for wintry weather is not a forecast at this time, but model
consistency is increasing and it certainly is a potential scenario.
We are not trying to hype an event, just provide early notice of the
potential. We always show our work and let you interpret the
potential along with us.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: KLM Flight 867, a 747 with 231 passengers and
crew on board, lost power in all four engines as it flew through the
ash plume from Alaska's Mount Redoubt volcano. The powerless aircraft
lost ten thousand feet in altitude as the crew frantically tried to
restart the engines. Fortunately, their efforts were successful, and
the plane landed safely at Anchorage. Damage to the plane amounted to
$80 million. At least eighty airplanes have been damaged by ash from
volcanoes worldwide since 1980. No plane has ever crashed as a result
of volcanic ash, although it came very close to happening in the case
of the KLM incident.

...Unsettled Week Ahead...

Not much of a warm up on this mid-December Sunday across Central
Alabama. Noontime temperatures were in the lower and middle 50s
across the western and southern sections of the areas. Parts of
Northeast Alabama were struggling to get out of the 40s. Those areas
were still experiencing a bit of a wedge effect out of Northwest
Georgia. Skies were mostly cloudy, with just an occasional peak at
the sun, mostly over the Tennessee Valley. Some light radar returns
were showing up on radar across Central Alabama, but it was generally
not reaching the ground. It was raining at Mobile, where moisture
levels and depths were higher. Scott McClellan reports it is raining
to beat the band on Dauphin Island.

CHANGE TO MILDER/WETTER: Alabama will be under a southwesterly flow
aloft for much of the week ahead. This will protect Alabama from the
bitterly cold air that is destined for the nation's midsection through
much of the week ahead. Next weekend may be a different question.
That air has to come south sometime, one would believe. The leading
edge of that Arctic airmass will be delineated by a front that will be
t he main player in our weather over the next six days or so. There
are significant differences in opinion as to what the front will do,
and those could portend changes in the forecast. But the consensus is
that the front will slide into Central Alabama on Monday, then weaken
and retreat northward on Tuesday. It will hang around just to the
north of us in the Wednesday and Friday time frame, venturing south
enough to enhance our rain chances a bit a couple of times Day by
day, it looks like Monday will feature pretty good shower chances.
Tuesday will be mild with enough instability for a few showers and
maybe some thunder. Wednesday and Thursday look mainly dry precip
wise, with more mild and slightly humid conditions prevailing. Friday
will feature a good chance of showers and storm as the front tries to
move through. Then it could get interesting.

NEXT WEEKEND: That big Arctic airmass could try to move into North
Alabama by next weekend as the sheer weight of the cold air carries it
southward. Waves rippling along the frontal system on Saturday and
Sunday could bring a couple of batches of precipitation to North and
Central Alabama. The combination could be interesting. One scenario
that has been advanced is that the front could slowly slide southward
Saturday and Sunday, allowing the surface freezing line to slide
southward through the day on Sunday. This could lead to a wintry mix
of sleet or freezing rain starting in Northwest Alabama and
progressing southward through the day and overnight. This is a setup
that could favor a freezing rain event, which is not desirable.
Remember, it is one model run, but it is certainly a plausible
scenario and one that we will have to be ready for if it occurs.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: The temperature at Helena MT plunged an
unbelievable 79 degrees in 24 hours and 88 degrees in 34 hours from 63
above to 25 below zero. At Fairfield MT, the mercury plummeted 84
degrees in just 12 hours, going from 63 to 21 below zero at midnight,
and establishing the US record for a 12 hour temperature fall.

...Rain Chances To Increase Again...

I hope that you got to enjoy another brilliant full moon last
evening. Skies cooperated for the most part, clearing out for a
beautiful sunset and moonrise. A few hardy souls may have camped out
late to catch a few Geminid meteors. The bright moon conspired to
mask all but the larger shooting stars, but I hope you saw a couple.

MILDER, RAIN AHEAD: After a chilly first two weeks of December, we
will be heading into a period of milder weather here in Central
Alabama. In fact, the transition is already under way. Many spots
across Central Alabama bottomed out in the 30s during the evening
hours last night, before temperatures rose again on the backs of
southeasterly winds. Those southeasterly winds will freshen today,
pumping in moisture and relatively warmer air. This will allow the
mercury to reach near 60 degrees in most locations this afternoon.
Temperatures will not fall very far tonight, with readings by morning
in the lower and middle 50s. Dewpoints will steadily rise during the
day and into the overnight, signaling an increase in moisture. Today
will be mostly cloudy, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a few
showers break out by this afternoon. They will become more likely as
we head through the overnight hours tonight.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The theme is pretty set for the week ahead. A ridge
of high pressure over the Gulf blocking our primary source of
moisture, but a southwesterly flow aloft over the Deep South will
bring in Pacific moisture and disturbances. The strong ridge of high
pressure will find itself in an increasing tug of war with a
powerfully cold airmass over Alaska. The leading edge of this bubble
of cold air is producing blizzard conditions over the Dakotas and
Montana. The frigid air will sink southward over the Plains in the
week ahead, eventually settling as far south as the Texas Panhandle
and Oklahoma. The battle ground between warm air to the southeast and
the dense cold air will produce precipitation. The front will sag
into western Tennessee by Monday morning, enhancing our shower chances
on Monday.

The eventual southward extent is uncertain, but it is likely to
retreat early Tuesday as a warm front. The front will vacillate to
our north through much of the week ahead. We will be in a relatively
springlike airmass Tuesday through Thursday, with highs around 70
degrees. Showers and storms will be possible in this time frame, but
timing is difficult to pinpoint. It looks like the best chance will
occur on Friday, as the front makes a move our way. Still no sign of
a huge Arctic blast headed our way in the next 14 days, but with all
that cold air lurking to the north, it will have to be watched.

TROPICS: There have been signs that we might see a tropical or
subtropical develop over the open Atlantic north of the Antilles this
week. If it does, it would be Renee.

ON THIS DATE IN 1971: A tornado passed over the National Weather
Service office at Springfield, Missouri at 1125 PM CST. The terminal
building at the Springfield Airport received considerable damage. The
station's wind recording equipment was about 1000 yards from the
center of the tornado path, but the anemometer still had one cup blown
off of it. The guest recorder went past its maximum of 100 mph. The
barometer dropped to 28.83 inches.
