...Battle of the Air Masses...
WARMER AIR THE BIG WINNER: The Alabama countryside became a
battlefield last night as two distinctly opposing air masses fought
for control. Maybe the colder air did not realize it was down in the
SE Conference, because it eventually lost out. Soon after midnight,
temperatures moderated enough in the Tennessee Valley for the National
Weather Service in Huntsville to cancel the freezing rain advisory.
There is still a huge contrast in temperature this afternoon. It was
65 at Birmingham Airport while it was only 48 in Tuscaloosa and 39 in
Muscle Shoals. Southerly winds will continue to push the mild air
northward, so we do not see any immediate threat of wintry
precipitation. Unfortunately, we will have an overdose of cloud cover
and you will not see a great deal of sunshine for the next several
days. Temperatures will warm to unseasonable levels. We are still
expecting a high of 75 by Thursday afternoon. Sooner or later the cold
air that covers so much of the North Country will make a second
assault on our area with the cold front rushing through late in the
weekend and dropping our temperature to the upper 20s by next Tuesday
morning.
RAIN SITUATION: More showers expected tonight. Fewer in number
Wednesday. Only a small risk on Thursday. Showers increasing again on
Friday and scattered showers can be expected Saturday and Sunday.
INTERESTING WEATHER SPOT: Flagstaff is the largest city in Northern
Arizona, but nowhere near the population of Phoenix and Tucson.
Flagstaff is a true oasis. Travelling west on I-40, after you pass the
community of Two Guns (I have been through there many times and still
do not know how it got that name), the terrain starts changing into a
distinct alpine appearance. The Flagstaff Airport is at an elevation
of 7,003 feet, but just north of the city are the highest mountains in
the state known as the San Francisco Peaks. Humphrey's Peak is the
highest with an elevation of 12,670 feet. So you go from desert to ski
country. There was 10 inches of snow on the ground at Flagstaff this
morning and they are expecting as much as 10 to 14 inches additional
through tomorrow and even more heavy snow after midnight Wednesday
night.
WEATHER BY THE NUMBERS: 35 below zero at Longville, Minnesota was the
lower 48 cold spot this morning. I have never seen that town mentioned
before. Denver had a low of minus 11 after a high of only 2 yesterday.
As much as 4 inches of snow in Clarke County Nevada. That is Las Vegas
country. At one point last night, Decatur was reporting light freezing
rain with 36 degrees. That can happen sometimes when the rain falls on
a super cool surface, but I sure have my doubts about last night.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It occurred to me that maybe I should
donate Little Miss Molly as the White House puppy for the Obama
children. She would not only make a top notch pet, but she would
become the most diplomatic living being in all of Washington. Just
teasing, of course, but she would be a huge success. Life goes on and
I would never give up Little Miss Molly.
