...Rain Chances To Increase Again...

I hope that you got to enjoy another brilliant full moon last
evening. Skies cooperated for the most part, clearing out for a
beautiful sunset and moonrise. A few hardy souls may have camped out
late to catch a few Geminid meteors. The bright moon conspired to
mask all but the larger shooting stars, but I hope you saw a couple.

MILDER, RAIN AHEAD: After a chilly first two weeks of December, we
will be heading into a period of milder weather here in Central
Alabama. In fact, the transition is already under way. Many spots
across Central Alabama bottomed out in the 30s during the evening
hours last night, before temperatures rose again on the backs of
southeasterly winds. Those southeasterly winds will freshen today,
pumping in moisture and relatively warmer air. This will allow the
mercury to reach near 60 degrees in most locations this afternoon.
Temperatures will not fall very far tonight, with readings by morning
in the lower and middle 50s. Dewpoints will steadily rise during the
day and into the overnight, signaling an increase in moisture. Today
will be mostly cloudy, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a few
showers break out by this afternoon. They will become more likely as
we head through the overnight hours tonight.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The theme is pretty set for the week ahead. A ridge
of high pressure over the Gulf blocking our primary source of
moisture, but a southwesterly flow aloft over the Deep South will
bring in Pacific moisture and disturbances. The strong ridge of high
pressure will find itself in an increasing tug of war with a
powerfully cold airmass over Alaska. The leading edge of this bubble
of cold air is producing blizzard conditions over the Dakotas and
Montana. The frigid air will sink southward over the Plains in the
week ahead, eventually settling as far south as the Texas Panhandle
and Oklahoma. The battle ground between warm air to the southeast and
the dense cold air will produce precipitation. The front will sag
into western Tennessee by Monday morning, enhancing our shower chances
on Monday.

The eventual southward extent is uncertain, but it is likely to
retreat early Tuesday as a warm front. The front will vacillate to
our north through much of the week ahead. We will be in a relatively
springlike airmass Tuesday through Thursday, with highs around 70
degrees. Showers and storms will be possible in this time frame, but
timing is difficult to pinpoint. It looks like the best chance will
occur on Friday, as the front makes a move our way. Still no sign of
a huge Arctic blast headed our way in the next 14 days, but with all
that cold air lurking to the north, it will have to be watched.

TROPICS: There have been signs that we might see a tropical or
subtropical develop over the open Atlantic north of the Antilles this
week. If it does, it would be Renee.

ON THIS DATE IN 1971: A tornado passed over the National Weather
Service office at Springfield, Missouri at 1125 PM CST. The terminal
building at the Springfield Airport received considerable damage. The
station's wind recording equipment was about 1000 yards from the
center of the tornado path, but the anemometer still had one cup blown
off of it. The guest recorder went past its maximum of 100 mph. The
barometer dropped to 28.83 inches.
