...Unsettled Weather Ahead...

SIX MORE WEEKS OF WINTER: It's official! Our friends at the
Birmingham Zoo report that Birmingham Bill, our local groundhog,
emerged from his den to make his annual Groundhog Day appearance. He
did see his shadow. That means six more weeks of winter for us here
in Alabama.

WARM UP AHEAD: The folklore is nice, but the thermometer
will not be cooperating. In fact, readings will feel increasingly
like spring over the next couple of days. Temperatures this afternoon
are topping out right around 60 degrees, about 15 degrees warmer than
yesterday. We will warm up another 2-4 degrees tomorrow and will be
in the 70s on Monday. A big Bermuda type high pressure system over
the western Atlantic is acting like a giant pump, pushing warm, moist
air northward out of the Gulf.

SHOWERS AND STORMS: In addition, a big trough over the
western United States has Alabama in a southwesterly flow aloft. It
is spreading Pacific moisture our way. So moisture levels will be
increasing at the surface and aloft. Showers will begin to break out
on Sunday, and a fairly widespread rain event looks likely for late
Sunday afternoon and Sunday night into Monday. Over one inch of rain
is expected across the northern half of the state through Monday
evening.

STRONG STORMS FOR TUESDAY: By Tuesday, the big trough of
low pressure will swing our way. It will be very deep and powerful.
With nearly four days of moisture influx here in the Deep South, along
with warm temperatures, instability will be on the increase as the
trough approaches. This will lead to showers and thunderstorms on
Tuesday. Wind shear values will be very high, so t he potential for
rotating thunderstorms will be there. The storms may become severe
over much of Alabama. In addition, a long squall line will form late
in the day and rush
towards Alabama. A significant wind damage event is possible with
this line. It is a developing situation that will be better defined
in later forecasts, but needless to say, it will be one to watch.

SNOWBOUND TRAIN! In January 1952, the Southern Pacific
streamliner train the City of San Francisco became snowbound as it
tried to cross the Sierra Mountains at Donner Pass. It would be three
long, frustrating days as the train was stuck in the grips of a
horrific Sierras blizzard. Yesterday, both the eastbound and the
westbound AMTRAK California Zephyr passenger trains became stranded
when a snowplow damaged the tracks. The westbound train and its 165
passengers were pulled back to Reno late last night, where the
passengers were put up in hotels. The eastbound Zephyr could not be
moved, and the passengers remained on the train, but there was plenty
of food, lights and heat.

TORNADO DROUGHT: A fifty two day streak of no tornadoes
anywhere in the United States came to an end on this date in 1986. No
twister had occurred anywhere in the country since December 11, 1985.
The streak is the longest in recorded American weather history.

...Six More Weeks Of Winter...

HAPPY CANDLEMAS DAY: February 2nd is Candlemas Day. It is a
Catholic Festival that celebrates the presentation of Christ in the
temple or the Feast of the Purification of Mary. In the days before
the ABC 3340 website, and NOAA Weather Radio and The Weather Channel,
farmers relied on weather lore to help them make sense of the
atmosphere. This feast fell in the middle of the dead of winter. But
it also was about the time that many animals ended their annual
hibernation. So, a significant piece of weather folklore developed
around this date. But not many people know why a groundhog seeing its
shadow could signify six more weeks of winter. The actual basis of
the folklore is rooted in meteorology, to a degree. Farmers knew that
their crops needed a long, steady winter. A good snowcover was a
bonus. A good winter was followed by a slow thaw. But, a midwinter
warm spell could spell big trouble if crops thawed, followed by a
damaging refreeze. If the animal waking from its deep slumber was
blinded by sun and ran back into its den, that meant it was bright and
sunny, a sign of a dangerous warm spell. That was the last thing a
farmer wanted to see.

CHANGEABLE PATTERN: Birmingham Bill, our local groundhog, did see
his shadow when he emerged from his den at our zoo this morning. The
folklore is right. It is an active weather pattern. One that could
be a problem later for crops if it continues. We know that the put a
lot more faith in real science today, but it is fun to consider. And
knowing the basis of such signs does help us all understand the
atmosphere a little better. That active weather pattern will be with
us for the foreseeable future. Today will be partly cloudy and milder
with a high around 60. Look for a low near 40 tonight. Tomorrow will
feature increasing clouds as Gulf moisture increases on southerly
winds. There could be a few showers, but the chance is small. Monday
looks like a mild and breezy day with a chance of showers and storms
as a big trough approaches.

SEVERE WEATHER TUESDAY: By Tuesday morning, low pressure will be
north of Memphis. Alabama will be in the warm sector of the cyclone,
settings the stage for severe weather. With two days of the Gulf
being open for business, there will certainly be plenty of warm, moist
air in place. So, it looks like instability levels will be rather
high. There will be ample wind shear in place for rotating
thunderstorms, so it is a situation that will have to be watched
carefully. It is too early to define a specific threat or time frame,
but suffice to say Tuesday and Tuesday evening will be a time of
concern.

REST OF THE WEEK: Some wrap around moisture may hang around on
Wednesday, resulting in slow clearing and perhaps some light rain
during the day. By
Thursday morning, low temperatures will be around freezing. High
pressure will result in fair and seasonable conditions into the
weekend. Our next rain system will wait until the following Tuesday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1952: The only tropical storm in recorded history to
hit the U.S. in February crossed southern Florida from the Gulf of
Mexico. Winds gusted to 60 mph and 2-4 inches of rain fell.

SUNSHINE FOR SATURDAY: Please enjoy Saturday, because that will be
the nicest weather day we have for a while. Afternoon temperatures
will climb into the lower 60s, but they will start off with a frosty
28. Starting Sunday, we will be going through a period of mild weather
and it looks like that could last possibly into the middle of next week.

And you know what mild weather means this time of year—more showers
and thunderstorms. The first ones will show up at some point later
Sunday and increase in number late in the day and at night. There will
be a good chance of showers and thunderstorms Monday and Tuesday as
temperatures top out above 70. Those two days will also be rather
windy with southerly winds anywhere from 15 to 30 mph. We are in for
another good rain event during those storms. Between Sunday and late
Tuesday, do not be surprised to see between 1 and possibly 2 inches of
rain.

LOOK OUT FOR TUESDAY: Ingredients are beginning to mix that could
point to a severe weather day on Tuesday. This is only Friday, so we
cannot be specific, but we will watch it closely as the time melts away.

THE SOAKING RAIN: It was a great rain event yesterday and last night.
I believe that every town and farm in the whole state got at least a
decent amount of rain—enough to be at least temporarily beneficial.
Dozens of communities received over 1 inch of rain and a number of
communities, mainly in South Alabama, received between 2 and 4 inches.
One person in West Alabama said his farm pond rose 4 feet. We have a
long list of rain amounts on the 33/40 weather blog—far too numerous
to repeat here.

A WHAT IF FOR THE GREAT SMOKIES: Mount LeConte, in the Great Smoky
Mountain National Park, had 2 inches of snow on the ground this
morning with a low of 26. It is interesting to note that they received
almost 3 inches of rain in the last 24 hours. If their temperature had
been a few degrees colder, they could easily have received 25 to 30
inches of snow.

THE WORLD AROUND US: Snow is really piling up in many sections of the
country. Another band of snow yesterday covered the Central Plains
into the Midwest. There was a 40-vehicle pile up on I-40 in the Texas
Panhandle. There is still an overdose of bitter cold arctic air in the
Far North. Even this afternoon it was as cold as 45 below in the NW
Territory and 54 below in the north part of the Yukon Territory.
Extremes for the lower 48 states included 83 in Naples, Florida
yesterday and 15 this morning in Alamosa, Colorado.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: One of the most enjoyable things about
writing this little column is the e-mail that we receive. I have lost
count, but we have received well over 3,000 messages since Little Miss
Molly came into our home 5 years ago. I usually do not use them word
for word unless I get permission first, but I wanted to repeat what a
couple in Blount County wrote. "Your stories of Miss Molly are always
so interesting. My wife and I are animal lovers. We live in rural
Blount County where the good Lord sends us strays to take care of. We
have lots of cats, dogs, goats, donkeys, ducks and so on. We always
read the adventures of Miss Molly along with your forecast." That note
made me feel real good. There is something magic about Little Miss
Molly. She can triple my attitude just by walking in my office. I only
know two people that do not like Molly and those two have an extreme
dislike for all dogs, but life goes on......

...A Good Soaking...

CLOUDS MOVE OUT TODAY: What a soaking! We sure have been lucky
recently to get a whole series of good rain events. Several months ago
it seemed like every rain event fizzled as the system got closer. Late
yesterday and last evening a broad area of moderate to heavy rain,
interspersed with thunderstorms, spread across Alabama. It did so slow
enough that many communities were able to get a drenching. We will
post a run down of rain amounts on the blog later this morning, but
early reports show that numerous communities received over 1 inch.
Here are a few amounts, but they are not complete:

0.90 at Carbon Hill in Walker County0.76 Haleyville0.89 Jasper0.61
Sayre in West Jefferson County1.32 Roebuck in NE Birmingham1.14 Cuba,
0.67 Oxford

Cooler and much drier air will sweep across the area today with
clearing. Temperatures will drop to just under freezing tonight.
Saturday looks real nice with near total sunshine and a high of 61.
After that, some more good rain chances. In fact, we have included
showers for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. It appears that Central
Alabama during that three-day span could get as much as 2 inches of
rain. And how about that 68 high for Monday.

THE WORLD AROUND US: South Florida was spring-like
yesterday with a high of 83 in Naples. Early morning lows included 32
below at International Falls, Minnesota and 47 below at Arctic
Village, Alaska and Mayo in the Yukon Territory of NW Canada. There
was some scattered wind damage across SE Mississippi yesterday
afternoon where a Tornado Watch was posted and there was several
Severe Thunderstorm Warnings.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly had an
encounter with the CC yesterday. The Community Can and the CR
(Community Rabbit) get her more excited than anything else. I never
have understood why little doggies have that built-in instinct to
chase rabbits and cats. Fortunately, I have her on a leash. The CC
always stops and hisses and Little Miss Molly certainly understands
that language. She will go within about 5 feet of the cat and stop.
Just another little slice of nature before my eyes. Life goes on.

================================================

GOOD RAIN EVENT TONIGHT: We are in an active weather pattern at this
time with a series of low-pressure areas tracking mostly across the
Southern and Central USA, which puts Alabama close enough to the
action to get some good rain amounts.

Our first good rain event is peeping around the corner. A line of
thunderstorms this afternoon extended from West Tennessee down across
Mississippi to South Louisiana. A Tornado Watch covered SE Louisiana
and extreme South Mississippi.

That line of storms will continue marching eastward crossing Alabama
during the night. The Storm Prediction Center has about the south half
of Alabama under a Slight Risk of severe weather. Much of that depends
on how far north rich moisture (higher dew points) can penetrate
inland. We believe the further south you go, probably the better risk.

RAIN ON OUR MIND: Everybody loves rain these days for obvious
reasons. The whole state should get rain overnight. It will be ending
over the eastern half of the state early tomorrow morning as a cold
front moves across. Here in Central Alabama, there is an excellent
chance that we could soak up between 1 inch and 1.50 inches overnight.
After that, scattered showers will start again Sunday afternoon and
Sunday night. We believe next Monday will present us with a good
chance of showers and possible thunderstorms and with some locally
heavy amounts of rain.

Friday will be a bit chilly with highs in the upper 40s, but look for
some mild temperatures in the afternoons starting during the weekend.
In fact, by Monday we look for upper 60s.

WINTER TWO-THIRDS OVER: According to weather people, we have only one
more month of winter. We consider December, January and February
winter and spring starts on March 1. That is not exactly what you will
find the calendar says.

STORM ALERT 2008: The first program is at 7:00 tonight at Oak Grove
High School in West Jefferson County. That school was destroyed by the
vicious F5 tornado in 1998. Be sure and get there early. There will be
some excellent segments, including a look back at that vicious tornado.

THE WORLD AROUND US: TV pictures show about 4 inches of snow in
Jerusalem—most unusual. A big segment of the Central USA into the NE
is facing another winter storm. It is getting to be a habit. Bitter
cold also. The high in Thief River Falls, Minnesota yesterday was 17
below. Coldest this morning was 32 below in International Falls,
Minnesota and 58 below at Chalkyitsik, Alaska. Buffalo received 68 mph
wind gusts out of the last storm. Did you know that the Amazon forest
was the world's largest absorber of carbon dioxide?

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly spends so much time
sitting on my desk now that she keeps my desk clean by swishing that
little bushy tail—including my keyboards. She is a major hindrance to
my work, because I cannot resist stopping, hugging her neck and
talking to her. When she is on my desk, our eye levels are the same
and I cannot resist her charm. Life goes on......

...Beneficial Rain Tonight...

ANOTHER GOOD SOAKING AHEAD: Southerly winds will increase across
Alabama today in advance of a major storm system that will form to the
west. A few showers should develop this afternoon, but we believe the
bulk of the rain will come from about 4:00 p.m. today through 4:00
a.m. tomorrow. Beneficial rain is likely for all of Alabama, we
project average rain amounts of one inch, but some spots could get
more. There could also be a few thunderstorms involved, but with
stable air near the surface, severe weather should not be a problem
around here. The best chance of severe weather will be near the Gulf
coast, where there will be a limited amount of surface based
instability available.

Northwest of Alabama, heavy snow will likely develop back in the cold
air over parts of northern Arkansas, Northwest Oklahoma, Southwest
Missouri, and Southeast Kansas. The snow will
spread northeast tonight into parts of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and
Michigan.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: The rain will end soon after midnight, and
we will forecast a clearing sky tomorrow along with cooler
temperatures; we should hold in the 40s most of the day with a cool
northerly breeze. Then, we will head down into the upper 20s by
daybreak Saturday. We will warm up nicely on Saturday, however, with a
high near 60 degrees in most locations with ample sunshine. On Sunday,
moisture will begin to return, and few showers could slip into the
state by mid to late afternoon.

MORE RAIN NEXT WEEK: We will forecast a good chance of showers Sunday
night into Monday as a warm front moves northward through Alabama.
Then, a healthy round of showers and storms is likely Tuesday
afternoon and Tuesday night in advance of a major storm system. Looks
like there will be unstable air in place by then, and strong to severe
thunderstorms could become a problem. Cooler and drier air returns to
the state by Wednesday.

DROUGHT MONITOR: Even with the good rain event back on Tuesday night,
we are still behind on rainfall this year. Birmingham's total since
January 1 is 3.31", which is about two inches (1.98") below normal.
So, even if we do receive one inch of rain tonight, it looks like we
will have a rain deficit for the month of January. Not the best way to
start the New Year for a parched state.

MAJOR LEAGUE COLD: The northern hemisphere, generally speaking, is
very cold. Coldest spot in the U.S. yesterday morning was Fort Yukon,
Alaska with 54 below zero. The low at Bottineau, North Dakota was 32
below.

OPENING NIGHT! Storm Alert 2008 kicks off tonight at 7:00 at Oak Grove
High School. See a riveting story on one of the survivors of the April
8, 1998 tornado, along with other great Alabama weather stories. We
have some really good prizes to give away, and you can meet the ABC
33/40 weather team. See you tonight at Oak Grove!

ANOTHER ROUND OF RAIN TOMORROW: It seems like storm systems are
beginning to line up for a parade across the national weather map. We
cannot complain about this because it is bringing Alabama some much
needed rain. Even though the topsoil is in good shape now, the
reservoirs and streams and ground water have a long way to go.

The widespread windstorm last night also turned out to be a good rain
producer. Virtually all sections of the state received rain. Just a
few of the heavier amounts included:

1.40 at Haleyville
1.69 Bankhead National Forest
1.18 Moulton
1.31 Hamilton

Numerous communities received well over ½ inch to almost 1 inch,
including Anniston with 0.91, Tuscaloosa 0.77 and Birmingham 0.68.

Unfortunately, high winds covered much of the state uprooting numerous
trees and tearing down power lines. This was caused by a tightly wound
barometric pressure and thunderstorms were involved. That is most
unusual for us to get that much wind when we cannot blame it on a
thunderstorm.

A QUICK TURN AROUND: Clouds will return quickly tomorrow with rain
starting by afternoon. Rain, along with scattered thunderstorms, will
be widespread Thursday night, but ending fairly early on Friday. This
should be another good rain producer. We could get anywhere from 1.50
to possibly as much as 2 inches of rain. The Storm Prediction Center
has included almost the south half of Alabama in a Slight Risk for
some severe thunderstorms tomorrow. That depends greatly on how
quickly we could ingest lots of moisture and unstable air. The new
storm system is already developing to our west, with the low crossing
Oklahoma tonight and crossing Mississippi and Alabama Thursday night.
This will quickly pull lots of moist air northward. The showers will
end early Friday followed by clearing and cooler. Saturday will be the
nicest day of the week with sunshine and a high near 60.

THE HUGE TEMPERATURE DROP: All of that strong wind brought a rapid
plunge in temperature overnight. At Hanceville in Cullman County, it
was a mild 65 yesterday afternoon, but a cold 23 this morning with
much lower wind chill. That was fairly typical across North and
Central Alabama. At Hamilton, the drop was from 65 to 18. That 18 was
the coldest in the state this morning.

THE WORLD AROUND US: I cannot quit talking about the St. Louis story
where the temperature nosedived from a record 73 yesterday afternoon
to 11 above zero this morning—a quick drop of 62 degrees. Have not
seen anything like that in a number of years. In Chicago, it fell from
48 to 2 below zero. Cold temperatures this morning included 58 below
zero at Chalkyitsik, Alaska and 54 below at Ft. Yukon. A huge part of
the USA is having real problems with winter weather. Out in Utah,
another 15 inches of snow fell at Alta in the Wasatch Range bringing
their total on the ground to 113 inches.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I am convinced that Little Miss Molly
chalks up more mileage inside our home than she does on the walking
track. This is because she tries to stay out of the way of so many
people moving around and making noise. The extra people also take up
most of her ballpark. We do not get to throw the balls all the way
across the living area as much, because of so much stuff in the way. I
am going to make special effort to play with her more. Life goes on,
busy, busy, busy......

...A Shot Of Cooler Air...

ARTICLE: Noticeably cooler air invades Alabama today in the wake of
last night's rain and wind. Even with the return of sunshine, it is
unlikely that we make it out of the 40s today. And, tonight, a light
freeze is likely as temperatures drop off with a clear sky and light
wind. Most spots will be in the 28 to 32 degree range late tonight.

ANOTHER STORM SYSTEM ON THE WAY: To the west, another vigorous storm
system will get its act together tonight, and will mean some quick
weather changes for Alabama tomorrow. The airmass will modify rapidly
during the day, making the transition from a polar airmass, to a more
tropical one by late afternoon, with strong southeast winds. Then,
tomorrow night, a healthy round of showers and thunderstorms is likely
as the main system moves into the state. We are projecting one inch of
rain from around 4:00 p.m. tomorrow until 4:00 a.m. Friday. Concerning
the risk of severe weather; the lack of really unstable air should
keep the storms in check, but based on the strength of the system, we
will maintain a slight of severe thunderstorms tomorrow night.

The best chance of severe weather should be along and south of U.S.
80, or south of a line from Demopolis to Montgomery to Opelika, where
the air will be the most unstable.
Friday will be a calmer day with a clearing sky and another shot of
cooler air; the high Friday should be in the upper 40s.

OUR WEEKEND: At this point the weather over the weekend looks very
pleasant with a high not too far from 60 on Saturday and Sunday. Some
moisture will begin to return on Sunday, but at this time it looks
like most of the showers will remain west of Alabama.

NEXT WEEK: We could be in store for another beneficial rain event next
week; a cold front will slip into Alabama Monday night and become
stationary somewhere over Central Alabama, as it will be parallel to
the upper air winds. Then, a series of waves will move along the
front, which should mean periods of rain through Tuesday, Wednesday,
and possibly Thursday.

A WINDY NIGHT: A strong pressure gradient moved through Alabama last
night, producing strong winds not related to thunderstorms. At the ABC
33/40 Skycam site atop the Daniel Building, on 20th Street in downtown
Birmingham, winds gusted to 65 mph. The peak gust atop the Tuscaloosa
County Courthouse was 53 mph. There were numerous reports of trees and
power lines blown over the northern half of Alabama. One person was
injured near Dodge City in Cullman County when part of a barn blew
onto a car, just west of I-65. At one point about 15,000 people had no
power due to the wind.

STORM ALERT 2008: Our annual severe weather awareness tour across
Alabama begins this week! Our first stop will at Oak Grove High School
Thursday at 7:00; from there will have shows in Anniston, Northport,
Lineville, and Moody. We have plenty of great prizes to give away this
year; get there early to get a good seat and meet the entire ABC 33/40
weather team!

================================================

TWO STORM SYSTEMS IN OUR IMMEDIATE FUTURE: The first system will roll
into Alabama tonight with periods of rain and a few thunderstorms.
This is a vigorous system; in fact a tornado watch was up this
afternoon from the Mississippi Delta into the southern part of
Illnois. This watch is in effect until 7:00 p.m., and includes places
like Memphis, Paducah, and Care Girardeau, MO. Strong winds continue
to develop across Alabama in advance of the system; peak wind gusts
were in the 30 to 35 mph range across much of Alabama, and a lake wind
advisory continues in effect.

Although the Storm Prediction Center has a good part of North and West
Alabama in a slight risk of severe weather tonight, we believe the
severe weather threat here is greatly limited by the lack of unstable
air. However, storms that do develop tonight will most likely contain
gusty winds as they move through. We expect average rain amounts of
around one-half inch.

The showers and storms will end late tonight, and colder and drier air
quickly moves into the state. Tomorrow will be a sunny and cool day
with temperatures remaining below 50 degrees over the northern half of
the state.

STORM NUMBER TWO: Our second storm system will arrive Thursday night.
It will be interesting to watch the airmass change across Alabama on
Thursday; we will begin the day near the freezing mark with Polar air
in place, but warm and moist air from the Gulf of Mexico will be
marching northward during the day. For now, it looks like the most
unstable air will remain over South Alabama, which will once again
limit any significant chance of severe weather over the northern
counties of Alabama. Looks like the bulk of the showers and storms
will come from about 4:00 p.m. Thursday until 4:00 a.m. Friday. The
good news is that this system looks pretty wet; most Alabama
communities can expect one inch of rain Thursday night, and one to two
inches of rain this week counting the rain that falls from both
weather systems.

BIG TIME COLD: Coldest spot in the nation this morning was
Chalkyitsik, Alaska (we will let you pronounce this one) with 57
degrees below zero. The coldest place in the continental U.S. was
Havre, Montana with 29 degrees below zero. The leading edge of this
brutally cold air was over the central part of Missouri this
afternoon, where an amazing temperature gradient was in place. At 1:00
CDT, St. Louis was reporting a balmy 65 degrees, while only about 150
miles away, Maryville, Missouri was at 9 degrees with snow falling.

STORM ALERT 2008 BEGINS THURSDAY: We hope to see you at Oak Grove High
School Thursday night for the opening night of Storm Alert 2008. We
have a special story on the 10th anniversary of the April 8, 1998 F5
tornado in Jefferson County that killed 32 people and destroyed the
old Oak Grove school campus. We begin at 7:00… come early to meet the
weather team and get a good seat!
