...A Shot Of Cooler Air...

ARTICLE: Noticeably cooler air invades Alabama today in the wake of
last night's rain and wind. Even with the return of sunshine, it is
unlikely that we make it out of the 40s today. And, tonight, a light
freeze is likely as temperatures drop off with a clear sky and light
wind. Most spots will be in the 28 to 32 degree range late tonight.

ANOTHER STORM SYSTEM ON THE WAY: To the west, another vigorous storm
system will get its act together tonight, and will mean some quick
weather changes for Alabama tomorrow. The airmass will modify rapidly
during the day, making the transition from a polar airmass, to a more
tropical one by late afternoon, with strong southeast winds. Then,
tomorrow night, a healthy round of showers and thunderstorms is likely
as the main system moves into the state. We are projecting one inch of
rain from around 4:00 p.m. tomorrow until 4:00 a.m. Friday. Concerning
the risk of severe weather; the lack of really unstable air should
keep the storms in check, but based on the strength of the system, we
will maintain a slight of severe thunderstorms tomorrow night.

The best chance of severe weather should be along and south of U.S.
80, or south of a line from Demopolis to Montgomery to Opelika, where
the air will be the most unstable.
Friday will be a calmer day with a clearing sky and another shot of
cooler air; the high Friday should be in the upper 40s.

OUR WEEKEND: At this point the weather over the weekend looks very
pleasant with a high not too far from 60 on Saturday and Sunday. Some
moisture will begin to return on Sunday, but at this time it looks
like most of the showers will remain west of Alabama.

NEXT WEEK: We could be in store for another beneficial rain event next
week; a cold front will slip into Alabama Monday night and become
stationary somewhere over Central Alabama, as it will be parallel to
the upper air winds. Then, a series of waves will move along the
front, which should mean periods of rain through Tuesday, Wednesday,
and possibly Thursday.

A WINDY NIGHT: A strong pressure gradient moved through Alabama last
night, producing strong winds not related to thunderstorms. At the ABC
33/40 Skycam site atop the Daniel Building, on 20th Street in downtown
Birmingham, winds gusted to 65 mph. The peak gust atop the Tuscaloosa
County Courthouse was 53 mph. There were numerous reports of trees and
power lines blown over the northern half of Alabama. One person was
injured near Dodge City in Cullman County when part of a barn blew
onto a car, just west of I-65. At one point about 15,000 people had no
power due to the wind.

STORM ALERT 2008: Our annual severe weather awareness tour across
Alabama begins this week! Our first stop will at Oak Grove High School
Thursday at 7:00; from there will have shows in Anniston, Northport,
Lineville, and Moody. We have plenty of great prizes to give away this
year; get there early to get a good seat and meet the entire ABC 33/40
weather team!
