GOOD AFTERNOON: It was a long night in the Weather Center last night as a long, slow moving line of strong thunderstorms edged through the area. The first signs of trouble came from the Mississippi Delta when tornadoes were reported around 10 p.m. near Shaw and Greenwood, Mississippi.

Tornado watches were issued for much of Northern, Central and West Alabama overnight and into the morning hours. Some of the storms showed distinct rotation, and although there was not severe destruction, there were definitely lots of reports of lots of wind damage. Some of the damage was quite possibly caused by tornadoes. Tree damage was reported at Romulus in Tuscaloosa County. This storm produced a few funnel cloud reports and a possible small tornado over Tuscaloosa County and turned into a bow echo as it moved into Jefferson and Shelby County. There were numerous reports of tree damage in areas around Alabaster, including trees on homes.

Power outages were reported across southern parts of the Birmingham Metro area. Winds gusted to 49 mph at Legion Field. High winds were reported in Helena and there was damage in the Amberly Woods Subdivision. Brian Peters reports the his initial assessment of the Helena damage is consistent with that of a small tornado. This same storm also caused a possible tornado that skipped around the Pelham, Columbiana and Wilsonville areas of Shelby County. The Shelby County 911 Center lost of a communications. Lots of trees were reported down over Cherokee County with some roof damage in Etowah County. Very impressive radar signatures of possible tornadoes popped up over Marengo County and over St. Clair County, but there have been no reports of tornadoes in those counties, so far.

Thankfully, there were few problems at the Talladega Speedway, where lots of people were camped for the weekend. The line “bowed out” and produced strong gusty winds as it moved south eastward, but the highest wind we observed at the track for 41 mph. The good news is that no one was injured.

OUR FORECAST: Our daytime highs were mainly recorded just after midnight, as temperatures fell into the 60s during the morning hours, and are having a hard time making forward progress in the clouds and cold air advection. Skies will clear this evening across the area, although a few lucky places might get a tiny spot of sun later this afternoon. Temperatures tonight will drop into the chilly middle 40s. Sunday promises to be a beautiful day, with lots of sunshine, but a cool northerly breeze with attempt to make you forget about the burning rays of that strong Spring sun, so don’t forget the sunscreen. Alabama will be in damp easterly flow pattern next week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1924: The ”Horrell Hill” tornado family cut paths of destruction along a 105 mile path in South Carolina. Fifty two people died in a dozen small towns. The strongest tornado in the family was an F4. Other killer tornadoes struck during the early morning hours, moved into Georgia and then into South Carolina by late morning. Sixty seven people died in all, nearly half of them in the town of Horrell Hill.

...Storms Exiting Area...

GOOD MORNING! Even as I approach the morning forecast package deadline, our severe weather situation is still unfolding. Once again, a dangerous looking event fizzled to nothing during the day, with another Moderate Risk and Public Severe Weather Outlook not materializing for areas mainly west of Alabama. That’s a good thing. But things began to heat up just before 10 p.m. and that spells a long night ahead in the Weather Office.

WHAT HAPPENED: Two days out, models were predicting a major outbreak of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. Things did not work out. Cloud cover kept instability levels lower to the west of Alabama, and a very strong capping inversion suppressed thunderstorm development until the low pressure system moved into northwestern Mississippi. Stronger forcing along the cold front to the south of the low was able to break the cap and permit storms to form. Once the storms formed, they intensified rapidly. A funnel cloud was reported over Greenwood, Mississippi just after 10 p.m., along with a well pronounced wall cloud.

TIMING: Thuderstorms will reach West Alabama around midnight, the Birmingham area just after 2 a.m. and the Talladega/Anniston areas around 3 a.m. Strong, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes will be possible.

OUR SATURDAY: The storms should be over by 4 a.m. in the Birmingham area, 6 a.m. over eastern sections. Skies should remain cloudy through much of the day, with a breezy west wind gradually shifting around to the northwest. There could be a light shower or two during day. Temperatures should reach top out in the upper 60s to near 70 in central sections. There will be a few breaks in the clouds at times, but the real clearing should begin by late afternoon. Temperatures on Saturday night will fall into the middle 40s.

RACE WEATHER: Weather looks good with blue skies and only a few clouds. Temperatures will be on the cool side, in the upper 60s, with a chilly north breeze. Don’t forget sunscreen, though!
