...Welcome To March...

February is in the books. It certainly will be one for
the books, with a record number of tornadoes in Alabama and one of the
largest outbreaks in U.S. history. It was as high as 75F in
Birmingham on the 5th, and the mercury dropped to 21F on Valentines
Day, for the coldest reading in the month. It has been as warm as 83F
in February, back in 1996. It has been as cold as -10F, back in
February 13, 1899, the coldest reading ever observed in the Magic
City. The average high was 60.8F, the average low 37.7. These
readings are about 2.5 degrees below normal. The mercury dropped to
freezing or lower on 9 mornings, which is less than the average of
11.5 times in February. 4.66 inches of rain fell during the month,
which is 0.45 inches above normal. This comes off the hees of
January, which was about an inch below normal, so we are still a
little behind for the year.

SPRINGLIKE GOOD: It has beautiful Saturday across
Central Alabama. The morning dawned cloudy and foggy, with some dense
fog in some areas, especially over North Central Alabama, where skies
cleared early after overnight rainfall. Visibilities were down to ¼
mile or less in spots. Clouds began to break by mid-morning and the
warm March sun has sent the mercury into the middle and upper 60s. A
few spots will make 70F. It will be clear and calm overnight with a
little fog toward morning. Sunday will be a textbook spring day, with
lots of sunshine, a few clouds, an increasing southeast wind and warm
readings in the 70s. That's spiring's good side.

SPRINGLIKE BAD: But spring's bad side will not be far
behind, with thunderstorms arriving on Monday. By then, a low will be
forming over the Arklatex. This low will track east northeastward,
making it to near the border of Alabama/Mississippi and Tennessee by
midnight. Storms will invade Alabama late Monday night, and for the
time being it looks like the main threat will be damaging winds from
a strong squall line. There could be isolated tornadoes, though. All
of Alabama seems to be in the threat area based on this track. The
timing (late night) is in our favor. Much colder air will flow in on
the backside of the system and it will be raw on Tuesday with strong
winds and a likely mix of light rain and snow showers. But the
morning run of the GFS is less excited about wraparound moisture and
lessens the chance of snow showers as the upper low tracks further
north. This scenario would support a greater threat of severe weather
and a lessened winter weather threat. Look for a midweek warmup,
followed by another chill down for the end of the week. We will have
to wait and see. The new GFS also takes the mid-week system off the
board, pushing it into the Gulf. Again, we will wait and see.

ON THIS DATE IN 1952: In the morning, William Eads of
England, Arkansas was admonishing his family to finish the building of
a storm cellar project that had been underway for weeks. Just after 5
PM, as the finishing touches were being put on the storm cellar, it
was put to good use by the family as an F4 tornado devastated the
town. This would be Arkansas' most deadly tornado outbreak ever as
112 people died. At least six major tornadoes occurred across the
state on this date. Hardest hit was Judsonia, Arkansas, where thirty
people died. Another twenty nine died in Cotton Plant, Arkansas.

...In Like A Lamb, But...

March is not living up to its reputation for starting off
stormy and ending in a tranquil fashion. But just wait. The lion
will roar by Monday and wild weather will be with us through much of
the week ahead. We will deal with severe weather and heavy rain,
followed by a sharp change to colder as well as a chance of snow
showers early in the week.

FOR YOUR WEEKEND: Leap Day 2008 featured a southeast
bound cold front that pushed an area of showers through Alabama
overnight. Rainfall amounts were light, but we will take anything
that we can get. Skies are clearing behind the front this morning and
northerly winds are filtering in drier air. With lots of sunshine
today, temperatures will warm into the lower and middle 60s. Tomorrow
promises to be even warmer, with highs generally reaching 70 degrees.

UH OH: Another powerful weather system will start to
affect Alabama by Monday. It will feature a powerful upper trough/
upper low. Rain and storms will break out Monday afternoon and Monday
night. It will be very windy. For severe weather, the key will be
the track of the surface low. For now it looks like the greatest
threat will be over Southeast Alabama south and east of Montgomery.
Cold air will start to spread into Alabama after midnight Tuesday.
Our temperatures will be in the 30s on Tuesday with strong winds and
the possibility of snow showers. A big snow is likely over parts of
Tennessee and Kentucky. While snow accumulations seem unlikely with
warm ground and temperatures slightly above freezing, with a big upper
level low directly over us, the dynamic cooling could overcome these
factors and produce a significant snow. It will be interesting to
watch this situation unfold.

SECOND SYSTEM: A cold front will settle down into
Alabama on Thursday. Meanwhile, low pressure may be developing over
the western Gulf of Mexico. This could set up a cold, overrunning
rain or icing even for parts of North Alabama late Thursday night into
Friday morning. It takes a special set of ingredients to come
together for a freezing rain event, but when it does, the results can
be disastrous. We will have to monitor the situation for the
possibility of something in that time frame. Colder and drier air
will spread in for the weekend.

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME NEXT WEEK: We all will have to
spring forward next weekend as our Congress induced Daylight Saving
Time starts early again. I have to admit that I like it better. How
about you?

DID YOU KNOW? This will be the earliest Easter most of
us have ever experienced. You would have to be 95 to remember the
last time Easter occurred on March 23rd. The earliest that it can
occur is March 22nd, but that has never happened.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: Thirty people died in a tornado
outbreak that stretched from Arkansas and Mississippi to Ohio and West
Virginia. Twenty three Arkansans died in the onslaught, the worst in
the Natural State since May 1968. Arkadelphia, AR was hard hit, as
was Little Rock. Ahead of the system, it was 81F at Bristol, Tennessee.

A MOSTLY SUNNY WEEKEND: A cold front was pushing SE toward Alabama
this afternoon. It was setting off a band of showers out front. Those
showers will be moving across our area late this afternoon and this
evening. There is an outside chance you will hear a peal of thunder,
but we think mostly just showers. The wind will shift around to the NW
late tonight and drop our temperature to near 40 by daybreak. It looks
like mostly sunshine for both Saturday and Sunday. The temperature
should recover to 64 tomorrow and a mild 70 on Sunday.

NOW THE ACTION PART: Another storm situation for early in the week.
Showers and thunderstorms will be moving eastward across the area
Monday and Monday night. We think most of the action will be from late
Monday afternoon until well into Monday night. This looks like another
severe weather threat. The Storm Prediction Center has placed Alabama
under a risk of severe weather for Monday. Before we can be certain,
we will have to watch the path of a low-pressure system to our west,
which will be moving toward the NE. We will be able to better define
that Sunday and Monday morning.

We do not expect much rain tonight—maybe 1/3 of an inch, but the
second system Monday and Monday night will give some areas around 1.50
inches of rain, which will further alleviate the drought situation.
Already we have seen some improvement.

Colder air will pour into the area after midnight Monday night. When
you get up Tuesday morning, temperatures will be in the mid 30s and
there could be some snow showers around the area. Those will occur
mainly Tuesday morning. We are forecasting a high of 42 on Tuesday,
but if the clouds hang tough, it could be closer to 39 or 40. That is
going to feel sharp after our Monday high of 71.

OTHER ALABAMA NOTES: One of the colder spots in the state this
morning was Muscadine, over in extreme East Alabama, with 26. There
was a big difference in temperature. Montgomery with 32 was 12 degrees
colder than Birmingham. Huntsville officially has had ½ inch of snow
so far this winter.

CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE: This is our pick city to discuss some
interesting weather today. Concord is the capitol of New Hampshire
located over the southern part of the state on the Merrimack River.
Manchester is the largest city. In Concord, an additional 10 inches of
snow is forecast for tonight and Saturday. They had 13 below zero this
morning, but how about these numbers? They have already received 102
inches of snow this season. Their average by this date is 50 inches.
Last year by this time they had only received 19 inches…elsewhere
around the world, the coldest temperature in Alaska this morning was
39 below at Beaver, Alaska and the coldest in the lower 48 was 32 at
Berlin, New Hampshire.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Daylight Saving Time does not end this
Sunday, it is next Sunday, March 9. Woe is Miss Molly and me. We are
both great fans of Standard Time year round. But, we will still have
fun together and my motto is to spend more play time with her after
Monday's rough weather. Life goes on.....

...A Few Showers Tonight...

NICE WEEKEND AHEAD: An Alberta clipper will pass north of Alabama
tonight, and will drag a weak front down this way, which bring a
chance of showers to the state. The best chance of rain will come
between 4:00 this afternoon and 2:00 a.m. tomorrow. This won't be a
big rain event; in fact, most spots should see only a quarter of an
inch of rain. The weekend does indeed look very nice; expect a good
supply of sunshine tomorrow and Sunday with the warming trend
continuing. The high tomorrow will be in the mid 60s, and most Alabama
communities should reach the 70 degree mark on Sunday.

MAJOR STORM SYSTEM EARLY NEXT WEEK: A very dynamic weather system will
impact Alabama early next week. The initial problem will come from the
possibility of strong to severe thunderstorms Monday afternoon, and
especially Monday night. Based on the projected strength of the system
and the associated wind fields, this looks like a setup for storms
with damaging straight line winds and isolated tornadoes, with the
highest probability of severe weather for areas along and south of
I-20. At the moment, it looks like the best chance of severe weather
will come from about 4:00 p.m. Monday through 12:00 midnight Monday
night.

Following the storms Monday night, Tuesday promises to be a cold and
blustery day as a cold core upper low passes over Alabama. Dynamic
cooling from aloft, and the associated instability, will mean a chance
of snow showers across North Alabama. At this point it looks like the
best chance of any accumulating snow will come over the far northeast
corner of the state, but it all depends on the track of the surface
low pressure center. We will be watching all of this very closely over
the weekend.

LATE NEXT WEEK: Another storm system will impact Alabama at the end of
next week; it looks like a chance of rain Thursday, followed by some
risk of a changeover to light snow late Thursday night or early
Friday. We won't be able to provide specifics of this system until we
get the first storm out of the way early in the week. Bottom line is
that our weather will remain very active, changeable and interesting
for at least the next 10 days.

HANGING OUT THE WASH: Coldest spot in the nation yesterday morning was
Fort Yukon, Alaska with -29. Coldest in the lower 48 was Spincich
Lake, Michigan with -23. Hottest places were Wink, Texas and Death
Valley, CA with 90.

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase a top of
the line Midland NOAA Weather Radio at any Handy TV location in this
part of Alabama for only $29.95. These receivers have the new digital
technology that allows you to choose the counties for which the alarm
sounds. ABC 33/40 Meteorologist Jason Simpson will be at the Cullman
Handy TV location this morning from 11:00 to 12:00 noon to help you
program your receiver.

SHOWERS LATER FRIDAY: It was another very cold night across Alabama
with a freeze all the way to the coast. Here are some of the coldest
temperatures:

14 Grantley (North Cleburne County)
15 DeSoto State Park
16 Muscadiine
17 Rainbow City
18 Ft. Payne, Lincoln, Concord/Hueytown, Kimberly, McCalla
19 Munford, Moody, Hamilton, Cottondale

The other lows varied upward to 30 at Mobile Regional Airport. It
will not be nearly as cold tonight. We are calling for an average low
of 34 across Central Alabama, however the dew point is still rather
low. That means that some of the colder valleys over on the east side
of the state and especially in NE Alabama will drop to the upper 20s.
A warming trend becomes more pronounced Friday and by Sunday and
Monday the old thermometer will be flirting with 70.

UPCOMING RAIN SITUATION: Some showers will arrive Friday afternoon
becoming more numerous Friday night. This does not look like a big
rain event. Most areas will get ½ inch or less. The showers should end
very early Saturday. Our main rain event, and some possible severe
weather, will come later Monday, Monday night and extending into
Tuesday morning. Some parts of the state will get between 1.50 and
2.00 inches of rain. There is also going to be a risk of some severe
thunderstorms with that event. That is a bit down the road, so we can
zoom in on that with more accuracy as it gets closer. It appears that
our very active February will continue that way into March.

SOME GOOD NEWS FOR A CHANGE: Birmingham is no longer in the
Exceptional Drought category (D4). Only 15% of Alabama is now in an
Exceptional Drought. That extends roughly from Cullman, Blount, Etowah
and Cherokee Counties northward. One week ago, 35% of the state was in
the Exceptional Drought. One month ago it was 42% and as recent as
October 23, 2007, 64% was exceptional. That is progress, but we must
remember that the drought is a long way from being over.

THE WORLD AROUND US: The Great Smoky Mountains and the higher
terrain of NE Tennessee and Western North Carolina continues to be a
winter wonderland. More snow fell in the last 24 hours. In Great Smoky
Mountain National Park a very impressive 22 inches of snow was on the
ground on Mt. LeConte this morning with a temperature of 1 below zero.
No worry about mosquitoes. 12 inches was on the ground at Newfound Gap
with a temperature of 6 above. Gatlinburg still had 5 inches on the
ground. In the NE corner of Tennessee, there was 7 inches at Mountain
City, 9 to 11 inches in the Trade community and 12 inches on Stone
Mountain.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: One of the most pleasurable wake up
times with Molly this morning that I have ever seen. When she was
younger, she would wake up and immediately go full speed ahead. Now
she stretches and yawns for 3 or 4 minutes. Even then she might curl
up and go back to sleep. This morning I was walking through the master
bedroom just as she opened her eyes. Even though she was barely awake,
she turned upside down saying she needed a belly rub. She let out a
slow moan and groan that lasted at least 3 minutes. She captures me
with that. Life goes on......

...A Warming Trend Begins...

A NICE WARM-UP: After a sub-freezing start, a warming trend begins
across Alabama this afternoon as we reach the mid 50s. The air will be
very dry, so we expect a good supply of sunshine through scattered
clouds. The warming trend continues tomorrow as we head toward the 60
degree mark by mid-afternoon.

Clouds will increase tomorrow in advance of a weak cold front; that
front should bring a round of showers, and possibly a thunderstorm,
late in the day tomorrow and tomorrow night. Looks like the best
chance of showers will come from about 4:00 p.m. until 3:00 a.m., and
rain amounts should average around one-quarter of an inch. No severe
weather is expected this time with the main dynamics passing well to
the north of Alabama, and very limited instability.

NICE WEEKEND AHEAD: The weekend looks dry and mild, with partly to
mostly sunny weather Saturday and Sunday and highs in the 60s. Some
parts of West Alabama might touch the 70 degree mark Sunday afternoon
as the warm-up continues.

WILD WEATHER EARLY NEXT WEEK? The next big weather event for Alabama
comes early next week. A strong, phased upper air trough will support
a cold front that is expected to move through here Monday night. This
should bring a round of strong to severe thunderstorms Monday night,
followed by a sharp change to colder weather on Tuesday. Some computer
model runs have shown a deep, cold core upper low developing over
Alabama and Georgia on Tuesday; if this happens a strong surface low
will develop to the east of Alabama, and that feature in combination
with dynamic cooling from the cold core upper low could bring some
snow to parts of the Deep South. Way too early to be really specific
here, but the situation sure needs to be watched closely.

LOOKING BACK AT TUESDAY MORNING: In the midst of a widespread area of
damaging straight line winds, the National Weather Service in
Birmingham has identified three small tornado tracks; they are in
Leeds, Pell City, and the Highland Lakes community in the northern
part of Shelby County. The entire event is classified as a "derecho",
which is defined as a widespread and long-lived, violent convectively
induced windstorm that is associated with a fast-moving band of severe
thunderstorms usually taking the form of a bow echo. One person was
killed in Leeds due to a tree falling onto a mobile home.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Grand Beach, Michigan was buried with 18.5
inches of snow yesterday. As of yesterday, there was a whopping 17
inches of snow on the ground in East Tennessee atop Mt. LeConte and 12
inches on Newfound Gap. There was 5 inches on the ground at the
national part headquarters near Gatlinburg (Sugarland Center). Tampa
Bay, Florida was soaked with 1.41" of rain. The coldest spot in the
nation was Deadhorse, Alaska with 37 degrees below zero.

...A Breezy, Cold Wednesday...

ANOTHER FREEZE TONIGHT: We do not know what the final damage
assessment will be from Tuesday's predawn violent storms, but it has
got to be very high. Often, when you have a tornado, unless it is a
major outbreak, the damage is confined to several narrow paths,
although some may be several miles long. The damage yesterday occurred
in many different communities and many different counties. It appears
that the Leeds/Pell City area was among the hardest hit. The NWS had a
survey team out and about yesterday and we are anxious to see their
final report. Now our attention turns from storms to cold weather. Last
evening snow flurries were reported over about the north third of the
state as brisk NW winds made people reach for heavy coats. You will
need those coats today if you are out and about. Brisk NW winds will
continue, but will diminish late today and tonight. High temperatures
today should be in the 40s, barely getting above 40 in the Tennessee
Valley. We do not foresee any strong storms again until about Monday
and Monday night. It is too early to ascertain if any of those will be
strong to severe.

A LESSON FROM YESTERDAY: Unless the NWS finds evidence of tornadic
storms, it appears that almost all of the damage yesterday was from
severe thunderstorms. It behooves us to pay attention when a Severe
Thunderstorm Warning is issued. There have been a number of occasions
in weather history when severe thunderstorms can cause as much damage
as a tornado. On February 16, 2001, I was doing continuous radio
coverage that afternoon when a vicious line of thunderstorms moved
very rapidly from Mississippi into Alabama. When the line got to about
40 miles west of Birmingham, it bulged outward (we call that a bow
echo). That is always a danger signal. That line of storms uprooted
hundreds and hundreds of trees across the area and a wind gust of 99
mph was clocked on the Legion Field press box where ABC 33/40 had some
wind sensors installed at the time.

THE WORLD AROUND US: Finally, some cool air reached South Texas. The
warmest in the country yesterday came from South Florida instead where
it was 89 in Melbourne. The previous day we had our first 100 of the
year at Rio GrandeVillage in South Texas. The threat of severe weather
will be almost gone today, but there is a slight risk over parts of
South Florida. After the storms moved through Alabama, there were
numerous reports yesterday of hail and high winds over South Georgia
and the northern 1/3 of Florida.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little 9-pound pal, Miss Molly, sure
was glad to see all the storms get out of here yesterday morning. She
took that opportunity to sack out and sleep most of the day. She has
developed a habit of seizing the last chair that someone sat in. She
can be sound asleep in the living area and, if one of us gets up and
leaves, she will immediately change chairs because she thinks it is
warmer or more comfortable. I am going to catch up playtime with her
today for sure. Life goes on.

COLDER AIR SWEEPING IN: It was a wild night across Alabama or at
least part of the night. The line of mean thunderstorms entered NW
Alabama after midnight and swept pretty much across the entire state
exiting the SE during mid-morning.

I do not think anyone in the whole wide world thought the storms
would be as mean as they were. While the damage is not catastrophic by
any account, it is scattered over many counties and in a few places
the damage is significant. In downtown Leeds, about 3:45 a.m., windows
were blown out and roofs were torn off businesses. Trees were also
down and homes damaged in some residential areas. At this point, the
main tragedy of the night occurred. A 71-year-old lady was killed in
her mobile home when it was destroyed.

Further east in Calhoun County, numerous trees and power lines were
torn down. Pretty much the same story in Randolph and Cleburne
Counties. That story could be repeated many times over in many parts
of the state.

The Anniston Star reported that Saks High School lost 75% of its
roof. A wind gust to 65 mph was recorded at Mumford in Talladega
County and 70 mph at Weaver near Anniston.

Rain was very heavy with these storms and, since the storms were
moving very rapidly, the rain had to be intense to give us these
amounts: 1.00 in Vernon and Hokes Bluff, 1.20 Columbiana, 0.82 at
Oneonta, 0.62 Jasper, 0.80 Steele, 0.79 Hamilton.

WE ALMOST DID IT: The 0.83 rain at Birmingham Airport during the
night brought the total for the year to 8.95 inches and that is a
deficit of only 0.20. Possibly with the showers expected Friday night,
we can finally get back to normal, at least for this year.

STORM ALERT 2008: This is your last chance and weather should
definitely be on your mind after last night. The program starts at
7:00 tonight at Bethel Baptist Church in Moody. It is easy to find.
The doors open at 5:00, so try to get there early and you might get a
free T-shirt. There will also be some prizes during the presentation.
You can meet all of the ABC 33/40 weather characters.

THE WORLD AROUND US: Yesterday afternoon the old thermometer
overheated and reached 100 in Rio Grande Village in South Texas…this
is still winter…sometimes in Central Alabama, we do not even reach 100
all summer…even in North Texas it was 90 at Ft. Worth…lowest in the
lower 48 this morning was an even zero at Stanley, Idaho…the coldest
in Alaska was 38 below at good old Deadhorse where they had a wind
chill of 52 below.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly simply vanished. I
was up all night working and had very little time to even speak to
her. She went to bed at the usual time, but at some point the thunder
made her leave. She was found in the corner of the house in the big
bathroom as far back as she could get. Later in the night around 5:00
a.m. I went to grab a cup of coffee, did not see Molly. I searched the
entire house in every nook and cranny and could not find her. She must
have an ultra secret hiding place. When the weather calmed down, she
took over my recliner and it looked like she had been poured into the
back of it. She became invisible. Life goes on......

...Storms Move Out; Turning Much Colder...

STORM ALERT 2008 TONIGHT: Don't forget, your last chance to see our
annual severe weather awareness tour across Alabama, Storm Alert 2008,
is tonight at Bethel Baptist Church on U.S. Highway 411 in Moody in
St. Clair County. The doors open at 5:00, and the show begins at 7:00.
The building at Bethel Baptist was destroyed by a tornado April 8,
1998… that is one of the storms that we are featuring this year. Bring
the whole family… we hope to see you there.

STORMY MORNING: A band of showers and strong thunderstorms will be
moving through Alabama this morning; the storms will have the
potential to produce gusty winds and possibly some small hail, but
they should weaken as they move to the east into a more stable
airmass. Rainfall amounts of one-quarter to one-half inch are likely
before the rain exits the state by midday.

COLD AIR SHOT: As the storms move out of Alabama this morning, much
colder air moves in. We will begin the day with temperatures in the
low to mid 50s at daybreak, but look for readings to fall into the 40s
by mid-morning with a brisk northwest wind developing. That will make
for a rather raw afternoon, with clouds staying in place. As the cold
air gets deeper tonight, and an upper trough passes over the state, we
will mention the chance of a few snow flurries for areas along and
north of I-20. Then, by daybreak tomorrow, we should be in the upper
20s. Despite the return of sunshine tomorrow, we are forecasting a
high only in the mid 40s. Another freeze is likely tomorrow night, but
a warming trend begins on Thursday afternoon.

WEEKEND PEEK: A cold front is forecast to move through Alabama Friday
night, and that should bring another round of showers and
thunderstorms. At this time, it looks like the best chance of showers
and storms will come from about 6:00 p.m. Friday through 6:00 a.m.
Saturday. Then, during the day Saturday, the sky will clear with a
high in the low 60s. The weather on Sunday looks dry and pleasant,
with a partly to mostly sunny sky and a high in the upper 60s. A
significant rain event is expected again by Monday of next week.

HEATING UP: Parts of Texas flirted with triple digit heat yesterday…
hottest spots were Cotulla and Del Rio, TX with 99 degrees. The high
at San Antonio was 92, while Dallas/Fort Worth reported a high of 88.
Colder air will invade the Lone Star State today; the expected high in
Dallas today is only 57.

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase a top of
the line Midland NOAA Weather Radio at any Handy TV location in this
part of Alabama for only $29.95. These receivers have the new digital
technology that allows you to choose the counties for which the alarm
sounds. Every Alabama home, business, and church needs one!
