...A Breezy, Cold Wednesday...

ANOTHER FREEZE TONIGHT: We do not know what the final damage
assessment will be from Tuesday's predawn violent storms, but it has
got to be very high. Often, when you have a tornado, unless it is a
major outbreak, the damage is confined to several narrow paths,
although some may be several miles long. The damage yesterday occurred
in many different communities and many different counties. It appears
that the Leeds/Pell City area was among the hardest hit. The NWS had a
survey team out and about yesterday and we are anxious to see their
final report. Now our attention turns from storms to cold weather. Last
evening snow flurries were reported over about the north third of the
state as brisk NW winds made people reach for heavy coats. You will
need those coats today if you are out and about. Brisk NW winds will
continue, but will diminish late today and tonight. High temperatures
today should be in the 40s, barely getting above 40 in the Tennessee
Valley. We do not foresee any strong storms again until about Monday
and Monday night. It is too early to ascertain if any of those will be
strong to severe.

A LESSON FROM YESTERDAY: Unless the NWS finds evidence of tornadic
storms, it appears that almost all of the damage yesterday was from
severe thunderstorms. It behooves us to pay attention when a Severe
Thunderstorm Warning is issued. There have been a number of occasions
in weather history when severe thunderstorms can cause as much damage
as a tornado. On February 16, 2001, I was doing continuous radio
coverage that afternoon when a vicious line of thunderstorms moved
very rapidly from Mississippi into Alabama. When the line got to about
40 miles west of Birmingham, it bulged outward (we call that a bow
echo). That is always a danger signal. That line of storms uprooted
hundreds and hundreds of trees across the area and a wind gust of 99
mph was clocked on the Legion Field press box where ABC 33/40 had some
wind sensors installed at the time.

THE WORLD AROUND US: Finally, some cool air reached South Texas. The
warmest in the country yesterday came from South Florida instead where
it was 89 in Melbourne. The previous day we had our first 100 of the
year at Rio GrandeVillage in South Texas. The threat of severe weather
will be almost gone today, but there is a slight risk over parts of
South Florida. After the storms moved through Alabama, there were
numerous reports yesterday of hail and high winds over South Georgia
and the northern 1/3 of Florida.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little 9-pound pal, Miss Molly, sure
was glad to see all the storms get out of here yesterday morning. She
took that opportunity to sack out and sleep most of the day. She has
developed a habit of seizing the last chair that someone sat in. She
can be sound asleep in the living area and, if one of us gets up and
leaves, she will immediately change chairs because she thinks it is
warmer or more comfortable. I am going to catch up playtime with her
today for sure. Life goes on.
