...Decent Weather Ahead...

A MODERATING TREND: We sure have had an interesting winter. (Translation: a cold one with a surprising amount of snow.)

Now we expect better weather. We hope the projections over the next several days will not make anyone angry. Indeed, we should be smiling from ear to ear. Mind you, it is not going to be springlike, but afternoon temperatures will show a milder trend and even shooting for mostly 60 over the weekend. It will be cold again tonight with lows in the middle 20s. It has been below freezing more nights than not this entire winter. Low temperatures this morning were in the mid and upper 20s.

Pesky snow showers have left us, at least for a while. Indeed, we look for mostly sunshine Thursday and Friday. Clouds will increase on Saturday and we may have a few showers late in the day.

OUR BETTER CHANCE OF RAIN: Our chance of showers will increase some on Sunday, but we believe our better chance will be on Monday. Computerized guidance on the amount of rain points to over ½ inch during that time period across Central Alabama.

GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS: They sure have had an interesting winter. Atop Mt. LeConte this morning, the low was zero and they still have 36 inches of snow on the ground. Gatlinburg is expecting a low in the teens tonight and tomorrow night with highs mostly in the 30s. They will have scattered snow showers tonight and Thursday.

DID YOU KNOW...that Yuma, Arizona is known as the sunniest city in the United States? That city on the Arizona/California border gets an average of 4,000 hours of sunshine each year. That is not for me—I prefer looking at clouds. Other cities in the top 5 include Phoenix, Las Vegas and El Paso.

STORM ALERT 2010: Be sure and show up in Moundville Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. for the next edition. You might want to get there early because attendance has been high this year. You will see Ashley, Jason and James presenting some very interesting weather stories about Alabama, but you will also get great information on how to keep your family safe during periods of severe weather and winter snowstorms. The program ends at 8:15, since it is a school night, but toward the end of the program they give away quite a few prizes.

WRAP UP: These few extra notes from around North America...it was 86 yesterday in Riverside and Santa Ana, California and 16 below zero at Aberdeen, South Dakota this morning. That was 5 degrees colder than the coldest in Alaska--that was 11 below at Selawik. Valdez, over on the west side of our biggest state, has 49 inches of snow on the ground. The National Snow Survey this morning showed 54% of the lower 48 with a snow cover compared to 63% about a week or so ago.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The personality of Little Miss Molly continues to evolve. She has discovered more and more ways to boss me around. She also insists on which way we will go on the walking track the minute we walk out the door. Our long morning walk has to be on the north track where she hopes to see Dino and Bo—her two little boyfriends. Almost every morning we see Dino with his nose pressed against the lower windowpane in his backdoor watching our every move. Sometimes he jumps up and down and barks wanting to get out and play with Molly. Molly has decided she only wants to walk with me because she knows she can boss me around more and have a longer trip. Life goes on. I enjoy it.

...Gradual Warming Trend Ahead...

SLOW WARM-UP: Don't look for a tropical heat wave around here anytime soon, but temperatures will be trending upward during the latter half of the week. We expect a high in the mid 40s today, close to 50 tomorrow, followed by mid 50s on Friday. The air will be very dry, and we expect a decent supply of sunshine on a daily basis through scattered clouds.

WHAT ABOUT THE WEEKEND: A fast moving impulse will bring some risk of showers to Alabama late Friday night or Saturday, but moisture will be very limited, and dynamics unimpressive, so for now we believe the showers will be widely separated. Sunday looks mostly dry with a partly sunny sky. Highs over the weekend should be in the 55 to 59 degree range; parts of West Alabama could touch the 60 degree mark for the first time this month.

We will mention a chance of showers early next week on Monday, but we should note that a fast zonal flow is setting up, and with inconsistent computer model output, the forecast confidence is somewhat low at this time.

ROAMING: 35 inches was the snow depth on Mt. LeConte in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park yesterday morning. Their low temperature was 2 below zero. There was 4 inches of snow at Cades Cove. In North Carolina, there was 20 inches of snow at Beech Mountain with a low of 3 above zero. We do not have a report from Grandfather Mountain or Mount Mitchell.

56% of the lower 48 states had a snow cover yesterday morning based on the daily NWS Snow Survey. That compares to 41% one month ago today. As recent as last week, there was 63% coverage. The average depth of the snow cover is 8 inches. That is the number you would get if you were to average hundreds and hundreds of individual reports.

ON THIS DATE IN 1926: Huge avalanche roars through the Utah town of Bingham. A total of 40 people were killed and 75 buried by the mass of snow and debris.

STORM ALERT 2010 COMES TO HALE COUNTY TOMORROW NIGHT: Our annual severe weather rolls along; our next stop will be tomorrow night at Hale County High School in Moundville. You can meet the ABC 33/40 Weather team, see some amazing Alabama weather stories, learn how to keep your family safe this tornado season, and win some cool stuff. The show begins at 7:00; be sure and get there early to get a good seat. Hale County hometown hero J.B. Elliott will be making an appearance; J.B. grew up in "downtown Havana Junction", which is about 7 miles south of Moundville.

...Stubborn Winter...

HURRY UP JULY: Mind you, I did not say that, but I have had at least three people say that to me this week. July has to be one of my least favorite months of the year. I am a big fan of autumn, followed by winter, followed by autumn and followed by winter. Enough of that. It is totally unimportant. Now I will get down to the business at hand.

We had some more snow flurries across NE Alabama this morning. We sort of think of those as illegal trespassers, but actually they were forecast. They were not nearly as prominent and widespread as the snow flurries and snow showers that started yesterday afternoon and stubbornly went all the way down into Central Alabama giving us another white landscape. Have you ever seen this many snow events in a row? It almost seems like we have traded places with Buffalo.

Not really and Alabama weather will be improving over the next several days. It was biting cold all day today and we expect another widespread freeze tonight. We are calling for an average low of 26 across Central Alabama. If those clouds break up and move away, somebody in the NE Alabama valleys will register a low of around 18. It was 17 this morning in Cullman and 18 in Pinson. Much of North and Central Alabama were close to 20.

OUR NEXT PRECIPITATION: We look for a chance for some showers on Saturday, maybe a slightly better chance Saturday night, but we believe our better chance of getting rain will be late Sunday and Sunday night. We could even see a few thunderstorms in the blend. Our daytime temperatures will moderate to about 51 Thursday and in the mid to upper 50s Friday and Saturday. We may even touch the 60-degree mark by Sunday.

STORM ALERT 2010: The next chapter airs at 7:00 p.m. Thursday night in West/Central Alabama at Hale County High School in Moundville. That town is very famous for the Indian mounds. The program starts at 7:00 and they try to get you out at 8:15 since it is a school night. Join Ashley, Jason and James for some amazing Alabama weather stories and useful information on how to protect your family during weather threats. You might get there early, because the attendance has been very large. You might even win a prize at the end. They give out a number of those.

THE GREAT NORTH AMERICAN LANDSCAPE: Still no bitter cold build up in the Yukon Territory of NW Canada. In fact, temperatures were above zero in that area this morning. The morning Snow Survey showed 56% of the lower 48 states had a snow cover this morning. Last week, there was 63% coverage. 288 inches was the deepest snow cover this morning at Alpine Meadows, California in the Sierra-Nevada Mountains at an elevation of 6,900 feet.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sometimes I feel like a semi-prisoner because Little Miss Molly has gotten such a hold on me she can dictate my schedule. I let her do that because I love her that much. She has a knack of wanting to go on a long walk right in the middle of my weather duty deadline. She will not take no for an answer. If I do not respond right away, she has developed a new tool where she backs off about 3 or 4 feet and lunges at me bouncing off of my leg with a sound that is half bark and half growl. Then she backs off and glares at me. On our walk this morning, Little Dino, who Molly hopes to marry when they get old enough, was having a fit to get out his back door and chase us down. Life goes on.

...Cold Today; Warmer Later This Week...

CHILL STAYS IN THE AIR: Cold weather headlines our forecast again today… we will struggle to reach the 40 degree mark with a chilly northwest wind and a mix of sun and clouds. There could be just enough moisture left over for a few scattered snow flurries, but most communities will be dry today. Look for another significant freeze tonight with a low down in the low 20s; some of the colder spots across North and Central Alabama could see the upper teens by daybreak tomorrow.

WARMER DAYS: We are projecting a nice day to day warming trend for the rest of the week, along with a pretty decent amount of sunshine each day. Look for a high in the mid 40s tomorrow, low 50s Thursday, and mid to upper 50s Friday. We should note that the average high for Birmingham for this time of the year is 59 degrees; the last time it was that warm was back on January 28 when the high in Birmingham was 62.

WEEKEND PEEK: A disturbance will bring a chance of light rain to Alabama as we begin the weekend. For now it looks like the best chance of rain will come from about 12:00 midnight Friday through 12:00 noon Saturday. This is not expected to be a major rain producer with rain totals under 1/2 inch. Sunday for now looks dry with a partly sunny sky. The high both Saturday and Sunday should be in the 50s. Then, another chance of rain shows up by Monday of next week.

SNOW DAYS: Most of Alabama had accumulating snow last Friday, and some parts of the state saw it again yesterday. Parts of North Alabama had 1/2 to 1 inch during the pre-dawn hours, while another 1/2 inch fell later in the day. There were many major accidents in the Birmingham metro area yesterday morning due to black ice.

ALMOST THAT TIME OF THE YEAR: Governor Bob Riley has proclaimed February 22-26, 2010, as Severe Weather Awareness Week in Alabama. The National Weather Service, Alabama Emergency Management Agency, and other supporting organizations, ask your help in providing the public with information about severe weather safety. Advance planning and increased awareness will help residents of Alabama survive these deadly storms.

STORM ALERT 2010 COMING TO HALE COUNTY THIS WEEK: Our annual severe weather rolls along; our next stop will be on Thursday at Hale County High School in Moundville. You can meet the ABC 33/40 Weather team, see some amazing Alabama weather stories, learn how to keep your family safe this tornado season, and win some cool stuff. The show begins at 7:00; be sure and get there early to get a good seat. This will be our first Storm Alert show in Hale County; we expect a great crowd.

...Invasion From The North...

CLIPPED BY A CLIPPER: They call them the Alberta Clipper. A TV meteorologist somewhere in the Midwest coined that term about 30 years ago and it stuck. It simply means a rapidly moving cold front and mass of cold air that wastes no time going from Southern Canada going all the way into the South. When we were on the midnight shift at the NWS back in the 60s, we came up with better names. One that I remember was the Bismarck Blast.

We had the Clipper to deal with over the last couple of days and especially Sunday and Sunday night. The cold air moved quickly from Arkansas and Missouri across Alabama last night. There was one problem: the colder temperatures waited too long to get here until after the rain had moved on ahead, so there was not much snow. There was at least a dusting over the northern part of the state overnight, more so in the extreme north, where some places got over an inch.

We are not completely through with the Clipper. The low-pressure area aloft was over Illinois this afternoon. The overall circulation is still out of the NW. A broad band of clouds this afternoon was moving southeast and will be over North and Central Alabama much of tonight. Even as far south as Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Anniston, it means we could get some evening snow flurries. Across the Tennessee Valley of North Alabama, it may be snow showers, which could be heavy enough to leave some accumulations.

THE MUCH DREADED BLACK ICE: For the second time in three days, we had worlds of trouble with black ice. Late last Friday there were numerous accidents. Early this morning—ditto. There was just enough rain and snow overnight to remain on the highways this morning. It got below freezing before it had time to dry off and numerous accidents were reported in the greater Birmingham area and much of North Alabama.

THE REST OF THE WEEK: You will need some warm clothing, at least through Thursday. Lows at night will range from 20 to 25 with most afternoons in the 40s. We look for generally dry weather, at least through Friday.

STORM ALERT 2010: The program for this week is Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at Hale County High School in Moundville. The program starts at 7:00 and is over by 8:15. The attendance has been very high this year, so it is advisable to get there early. James, Jason and Ashley will present some very interesting stories. They even give away some prizes. Outside chance I will be there since it is my home area, but not sure.

ROAMING: It looks like the Canadian government has exported most of their arctic air sending it our way. This morning it was a very mild 28 above zero at Whitehorse in the Yukon and 23 at Mayo. The coldest in all of Alaska was only 16 below at Anatuvuk Pass, Alaska, which was warmer than the minus 25 at Jordan, Montana. The morning snow survey shows 60% of the lower 48 with a snow cover.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: In the last several years, while writing about Little Miss Molly, I have received numerous e-mails from families who have just lost a pet. I want to get permission from the family in Leeds who just lost a long-time great dog named Gus. They had him 14 years. I will try to do that tomorrow. It always hurts to hear those stories, but I do not know of anyone on the planet that is more sympathetic to animals that get sick or killed. We also have a great friend on the Warrior River, west of Hueytown, going through the agony of a seriously ill little dog named Maxwell. Little Miss Molly shows no signs of slowing down. She now has 4 little dogs on her walking track that she looks for every time, plus 3 CRs (Community Rabbits) and 2 CCs (Community Cats). Sometimes it takes her forever to go to the bathroom. It was a busy Sunday for Molly with 3 grandkids and 3 great grandkids here much of the day. She spent most of the day trying to stay out of the way and she could not take a nap, but life goes on.

...Miserable Monday...

Presidents' Day 2010 will not be remembered for fine weather in Alabama. Behind last night's strong cold front, cold air is flowing into the state on brisk northwesterly winds. That cold air advection will hold temperatures in the lower 30s today. Skies will be cloudy most of the day, and there could even be a few snow flurries at times. There will also be some road problems across the area since temperatures fell so quickly below freezing right after the rain.

DISAPPOINTED SNOW FANS: Since Friday's snow event, we have been keeping an eye on the Clipper system that brought the rain and snow overnight last night. During the day, there were increasing signs that it was turning wetter than we earlier thought. With much colder air moving in with a strong cold front and upper level system, the thought was that rain would changeover to snow. Since the system looked like it would be stronger and wetter, winter weather advisories were upgraded to winter storm warnings. Unfortunately for snow fans, the moisture outran the cold air.. This limited the snow to a quick hit during the overnight hours over Central sections. Some heavy snow was reported during the overnight hours in the Northwest corner of the state.

SHOULDA, WOULDA, COULDA: If it had snowed one inch at Birmingham, it would have been the first time since 1945 that Birmingham had experienced two one inch or greater snows within five days of each other.

REST OF THE WEEK: Skies will clear tonight and temperatures will drop quickly into the lower 20s. Tuesday will be a partly cloudy but chilly day with highs struggling to get out of the 30s. Wednesday won't be much better, with partly cloudy skies continuing and highs only in the middle 40s. Temperatures will start to moderate a bit on Thursday, rising into the lower 50s. That is still well below normal, though. Rain will return Friday night into Saturday.

A MAVERICK WAVE: The Maverick's Big Wave contest is a surfing competition that is held in the tiny California coastal town of Half Moon Bay when wave conditions are really big. Weather forecasts for Saturday showed they were going to be big, and organizers scurried to pull the event together. Thousands of spectators crowded the jetties and cliffs above the ocean as 50 foot waves broke just offshore. A fun afternoon turned serious when a series of large waves struck the shore. Thirteen people were injured.

WEATHERBRAINS: Tonight's show will be a fun one, with old friend and Super WeatherBrain Dr. Keith Blackwell talking all things tropical. Tara Golden from the NWS will join the crew and we will check in with the Armchair Angler, Bo Crawford to see what weather conditions are best for catching fish. Listen to the show for free at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. You can also follow us on Twitter @wxhistorian.

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: One snowboarder died and others narrowly escaped injury after being caught in a massive avalanche on Mount Baker in northwestern Washington. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter. I am @ wxhistorian.

...Accumulating Snow Tonight...

Happy Valentine's Day! It might turn out to be one to remember for snow lovers across North and Central Alabama. Not a major event by any standard, but 1-2 inches of snow with the chance for higher amounts over Northeast Alabama is still a rare occurrence.

RAIN CHANGING TO SNOW: A vigorous low pressure system is located over southeastern Missouri early this afternoon. This low is being supported by a strong upper level system that will be moving eastward, pushing the surface low along. As this system moves east, a cold front will push into the Southeast. With upper level winds that are parallel to the front, much of the precipitation will come behind the frontal passage. That means that colder air will be spreading into the area while precipitation is occurring. Rain will begin this evening across North and Central Alabama, but will change over to snow for a period, likely during the late evening over Northwest Alabama, just after midnight in the I-65 corridor and a little later in the east. It should snow for 2-3 hours on average, and areas north of I-20 will generally get one to two inches. Areas northeast of Birmingham could get more. Areas south of I-20 north of a line from Sumter to Lee County could see a dusting to a little more than an inch. Monday will be miserable, with cloudy skies, a biting northwest wind and temperatures hovering right around freezing. There could also be a few snow showers. Areas that see accumulating snows will likely experience travel problems.

REST OF THE WEEK: Drier, but chilly weather will continue for Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures will moderate a little on Thursday ahead of our next storm system, that will bring a chance of rain by late Friday night into Saturday.

BASSMASTERS RETURNS TO BIRMINGHAM: The waters at Lay Lake open to Bassmaster Classic contestants for three days beginning Friday. Did you know that Birmingham was voted "America's Bass Capital" by readers of Bassmaster magazine? The Magic City will be hosting the prestigious event for the seventh time since 1996. Highlights of the tournament are the daily weigh-ins at the BJCC when the 51 anglers present their catches of the day. Weather won't be a factor at the weigh-ins, but could affect the anglers.

Friday looks like it will feature partly cloudy skies, light SE winds and highs in the 50s. Rain will be likely Saturday with temperatures in the 50s, falling during the afternoon. Sunday should be windy and cold with snow flurries. Bo Crawford, creator of the Armchair Angler blog and podcast will be along to talk about what kind of weather makes the fish really bite. Subscribe to the show on iTunes, or try it out at www.WeatherBrains.com. Always free and always fun!

ON THIS DATE IN 1895: The Gulf Coast recorded big time snows as a coastal low brought heavy snow from Texas to Alabama. 24 inches at Rayne, LA is the state's all time record. 22" in Lake Charles. 15.4" in Galveston. 8.5" fell in New Orleans and 6.2" in Biloxi. Mobile set its all time record snow with 6". Follow my daily weather history tweets on Twitter @ wxhistorian.

...Happy Valentine's Day!...

Snow may be back for a return engagement across parts of Alabama on this Presidents' Day weekend. A fast moving low pressure system that we call an "Alberta Clipper" will bring precipitation to the area tonight and early Monday. The precipitation will start out as rain across Central Alabama, but should turn to snow during the evening. It should continue long enough to produce one to two inches of snow across areas north of a line from Aliceville to Calera to Roanoke. Two to four inches of snow could fall across the Tennessee Valley. The snow could cause travel problems Monday morning. On a good note, many schools and organizations are closed for the holiday. But many aren't, including some making up for a busted snow day in early January.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday will be cloudy and miserable, with cold temperatures in the 30s, a few flurries, and a biting northwest wind. Expect lows in the lower 20s Monday night. Tuesday and Wednesday won't be much better, with highs struggling to reach 40 degrees despite a good supply of sunshine. Temperatures will moderate a bit by Thursday and Friday. Another storm system will bring rain back to Alabama late Friday night and Saturday.

CYCLONE RENE PASSES AMERICAN SAMOA: Severe Tropical Cyclone Rene passed within about 100 miles of American Samoa on Saturday morning, with top winds of 115 mph. Sustained gale force winds were reported on the island (which is in the South Pacific about 800 miles northeast of Fuji and a couple of thousand miles northeast of New Zealand.) Winds gusted to full tropical cyclone force overnight. The airport at Pago Pago was closed.

WEATHERBRAINS: Dr. Keith Blackwell is one of the leading tropical experts in the world. The Alabama native is a professor of meteorology at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. Keep up with the latest news about the show on Twitter @weatherbrains. Subscribe on iTunes or listen at www.WeatherBrains.com.

WILD RIDE: World champion paraglider Ewa Wisnierska survived despite impossible odds when she was sucked into a huge thunderstorm over New South Wales, Australia on this date in 2007. The massive storm carried her higher than Mount Everest, to an altitude of over 32,000 feet. She suffered being pounded by hailstones the size of oranges, being encased in ice at temperatures of -40F, and lightning arcing all around her. Doctors said that the fact she went unconscious for an hour due to oxygen deprivation may have saved her, allowing her vital systems to slow down. She came to at around 22,000 feet, and was able to gradually descend. The 35 year old woman suffered severe frostbite, blistering and bruises from the hailstones, but otherwise she was fine. The chances of her survival in such a situation were rated at almost nil. The previous record height measured for a paraglider was 24,000 feet. A member of the Chinese paragliding team was not so lucky the same day. He was killed by lightning from the same storm. His body was found an amazing 47 miles from his takeoff point.
