...Stubborn Winter...

HURRY UP JULY: Mind you, I did not say that, but I have had at least three people say that to me this week. July has to be one of my least favorite months of the year. I am a big fan of autumn, followed by winter, followed by autumn and followed by winter. Enough of that. It is totally unimportant. Now I will get down to the business at hand.

We had some more snow flurries across NE Alabama this morning. We sort of think of those as illegal trespassers, but actually they were forecast. They were not nearly as prominent and widespread as the snow flurries and snow showers that started yesterday afternoon and stubbornly went all the way down into Central Alabama giving us another white landscape. Have you ever seen this many snow events in a row? It almost seems like we have traded places with Buffalo.

Not really and Alabama weather will be improving over the next several days. It was biting cold all day today and we expect another widespread freeze tonight. We are calling for an average low of 26 across Central Alabama. If those clouds break up and move away, somebody in the NE Alabama valleys will register a low of around 18. It was 17 this morning in Cullman and 18 in Pinson. Much of North and Central Alabama were close to 20.

OUR NEXT PRECIPITATION: We look for a chance for some showers on Saturday, maybe a slightly better chance Saturday night, but we believe our better chance of getting rain will be late Sunday and Sunday night. We could even see a few thunderstorms in the blend. Our daytime temperatures will moderate to about 51 Thursday and in the mid to upper 50s Friday and Saturday. We may even touch the 60-degree mark by Sunday.

STORM ALERT 2010: The next chapter airs at 7:00 p.m. Thursday night in West/Central Alabama at Hale County High School in Moundville. That town is very famous for the Indian mounds. The program starts at 7:00 and they try to get you out at 8:15 since it is a school night. Join Ashley, Jason and James for some amazing Alabama weather stories and useful information on how to protect your family during weather threats. You might get there early, because the attendance has been very large. You might even win a prize at the end. They give out a number of those.

THE GREAT NORTH AMERICAN LANDSCAPE: Still no bitter cold build up in the Yukon Territory of NW Canada. In fact, temperatures were above zero in that area this morning. The morning Snow Survey showed 56% of the lower 48 states had a snow cover this morning. Last week, there was 63% coverage. 288 inches was the deepest snow cover this morning at Alpine Meadows, California in the Sierra-Nevada Mountains at an elevation of 6,900 feet.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sometimes I feel like a semi-prisoner because Little Miss Molly has gotten such a hold on me she can dictate my schedule. I let her do that because I love her that much. She has a knack of wanting to go on a long walk right in the middle of my weather duty deadline. She will not take no for an answer. If I do not respond right away, she has developed a new tool where she backs off about 3 or 4 feet and lunges at me bouncing off of my leg with a sound that is half bark and half growl. Then she backs off and glares at me. On our walk this morning, Little Dino, who Molly hopes to marry when they get old enough, was having a fit to get out his back door and chase us down. Life goes on.
