...Happy Valentine's Day!...
Snow may be back for a return engagement across parts of Alabama on this Presidents' Day weekend. A fast moving low pressure system that we call an "Alberta Clipper" will bring precipitation to the area tonight and early Monday. The precipitation will start out as rain across Central Alabama, but should turn to snow during the evening. It should continue long enough to produce one to two inches of snow across areas north of a line from Aliceville to Calera to Roanoke. Two to four inches of snow could fall across the Tennessee Valley. The snow could cause travel problems Monday morning. On a good note, many schools and organizations are closed for the holiday. But many aren't, including some making up for a busted snow day in early January.
THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday will be cloudy and miserable, with cold temperatures in the 30s, a few flurries, and a biting northwest wind. Expect lows in the lower 20s Monday night. Tuesday and Wednesday won't be much better, with highs struggling to reach 40 degrees despite a good supply of sunshine. Temperatures will moderate a bit by Thursday and Friday. Another storm system will bring rain back to Alabama late Friday night and Saturday.
CYCLONE RENE PASSES AMERICAN SAMOA: Severe Tropical Cyclone Rene passed within about 100 miles of American Samoa on Saturday morning, with top winds of 115 mph. Sustained gale force winds were reported on the island (which is in the South Pacific about 800 miles northeast of Fuji and a couple of thousand miles northeast of New Zealand.) Winds gusted to full tropical cyclone force overnight. The airport at Pago Pago was closed.
WEATHERBRAINS: Dr. Keith Blackwell is one of the leading tropical experts in the world. The Alabama native is a professor of meteorology at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. WILD RIDE: World champion paraglider Ewa Wisnierska survived despite impossible odds when she was sucked into a huge thunderstorm over New South Wales, Australia on this date in 2007. The massive storm carried her higher than Mount Everest, to an altitude of over 32,000 feet. She suffered being pounded by hailstones the size of oranges, being encased in ice at temperatures of -40F, and lightning arcing all around her. Doctors said that the fact she went unconscious for an hour due to oxygen deprivation may have saved her, allowing her vital systems to slow down. She came to at around 22,000 feet, and was able to gradually descend. The 35 year old woman suffered severe frostbite, blistering and bruises from the hailstones, but otherwise she was fine. The chances of her survival in such a situation were rated at almost nil. The previous record height measured for a paraglider was 24,000 feet. A member of the Chinese paragliding team was not so lucky the same day. He was killed by lightning from the same storm. His body was found an amazing 47 miles from his takeoff point.
