...Cold Today; Warmer Later This Week...

CHILL STAYS IN THE AIR: Cold weather headlines our forecast again today… we will struggle to reach the 40 degree mark with a chilly northwest wind and a mix of sun and clouds. There could be just enough moisture left over for a few scattered snow flurries, but most communities will be dry today. Look for another significant freeze tonight with a low down in the low 20s; some of the colder spots across North and Central Alabama could see the upper teens by daybreak tomorrow.

WARMER DAYS: We are projecting a nice day to day warming trend for the rest of the week, along with a pretty decent amount of sunshine each day. Look for a high in the mid 40s tomorrow, low 50s Thursday, and mid to upper 50s Friday. We should note that the average high for Birmingham for this time of the year is 59 degrees; the last time it was that warm was back on January 28 when the high in Birmingham was 62.

WEEKEND PEEK: A disturbance will bring a chance of light rain to Alabama as we begin the weekend. For now it looks like the best chance of rain will come from about 12:00 midnight Friday through 12:00 noon Saturday. This is not expected to be a major rain producer with rain totals under 1/2 inch. Sunday for now looks dry with a partly sunny sky. The high both Saturday and Sunday should be in the 50s. Then, another chance of rain shows up by Monday of next week.

SNOW DAYS: Most of Alabama had accumulating snow last Friday, and some parts of the state saw it again yesterday. Parts of North Alabama had 1/2 to 1 inch during the pre-dawn hours, while another 1/2 inch fell later in the day. There were many major accidents in the Birmingham metro area yesterday morning due to black ice.

ALMOST THAT TIME OF THE YEAR: Governor Bob Riley has proclaimed February 22-26, 2010, as Severe Weather Awareness Week in Alabama. The National Weather Service, Alabama Emergency Management Agency, and other supporting organizations, ask your help in providing the public with information about severe weather safety. Advance planning and increased awareness will help residents of Alabama survive these deadly storms.

STORM ALERT 2010 COMING TO HALE COUNTY THIS WEEK: Our annual severe weather rolls along; our next stop will be on Thursday at Hale County High School in Moundville. You can meet the ABC 33/40 Weather team, see some amazing Alabama weather stories, learn how to keep your family safe this tornado season, and win some cool stuff. The show begins at 7:00; be sure and get there early to get a good seat. This will be our first Storm Alert show in Hale County; we expect a great crowd.
