...Accumulating Snow Tonight...

Happy Valentine's Day! It might turn out to be one to remember for snow lovers across North and Central Alabama. Not a major event by any standard, but 1-2 inches of snow with the chance for higher amounts over Northeast Alabama is still a rare occurrence.

RAIN CHANGING TO SNOW: A vigorous low pressure system is located over southeastern Missouri early this afternoon. This low is being supported by a strong upper level system that will be moving eastward, pushing the surface low along. As this system moves east, a cold front will push into the Southeast. With upper level winds that are parallel to the front, much of the precipitation will come behind the frontal passage. That means that colder air will be spreading into the area while precipitation is occurring. Rain will begin this evening across North and Central Alabama, but will change over to snow for a period, likely during the late evening over Northwest Alabama, just after midnight in the I-65 corridor and a little later in the east. It should snow for 2-3 hours on average, and areas north of I-20 will generally get one to two inches. Areas northeast of Birmingham could get more. Areas south of I-20 north of a line from Sumter to Lee County could see a dusting to a little more than an inch. Monday will be miserable, with cloudy skies, a biting northwest wind and temperatures hovering right around freezing. There could also be a few snow showers. Areas that see accumulating snows will likely experience travel problems.

REST OF THE WEEK: Drier, but chilly weather will continue for Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures will moderate a little on Thursday ahead of our next storm system, that will bring a chance of rain by late Friday night into Saturday.

BASSMASTERS RETURNS TO BIRMINGHAM: The waters at Lay Lake open to Bassmaster Classic contestants for three days beginning Friday. Did you know that Birmingham was voted "America's Bass Capital" by readers of Bassmaster magazine? The Magic City will be hosting the prestigious event for the seventh time since 1996. Highlights of the tournament are the daily weigh-ins at the BJCC when the 51 anglers present their catches of the day. Weather won't be a factor at the weigh-ins, but could affect the anglers.

Friday looks like it will feature partly cloudy skies, light SE winds and highs in the 50s. Rain will be likely Saturday with temperatures in the 50s, falling during the afternoon. Sunday should be windy and cold with snow flurries. Bo Crawford, creator of the Armchair Angler blog and podcast will be along to talk about what kind of weather makes the fish really bite. ON THIS DATE IN 1895: The Gulf Coast recorded big time snows as a coastal low brought heavy snow from Texas to Alabama. 24 inches at Rayne, LA is the state's all time record. 22" in Lake Charles. 15.4" in Galveston. 8.5" fell in New Orleans and 6.2" in Biloxi. Mobile set its all time record snow with 6". Follow my daily weather history tweets on Twitter @ wxhistorian.
