...Better Than We Thought...

GOOD MORNING! Well, we have good news in the weather department this
morning. The storms that we expected to be ongoing this morning across the
area arrived much sooner than expected, during the evening hours. Light
rain persisted through much of the overnight, but it is lifting out of the
area this morning. Patchy fog and low clouds is prevalent across the area.

Low pressure is passing through North Central Alabama. Skies should remain
mostly cloudy, although a few breaks in the clouds will occur today.
The good news is that last night's rain, limited as it might have been, was
the main event. storms are not expected to be a problem today, as we earlier
thought. With the low pressure center passing us by already, there just
won't be sufficient instability to support many storms. So, while a couple
of isolated storms may form, they should not become severe.

TONIGHT AND MONDAY: Clouds should hang tough through the overnight hours
tonight and into early Monday morning. There could be a little more patchy
fog also. Skies should become partly cloudy and conditions should remain
dry. Temperatures will warm to near 80 degrees.

TUESDAY: It looks like showers and thunderstorms will become more numerous
again on Tuesday as another disturbance passes by to the north of Alabama.

WEDNESDAY AND BEYOND: A stronger low pressure system will pass to the north
of Alabama, producing more showers and storms ahead of a cold front. This
front looks like it will have enough oomph to make it through the area by
Thursday, finally clearing out the rain and storms. Friday looks nice, but
rain might return again on Saturday along with a chance of thunderstorms.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: A significant flooding event affected parts of
Jefferson and St. Clair Counties as persistent thunderstorms formed and
trained over the same areas. Damage totaled over $1 billion. Read more
about the disaster in today's Weather Talk blog.

==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON: A beautiful Spring afternoon is in progress across Alabama,
with a good supply of sunshine and warm temperatures. There actually is a
thick layer of opaque cirrostratus and cirrus high across the sky, blowing
off from a huge thunderstorm complex over to our southwest.
This complex will approach us from the west tonight, spreading showers and
thunderstorms into the state after sunset along a warm front. Those storms
will spread across the area overnight, likely reaching a line from
Tuscaloosa to Auburn by midnight, and reaching Birmingham shortly
thereafter. You will likely hear thunder during the overnight hours.

SUNDAY FORECAST: Widespread showers and storms should be ongoing across the
area by daybreak tomorrow. The action should begin diminishing from the
west during the morning hours as the warm front moves northeast. I think we
will enjoy a dry period with even a little sun peeking through by late
morning in the Tuscaloosa and Birmingham areas. Highs tomorrow will be in
the middle 70s.

SEVERE WEATHER TOMORROW? As a surface low lifts into North Alabama during
the afternoon hours, and some sunshine starts working on that moist airmass
over the state in the wake of the warm front, more storms will develop.
Some of those could be on the strong to severe side. There is even the
potential for a couple of tornadoes, mainly over South Central Alabama.

MONDAY: The start of the new work week looks nice with a good bit of
sunshine after skies clear tomorrow night.

TUESDAY AND BEYOND: Another low pressure system will move along the Gulf
Coast early in the week. The models differ significantly in the timing of
this next system, with the NAM spreading rain and storms into the state late
Monday night, like the current system. The GFS delays the system until
Tuesday night/Wednesday. It looks like high pressure will dominate our
weather into next weekend, with fine weather prevailing.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: :The German airship Hindenburg had just completed a
trans-Atlantic flight and was coming in for a landing at the Naval Air
Station in Lakehurst, NJ. A thunderstorm had delayed landing of the
dirigible. The Captain circled over New York City as he waited for the
thunderstorm to clear, his passengers enjoying spectacular views of the Big
Apple's skyscrapers.

As the craft hovered for landing, a flame appeared. The fire rapidly spread
as 7 million cubic feet of hydrogen exploded. It took just 32 seconds for
the entire ship to crash into burning embers. Thirty six people died.

The cause of the explosion was never discovered for sure. It could have
been a bomb, planted to sabotage the luxurious airship. It could have been
a
spark of static electricity. The Hindenburg was designed to be filled with
the non-flammable gas helium, instead of hydrogen, but the U.S. would not
sell the lighter-tan-air gas to the Nazi regime out of fear that it would be
used for military purposes. Therefore, the airship had to be filled with
the highly explosive hydrogen gas.

...Nice Day For Golf...

GOOD MORNING: Lots of folks heading out to the Regions Charity Golf
Tournament at Ross Bridge. And the weather will be nice for it with dry
conditions prevailing today. Skies should be fair to partly cloudy.
Temperatures will be in the upper 70s by mid-afternoon. High pressure over
eastern Iowa will maintain a hold on our weather today.

RAIN CHANCES RETURN: But signs of change are already on the horizon.
Things are not quite so positive for tomorrow. We will keep our fingers
crossed that it will not be a major rain event, but it does appear that rain
and storms will begin tonight after midnight and continue through at least
part of the day tomorrow. The unwelcome precipitation will be courtesy of a
wave of low pressure that will ripple along the surface front to our south.
So, rain gear will be something you will want to remember as you head to
Ross Bridge Sunday.

START OF THE NEW WEEK: By Monday morning, the low will be over the Smoky
Mountains of eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina and drier air will
flow in the state. Consequently, Monday and Tuesday will be nice days with
highs in the 70s and low humidities. But change will once again be in the
cards by late in the day on Tuesday.

WEEK AHEAD: Low pressure to the west of Alabama will push a warm front back
over us by Wednesday. Showers and storms will move accompany the front.
Once we are in the warm sector of the cyclone, we will deal with a round of
showers and thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon and night. Some of them could
be severe.

ON THIS DATE IN 1975: Very large tornado kills 3 and does $250 million in
damage in Omaha NE, making it the most costly US tornado to that time. 133
were injured. The path of the storm was 10 miles long and up to 1/4 of a
mile wide. The tornado moved through the western section of town before
lifting over the northern part of the city, but not before it had destroyed
287 houses and damaged 1400 others. Excellent warnings kept the death toll
amazingly low.

AT LEAST A TEMPORARY BREAK: Drier air was gradually working its way
into NW and West Alabama this afternoon and slightly lower temperatures.
We believe now that this minor cold front will push its way well down
into South Alabama before stalling. By Sunday, a low pressure area will
form along the front in Mississippi and move NE through Alabama.

So, what does all of this mean for Alabama? It looks like a decent
break from the rain for most of tonight and almost all day Saturday
except in the extreme south. Here in Central Alabama, a few showers may
show up late in the day. However, overnight Saturday night, there will
be an increase in showers and thunderstorms. By Sunday, much of the
state will be wet and some spots could get locally heavy rain.
Meanwhile, another front will dry us out again for Monday and drop the
humidity somewhat. See our day-by-day forecast.

REGIONS CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT: Looks like most of Saturday will be
dry for the second round, but it may be a different story on Sunday as
rain and some thunderstorms overspread much of the state.

RAINFALL AMOUNTS: It is likely that some parts of North-Central
Alabama received as much as 2 inches of rain this morning. Here are some
selected amounts for the 24 hours ending at 7:00 this morning:

1.14 inches at Steele (North St. Clair County)
1.00 at Sylacauga
1.30 at Hamilton (since midnight)
0.93 at Shelby County Airport
0.97 at Jasper and Talladega

SUPER HAILSTORM: It happened on May 5, 1995 in Dallas-Ft. Worth when
510 people were injured—mostly from hail. Thousands of people were
caught outside in the annual Mayfest celebration. Another 21 people died
from flash flooding in the area. Total property damage was an incredible
$1.5 billion.

OTHER FRIDAY NOTES: Over 1 inch of rain in the last 24 hours in
Dallas-Ft. Worth...well over 1.50 inches at Little Rock, Austin and San
Antonio...101 was the USA hot spot in Laredo Thursday...coldest in the
lower 48 was 20 this morning at Livingston, Montana, Stanley, Idaho and
in Yellowstone National Park.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: For the fourth morning in a row, the same
robin couple has appeared at daybreak walking up our front walk just
outside my office window. One of the robins obtains a wild strawberry
from a bush growing in our shrubbery. This morning the other robin got
in a fight with him, but I think he swallowed the little tiny strawberry
quickly. Little Miss Molly was not awake yet. I gave her free rein on
our half-mile walk this morning and she took forever. Plenty of birds
were singing, but we haven’t seen or heard our friends, the old crows,
in nearly two weeks. We miss them...the Old Crow Motel sure is lush and
green...looks like it is healthier than last year. We hope it is around
for quite a few more years. That is where we saw two old crows in a
vicious argument on the very first day Molly and I walked together three
years ago. That’s why we immediately named that old tall discombobulated
tree the old Crow Motel. Life goes on.

...Some Rain At Times Today...

An unsettled weather pattern will continue across Alabama today, with
scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms likely. While a few strong
storms will be possible, the threat of a major severe weather threat at this
time looks rather low. Most communities will see about one inch of rain
during the next 12 hours or so.

TOMORROW: Drier air is forecast to filter into the northern half of the
state tomorrow, and most of the day should be dry. Any showers should be
rather isolated, and mainly south of Birmingham. Showers will begin to
increase tomorrow night.

SUNDAY: We will forecast periods of rain and few a thunderstorms Sunday as a
wave of low pressure forms on the old front over Central Alabama. While the
rain won't last all day, it could rain at any time on Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: The chance of rain on Monday looks small, but a few showers and
storms could return by Tuesday night and Wednesday. A significant storm
system
approaches at the end of the week, which has the potential to bring the risk
of strong to severe storms to Alabama.

YESTERDAY'S RAIN: Rain totals around Alabama yesterday included 1.14" at
Steele, 1.06" at Leeds, 0.99" at Mr. Cheaha, 0.70" at Greystone Farms, 0.69"
at Nauvoo, 0.44" at Clay, and 0.37" at Riverchase,

ROAMING: Hottest spot in the nation yesterday was Laredo, TX with 101
degrees. Hailstones the size of softballs were reported last night near
Mertzon, TX.

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is mostly a stormy and wet story, but with
some breaks. Overall, we should get quite a bit of rain by the time the
weekend is over. At least the temperatures will not be out of control.
Starting tomorrow and all the way through Sunday, we don't believe the high
temperature will reach 80. Don't cheer too much, because the old dew point
is going to be riding rather high which means there will be plenty of
humidity.

About the north half of the state continues under a slight risk of
severe weather for the remainder of this afternoon and overnight. Any severe
storms should be isolated in nature, but those could produce some damaging
winds and some large hail.

BIG QUESTION MARK SATURDAY: Our forecast over the weekend is hinged
greatly on a weak cold front and how far it will fight its way into the Deep
South. Two of our main weather models are fairly persistent that North and
Central Alabama will get a temporary break from the rain part of Saturday.
The weak front would need to push to near Montgomery for that to happen.
Regardless, a low pressure area will form on that front later and move
eastward. This will spread showers and thunderstorms back over most of the
state Saturday night and Sunday.

Bottom line: in the Birmingham area, where a major golf tournament
will be under way, there is a decent chance that a good part of Saturday may
be dry, but not Sunday.

DATELINE: GULF OF MEXICO: Data buoy #42001 was reporting a water
temperature of 80.1. A year ago at this time, it was 75.6. There is growing
concern that the Gulf of Mexico, across the board, has warmer water
temperatures than at this same time last year. And we all know what happened
last year. This means that we could see an early start to the tropical storm
season, although water temperature is just one piece of the pie. When the
sea surface temperature gets to the mid 80s, hurricanes really like that.
When it gets to about 86 or 87, it is like giving a kid all the candy he
wants.

David Emory Stooksbury, from the University of Georgia, advises that
sea surface temperatures reaching 82 does not normally occur until June.
This year, by early May, much of the Caribbean water had reached 82 degrees.
Not only are sea surface temperatures abnormally warm for early May, he
reports, but the entire hurricane season is expected to be very active.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little stick-tight pal, Little Miss
Molly, tickles me when she is ready to fold up for the night. She will jump
up on my king-size bed, make about 10 revolutions and with a sudden loud
moan and groan, she will go kerplop. It feels like a minor earth tremor. A
number of times in the middle of the night, she will suddenly stand up,
stretch her neck as far upward as she can, moan some more, go round and
round in a circle for 10 or 15 times and plop down again. It's the way dogs
act. They are fun to watch. Life goes on.

TREACHEROUS FORECASTING: We may be going out on a limb, but we are
making some changes in our forecast for this weekend. It depends almost
entirely on a cold front pushing down into Alabama and how far south of
Birmingham it can push before running out of gas. Latest projections show
that it may push to south of Montgomery. Based on that, and a lot of other
data that we crunched, we are pretty much eliminating rain for the I-20
corridor including Birmingham for Saturday. We think what occurs will mainly
be south of Birmingham. In fact, it could be well south of the city.

Earlier we thought Sunday would be mostly dry with a good bit of
sunshine. We are also changing that to mention an increase in clouds with
some more rain spreading into the area by afternoon. This forecast may not
be sealed in gold yet, but that is our present thinking.

BACK TO THE PRESENT: Scattered thunderstorms were developing this
afternoon over Extreme North Alabama. A few of those could be strong this
afternoon and into the evening. The SPC issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch
for Central and East Arkansas, Extreme North Mississippi and part of West
Tennessee until 9 o'clock tonight. Back in Alabama, there is also a
chance of some thunderstorms Thursday afternoon and night. Our best chance
of rain should come on Friday when there could be some locally heavy amounts
along with some thunderstorms.

NEW ORLEANS: City officials say that the next time a major hurricane
threatens New Orleans, the city will be evacuated and secured. There will be
city transportation to help in the evacuation, including buses and trains.
Airlines may help also.

FORT WORTH: Some planes were flipped over at a Fort Worth Airport
yesterday. There were numerous reports of large hail, high winds over
Central and North Texas. At Windcrest, Texas, in Bexar County, hail as large
as 2.5 inches in diameter fell for as long as 30 minutes.

HORRORS: A recent poll shows that nearly one third of young
Americans between 18 and 24 could not locate Louisiana on the map despite
Hurricane Katrina. National Geographic conducted the poll. An amazing 48%
were unable to identify Mississippi. I remember a study in the NWS back in
the 60s or 70s that found that most people cannot name the counties that
surround their own county even if they have been living there a long time.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Saw Mr. And Mrs. Robin slowly walking
up our front walk as I was sitting in my office before sunrise today. Sure
glad Miss Molly did not see them. Minutes later, at sunrise, she had me out
for a half-mile walk. There were so many birds singing and dogs barking that
I considered it a sunrise sernade-thinking of Glenn Miller's famous
song...Flo Ingram is a good friend and subscriber to our E-Forecast. She
lives in Hueytown. Over the weekend, she returned home and ran over her
little cat named, Boots. The cat was lying in the driveway. She cried for
much of the weekend. A horrible accident but it again shows that we should
treasure the time we have with our beloved pets.

...Afternoon Storms Remain Isolatedd...

Alabama's weather won't change much today and tomorrow, with partly sunny
warm days and the risk of just a few isolated late afternoon and nighttime
showers and storms. The best chance of those storms will remain over the
Tennessee Valley region of extreme north Alabama, but one or two could show
up as far south as I-20. High temperatures should be in the low 80s.

FRIDAY/SATURDAY: Coverage of showers and storms should increase during the
day Friday in response to an approaching upper trough. Periods of rain and
storms are likely Friday, Friday night, and during the day Saturday. A few
strong storms will be possible, but at the moment it looks like instability
values won't support a major severe weather threat.

Rainfall amounts of one to two inches are likely for the northern half of
the state, and some places near the Tennessee Valley might wind up with over
three inches.

SUNDAY: Drier air will flow in here over the latter half of the weekend, and
we expect Sunday to be a dry and pleasant day with the sky becoming mostly
sunny, and afternoon temperature reaching the low to mid 70s.

The dry weather should last into the first half of next week with mild
afternoons and cool nights for early May.

DID YOU KNOW? Hurricane season is less than one month away. It begins on
June 1, and runs through the end of November. Most of the stronger
hurricanes come in August and September, when the water is very warm in the
Atlantic basin. The first tropical storm this year will be named Alberto,
followed by Beryl, Chris, Debby, Ernesto, Florence, Gordon, Helene, Isaac,
Joyce, Kirk, and Leslie.

==================================================================

BEST CHANCE OF RAIN END OF WEEK: The weather is slowly changing
across Alabama, but we do not see a large number of showers and
thunderstorms until Friday and Saturday. Actually, the Storm Prediction
Center extended a slight risk of severe weather down into extreme North
Alabama for this afternoon and tonight. They based it on some outflow
boundaries coming out of storms in Arkansas and Middle Tennessee. Here in
Central Alabama there should be very few.

Same story tomorrow and Thursday. There should be a general increase
in showers and thunderstorms Friday and some communities will get more than
one inch of rain. They will continue most of Friday night and Saturday,
finally decreasing late in the day Saturday. Next Sunday and Monday should
have very nice weather.

LET'S TALK TORNADOES: Just because March and April have passed does
not mean that Alabama is out of its prime severe weather season. It can
extend well into May. In fact, a vicious tornado touched down north of
Demopolis on May 27, 1973 and stayed on the ground until it lifted on the SW
slopes of Mt. Cheaha in East Alabama making it our longest track tornado.
The tornado devastated the heart of Brent in Bibb County killing 5 people
and injuring 56. More than 12,000 acres of timber was destroyed. It was an
F4. May 27 seems to stand out like a sore thumb, because on that date in
1917, an outbreak of tornadoes across Central and North Alabama brought
death and destruction. Some communities along the Jefferson-Walker County
line were almost wiped off the map, especially the community of Bradford.

Dan McCarthy was a guest on our Weather Brains broadcast this week.
He is in charge of keeping the tornado log for the Storm Prediction Center.
He told us last night that he had finished the 2005 numbers. There were
1,264 tornadoes in the nation in 2005. There were 38 fatalities. Already in
2006, we have 49 fatalities-well ahead of last year. Our neighboring state
of Tennessee has suffered 35 of those 49 fatalities and that was in two
major events on April 2 and April 7. The first tornado death of the year
occurred on January 13 in the community of Belleville in South Central
Alabama.

JUST TO MAKE YOU SHIVER: You may have absolutely no interest in
this kind of stuff, but I was fascinated by the fact that Vostok, Antarctica
was reporting 96 below zero this afternoon with a wind chill of 121 below.
The station is located at an elevation of 11,200 feet and much of that is a
tremendous sheet of ice...by the way, the lowest in our lower 48 states this
morning was 22 at Stanley, Idaho.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It is my fault. I have played ball
with Little Miss Molly so much in the last three days that she has raised
the bar. She fully expects me to play ball every time I walk through the
living area. I have to walk through that area to get to the kitchen, to get
coffee, or to go to the bathroom...on a half-mile walk yesterday afternoon,
we immediately saw Jo-Jo through the hedgerow behind our house and Molly is
still clearly in love with him. Not only was Jo-Jo barking, but he caused
the new dog at that house to start that long lonesome bark which ends with a
sudden high note. I sure do enjoy hearing that. I guess every dog has a bark
of their own. Miss Molly sure did get excited also when she ran into
Bridgette (another shih-tzu) and her mom, Lisa, at the far end of the
walking track. Every walk is different, Molly loves them all. Life goes on.

...Warmer Afternoons Ahead...

A summer-like pattern is developing for Alabama during the mid-week period.
Temperatures will reach the low 80s each day through Thursday, about five
degrees above normal for early May. While the main thunderstorm action will
stay north of the state, storms might drift southward toward the Tennessee
Valley on a daily basis, and a few widely scattered storms are possible as
far south as I-20. The chance of any one spot getting wet today and tomorrow
is about one in five for North-Central Alabama. Where storms do form, they
could be strong.

Rain and storms will be increasing late this week on Friday with the
approach of a strong upper trough. In fact, looks like a good soaking for
much of the state from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning; most
places can expect one to two inches of rain. A few strong storms could be
involved as well; that threat will depend on the amount of unstable air
available.

REGIONS GOLF CLASSIC: This year the old Bruno's Memorial Classic is the
Regions Charity Golf Classic, and will be played at the Ross Bridge course.
The Senior PGA golfers will have to dodge raindrops at the course Friday
afternoon and at least part of the day Saturday, but the good news is that
Sunday should be a beautiful day for the final round, with ample sunshine
and high temperatures in the mid 70s.

REMINDER: All ABC 33/40 weather video and audio products are now available
on iTunes! for those of you with an iPod; just search ABC 33/40 and you can
subscribe from there.

EXTREMES: Triple digit heat has returned to the southwest U.S. deserts; the
national hot spot yesterday was Death Valley, CA with 107. Boulder, WY
dropped to 17 yesterday morning.

EXCELLENT RACE WEATHER: Too bad the NASCAR race at Talladega was
wiped out by the rain Sunday, but today it was a 180-degree turn-around. A
sparkling blue sky, not much wind, comfortable temperatures.

I am sorry the race had to be delayed, but I sure did enjoy the
weather Sunday. I love a cool, rainy day especially when there is some wind.
That is the main thing I do not like about Alabama's climate-there is not
enough wind, especially through the summer months.

Nice comfortable temperatures for tonight with lows in the 50s.
Afternoons will be warming up a bit, but nothing unusually warm for much of
this week. Highs should be mostly in the lower 80s.

RAINFALL DEPARTMENT: Only a slight chance Tuesday and Wednesday.
Showers and some thunderstorms will increase in number on Thursday,
especially Thursday night. Friday looks wet with showers and thunderstorms
and some parts of Central Alabama could receive more than an inch of rain.

APRIL RAINFALL: A great disparity in rainfall around the state.
Birmingham is probably in better shape than anyone ending the month with an
excess of 6.77 inches so far this year. In contrast, Mobile has a shortfall
of 12.41 inches of rain for the year, even though they got over 1 inch
yesterday. Huntsville is 6.24 inches below normal and Montgomery needs 5.66
inches to break even.

IN OTHER PLACES: It is extremely dry in parts of the SW and West,
including places as nearby to Alabama as Southern Mississippi and Louisiana.
New Orleans is 11.8 inches below normal for the year and Baton Rouge 12.50
inches short...in the Texas Panhandle, Amarillo has only received 1.50
inches of rain for all of 2006 which is less than 1/3 of normal. That part
of the country has had an enormous problem with brush and grassfires since
late winter and into spring. Literally hundreds of homes were burned.

RAMBLING: 19 in West Yellowstone, Montana was the coldest in the
lower 48 states this morning...coldest in Alaska was 13 below at Point
Lay...106 in Death Valley was Sunday's hottest...a very destructive F4
tornado severely damaged Minden, Louisiana on this date in 1933. 28 people
died. Witnesses described the tornado as sounding like a bunch of mad lions
on a speeding train.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly saw it more than 60
yards away. Her attention and curiosity went higher and higher as she slowly
approached. She probably stopped 10 to 15 times and lifted one of her front
paws like a bird dog to assess the situation. As she got closer and closer,
which took nearly 10 minutes, she stopped 5 or 6 more times, looked back
over her shoulder as if she wanted my advice. I urged her on. When she got
within 5 feet, a gust of wind picked it up and blew it over a clump of
grass. At that point, Molly bolted, headed home, and almost jerked me off my
feet. It was only an empty styrofoam cup. It is funny to see how the
smallest objects can spook that little girl when they move suddenly. I sure
did laugh at my little pal and she gave me a disgusted look. Another small
drama in the life of a little 9-pound puppy and I love her dearly. I should
not laugh but I can't help it. Life goes on.

...Race Day Rerun...

GOOD MORNING: Do you remember the old billboards, signs and car tags that
said "It's nice to have you in Birmingham"? Well, it is nice to have all of
our race fan friends here, but sorry you had to stay an extra day because of
the weather.

THE GOOD NEWS: Is that the weather will be much improved today. We will
start the day with low clouds or fog in most locations. Sunshine will
return by late morning, allowing temperatures to rise quickly into the upper
70s, with some locations making it even into the lower 80s. Yesterday's
windy conditions will be gone. It will be a perfect day at Talladega.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Our problems yesterday were courtesy of a big upper low
over the central art of the country and a trough extending down into
Mississippi. We were in the middle of the battleground between that trough
and a wedge of high pressure to our east. As the trough weakens, the flow
across North America will become zonal. Disturbances sliding by in the flow
will give us a slight chance of showers Tuesday and Wednesday. Expect a
better chance on Thursday, with mostly cloudy skies. Then there are
indications that low pressure will swing across the area on Friday, giving
us good chance of rain and storms.

WEEKEND: A little light rain will linger on Saturday morning, but skies
should clear during the afternoon. Sunday looks to be a very nice day with
lots of sunshine and comfortable temperatures in the 70s after a seasonably
cool start. Winds will begin to pick up Sunday afternoon and evening in
response to a very strong storm system over the Plains states. It could
bring severe weather and heavy rains to a wide area by Monday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1933: A very destructive F4 tornado struck Minden LA. 28
people died in the tornado that reportedly sounded like "mad lions on a
speeding train."

GOOD AFTERNOON! It is windy out there on this Sunday. Some of the
strongest winds I remember since our recent hurricanes of the past couple of
years. The winds are due to a strong pressure gradient between a trough of
low pressure over Mississippi and a wedge of high pressure to the east of
Alabama.

RAIN: In the area between the trough and the wedge...air has nowhere to go
but up and rain and some storms have been the result. This main activity
will overspread the area through the afternoon hours. It should begin to
diminish by this evening as the trough weakens as its upper low runs off to
the northeast and leaves it.

TONIGHT: The showers should diminish this evening and skies should begin to
clear later tonight. Temperatures will drop into the lower and middle 50s
overnight.

MONDAY: Tomorrow should feature partly cloudy skies and warmer
temperatures. Highs will warm back into the lower and middle 70s.

TUESDAY: A series of disturbances will be passing in the west to east flow
across the country during much of the week ahead. This will result in
periods of showers and even storms. A cold front associated with the first
disturbance will approach late in the day on Tuesday, increasing our clouds
and delivering a few showers Tuesday night.

WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY: Another disturbance will pass to our north on
Wednesday, bringing a few showers to North Alabama. Then a stronger
disturbance will allow a cold front to sag down into North Alabama beginning
Wednesday night. Rain and storms should increase late Wednesday night,
continuing through much of Thursday. Much of the area could get a decent
soaking from this system if it plays out as the GFS model depicts.

FRIDAY: With the front in our proximity, precipitation will continue for
much of the day on Friday. The rain should finally begin to move out late
in the day.

THE WEEKEND: A big trough of low pressure will set up shop over the eastern
United States. As it does some clouds and showers may linger into Saturday.
By Sunday, high pressure at the surface should build into the area, finally
removing the precipitation and clouds.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: As White Sox outfielder Magglio Ordonez went back for
a fall ball in the fifth inning in their game against the A's in Chicago, he

lost the ball in dense fog that had enveloped the stadium. The ball fell
safely, allowing batter Eric Byrnes to reach third base and drive in a run.
There were two fog delays during the game that totaled 45 minutes.

ON THIS DATE IN 1924: "Horrell Hill" tornado family cut paths of
destruction along a 105 mile path in South Carolina. 52 people died in this
tornado family in a dozen small towns. Strongest tornado in the family was
an F4. Other killer tornadoes struck during the early morning hours, moved
into Georgia and then into South Carolina by late morning. 67 people died
in all, nearly half of them in the town of Horrell Hill.

...Race Forecast...

GOOD MORNING! Too bad we don't have last Sunday's weather for today's
running of the Aaron's 499 at Talladega. For the drivers, the good news, I
guess, is that it will be cool. Not such good news for the fans, although
sunburns will be at a minimum.

We continue to receive conflicting signals from our main numerical weather
prediction models, but hopefully we are close enough in now to envision our
forecast solution. Showers should be diminishing this morning, but a few
will be remaining through the afternoon. It will be breezy, especially this
morning, although those winds will diminish some by mid-afternoon. Skies
will remain cloudy and temperatures will be on the cool side thanks to the
easterly flow. In fact, most everyone should stay in the 60s all day, and a
few locations may remain in the 50s near the Georgia border.

TONIGHT AND MONDAY: The weather system that brought us the rain should
fall apart tonight, allowing some clearing tonight. Slightly drier air will
allow readings to drop to near 50 or slightly below tonight. Very
comfortable. Tomorrow will see at least some sunshine and readings will make
it back into the lower 70s.

TUESDAY FRONT: A cold front will edge into the area late on Tuesday,
increasing shower and storm chances. Look for highs in the 70s.

WEDNESDAY: A little mini-ridge of high pressure keeps us partly cloudy on
Wednesday.

THURSDAY: High pressure over the northern Gulf keeps our main moisture
source squeezed, but a few showers may work their way in on Thursday as
another system slides by in a west to east flow. A brief clearing spell
follows, but another system follows in its heels for Friday and another for
Friday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1888: 246 people reportedly died in the world's deadliest
hailstorm, which struck parts of India. Hailstones were the size of
baseball reportedly.

ON THIS DATE IN 1985: A giant slab of ice, 6 feet long and 8 inches thich
weighing over 1500 pounds, fell into a backyard in Hartford, CT. The ice
probably came off of a high flying jet plane.
