...Watching Dean...

Some of the all-time great hurricanes have traveled this path across
the Caribbean. 1988's Hurricane Gilbert would become the strongest
Atlantic hurricane measured until that time when the pressure fell to
899 mb in the Yucatan Channel. Hurricane Allen (class of 1980) dodged
and weaved through the islands of the Caribbean like a football
running back, never crossing land until it reached South Texas.
Hurricane Ivan passed this was three years ago on its way to a date
with Alabama weather history. And now we have Dean. Dean became the
17th strongest Atlantic hurricane we have ever observed this morning
when the central pressure in the storm dropped to 924 millibars. The
intensification has since leveled off as the storm goes through a
process we call eyewall replacement. It will tank up on the extremely
warm waters of the northwestern Caribbean tomorrow and Category Five
infamy looks likely.

MERCURY WATCH: At deadline time, the temperature at the Birmingham
Airport had reached 97F. There was still a chance that the
thermometer might read 100F before the day was out, perhaps starting
another triple digit streak. No one was at 100F at 2 p.m., quite a
change over the past several days. The heat has backed off just a tad,
but it is going to remain hot through much of the coming week. Heat
index values are high, with higher humidity levels to blame. Heat
index readings this afternoon were generally in the 100-105F range,
which is borderline dangerous.

THE FORECAST: It looks like the stubborn ridge of high pressure over
the southern United States will hold in place for the next five days,
keeping us mainly dry and hot. Afternoon highs will be in the middle
to upper 90s. Only isolated afternoon storms will be able to form,
and they will be few and far between. The GFS hints that the pattern
will begin to breakdown next weekend, with a large trough developing
over the eastern United States. This is quite a change from
yesterday's runs, which showed brief relief then a return to a large
sprawling upper high again. Hopefully the new developments will win
out.

ON THIS DATE IN 1983: Category Three Hurricane Alicia made landfall
on the Texas coast near Galveston. Winds gusted to 130 mph and the
storm surge was measured at twelve feet. Twenty two tornadoes touched
down during the storm, including a rare F2 twister that struck
Corsicana, Texas. A total of twelve fatalities and 1,800 injures
occurred with the hurricane. Total storm damage was $3 billion.
750,000 people were without power after the hurricane. Glass was
blown out of downtown skyscrapers in Houston, including the 71 story
Allied Bank Plaza building and the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Looting
occurred before police secured the area, and fifty people were
arrested. Fires broke out throughout Houston and firefighters were
hampered by low water pressure. Alicia was the first hurricane to
make landfall in the United States since Allen in August 1980, the
longest period of time that the U.S. went between landfalling
hurricane in the 20th century.

UNASHAMED!

Wouldn't it be awful to be ashamed of the most important things in our lives?

Many of us struggle when it comes to standing up for what we believe in.
Like our faith. There are times for all of us when we are tempted to be
ashamed of our faith. Or we downplay our faith so we won't offend someone.

Wouldn't it be great to live unashamed of our faith? Discover what it means
to live unashamed of the gospel and of Jesus Christ in a new sermon series

...Watching Dean...

The hurricane is the Caribbean will be one for the record books. Dean
became a Category Four storm early last evening, with the central
pressure dropping like a rock as the storms around the circulation fed
on the warm waters of the Caribbean. By the time that you read this,
Dean may well be a Category Five storm. It is only a matter of time.
The hurricane will brush the island of Hispaniola today. Jamaica
may well feel the full brunt of the hurricane on Sunday. Jamaica has
had its share of hurricanes. Ivan gave the island a glancing blow in
2004, and still killed 17 people. Gilbert in 1988 scored a direct hit
on the island as a Category Three storm, and killed 45. We will then
worry about the Cayman Islands, which were hard hit by Ivan when it
was a Category Five storm. Next up will be the Yucatan and then its
into the Gulf of Mexico. Our problem will be to figure out where it
goes then.

A NEW STREAK? Birmingham's longest streak of consecutive 100 degree
days came to an end yesterday as morning clouds and showers in the
vicinity kept the mercury in double digits. Still, the mercury made a
valiant run at it during the afternoon, but fell short with a high of
98F. Thunderstorms were fairly numerous across the area during the
afternoon, but rainfall amounts were not impressive. Several sites
did make it to 100F yesterday, including Huntsville at 102F, Pinson at
100F and Tuscaloosa at 102F. It just goes to show that the airmass
over Alabama is still capable of producing triple digit heat. We
could start another streak today, as we will call for a high of 100F.
But it should be shortlived.

OUR FORECAST: The intensity of the ridge will diminish just a tad as
we head into the coming week. But make no bones about it, there is
enough kick left in the ridge to keep us mainly dry and very hot
through the next several days. And temperatures will soar into the
upper 90s. It will still be hot. It will be very, very humid. The
combination will spell heat indices that flirt with the danger level.
It will be hazy. And there will be isolated afternoon and evening
storms. The ridge should break down a bit by the end of the week,
allowing for an increase in showers and storms, but don't look now.
The ridge will be back by the following week, meaning more hot and dry
weather. .

ON THIS DATE IN 1969: Hurricane Debbie was seeded by Project
Stormfury as the storm was east of Puerto Rico. After the seeding,
the winds in the hurricane dropped from 110 mph to 80 mph. The
dramatic headlines from Hurricane Camille's devastating blow to the
Mississippi Coast led to hopes that Project Stormfury could reduce the
damage caused by hurricanes. Later analysis would be inconclusive as
to whether the 30% reduction in winds was a result of the seeding or
occurred naturally. But the project would continue for a few more
years.

ABC 33/40 E-FORECAST
Afternoon Edition For Friday August 17, 2007

=========================================================
ALABAMA ONE CALL

KNOW WHAT'S BELOW
CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG

Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional excavator,
smart
digging means calling 811 before each job to find out where it's safe
to dig.

Every digging project requires a call to Alabama One Call--even small
projects
like building a fence, planting shrubs and trees or installing a
mailbox.

One free easy call to 811 or 205-252-4444 at least 48 hours prior to
digging:

* Gets utility owned lines marked for free!
* Complies with Alabama Act 94-487.
* Helps prevent undesired consequences and possible service
disruptions to
your neighborhood.

Visit http://www.al1call.com for more information.
=========================================================

At least at Birmingham, it appears that the 100 degree streak will
end at ten days. Areas that have been in the sun much of the day are
still pushing the century mark. And the triple digit heat may be
back soon…

GOODBYE STEAK? It was exciting to see even the few little storms
that developed yesterday across the area. Before they formed, the
mercury made it up to 103 at Birmingham, the tenth consecutive day of
triple digit heat, which is a record. More storms developed over
western sections of the state last night, dumping some heavy
rainfall. They were aided by the remnants of Erin and a weak
boundary to the north of Alabama. The airmass over Alabama is
charged again with lots of moisture, and storms will fire across the
area today. They will be more widespread than yesterday and could be
strong. 100 degree readings will not be as common today. Indeed,
our streak of triple digit heat may well end today. Areas that do
climb toward 100 will likely be near the Heat Advisory threshold, so
take it easy out there. The heat and humidity will continue for the
foreseeable future, with above normal temperatures through much of
the coming week if the ridge holds, as it looks that it will. Upper
90s will be more common in the days ahead, with a few 100s very
possible. The ridge should protect us from Dean…

DEAN: Hurricane Dean passed through the Lesser Antilles last night
and is in the eastern Caribbean now. The storm is tracking west
northwestward. The warm waters of the Caribbean will support Dean's
ambitions to become a major hurricane, or worse. As we go through the
weekend, there is a good chance that the hurricane will grow into a
Category Four monster. It will pass south of the Dominican Republic
on Saturday afternoon. It will pass very close to Jamaica on Sunday,
likely putting the island on the worst side of the hurricane. It
will then pass through the northwestern Caribbean and make landfall
on the Yucatan Peninsula on Monday. The official track carries the
hurricane on a west northwesterly course into the southwestern Gulf
of Mexico. It looks like the hurricane will then head toward the
Texas/Mexico border, but lots could happen between now and then.

ON THIS DATE IN 1969: On the morning of Sunday, August 17, 1969,
Hurricane Camille was on the move, taking a more westward track than
had been anticipated by forecasters. Warnings were hurriedly shifted
westward during the early morning and evacuations were rushed into
action on the Mississippi coast. At the NHC, Director Robert Simpson
read the storm surge guidance from the experimental model SPLASH. It
indicated that the surge would be higher than 20 feet. No one
believed that to be possible. When an Air Force plane found winds of
190 mph in the hurricane at mid-afternoon, it was apparent that
Camille would be a record breaking storm. Advisories called for a 20
foot surge. The actual height at Pass Christian was 22.4 feet.
Nearly 200 people died on the Mississippi Coast.

UNASHAMED!

Wouldn't it be awful to be ashamed of the most important things in
our lives?

Many of us struggle when it comes to standing up for what we believe in.
Like our faith. There are times for all of us when we are tempted to be
ashamed of our faith. Or we downplay our faith so we won't offend
someone.

of 103 tied the record high for August 16 (it was last set in 1995),
and extended our string of consecutive 100 degree days to 10, also a
record. Most likely, today will be the 11th day in a row with triple
digit heat for Alabama as we are forecasting a high of 101. There
should be enough moisture for a few isolated showers and storms this
afternoon, but many communities will stay dry.

Heat levels will back down only slightly over the weekend; we will be
bold and daring and forecast a high of only 98 on Sunday afternoon.
Like today, there will be enough moisture for a few widely scattered
showers and storms during the afternoon and evening hours. The weather
should remain in a holding pattern through early next week.

TROPICAL TROUBLE: Erin moved into the Texas coast early yesterday, and
the remnant circulation will be responsible for heavy rain and the
threat of flash flooding over parts of Central and East Texas today.
But, the big story is Hurricane Dean, which is moving into the
Caribbean this morning. Dean is forecast to strengthen into a
dangerous, category four hurricane within the next 36 hours. The
official forecast takes the big storm south of Cuba and Jamaica over
the weekend. Then, by early next week, it should be near the northern
tip of Mexico's Yucatan peninsula. The computer models have adjusted a
bit to the north on the most recent runs, which means an increased
risk to the Texas coast toward the middle part of next week.

But, we caution you there is little skill in forecasting the specific
landfall point of a hurricane this far in advance. All interests
around the coast, from Mexico to Mobile Bay, will need to monitor this
storm closely in coming days. If Dean moves across the Yucatan, it
will lose some of its strength. But, as it emerges into the warm Gulf
of Mexico, it will likely grow stronger again.

DROUGHT MONITOR: Birmingham's rain deficiency for the year is up to
20.65". The deficit at Tuscaloosa is a whopping 25.01"… Tuscaloosa has
received only 13.78 inches this year.

THE HEAT PARADE: Highs across Alabama yesterday included 107 at
Samantha (northern Tuscaloosa County), 106 at Muscle Shoals and Black
Creek (northeast of Gadsden in Etowah County), 105 at Vinemont and
Huntsville, and 104 in Decatur, Cullman, Anniston, and Pinson. The
"cool" spot in the state was Mobile with 95 degrees.

DRENCHED: Rain from Tropical Storm Erin totaled 3.90" at San Antonio,
and 2.59" at Houston yesterday. There were unofficial reports of 8
inches of rain in a few spots between those two cities. Flash flood
watches cover this same general area today, and an additional four
inches of rain is possible.

Ten straight 100 degree days to set a new mark in that category.
Twenty one straight ninety degree days. An all time record high for
any August. An average high so far in August of 100.1F, over nine
degrees above normal. And it looks like it is more of the same today.

CODE ORANGE AIR QUALITY ALERT: Our air quality is unhealthy for
sensitive individuals. People with pulmonary concerns should limit
their outdoor exposure as our heat wave continues.

ANY RELIEF IN SIGHT? It feels a little hotter this afternoon because
of increase humidity. Temperatures are actually a little lower
thanks to the moisture, but the heat indices are a little higher.
The increased moisture will also set off a couple of isolated storms
this afternoon. Coverage will be less than five percent, but it is a
tiny sign of hope. Quite a few 100s through the weekend, but we are
heading toward a more normal summertime pattern by next week. And
keeping a wary eye on Dean.

DEAN: Hurricane Dean is going to be a bad one. Wind shear has
relaxed and the storm will continue to move over waters with high
heat content. It began to really intensify overnight and is now a
hurricane, replete with an eye. It has Hurricane watches and
warnings are in effect for the Lesser Antilles, where the storm will
arrive tomorrow. Dean makes the islands on Friday as a strong
category two hurricane and moves into the Caribbean. It will spend
Saturday churning up t he waters south of Puerto Rico and
Hispaniola. It will pass Jamaica late on Sunday and be south of
western Cuba on Monday. It will become a major hurricane over the
weekend. Then it likely strikes the Yucatan, crosses the Bay of
Campeche and moves into northeastern Mexico. Having said all that,
nothing is poured in concrete yet with that track and we will be
watching the strength of the heat ridge over the South.

ERIN: Erin moved inland on the Texas coast near Lamar this morning.
Winds were not an issue. Victoria, Texas is thirty inches above
average in the rainfall department for the year, so they don't need
anymore. But they are getting a steady rain today from Tropical
Storm Erin. Those rains will move across the Hill Country of Texas
today and tonight.

ON THIS DATE IN 1969: Residents along the Gulf Coast were nervously
monitoring reports on dangerous Hurricane Camille in the Gulf of
Mexico. NHC Director Robert Simpson was even more nervous, because
he did not have reconnaissance planes at his disposal. The Navy had
all of them in Puerto Rico flying missions into Hurricane Debbie for
Project Stormfury, the hurricane modification project. Simpson knew
the storm was strengthening. He called on the Air Force to fly an
Air Weather Service plane out of Illinois into Camille. Early on
Saturday evening, August 16th, an Air Force C-130 plane investigating
Hurricane Camille in the Gulf of Mexico found an unbelievably low
central pressure of 905 mb. Sustained winds were 160 mph. This
information allowed forecasters to warn residents along the coast
that Camille would cause damage of unprecedented proportions......

...Hottest August Weather On Record...

TOO HOT: Yesterday was the hottest August day on record for many
Alabama cities. Birmingham's official high was 105, a new record high
for the month of August, and within two degrees of the all time high
of 107, set on July 29, 1930. It was also the ninth consecutive day of
triple digit heat, another record. Up in Northwest Alabama, the high
in Muscle Shoals was 107 degrees, within one degree of their all time
high of 108, last set on August 8, 1930. The high in Tuscaloosa was
106, while Anniston peaked at 104. Once again, about the only good
news yesterday was that humidity values were very low during the peak
of the heat. Many communities were reporting relative humidity values
between 15 and 19 percent during the mid-afternoon hours, so heat
index was not an issue, thankfully.

BACK INTO THE OVEN: Alabama will sizzle again today underneath a
relentless upper air high, and above a very dry topsoil layer. Most
places will rise back into the 100 to 106 degree range this afternoon.
Dewpoints should be slightly higher today, so actual observed highs
might be a degree or two "cooler", but heat index levels will rise. It
is not out of the question that a few isolated storms might show up
this afternoon, but for now the chance of any one spot getting wet is
so small we won't mention it in our formal forecast.

THE DAYS AHEAD: Heat levels will every so slowly drop over the weekend
and next week as the upper air high breaks down. Slightly cooler air
aloft will mean the chance of widely scattered afternoon showers and
storms tomorrow through the weekend, but unfortunately we won't expect
any really widespread rain for the next five days.

A PAIR OF TROPICAL STORMS: Tropical storm Erin is moving into the
lower Texas coast this morning with lots of heavy rain. Flooding is
possible all the way from Brownsville to Galveston, and westward
across the Rio Grande valley.

Out in the Atlantic, it sure looks like Dean will become a hurricane
at some point during the next 24
hours. The system is about 850 miles east of the Lesser Antilles, and
is moving steadily to the west at around 20 mph. The models continue
to shift the track of Dean to the left, and it now look like the
system will pass through the Leeward Islands, and move through the
Caribbean south of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola. The official NHC track
has Dean positioned south of the western tip of Cuba by Monday night
of next week as a major hurricane, packing sustained winds of 135 mph.
Many of the models keep Dean moving westward, across Mexico's Yucatan
peninsula, the Bay of Campeche, and into the Mexican Gulf coast well
south of Brownville, Texas late next week. But, we caution this is
still very early in the game, and major changes in that solution are
possible in coming days. All interests around the Gulf coast need to
watch Dean.

OTHER HOT SPOTS: Greenwood, Mississippi soared to 106 degrees
yesterday, while Little Rock and Nashville reached 104. St. Louis is
also in the heat parade with 105.

=========================================================

Today will mark the ninth consecutive day that we have seen triple
digit heat at the Birmingham Airport. Montgomery has experienced ten
straight days of 100 degree heat. This heat wave is quickly taking
its place as one of the great ones in Alabama history. The mercury
reached 104 at Birmingham yesterday, the hottest day of the current
run and the hottest day here since July 17, 1980. We might well be a
degree hotter today. That would be the hottest ever in August here.
The all time record high in Birmingham is 107.

ANY RELIEF IN SIGHT? It's hard to imagine that we would be grateful
for highs only in the middle 90s, but with our recent hot spell, a
high of 96 looks great. We will see more of that as we head through
the weekend and end to next week and the huge heat bubble begins to
break down and slide a little east by Sunday. We will likely see
100s until then. We will reintroduce the chance of an isolated storm
by Saturday, with slightly better chances by Sunday.

DEAN: Tropical Storm Dean is steaming quickly to the west in the
Atlantic, about 1,000 miles east of the Lesser Antilles. The storm
will increasingly find itself over warmer ocean water and wind shear
will be light, so steady intensification is anticipated. It should
become a hurricane during the next twenty four hours. It now appears
likely that Dean will take a more westward track, which will carry it
into the Caribbean. It could become quite an intense hurricane over
the Caribbean. It almost certainly will become a major hurricane.
By late Sunday night, the hurricane will be near the Southwest coast
of Haiti, heading toward Jamaica. It seems highly likely the
hurricane will move into the Gulf. It is way too early to get
specific after that. We will be monitoring it carefully.

ERIN: Convection with our Gulf system flared during the overnight
hours and the system was upgraded to Tropical Storm Erin. Erin has
its sights set on the Texas coast. Winds will not be the main
problem with Erin, but rather the heavy rains. Still, tropical storm
warnings are in effect for the Lower Texas Coast south of Freeport.
Erin will make landfall early tomorrow.
FLOSSIE: Out in the Pacific, Flossie is now a tropical storm, having
been downgraded this morning. Winds have been buffeting the Big
Island overnight with the center of the storm about 100 miles south
of the island. The heavy rain stayed off shore, although winds
gusted to around 60 mph.

ON THIS DATE IN 1969: Tropical Storm Camille formed near the island
of Grand Cayman. From the beginning, it was evident that Camille
would be an explosive storm. First reports from the first
reconnaissance plane indicated the storm had already reached tropical
storm strength and was too strong for the plane to penetrate. So
Camille, with a central pressure of 999 millibars and winds of 55 mph
was christened, bypassing the tropical depression stage. By
afternoon, the storm would already be classified as a hurricane with
a central pressure of 964 millibars.

...A Big Record Should Fall Today...

NINE IN A ROW: Yesterday's official high in Birmingham was 104
degrees. It was the hottest day in the Magic City since July 17, 1980,
when the mercury hit 105. It was also the eight consecutive day of 100
degree heat for Birmingham, which ties a record set during that big
heat wave in 1980. About the only positive news yesterday was that
relative humidity values were very low during the peak of the heat,
making it a little more tolerable. For example, the humidity in
Tuscaloosa at mid-afternoon was only 19 percent as the temperature
hovered about 105 degrees. This is the kind of heat you find in the
Desert Southwest (a "dry heat" as people out there say).

The triple digit longevity record will be shattered today as
temperatures will soar again; most spots will find a high this
afternoon somewhere between 100 and 106 degrees, almost 15 degrees
above normal for August 15. The warm aloft associated with the upper
air ridge also means another dry day; Birmingham's rain deficit for
the year is now up to 20.45".

The blast furnace weather will continue through Friday, but as the
upper ridge begins to finally break down, we expect afternoon highs to
drop into the mid to upper 90s late this weekend and early next week.
Unfortunately, there is still no sign of a major rain event here
during the next 10 days, although a few isolated afternoon showers and
storms could show up by Sunday and Monday.

TOPIC: TROPICS: Tropical depression five in the southern Gulf of
Mexico is moving toward the southern tip of Texas; there is still a
chance it could become a tropical storm by the time it reaches land
tonight. The main problem one way or another will be heavy rain and
the potential for flooding along the middle and southern Texas coast.
A tropical storm watch is in effect for the Texas coast from Freeport
southward, and for the northern Mexican coast as well.
And, out in the Central Atlantic, tropical storm Dean is moving
steadily to the west. The official forecast track from the National
Hurricane Center has been pulled a bit to the left; computer model
guidance now keeps a stronger ridge north of the system, and it
appears Dean could be close to Hispaniola by Saturday night as a very
significant hurricane. On this track, Dean most likely would enter the
Gulf of Mexico by Tuesday of next week. But, there has been a huge
spread among the global forecast models, with solutions ranging from
the northern coast of Mexico to New England. Needless to say, there is
plenty of uncertainty at this stage of the game, but there is a very
real chance it will impact some section of the U.S. coast toward the
end of next week. We will be watching closely.

AIR QUALITY ALERT: We should mention a code orange air quality alert
remains in effect for Jefferson and Shelby counties today; that
certainly makes sense with this hot, stagnant air overhead. This alert
means air quality in the Birmingham metro area could be unhealthful
for sensitive groups, like people with asthma.
