ALABAMA ONE CALL

Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional excavator,
smart
digging means calling 811 before each job to find out where it's safe
to dig.

projects
like building a fence, planting shrubs and trees or installing a
mailbox.

At least at Birmingham, it appears that the 100 degree streak will
end at ten days. Areas that have been in the sun much of the day are
still pushing the century mark. And the triple digit heat may be
back soon…

GOODBYE STEAK? It was exciting to see even the few little storms
that developed yesterday across the area. Before they formed, the
mercury made it up to 103 at Birmingham, the tenth consecutive day of
triple digit heat, which is a record. More storms developed over
western sections of the state last night, dumping some heavy
rainfall. They were aided by the remnants of Erin and a weak
boundary to the north of Alabama. The airmass over Alabama is
charged again with lots of moisture, and storms will fire across the
area today. They will be more widespread than yesterday and could be
strong. 100 degree readings will not be as common today. Indeed,
our streak of triple digit heat may well end today. Areas that do
climb toward 100 will likely be near the Heat Advisory threshold, so
take it easy out there. The heat and humidity will continue for the
foreseeable future, with above normal temperatures through much of
the coming week if the ridge holds, as it looks that it will. Upper
90s will be more common in the days ahead, with a few 100s very
possible. The ridge should protect us from Dean…

DEAN: Hurricane Dean passed through the Lesser Antilles last night
and is in the eastern Caribbean now. The storm is tracking west
northwestward. The warm waters of the Caribbean will support Dean's
ambitions to become a major hurricane, or worse. As we go through the
weekend, there is a good chance that the hurricane will grow into a
Category Four monster. It will pass south of the Dominican Republic
on Saturday afternoon. It will pass very close to Jamaica on Sunday,
likely putting the island on the worst side of the hurricane. It
will then pass through the northwestern Caribbean and make landfall
on the Yucatan Peninsula on Monday. The official track carries the
hurricane on a west northwesterly course into the southwestern Gulf
of Mexico. It looks like the hurricane will then head toward the
Texas/Mexico border, but lots could happen between now and then.

ON THIS DATE IN 1969: On the morning of Sunday, August 17, 1969,
Hurricane Camille was on the move, taking a more westward track than
had been anticipated by forecasters. Warnings were hurriedly shifted
westward during the early morning and evacuations were rushed into
action on the Mississippi coast. At the NHC, Director Robert Simpson
read the storm surge guidance from the experimental model SPLASH. It
indicated that the surge would be higher than 20 feet. No one
believed that to be possible. When an Air Force plane found winds of
190 mph in the hurricane at mid-afternoon, it was apparent that
Camille would be a record breaking storm. Advisories called for a 20
foot surge. The actual height at Pass Christian was 22.4 feet.
Nearly 200 people died on the Mississippi Coast.
