It was great to see Birmingham get back into the college football bowl
scene with the inaugural PapaJohns.com bowl today at Legion Field.
It's great to have all of the fans of East Carolina and South Florida
in the Magic City. The last bowl game played in Birmingham was the
1990 All-American Bowl. That game featured North Carolina State and
Michigan State. From 1977 to 1985, the game was called the Hall of
Fame Classic before that name was moved to Tampa. The bowl continued
here as the All-American Bowl.

INTERESTING FORECAST: Our fine spate of weather will continue through
the afternoon and overnight hours. Lows tonight will drop into the
upper 30s. Tomorrow will start off nice again, with lots of sunshine.
Temperatures will warm into the lower 60s before clouds start to move
in. By noon, a rapidly intensifying low pressure system will be well
south of the Louisiana coast, moving quickly northeast. You will see
our winds pick up out of the northeast as we head into the evening
hours. The low level airmass is dry, so it will take a while for rain
to start reaching the ground, but that should start happening between
sunset and midnight from the southwest. Rain will become heavy at
times through the overnight hours and Santa will have a wet ride as he
makes the rounds across the state. The low will track northeastward
across South Central and East Alabama, reaching a position near Lanett
early Christmas morning. Rainfall amounts will range from one inch
over western sections to nearly two inches in some eastern locations.

CHRISTMAS SNOW? The surface low will be followed by an upper low
that will track across North Alabama later on Christmas Day. There
will be some leftover moisture as the colder air aloft rotates over
the area. This will allow a changeover to light snow for much of the
northern half of the state at some point Monday night. It is
difficult to know how much moisture will be present, and surface temps
should be warm enough to preclude road problems. But there could be
light accumulations on grassy areas, roofs and cars. As the moisture
retreats to the northeast, snow flurries may continue over Northeast
Alabama through Tuesday morning.

REST OF THE WEEK: High pressure will be centered over West Central
Alabama by Wednesday morning, giving us ideal conditions for
radiational cooling. This will be the coldest morning of the period,
with a low in the upper 20s in most locations.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: On the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska, a group of 7
people was snowmobiling in the Chugach National Forest. One of the
riders went up on a slope on his machine and as his horrified
companions watched, the side of the mountain let loose. The avalanche
buried the 35 year old man. Rescueers located Foster within 30
minutes, homing in on the signal emitted by his avalanche beacon.
They used probe poles to locate his exact position, buried under 4
feet of hard packed snow. CPR could not revive the victim.

ON THIS DATE IN 1994: A hybrid low-pressure system which was a cross
between a tropical storm and typical winter nor'Easter roared out of
the Gulf of Mexico and across New England on the 23rd and 24th.
Hurricane force winds were felt in coastal areas. Winds gusted to 88
mph at Walpole, MA. Nantucket recorded a wind gust to 84 mph. 4.85
inches of rain fell in Plymouth MA.

...Good Looking Weekend...

Thursday and Friday's general rains were welcome across Alabama. One
half to two and one half inch rains were common across the state.
More storms systems are on the way in an active southern stream
pattern that is typical of an El Nino pattern.

LET'S GO BOWLING: Today looks good, weather wise, as was expected.
Excellent football weather will be in place for today's PapaJohns.com
bowl at Legion Field. Kickoff will be at noon. The University of
South Florida Bulls will take on the Pirates of East Carolina
University. Skies will be partly cloudy with kickoff temperatures in
the upper 50s, topping out near 63 during the game. We welcome all of
the fans of both of these fine schools and local pigskin fans as well.
It will be fair and cool tonight.

CHRISTMAS EVE: By Sunday morning, low pressure will have developed
over the western Gulf of Mexico and it will be headed northeast on a
direct track for Alabama. Skies should become cloudy during the
afternoon hours. Rain should enter the area Sunday night, reaching
the Birmingham area between 6 p.m. and midnight. It will become
breezy during the overnight hours as the low approaches.

SNOW FOR CHRISTMAS DAY? By morning, the low will be passing
Birmingham and our winds will shift around to the west. We will
continue to see cloudy skies with a little light rain during the day.
A very deep upper level trough will be moving across Alabama during
the afternoon. It will be associated with some really cold air aloft.
With moisture in place and the disturbance aloft, we could see a
little light snow. Surface temperatures should stay above freezing,
and no problems are expected. A few snow flurries continue on Tuesday
morning in northeastern sections, but skies should clear during the
day.

REST OF THE WEEK: By Wednesday, another eastern wedge will be
affecting the area, with a cool easterly flow, but dry conditions
should prevail through at least Thursday before the next system begins
to organize to the west of Alabama. By Thursday night, low pressure
will form south of the Louisiana coast. This low should take a more
southerly track, passing across the Florida Panhandle. Rains should
reach Central Alabama by Friday morning and continue into the evening
hours, but the heaviest rains should stay to our south.

ON THIS DATE IN 1994: A "hybrid" low-pressure system which was a
cross between a tropical storm and typical winter nor'Easter roared
out of the Gulf of Mexico and across New England on the 23rd and 24th.
Hurricane force winds were felt in coastal areas. Winds gusted to 88
mph at Walpole, MA. Nantucket recorded a wind gust to 84 mph. 4.85
inches of rain fell in Plymouth MA.

...More Rain by Sunday...

Rain will taper off across Alabama this afternoon as the big storm
system over the nation's mid-section lifts to the northeast and
weakens. We expect gradual clearing tonight as a slot of drier air
works into the state, and at this time the weather tomorrow looks
pretty decent as we wrap up the Christmas shopping season. For the
Papajohns.com Bowl at Birmingham's Legion Field tomorrow, the sky
should be mostly sunny for the 12:00 Noon kickoff with a temperature
of about 58 degrees, climbing into the low 60s during the game.

MORE RAIN BY SUNDAY: Don't get used to the drier weather tomorrow;
another upper trough will spin up a surface low in the northern Gulf
of Mexico Sunday, and that system promises to bring more rain to
Alabama. At this time it looks like the best chance of rain will come
from about 12:00 Noon Sunday through Midnight Sunday night, and
rainfall amounts of over one inch will be possible. No severe weather
is expected since the air should be rather stable.

CHRISTMAS DAY: The rain will exit the state during the pre-dawn hours
Monday, and colder air moves in with a cool north breeze. Looks like
we will stay in the 40s all day Monday, with clouds lingering much of
the day. Then, a light freeze is likely by early Tuesday and Wednesday
morning. We do note a strong upper level disturbance will swing across
the state Monday night, but with only limited moisture the chance of
snow flurries looks rather small at this point.

NEXT WEEK: Another rain event is shaping up for the end of next week
(a week from today, Friday 12/29), followed by a shot of colder air
for the following weekend. At this point we don't see any setup for a
good chance of significant snow or ice across Alabama or the Deep
South for the next five to seven days.

DIGGING OUT: Official totals from the big Colorado blizzard include 19
inches at Denver
International Airport (DIA), 28 inches at Wheat Ridge (near Denver),
and 44 inches at Glen Haven. DIA closed on Wednesday afternoon, and
probably won't open again until sometime this afternoon. Over 2,000
flights have been cancelled, and an estimated 4,700 travelers have
been stranded in the airport.

A GOOD SOAKING: Rain totals across the Deep South yesterday and last
night included 4.30" at New Orleans, 1.30" at Hattiesburg, MS, and
0.96" at Brookley Field in Mobile. Significant flash flooding was
reported around New Orleans. A number of counties in Southeast
Mississippi were under flash flood warnings last night.

EXTREMES: The warmest places in the nation yesterday were both in
Florida; Tampa and West Kendall reported a high of 84. Coldest place
around the nation was McGrath, Alaska with -25. In the "lower 48",
West Yellowstone, MT was the icebox with a low of 20 degrees below
zero.

========================================

SOAKED: Lets begin with some rain totals across Alabama during the
past 24 hours: 2.10" at Jemison, 1.91" at Clanton, 1.54" at Ashland,
1.42" at Greystone Cove (North Shelby County), 1.38" at Pell City,
1.35" at Cheaha State Park, 1.28" at Oneonta, 1.26" at our SKYCAM
location in downtown Birmingham, 1.11" at Inverness, 1.07" at Cullman,
.72" at Jasper, and .69" at Tuscaloosa, The heaviest rain was over the
southwest part of the state where Jackson (in South Clarke County)
measured 4.95".

The rain has ended over most of Alabama, and the sky should clear
slowly tonight as drier air continues to work into the state. Tomorrow
will be a great day for some last minute Christmas shopping; the sky
will be partly to mostly sunny with a high in the low 60s. Also great
weather for the Papajohns.com Bowl at Legion Field; for the 12:00 Noon
kickoff we expect the temperature to be around 59 degrees, rising to
near 62 during the game. There is no chance of rain.

MORE RAIN BY SUNDAY EVENING: Another upper trough will help to
generate a surface low in the northwest Gulf of Mexico Sunday. This
low will move to the northeast, spreading more rain into Alabama
Sunday afternoon. Looks like the most widespread rain will come Sunday
night, when some thunderstorms could be involved as well. Rainfall
amounts of one inch are likely; some spots could get more than that.
Then, the rain will end Christmas morning as colder air moves into the
state. Temperatures will hover in the 40s much of the day Monday with
a cool north breeze.

A CHANCE OF LIGHT SNOW MONDAY NIGHT? A big question mark on this one.
The morning runs of the primary American computer models are showing
another strong upper air system swinging through Alabama Monday night
into Tuesday morning, this time packing enough moisture for some
precipitation. And, with dynamic cooling there seems to be some risk
of light snow across much of North and Central Alabama Monday night
and Tuesday morning. But, trailing upper troughs like this one rarely
produce a significant amount of snow; for now we will just mention
some risk of flurries and we will fine tune the forecast over the
weekend.

The weather for the middle of the week will be cool and dry, with a
light freeze Wednesday morning. Then, another chance of rain is ahead
for the end of the week, on Friday December 29.
ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Ever heard of Sleetmute, Alaska? That was the
coldest spot in the nation this morning with a low of 29 degrees below
zero. In the lower 48 the cold spots were Alamosa, CO and Laramie, WY
with 16 degrees below zero. Of course, both spots have a thick blanket
of snow on the ground. Flights are finally resuming at Denver
International Airport after their big blizzard; at one point 4,700
people were stranded in the airport. Good news for Miss Molly fans;
J.B. Elliott returns from his well deserved vacation on Christmas Day!
From all of us at ABC 33/40... have a blessed and safe Christmas!

WE CAN USE SOME RAIN: Birmingham's rainfall surplus for the year has
been dwindling in recent weeks; our total for the year stands at
53.77", which is only 1.56" above normal. The total for December is
only 0.24", and our last major rain event was back on November 15 when
one inch of rain was recorded. So, the fact that a good soaking is
ahead is not necessarily bad news.
Rain should move into Alabama after midnight tonight, becoming
widespread during the day tomorrow. Rain will continue tomorrow night
and into the day Friday, and we project average rainfall amounts
between one and two inches statewide. There could be a little thunder
involved, but instability is very limited and severe weather programs
are not expected. The rain should begin to taper off Friday afternoon,
but some light rain is still possible in spots Friday night into early
Saturday morning.

PRE-CHRISTMAS WEEKEND: We believe much of the day Saturday will be
dry, but clouds will probably linger most of the day. For the
Papajohns.com Bowl at Legion Field, we are forecasting a kickoff
temperature of 57 degrees with a cloudy sky (the game begins at 12:00
Noon). The chance of any significant rain during the game at this time
looks very small. Then, on Sunday, more rain should move into the
state by the afternoon hours as a surface low forms in the northwest
Gulf of Mexico. This could set up another good rain event for the
state, with rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches possible again Sunday
afternoon through Monday morning.

CHRISTMAS DAY: Rain should end from west to east Monday morning, but
clouds will linger much of the day. As the rain moves out, cooler air
moves in. Temperatures will hover in the mid to upper 40s much of the
day Monday with a cool northerly breeze.

Even colder air slips in here Tuesday; we will have a hard time
reaching the mid 40s. And, by early Wednesday morning of next week we
should dip below the freezing mark with lows between 25 and 30
degrees.

A SHORT DAY: Winter officially begins tomorrow morning at 6:22 CST,
meaning tomorrow will be our shortest day of the year in terms of the
number of daylight hours. The sun angle is also the lowest of the year
as it will be directly over the Tropic of Capricorn. Our sunrise time
tomorrow morning is 6:47, followed by a sunset time of 4:43. After
tomorrow, the days will grow longer, and the nights shorter until the
summer solstice in June.

BIG TIME SNOW: At mid-morning, Denver was reporting 25 degrees with
heavy snow and a north wind gusting to 36 mph, making for near
blizzard conditions. At Fort Carson, Colorado, winds were gusting to
56 mph with heavy snow. Blizzard warnings are in effect for Northeast
Colorado, Southeast Wyoming, and West Nebraska.

J.B. VACATION: A reminder J.B. Elliott is on vacation this week; he
will return on Monday with his adventures of Miss Molly. I don't think
he has taken a week off in over a year, so it is time for a little R
and R.....

...An Active Weather Pattern Ahead...

We will squeeze in one more dry and mild day before wet weather
returns to Alabama. Temperatures should rise into the mid to upper 60s
this afternoon with some sunshine through thickening mid to high level
clouds. While we enjoy our dry and mild day, to the west a significant
storm system will push rain into Louisiana and Arkansas, with snow
from the mountains of New Mexico northward to South Dakota. This storm
system will move into Alabama tomorrow, and will bring the first real
beneficial rain in over one month.

A GOOD SOAKING: Rain will overspread the state from west to east
tomorrow, and by tomorrow evening the rain should be widespread
statewide. Wet weather continues into the day Friday, although the
rain should begin to diminish Friday afternoon. Rainfall amounts of
one to two inches are likely, but severe weather should not be a
problem since the air will remain fairly stable.

PRE-CHRISTMAS WEEKEND: Looks like we will squeeze in a dry day on
Saturday, although some clouds will linger during the day. At this
time the weather looks good for the Papajohns.com Bowl at Legion
Field; the temperature should be around 55 degrees at kickoff (12:00
Noon), rising into the upper 50s during the game. The sun should peak
out at times from behind the clouds. But, a new storm will organize in
the northern Gulf of Mexico Saturday night, and that promises to bring
more rain to the state on Sunday. Looks like another setup for one to
two inches of rain, and some thunder will probably be involved. We
might even have to watch for some flash flooding issues by Sunday
night as the system lifts into the southern part of Alabama.

We should note that storm will bring a chance of a White Christmas to
parts of Texas, Arkansas, western Kentucky, and southern Illinois and
Indiana.

CHRISTMAS DAY: The rain should move out of the state early Christmas
Day, and colder air rolls in. We are forecasting a high in the mid 40s
Monday afternoon, with some possibility of clearing by afternoon.
There is some hint that a few snow flurries will be possible Monday
night in the colder air, mainly over the far northern part of Alabama
and into Tennessee.

An active weather pattern will continue on past Christmas; another
storm system coming out of the Southwest U.S. will bring some risk of
rain in the December 29-30 time frame, but trying to nail down
specifics this far in advance is almost impossible.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: The coldest spot in the nation yesterday morning was
West Yellowstone, MT with 27 degrees below zero. Beaver, Alaska also
dropped to minus 27 degrees. Winter storm warnings are up today for
parts of Colorado, Wyoming, and the western parts of Kansas and
Nebraska. The national warm spot was in Florida, where Punta Gorda
reported a high of 83. Alabama's warmest spot was Brookley Field in
Mobile 79.

========================================

A CHANGE TO WETTER WEATHER IN THE WEEKS AHEAD: Our last big rain event
in Alabama was way back on November 15, and Birmingham's total for the
month of December is a measly 0.24". So, some rain is needed, and the
pattern is flipping to a wetter one in the coming weeks. Storm systems
will form over the southwest part of the nation, then moving out into
the heartland. This will bring a rain to Alabama and the Deep South
about every three to four days. The first round of wet weather will
begin Thursday afternoon, with the rain becoming widespread Thursday
night and Friday. Rainfall amounts of one to two inches are likely,
and some spots across the northern half of the state might exceed two
inches. Some thunder could be involved, but we don't expect any severe
weather since the air will be relatively stable. Temperatures will be
trending downward with the clouds and rain.

PRE-CHRISTMAS WEEKEND: Clouds will probably linger into much of the
day Saturday, but it looks like the best chance of rain during the day
will be over the southern half of the state. For the Papajohns.com
Bowl Saturday at Legion Field in Birmingham, we are now projecting a
mostly cloudy sky during the game, but the chance of rain looks small.
The kickoff temperature (at 12:00 Noon) should be close to 55 degrees,
rising into the upper 50s during the game.

To the west, another potent weather system will move northeast, and
will bring rain back to Alabama by Sunday afternoon. Looks like Sunday
night will feature a soaking rain for most all of Alabama, with
potential for over one inch for most communities. Back in the cold air
sector, a nice Christmas Eve snow event will break out from Central
Texas through East Oklahoma, North Arkansas, South Missouri, and into
the southern part of Illinois and Indiana. Places like Dallas, Tulsa,
and St. Louis have a pretty decent shot at a White Christmas this year
thanks to this storm system.

CHRISTMAS DAY: The rain should end across Alabama Christmas morning as
colder air moves into the state. It might be a day with temperatures
falling from the mid to upper 50s at daybreak into the low 40s by
afternoon. Even some hint that enough moisture might remain for a few
snow flurries Monday night or Tuesday, but no accumulation is expected
if flurries do develop.
Tuesday of next week looks pretty cold, with the northern part of the
state having a hard time getting out of the 30s. And, we should be
well down in the 20s by early Wednesday morning. Yet another storm
system seems poised to bring more rain toward the end of Christmas
week across the southern U.S.

ROAMING: Coldest place in Alaska this morning was Northway with minus
22 degrees. West Yellowstone, MT reported minus 24. Winter storm
warnings are up this evening from New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle
northward to South Dakota. A total of 1.30" of rain was recorded in
Miami during the last 24 hours.

ONE MORE DAY OF SPRING-LIKE WARMTH: If we reach our forecast high of
69 tomorrow, that will be 14 degrees above the "normal" high of 55,
and within six degrees of the record high for December 19 (75 set in
1984). Not bad for a mid-December day in Alabama. Some clouds will
move in tomorrow, but the weather will stay rain-free.

We should also note our weather has been very dry lately; our total
for the month of December is a mere 0.24", and our last really good
rain event was over one month ago, on November 15, when 1.01" was
recorded at the Birmingham International Airport. We remain dry
tomorrow and Wednesday, but that will change later in the week.

A LITTLE COOLER ON WEDNESDAY: A light northerly flow will continue on
Wednesday, dropping temperatures about ten degrees with a mix of sun
and clouds. The forecast high of 62 on Wednesday is still seven
degrees above normal, however.

RAIN RETURNS: A strong weather system lifting out of the Southwest
U.S. will bring rain back to Alabama later in the week. Looks like
rain will arrive during the day Thursday, and periods of rain will
continue Thursday night into Friday as the surface front takes it time
in moving through the state as it will be parallel to the upper air
winds. Sure looks like we might see some beneficial rain; most Alabama
communities should see between one and two inches from midday Thursday
through Friday evening. There might be some thunder involved, but no
severe weather is expected since the air should be cool and stable.

WEEKEND PEEK: At this point the weather Saturday looks mostly dry and
cool, although clouds could linger much of the day. For the
Papajohns.com Bowl at Legion Field... it looks like the kickoff
temperature at Noon will be around 56 degrees with only a small risk
of some light rain during the game. However, on Sunday, rain should
move back into the state as a surface low forms in the northwest Gulf
of Mexico.

CHRISTMAS DAY: As rain moves out of the state late Sunday night,
colder air will roll in here on Christmas Day. At the moment we expect
a cloudy and cold day, with highs only in the mid 40s along with a
chilly north breeze. There might even be enough moisture for a few
snow flurries over the Tennessee Valley of extreme North Alabama.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: A major snow event is expected tomorrow across
parts of Colorado, New Mexico, and the Texas panhandle; over a foot of
snow is expected in the San Juan Mountains of South Colorado. Freezing
rain could bring significant ice accumulations to parts of the Texas
Panhandle. Coldest spot in the nation this morning was West
Yellowstone, MT with 33 below zero. Coldest in Alaska was Chalkyitsik
(say that one three times in a row!) with 30 below.

VACATION TIME: J.B. Elliott is on vacation this week; he will return
for duty on Christmas Day, Monday December 25 along with the
adventures of Miss Molly.

...Another Nice Day...

I have to say, I am really liking this mid-December weather. You
can't ask for any nicer conditions for this time of year, and today is
going to be another example of our recent fine spate of weather.

SO HOW LONG WILL IT LAST? Well, in a word, today. Maybe tomorrow
also, but definitely today. Skies will be mostly sunny to partly
cloudy today after a little more patchy fog. Can you remember a time
when we have had more foggy days in a row? Kind of unusual. But
things will be changing. Overnight runs of the GFS are less bullish
on our Tuesday front, and give us a high in the 70s. But with lots if
uncertainty in my voice, I will continue to call for a front to settle
down into North Alabama during the day on Tuesday. Some areas,
especially northern sections will likely stay in the 60s. Skies will
be partly to mostly cloudy, but it should stay dry. Wednesday looks to
be variably cloudy with highs remaining in the 60s, but still well
above normal for this time of year.

A SOAKING RAIN? By Wednesday, low pressure will be over the Plains
states with a deep southerly fetch of Gulf moisture developing over
Alabama. Showers may break out as early as late Wednesday night, and
they should be around for sure Thursday morning. They will continue
to increase as a cold front slowly moves across the area late Thursday
night through Friday. The slow movement of the system may lead to
some healthy rainfall amounts for the state, but in actuality, we
could probably use them as long as they don't become excessive.
Rainfall totals may average in the 1.5-2.0 inch range, with some
locally higher amounts. The rain should end from northwest to
southeast on Friday. A few elevated thunderstorms could be involved,
but no severe weather is expected.

WEEKEND: Saturday looks good, with partly cloudy skies and mild
conditions for the PapaJohns.com bowl game at Legion Field. Highs
will top out near 60 degrees. The GFS now moves a rapidly
intensifying low across Alabama from the southwest on Christmas Eve
with lots of wind and rain. This would leave cool, cloudy, and breezy
conditions for Christmas Day with a little light rain.

ON THIS DATE IN 1932: It was the thirteenth season for the fledgling
National Football League. There were only eight teams, including many
you would not recognize today. After the season, the league office
scheduled the first playoff game in NFL history, pitting the Chicago
Bears against the Portsmouth Spartans. Chicago was in first place,
despite having six ties. The game had to be moved indoors into
Chicago Stadium because of bitterly cold temperatures and heavy snow
in the Windy City. The playing field had to be shortened to eighty
yards to fit in the stadium. The edge of the field ran right up to
the walls of the stadium floor. It looked more like today's arena
football than the NFL to which we are accustomed today. The Bears
won 9-0, capturing their third straight NFL Championship.
