...Epic Snowstorm...

An epic snowstorm is moving up the East Coast this afternoon. It has already spread record setting December snows from Tennessee to New York City. Roanoke VA measured 16 inches in 24 hours to set a new December record. The 12.3 inches that had fallen through noon at Reagan National Airport was also already a record for December. The snow was just arriving in New York City where the Big Apple was expecting a beautiful 10-15 inches by Sunday afternoon.

CLOUDY AND COLD: Northwesterly winds on the backside of the big low continued to pour cold air in Alabama and the South. Skies were cloudy north of a line from Demopolis to Montgomery to Lanett. Temperatures were in the lower 40s for the most part. These mostly cloudy and cold conditions will continue into the evening hours with some clearing toward morning. Overnight lows will be near freezing. Sunday will be Partly cloudy and cold with a high in the 40s. Monday and Tuesday will be mostly sunny with highs I the 50s after morning lows near or just below freezing.

WHITE CHRISTMAS: As my friend Joe Connally pointed out this morning, we weather forecasters are sometimes like Lucy from Peanuts when she holds the ball for Charlie Brown. When a potentially big or interesting weather event is coming, we start looking at the models about two weeks out and talking about possibilities. Of course, all anyone wants to hear is what they want to have happen. Like a White Christmas. The models have been all over the boards, but a very plausible scenario for the coming week is for rain and storms starting early Wednesday. They could be strong late in the day. Colder air will flow into Alabama on Thursday, potential setting the chance for some light snow on Friday. It's still too early to be specific, but we will be able to refine the forecast with time.

GOODBYE LAKE WIND ADVISORIES: The National Weather Service is putting an old favorite weather advisory out to pasture. More in today's AlabamaWX.com blog.

WEATHERBRAINS: We will look back on the remarkable career of long time Storm Prediction center Director Joe Schaefer as he approaches retirement at the end of the month. Todd Foisy from the National Weather Service Anchorage will be our first ever Guest Panelist. He will tell us about the television show they produce on Alaska Public television, Alaska Weather and Mount Redoubt. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe at iTunes. It's free!

ONE YEAR AGO: When the WSR-88 radar unit that services the National Weather Service in Reno failed around 4:30 a.m. PST during a huge Pacific storm, alarms sounded on the forecasters consoles. When personnel were dispatched to check out the equipment, which is located on Virginia Peak, they were shocked. A wind gust to 140 mph apparently crushed the radar dome on the powerful radar. Lee waves in the wind pattern downstream from the Sierra Mountains can produce intense winds like this. Winds were sustained at over 50 mph for several hours according to the anemometer record, and occasionally were sustained at near hurricane force. ...Big East Coast Storm...

I just returned from Washington, D.C., where a friend was complaining
about the snow they have already had. They will get some really heavy
snow today and tonight, perhaps as much as 17 inches by Sunday
morning. Some other friends are heading to New York City this
morning. They should get there before the heavy snow starts and get
to experience a beautiful Big Apple snow later today. New York City
will be on the borderline for really heavy snow, with the track of the
low perhaps far enough to the east to save the city from a blizzard.
Blizzard warnings are in effect for Long Island. Winter storm
warnings extend down into eastern Kentucky and western Virginia.

WE ARE IN AN ACTIVE WEATHER PATTERN: A deep trough over the eastern
U.S. means a cold and stormy pattern over the eastern half of the
company. The pattern will flatten out by Monday, only to reamplify to
our west by Tuesday night. This will spread rain and storms back into
Alabama by early Wednesday morning. Rain and storms will increase
through the day and as wind fields intensify Wednesday evening, severe
weather will be a real possibility. Instability levels will be the
questions, as is often the case with these winter events. Notice I
said winter events, as the winter solstice will occur Monday morning.
Rainfall could again be heavy, increasing our rainfall surplus even
further.

FOLLOWED BY A LITTLE SNOW? As a big bowling ball of an upper low sets
up to the north of Alabama on Christmas Eve, colder air will flow into
the state on strong northwesterly winds. There could be a little
light rain during the day, and the precipitation could change over to
light snow over North Alabama by Christmas. Snow flurries will be
likely through the day Friday. Could this produce the first White
Christmas in Alabama history? More about Alabama's White Christmas
history on AlabamaWX.com.

WEATHERBRAINS: This week's episode featured the Science and
Operations Officer from the National Weather Service Paducah. He
talked about the extraordinary winter storm that struck the Ohio
Valley this past January. E also talked about the positive outcomes
from the tragic Evansville tornado. He described his office's efforts
to help people in their County Warning Area get ready for potential
winter storms with a preparedness kit. This week, retiring Storm
Prediction Center Director Joe Schaefer will join us and guest
panelist Todd Foisy, of the Alaska Weather Show. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com
or subscribe on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: A short-lived but powerful tornado ripped
through the small town of Newton, Mississippi during the early
afternoon, hitting a Wal-Mart store. The tornado injured 60 people.
A tanker truck was blown off Interstate 20, causing a diesel spill
that closed the highway. A tornado watch and severe thunderstorm
warning was in effect for Newton when the tornado struck. The call to
action message in the warning stated that tornadoes can form quickly
from severe thunderstorms. Follow my weather history tweets on

...December Rolls Along...

ANOTHER SOAKING: We did not need another soaking. We have had rain galore, so what did we get—another soaking. Thanks to the Gulf of Mexico, which spawned a low-pressure area a couple of days ago, much of the southeast is experiencing foul weather. Here in Alabama, I feel sure that every square inch of soil got rain in the last 24 hours and most sections received over an inch. Two of the heavier amounts were reported by two of the 33/40 Skywatchers with 2.67 inches south of Chelsea and 2.50 at Oxford. Simmons Mountain in Springville got 1.47. Both Tuscaloosa and Birmingham over 1 inch.

All of this additional rain swelled the Birmingham total for the year to well over 69 inches. The long-term average for an entire year is about 54 inches.

THIS AFTERNOON: Much of the rain had ended. What was left was mainly over the extreme NE. The heavier rain had shifted into NE Georgia, South Carolina and Western North Carolina.

NOW WHAT FOR ALABAMA: Relatively quiet weather into the middle of next week. The old thermometer will not show us much warmth. We expect highs only in the 40s over the weekend and in the lower 50s early next week. Nights will be cold with our lowest temperature in the upper 20s Monday and Tuesday mornings. We do not expect hardly any precipitation. There is a slight chance of a little leftover light rain this evening. There could be a few snow flurries over North Alabama Saturday and a few of those could get as far south as the Birmingham area Saturday night. No problems. Cloudy gloomy weather on Saturday will surrender to some sunshine Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

WINTER STORM MOVES NORTHEAST: The same low-pressure area that gave Alabama this new soaker, will move NE up the Atlantic Seaboard. Heavy amounts of snow will fall tonight and Saturday morning in the Great Smoky Mountains, including Gatlinburg, and also in the Western North Carolina mountains including Asheville. A storm total of 5-10 inches of snow is possible for Gatlinburg and the Smokies. The Washington/Baltimore area will also be affected.

ROAMING THE COUNTRYSIDE: The same storm that gave us all the rain triggered a Tornado Watch for extreme South Florida today. The morning snow survey showed 43% of the lower 48 with a snow cover. Pointrock, New York 12 inches of snow in the last 24 hours. May Creek, California has 376 inches on the ground. Of course, they are in the high country. Whittier, Alaska, one of the favourite spots of one of our readers, has 15 inches of snow. Key West was the warmest in the U.S. yesterday with 84. Coldest this morning 25 below at Saranac Lake, New York and 40 below at Nikolai, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly continues to take her medicine with no questions asked after the majority owner started covering the pills with peanut butter. The little girl thinks she is getting a different treat. Goes to show you that dogs are not quite as smart as humans. Dealing with Molly, I had thought they were. Another vigorous ballgame at midnight. She gathered about 10 balls in the middle of the living area and started slinging them everywhere. She can sling one through the air and it bounces off the wall. She might make a good pitcher for the Yankees.

...A Raw, Cold, Wet Day...

GOOD DAY TO STAY INSIDE: Cold and wet weather headlines our forecast today as yet another storm system roars out of the Gulf of Mexico. Widespread rain will cover Alabama this morning, and a flash flood watch remains in effect for the southern counties of the state, where the ground is totally saturated from the heavy rain early in the week. Up this way, we figure most places will see around 1 inch of rain before it ends this afternoon or early tonight. And, it will be a cold rain; temperatures should hover in the 40 to 45 degree range much of the day with a chilly east wind.

OUR WEEKEND: The cold air stays in place. And, tomorrow, a disturbance rotating through the base of the upper trough over the eastern U.S. will bring some risk of scattered snow flurries to North Alabama. The best chance of these will be over the northern third of the state tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night. Moisture will be very limited, so they should not amount to much. Otherwise, tomorrow will be a cloudy and cold day with a high only in the mid 40s. The sky becomes partly sunny Sunday, but temperatures stay cold.

LOOKING FOR A SLEIGH RIDE: Lots of buzz about the potential pre-Christmas storm system next week. Confidence in a major storm is high, but there is no way to sort out details (like a rain-snow line) this far in advance. Simply no skill in dealing with a winter weather situation 5 to 7 days away. For North Alabama, it could be all rain, or rain changing to snow as cold air is pulled southward in the Wednesday-Thursday time frame. It is likely that a strip of heavy snow will fall north of the surface low that will potentially create some big travel headaches, but again we can't tell you now where that will be. Most likely over Tennessee, but we can't rule snow out over Alabama. We will have a much better idea on the specifics of the system late in the weekend.

One way or another, Christmas Day looks very cold with some risk snow flurries in the wake of the departing storm. Even a chance some North Alabama communities could remain below freezing all day. Santa will feel right at home.

LONG RANGE: If miss the snow with the pre-Christmas storm, it looks like there will be a similar storm system with another potential winter storm threat before New Year's Day as the cold, unsettled weather pattern continues.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: The storm system that will bring rain to Alabama today will bring potential for heavy snow to the western part of North Carolina and Southwest Virginia later today through tomorrow. Snow accumulations may reach 4 to 6 inches in the vicinity of Asheville and Hendersonville, North Carolina; up to 10 inches is possible east of I-126 along the Blue Ridge, and winter storm warnings are in effect for this region. The warmest cities in the nation yesterday were all in Florida, where Miami, Key West, Naples, and Marathon soared to a balmy 84 degrees.

...Rough and Tumble Weather...

DO NOT LOOK FOR A HEATWAVE: If we did not have our friend, the Gulf of Mexico, our job would be a whole lot easier trying to forecast the weather. However, I certainly appreciate the Gulf of Mexico because she gives Alabama a good climate and I do not know anyplace else that I would rather live.

That is enough about my opinion. We are in for some more changes. It includes some wet weather and maybe even some snow flurries over the weekend. Our friend, the Gulf of Mexico, was already sponsoring a low-pressure area over the NW part. It should move along the Alabama/NW Florida coast by tomorrow and then continue NE.

Unfortunately, the weather involved will not be too pleasant. Only a few days ago there was serious flash flooding down in South Alabama. A number of South Alabama counties are under a Flash Flood Watch again. It is not out of the question that 2 additional inches of rain could occur tonight and early tomorrow. Mobile has already received 12.70 inches of rain in about 2 weeks and almost 74 inches for the year.

The rain will also spread into North Alabama late tonight. Friday will be a rather miserable day with temperatures hanging in the mid 40s almost all day long and we could get about ½ inch of rain. The rain will be tapering off greatly by Saturday. There is still a slight chance of some light rain, but we also may see a few snow flurries on Saturday—not enough moisture to cause any problems. Finally, Sunday and Monday will be dry but cold with early morning temperatures as low as the mid and upper 20s.

SNOW FOR CHRISTMAS: It is possible, but that is 7 days away. By Christmas Eve, a low-pressure area will have moved northward through Mississippi into West Tennessee. That will furnish the moisture. By late on Christmas Eve, the temperature will be cold enough for the precipitation to be snow and some could linger into Christmas Day. However, the big question is the amount of moisture. There are rumors on the BLOG from some of the snow lovers that this looks like a Blizzard of '93 by comparison. Absolutely no chance of that. We will be able to zoon in on those possibilities in the next few days. It does look like cold weather for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

ROAMING THE GOOD OLD USA: That low in the Gulf will give the Mid-Atlantic States winter problems. A Winter Storm Watch is posted mainly for tomorrow for NW South Carolina and much of Western North Carolina. Asheville, for example, could get 4-6 inches of snow…47% of the lower 48 had a snow cover this morning. The cover is solid from Northern Kansas northward…Valdez, Alaska got 26 inches of new snow in the last 24 hours…there is 32 inches of snow on the ground at Never Summer, Colorado and 32 inches at Toney Grove Lake, Utah where we used to camp.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We can always depend on our readers for good suggestions about dogs. We got over 25 e-mails suggesting how to give Molly her pills. The majority owner complied and spread a tiny coating of peanut butter on the pills. Molly gobbled it up with no questions asked, including the fingers of the majority owner! We appreciate the interest in Miss Molly and we will write that book about her one of these days. She is completely normal now. An example of that: just before midnight, she gathered about 10 balls in the middle of the living area and started slinging them. The big hint was for me to play ball. I had no choice. Then it was time for a midnight walk. Life goes on. I feel sure that Molly will add 10 years to my life due to the forced exercise full speed around the track.

...Some Rain At Times Tomorrow...

COLD DECEMBER DAYS: A very active December weather pattern will keep
us on our toes for the rest of 2009. The next system in the Gulf of
Mexico wave train will spin up a surface low south of New Orleans
tonight, and promises to bring some rain to the state tonight and
tomorrow. The rain will begin initially over our coastal counties
tonight, then working northward, reaching the I-20 corridor sometime
after midnight. In advance of the rain, today will feature more clouds
than sun along with a high in the mid 40s.

Tomorrow looks like a raw, chilly day with clouds, some light rain at
times, and cool temperatures. We are expecting about 1/2 inch of rain
over the northern half of the state; the southern counties will see
the heaviest and most widespread rain.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: The rain will end Friday night, but clouds will
linger into Saturday as an upper trough passes overhead. There could
be enough moisture for a few scattered, light snow flurries Saturday,
especially for areas north of Birmingham, but most communities will be
dry both days. The weather stays cold, with afternoon highs generally
in the 40 to 45 degree range. Some places over the northern third of
the state will have a hard time getting out of the 30s.

CHRISTMAS WEEK: Confidence is high in a major pre-Christmas storm
system that will impact much of the nation, but we simply can't tell
you the specifics this far in advance. It will have the potential to
disrupt holiday travel, with heavy rain, heavy snow, and maybe even a
few strong thunderstorms involved. For first time in years we actually
have a chance of a White Christmas, but just a chance. It could bring
rain only to our state. We just don't know right now; we will be able
to be more specific about this tomorrow and over the weekend.
Certainly something to keep your eye on in coming days.

ODDS AND ENDS: Yesterday's official high in Birmingham was only 45
degrees, 11 degrees below the average high of 56. Our rain surplus for
the year is now at 16.89". Warmest place in the nation yesterday was
Miami, Florida with a balmy 87 degrees. Coldest place was Nuiqsut,
Alaska with 41 below zero. Right behind was Westby, Montana with 37
degrees below.

WEATHER CALL: Weather call is our new system that provides you and
your family a great way of receiving severe weather watches and
warnings. When a severe weather warning includes your location, you
will receive a phone call from Chief Meteorologist James Spann, 24
hours a day. You can also receive the warning by email with a detailed
map of the threat area. You may also use any of the email addresses to
set up the warning to be delivered by SMS text messaging to your cell
phone. Sign up on the web at abc3340.com.

...December Staying Active...

LOTS OF CHANGES AHEAD: Here we go with more of our roller coaster December weather. The next 5-7 days will see a number of changes, but overall the old thermometer is going to tell you to dress warmly every day.

Here is the sequence of events: some high clouds and colder tonight with the low near freezing. Clouds will increase on Thursday, especially late in the day and at night. There could even be a little rain reaching our area late Thursday night. Friday will be uncomfortable with little or no sunshine and about two hours of rain. In this part of Central Alabama, we estimate the amount to be about ½ inch.

The reason for that rain is our friend, the Gulf of Mexico. The cold front that moved through our area is down in the Central Gulf and a low-pressure area is already forming over the NW Gulf. The low will track toward the north and NE and the track of the low determines how much rain we get.

By Saturday morning, the low should be off the South Carolina coast. That will let colder air spill into our area. Saturday will be windy and cold with a slight chance of a little leftover rain. We could even see some brief snow flurries Saturday night. Finally, Sunday should be dry, but early morning lows will be in the mid to upper 20s with the colder temperatures in the NE Alabama valleys.

CHRISTMAS IS COMING: Everyone seems to want snow for Christmas. It is true that the morning weather models still support a significant low-pressure area moving across the SE on Christmas Eve with colder air pouring in behind the low. With some lingering precipitation on Christmas Day, it will be cold enough for that to change over to snow. There is one huge IF in all of this. Christmas Day is 9 days away and those weather models typically flip-flop several times during that length of time. So, there is no automatic promise of snow. We will, of course, keep our eyes open.

ROAMING: It was 86 at Lakeland and Key West, Florida yesterday for the warmest in the good old USA. It seems that South Florida has been the warmest part of the nation for well over a week, which is not unusual this time of year. The coldest in the lower 48 states this morning was 20 below zero at Crane Lake, Minnesota. The morning snow survey for the lower 48 shows that 48% of the country has a snow cover. The real heavy amounts are in the high country of the West where big cities, like Las Vegas and Los Angeles, really root for a big snow pack because melting snow in the spring is a big part of their municipal water supply. One of the heavier amounts this morning was 198 inches on the ground at Beartooth Lake in extreme NW Wyoming at 9,380 feet elevation.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We got about 15 e-mails suggesting how we can get Molly to take her medicine easier. Most of those mention putting a thin coating of peanut butter on the pills. Another person says that pet stores have little treats that are hollow that you simply slip the pill into it and away it goes. I had no idea. Molly only has one more dose of medicine to take. She is fully back to normal, which means I have to move very rapidly around the walking track and have more frequent ballgames. Life goes on.

...Sunshine Finally Returns...

A BRIGHTER DAY: I think most Alabamians will be very glad to see sunshine back in full force today as moist air for now has been replaced by dry, colder continental air. Most places will see a high today in the 46 to 50 degree range, followed by another clear and cold night tonight with a low near freezing early tomorrow. But, in this pattern expect more quick weather changes before the week is over.

OUR NEXT RAIN EVENT: Yet another storm system will form in the western Gulf of Mexico during the next 24 hours, and will spread clouds back into Alabama tomorrow afternoon. Rain is forecast to move into South Alabama tomorrow night, and the latest computer model output has trended farther north with the surface low, and accordingly we will have to insert a good chance of rain at times into our forecast statewide on Friday. It will be a rather raw day with a cold east wind and daytime temperatures failing to get out of the mid to upper 40s. And, like recent systems, the heaviest rain should be over the southern half of Alabama.

COLD WEEKEND: In the wake of the departing system, more cold air enters Alabama just in time for the weekend. We are expecting highs on Saturday and Sunday in the 40 to 45 degree range, and some places north of Birmingham could very well not get out of the 30s. There will be a thin layer of moisture hanging around, so we are forecasting more clouds than sun, and a few snow flurries are not out of the question, although we won't mention that in our formal forecast for now.

DREAMING OF A WHITE CHRISTMAS: Ole Bing might like the maps we see next week. Confidence is increasing that cold air will stay in place across the Deep South (and much of the nation) all next week, and with the active southern storm track we have to wonder if there could very well be some risk of snow flakes before Christmas Day. Long time readers here know there is very little skill in a specific weather forecast beyond seven days, so we can't be specific, but Santa Claus should right at home next week when he gets here. We will get into the details in our Friday discussions, but this might be our best chance at some snow around Christmas in a number of years. Remember, Birmingham has never had a "White Christmas" in the classic sense, and weather records here go back into the 1880s.

BIG TIME FLOODING: Rain totals of 5 to 10 inches were common across the southern third of Alabama during the past two days with widespread flooding issues. Some of the most serious flooding was over Escambia County, where parts of downtown Brewton and Flomaton were actually underwater yesterday morning. The on-ramps to I-65 were under water north of Bay Minette for a while yesterday, and numerous homes were flooded in Atmore, with some cars submerged. A number of shelters were opened for those that were flooded out of their homes across Escambia and northern Baldwin counties.

...Colder Air Moving In...

SUNSHINE NEXT TWO DAYS: I suppose that is welcome news to get a break from all the low clouds and fog and even the rain. Colder air was already spreading southward into Central Alabama this afternoon and it will push all the way to the coast by tomorrow morning. Extreme South Alabama will be especially glad to get a break from the rain, but it will not be an extended break. Some rain will return to South Alabama on Thursday and become more widespread Thursday night and Friday.

Here in North/Central Alabama, including the Tuscaloosa-Birmingham-Anniston corridor, clearing will take place later tonight and it looks like mostly sunshine for Wednesday. By daybreak, the old thermometer will be levelling off to around 32 and we may not get above 49 for Wednesday. I am undercutting model guidance by as much as 6 degrees. Another light freeze for Thursday morning and some more clouds move in Thursday night. We are getting mixed signals from the various weather models about the rain situation on Friday. We are not in doubt about South Alabama, but we are now calling for a slight chance of rain as far north as Birmingham on Friday and maybe even further northward. The heavier amounts will be down south. Finally, look for breezy and colder weather again on Saturday. We think most of the rain will be out of here by that time and we should drop into the upper 20s both Sunday and Monday mornings.

OUR FRIEND, THE GULF OF MEXICO: We consider her our friend because she plays a vital part giving Alabama a climate that is conducive to a lot of greenery and crop growing. However, she has been over ambitious lately about giving us too much rain. South Alabama had serious flood problems yesterday afternoon and overnight. Over the weekend, 7.24 inches of rain fell in the Mobile area and they have received more since. The Mobile total for the last two weeks is about one foot and around 73 inches for the year. Widespread flooding occurred yesterday afternoon and evening in places like Escambia, Baldwin and Covington Counties. A number of roads were under water and closed.

ROAMING: Bitter cold over the NW USA and the mercury dropped to 40 below zero at Jordan, Montana this morning. Over parts of Western Montana, this has been the coldest first half of December in 37 years. In Great Falls, December so far has been 21 degrees colder than average. That is unusual. The low in Alaska this morning was 30 below at Bettles. Serious flooding has been going on in the New Orleans area today. They have received 18 inches of rain in the last two weeks, including over 7 inches in the last 24 hours. A mix of rain and snow today in Copenhagen.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is composed of less than 9 pounds of fur, skin, bones, brains and the reset of what makes up a little puppy. If you measured intelligence by weight, she is amazing. The majority owner has been the pill officer giving Molly medicine twice a day. That little girl now suspects when it is time for her medicine and she runs and hides. She is like most little children. She does not like to take medicine, but she never turns down a Milkbone treat and she has developed a habit of petitioning for one more often than scheduled. Life goes on.

...Colder Air Invades Alabama...

COLD FRONT ARRIVES: A cold front will pass through North Alabama early this morning, pushing the rain out of the state by mid-morning, and bringing a surge of sharply colder air. This looks like a day with temperatures going the wrong way; we will begin the day in the 50s, but we should be in the mid to upper 40s by mid to late afternoon with a chill north wind. The clouds will exit the state tonight, and by daybreak tomorrow most places will wind up in the 29 to 33 degree range.

REST OF THE WEEK: We are expecting dry weather for this part of Alabama over the latter half of the week, with temperatures near average values for mid-December; this means highs in the 50s, with early morning lows not too far from the freezing mark. A storm system is forecast to form in the Gulf of Mexico Thursday, but it looks like the rain shield from that system will stay south of here, impacting only extreme South Alabama Thursday night and Friday. We could see some clouds around here, but for now we don't expect any significant chance of rain for the northern counties of Alabama.

CHILLY WEEKEND: In the wake of the Gulf storm, more cold air floods Alabama this weekend. We are projecting highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s Saturday and Sunday; some communities up in the Tennessee Valley might have a hard time getting out of the 30s despite a decent amount of sunshine both days.

CHRISTMAS WEEK: It is almost impossible to provide a decent day to day forecast beyond seven days, but global computer models have been fairly consistent in advertising a storm system that will impact Alabama around the middle of next week on Wednesday or Thursday with a good chance of rain, followed by a dry and cold Christmas Day. More than likely, this will change in coming days.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM CRITERIA CHANGING: For many years, a severe thunderstorm has been defined as one with winds of 58 mph (50 knots) or greater, or hail 3/4" in diameter (penny size) or larger. Beginning January 5, 2010, the hail criteria will be changed to one inch in diameter (quarter size). I am very hopeful this will cut down on the number of severe thunderstorm warnings, and make them more meaningful again. Seems like most folks don't pay too much attention to these warnings, but we have to remember that we have more straight line wind damage in Alabama than tornado damage.

NINE YEARS AGO TODAY: We were studying a major storm system that was approaching Alabama; it promised to bring some risk of severe thunderstorms to our state the following day, Saturday, December 16, 2000. That day turned out to be a red letter day in Alabama weather history, with a number of violent tornadoes, including an EF-4 that killed eleven people across the southern part of the city of Tuscaloosa. More on this event tomorrow...

...Colder Air Returns Tomorrow...

SHOWERS TONIGHT; COOLER TUESDAY: We have more changeable weather coming up. We have that almost all Decembers, especially as we get deeper into winter like we are now.

As we have mentioned hundreds of times, the Gulf of Mexico is our friend most of the time, because she is the main source of our abundant annual rain amount. Sometimes, though, she can be pesky and give us some storms, especially when she decides to send a hurricane our way.

Today showers and thunderstorms have been spreading inland from the Gulf. A warm front extending all the way from the Texas coast to the extreme south parts of Alabama and Georgia. That front was pushing north and spreading showers and thunderstorms northward ahead of the front. The storms were dumping locally heavy rain and the NWS issued a Flash Flood Warning for Barbour and Bullock Counties. Later they issued a Flash Flood Warning for Russell County and the Weather Service in Mobile posted a Flash Flood Warning for part of Choctaw and Washington Counties in SW Alabama. Some of those showers and storms will spread into the northern part of the state this evening.

Sunday was a fog-draped day and the visibility became even worse overnight. This was especially true on the ridges, which were in the clouds. Visibility dropped to a fraction of a mile. There was some improvement by this afternoon, but even then the ridges were obscured.

Thanks to Jason McCrory, Chief Deputy in the Hale County Sheriff Office, for letting us know that visibility was only 100 yards near Havana.

OUR WEEK AHEAD: A cold front was pushing SE through the middle of the country this afternoon. It will reach NW Alabama before daybreak and push SE all the way through the state by Tuesday night. We will still have some lingering showers part of Tuesday morning, but we are now anticipating mostly sunshine Wednesday, Thursday and possibly Friday.

Temperatures this afternoon reached the 50s and 60s. The highs for the rest of the week will be in the 50s every single day. Our coldest mornings will be Wednesday, Thursday and maybe Friday where it will be close to freezing.

50-CAR PILEUP: In most any part of the country you go, driving is very difficult on ice and snow covered streets. Over the weekend, there was a 50-car pileup at Shelton, Connecticut and 52 people were injured.

ROAMING: 87 at Ft. Pierce, Florida was the warm spot Sunday…cold places this morning included 28 below at Jordan, Montana and 35 below at Chandalar Lake, Alaska…the snow survey this morning showed 49% of the lower 48 with a snow cover. One of the bigger amounts was 217 inches on the Ben Lomond Trail in North Utah at about 6,000 feet elevation…good old Deadhorse, Alaska had a wind chill of 44 below.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: In response to a number of e-mails, Little Miss Molly seems to have fully recovered from being sick. She continues to develop new habits that put me under more and more of her control. She will come in my office, sit and glare at me, which means she wants to go out or play ball. When I get up to go to the living area, she will jump around behind me to make sure that I really do leave the office. She has one particular ball that rates much higher than the rest. She will chase it anywhere. Life goes on....

...More Rain...

Dense fog and low clouds cover much of Central Alabama this morning. The fog will be slow to burn off this morning, but as southerly winds increase during the day and temperatures rise through the 60s, visibilities should improve. A little drizzle or light showers could form during the morning, but most of the rain and storms should wait until later this afternoon and tonight.

MORE RAIN IN THE FORECAST: A wave of low pressure is trying to form along the Texas coast. It will move northeastward, accompanied by a slug of deep moisture borne out of the Pacific on southwesterly upper winds. This will spread rain back into Alabama this afternoon. Southerly surface winds will help push afternoon readings to near 70 degrees, which will be nice after our recent chilly conditions. Meanwhile, a cold front will be approaching from the northwest as a surface low moves northeastward out of Missouri. There could be some elevated thunderstorms, especially to the south of Birmingham as we head into the late afternoon and overnight hours. No severe weather is expected. The cold front will move through the area Monday night but the rain may linger into Tuesday morning. Rainfall amounts will average around one inch in the I-20 corridor, with lesser amounts to the north. To the south, two inches or more may fall over parts of South Alabama.

COLDER: Colder air will flow into Alabama behind the front. By Wednesday morning, most places should be near freezing. Temperatures on Wednesday will be in the lower 50s for the most part. This will be the rule through Friday, with morning lows around freezing, daytime sun and highs in the 50s.

WEEKEND AND BEYOND: A strong disturbance will be approaching by late Friday, but it will not have much to work with in the way of moisture. There will be increased clouds and a chance of a shower on Saturday, but the main effect of the disturbance's passing will be to deliver a reinforcing shot of cold air. Lows will be well into the 20s Sunday and Monday morning. It looks like the week of Christmas will be mainly cool and dry, although there are still occasional signs we could see a little snow Christmas Eve…

WEATHERBRAINS: This week's show is our winter storm preparedness show with Patrick Spoden from the National Weather Service in Paducah, Kentucky. He will recount the January ice storm that crippled much of Kentucky and talk about lessons learned. Did you know that the staff of the National Weather Service in Anchorage puts on a daily weather show on Alaskan Public Television? Our very own Todd Foisy is one of the presenters and will also talk about it on the 21st as our first ever Guest Panelist. The Guest WeatherBrain that night will be retiring SPC Director Joe Schaeffer. Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: A surprise snowstorm dumped as much as 10 inches of snow on parts of the Deep South. The storm was Mississippi's biggest December snowstorm of record. Four inches of snow fell across parts of Alabama. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter. I am @ wxhistorian.

...Gray and Gloomy...

The skies across Central Alabama are mostly gray on this December Sunday. The rain has ended for the most part except over Southeast Alabama. Skies will remain mostly cloudy this afternoon with highs around 60 degrees.

HEAVY RAINS OVER SOUTH ALABAMA OVERNIGHT: We did not receive as much rain as we expected yesterday and last night. A big reason for that was that a large shield of heavy rain to the south took up all of our moisture. It produced some impressive rains across South Alabama. In fact Doppler radar estimates indicate that possibly as much as 7-8 inches of rain fell over night from Wilcox down to Escambia County east northeastward to Russell and Barbour Counties. Even heavier amounts fell across Barbour County, where a flash flood warning was still in effect at mid-morning. Alston Keith recorded 4.65 inches at his hunting camp in Industry, Alabama, which is east of Georgiana in Butler County. He reports some minor flooding.

STORMS MONDAY/TUESDAY: An upper level disturbance in the southwesterly upper flow will be our next weather maker. It will spread rain back up into the state Monday. In Central Alabama, we could see during the day, but the main rain and storms will occur Monday night. It could be another heavy rain event for South Central Alabama. In the I-20 corridor, we expect around 1.25 inches of rain, with lesser amounts to the north and greater amounts to the south (as much as 2-3 inches or more). A developing low along the Gulf Coast will spread more rain across mainly South Alabama Tuesday night. Central Alabama may see a few showers.

REST OF THE WEEK: All of the rain should be gone by Wednesday morning with overnight lows in the lower 30s. Colder and dry conditions will prevail through the end of the week. Expect a few clouds Saturday as a reinforcing shot of cold air arrives.

METEOR SHOWER TONIGHT: The Geminid meteor shower will be at its peak tonight at 11 p.m. CST. The Geminids are generally reliable. You could expect to see 100 meteors per hour, if the clouds cooperate, that is. Skies are expected to be partly cloudy at best, so shooting star
watching may not be optimal. Look just north of east. The meteors will appear to be omcing from the constellation Gemini.

WEATHERBRAINS: Winter storm preparedness is the theme for Monday night's show. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains and you could win a Christmas present for your favorite young weatherfan. Monday night, we will give away a copy of Eric Pinder's new children's book: A Cat in the Clouds.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: A freak cold snap and snowstorm struck northern Mexico, leaving 12 people dead and the area paralyzed. It snowed in the city of Guadalajara for the first time since 1881, leaving amazed residents to gawk at the white stuff and make snowmen. Temperatures plunged to 5 degrees in Chihuahua. ...Warmer...

Saturday was a rather miserable December day across Central Alabama with light rain and temperatures hovering around 40 degrees. The rain will be moving out early this morning. The low pressure system responsible for the rain has moved up into Mississippi and weakened. It has left a milder airmass in place. Monday will be even milder still with some 70s across the area.

BRIEF BREAK IN THE RAIN: Skies will remain mostly cloudy across the area today with highs around 60 degrees. The clouds will break up tonight, but they will return quickly on Monday. There could be a few breaks in the clouds Monday morning, and this along with a southerly wind will allow the mercury to rise to near 70 degrees. A few showers could pop up during the day, but the main rain and storms will come late Monday afternoon and especially Monday night. The rain and storms will last into Tuesday morning. Some of the storms could be strong, but it doesn't look like we will have to put up with much in the way of severe weather.

COLDER: The cold front will put an end to the rain Tuesday morning. Temperatures will drop to near freezing by Wednesday morning as colder air spills into the state. This will signal the beginning of an extended cool period that may last much of the rest of the month. We should be dry and cool into the weekend.

NEXT WEEKEND: Saturday could feature a few clouds from a passing disturbance, but any precipitation should stay to the north. A reinforcing shot of colder air should follow in t he wake of that disturbance. The next rain chance could come around the 24th. Could that mean…

A WHITE CHRISTMAS: The GFS has been suggesting that we could see some wintry precipitation on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in the South. Wouldn't that be wonderful? There hasn't been a White Christmas in the traditional sense in Birmingham. In 1928, 5.5 inches of snow fell on the 22nd, but it was nearly completely gone by Christmas morning. There was a close call in 1985, when a dusting of snow fell in some areas. It's a forecast in voodooland…but fun to think about.

WEATHERBRAINS: Are you ready for the next big winter storm? Are you REALLY ready? Pat Spoden of the NWS Paducah says that they only through they were this past January when the horrific ice storm paralyzed Kentucky. He will talk about your emergency kit and things their office learned. Upcoming guests on WeatherBrains include Dr. Joe Schaefer, who will be retiring as Director of the Storm Prediction Center at the end of December; Accu-Weather's winter weather legend Joe Bastardi; BBC Weather Presenter Hannah Bayman and author David Laskin. Keep up with the show all week on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1977: Twenty nine people including fourteen University of Evansville basketball players and coach Bobby Watson were killed when their plane crashed shortly after takeoff in dense fog from the Evanville, Indiana Airport. Follow my weather history tweets @wxhistorian on Twitter.com.
