...Epic Snowstorm...

An epic snowstorm is moving up the East Coast this afternoon. It has already spread record setting December snows from Tennessee to New York City. Roanoke VA measured 16 inches in 24 hours to set a new December record. The 12.3 inches that had fallen through noon at Reagan National Airport was also already a record for December. The snow was just arriving in New York City where the Big Apple was expecting a beautiful 10-15 inches by Sunday afternoon.

CLOUDY AND COLD: Northwesterly winds on the backside of the big low continued to pour cold air in Alabama and the South. Skies were cloudy north of a line from Demopolis to Montgomery to Lanett. Temperatures were in the lower 40s for the most part. These mostly cloudy and cold conditions will continue into the evening hours with some clearing toward morning. Overnight lows will be near freezing. Sunday will be Partly cloudy and cold with a high in the 40s. Monday and Tuesday will be mostly sunny with highs I the 50s after morning lows near or just below freezing.

WHITE CHRISTMAS: As my friend Joe Connally pointed out this morning, we weather forecasters are sometimes like Lucy from Peanuts when she holds the ball for Charlie Brown. When a potentially big or interesting weather event is coming, we start looking at the models about two weeks out and talking about possibilities. Of course, all anyone wants to hear is what they want to have happen. Like a White Christmas. The models have been all over the boards, but a very plausible scenario for the coming week is for rain and storms starting early Wednesday. They could be strong late in the day. Colder air will flow into Alabama on Thursday, potential setting the chance for some light snow on Friday. It's still too early to be specific, but we will be able to refine the forecast with time.

GOODBYE LAKE WIND ADVISORIES: The National Weather Service is putting an old favorite weather advisory out to pasture. More in today's AlabamaWX.com blog.

WEATHERBRAINS: We will look back on the remarkable career of long time Storm Prediction center Director Joe Schaefer as he approaches retirement at the end of the month. Todd Foisy from the National Weather Service Anchorage will be our first ever Guest Panelist. He will tell us about the television show they produce on Alaska Public television, Alaska Weather and Mount Redoubt. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe at iTunes. It's free!

ONE YEAR AGO: When the WSR-88 radar unit that services the National Weather Service in Reno failed around 4:30 a.m. PST during a huge Pacific storm, alarms sounded on the forecasters consoles. When personnel were dispatched to check out the equipment, which is located on Virginia Peak, they were shocked. A wind gust to 140 mph apparently crushed the radar dome on the powerful radar. Lee waves in the wind pattern downstream from the Sierra Mountains can produce intense winds like this. Winds were sustained at over 50 mph for several hours according to the anemometer record, and occasionally were sustained at near hurricane force.
