...Colder Air Returns Tomorrow...
SHOWERS TONIGHT; COOLER TUESDAY: We have more changeable weather coming up. We have that almost all Decembers, especially as we get deeper into winter like we are now.
As we have mentioned hundreds of times, the Gulf of Mexico is our friend most of the time, because she is the main source of our abundant annual rain amount. Sometimes, though, she can be pesky and give us some storms, especially when she decides to send a hurricane our way.
Today showers and thunderstorms have been spreading inland from the Gulf. A warm front extending all the way from the Texas coast to the extreme south parts of Alabama and Georgia. That front was pushing north and spreading showers and thunderstorms northward ahead of the front. The storms were dumping locally heavy rain and the NWS issued a Flash Flood Warning for Barbour and Bullock Counties. Later they issued a Flash Flood Warning for Russell County and the Weather Service in Mobile posted a Flash Flood Warning for part of Choctaw and Washington Counties in SW Alabama. Some of those showers and storms will spread into the northern part of the state this evening.
Sunday was a fog-draped day and the visibility became even worse overnight. This was especially true on the ridges, which were in the clouds. Visibility dropped to a fraction of a mile. There was some improvement by this afternoon, but even then the ridges were obscured.
Thanks to Jason McCrory, Chief Deputy in the Hale County Sheriff Office, for letting us know that visibility was only 100 yards near Havana.
OUR WEEK AHEAD: A cold front was pushing SE through the middle of the country this afternoon. It will reach NW Alabama before daybreak and push SE all the way through the state by Tuesday night. We will still have some lingering showers part of Tuesday morning, but we are now anticipating mostly sunshine Wednesday, Thursday and possibly Friday.
Temperatures this afternoon reached the 50s and 60s. The highs for the rest of the week will be in the 50s every single day. Our coldest mornings will be Wednesday, Thursday and maybe Friday where it will be close to freezing.
50-CAR PILEUP: In most any part of the country you go, driving is very difficult on ice and snow covered streets. Over the weekend, there was a 50-car pileup at Shelton, Connecticut and 52 people were injured.
ROAMING: 87 at Ft. Pierce, Florida was the warm spot Sunday…cold places this morning included 28 below at Jordan, Montana and 35 below at Chandalar Lake, Alaska…the snow survey this morning showed 49% of the lower 48 with a snow cover. One of the bigger amounts was 217 inches on the Ben Lomond Trail in North Utah at about 6,000 feet elevation…good old Deadhorse, Alaska had a wind chill of 44 below.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: In response to a number of e-mails, Little Miss Molly seems to have fully recovered from being sick. She continues to develop new habits that put me under more and more of her control. She will come in my office, sit and glare at me, which means she wants to go out or play ball. When I get up to go to the living area, she will jump around behind me to make sure that I really do leave the office. She has one particular ball that rates much higher than the rest. She will chase it anywhere. Life goes on....
