...December Rolls Along...
ANOTHER SOAKING: We did not need another soaking. We have had rain galore, so what did we get—another soaking. Thanks to the Gulf of Mexico, which spawned a low-pressure area a couple of days ago, much of the southeast is experiencing foul weather. Here in Alabama, I feel sure that every square inch of soil got rain in the last 24 hours and most sections received over an inch. Two of the heavier amounts were reported by two of the 33/40 Skywatchers with 2.67 inches south of Chelsea and 2.50 at Oxford. Simmons Mountain in Springville got 1.47. Both Tuscaloosa and Birmingham over 1 inch.
All of this additional rain swelled the Birmingham total for the year to well over 69 inches. The long-term average for an entire year is about 54 inches.
THIS AFTERNOON: Much of the rain had ended. What was left was mainly over the extreme NE. The heavier rain had shifted into NE Georgia, South Carolina and Western North Carolina.
NOW WHAT FOR ALABAMA: Relatively quiet weather into the middle of next week. The old thermometer will not show us much warmth. We expect highs only in the 40s over the weekend and in the lower 50s early next week. Nights will be cold with our lowest temperature in the upper 20s Monday and Tuesday mornings. We do not expect hardly any precipitation. There is a slight chance of a little leftover light rain this evening. There could be a few snow flurries over North Alabama Saturday and a few of those could get as far south as the Birmingham area Saturday night. No problems. Cloudy gloomy weather on Saturday will surrender to some sunshine Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
WINTER STORM MOVES NORTHEAST: The same low-pressure area that gave Alabama this new soaker, will move NE up the Atlantic Seaboard. Heavy amounts of snow will fall tonight and Saturday morning in the Great Smoky Mountains, including Gatlinburg, and also in the Western North Carolina mountains including Asheville. A storm total of 5-10 inches of snow is possible for Gatlinburg and the Smokies. The Washington/Baltimore area will also be affected.
ROAMING THE COUNTRYSIDE: The same storm that gave us all the rain triggered a Tornado Watch for extreme South Florida today. The morning snow survey showed 43% of the lower 48 with a snow cover. Pointrock, New York 12 inches of snow in the last 24 hours. May Creek, California has 376 inches on the ground. Of course, they are in the high country. Whittier, Alaska, one of the favourite spots of one of our readers, has 15 inches of snow. Key West was the warmest in the U.S. yesterday with 84. Coldest this morning 25 below at Saranac Lake, New York and 40 below at Nikolai, Alaska.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly continues to take her medicine with no questions asked after the majority owner started covering the pills with peanut butter. The little girl thinks she is getting a different treat. Goes to show you that dogs are not quite as smart as humans. Dealing with Molly, I had thought they were. Another vigorous ballgame at midnight. She gathered about 10 balls in the middle of the living area and started slinging them everywhere. She can sling one through the air and it bounces off the wall. She might make a good pitcher for the Yankees.
