...Some Rain At Times Tomorrow...

COLD DECEMBER DAYS: A very active December weather pattern will keep
us on our toes for the rest of 2009. The next system in the Gulf of
Mexico wave train will spin up a surface low south of New Orleans
tonight, and promises to bring some rain to the state tonight and
tomorrow. The rain will begin initially over our coastal counties
tonight, then working northward, reaching the I-20 corridor sometime
after midnight. In advance of the rain, today will feature more clouds
than sun along with a high in the mid 40s.

Tomorrow looks like a raw, chilly day with clouds, some light rain at
times, and cool temperatures. We are expecting about 1/2 inch of rain
over the northern half of the state; the southern counties will see
the heaviest and most widespread rain.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: The rain will end Friday night, but clouds will
linger into Saturday as an upper trough passes overhead. There could
be enough moisture for a few scattered, light snow flurries Saturday,
especially for areas north of Birmingham, but most communities will be
dry both days. The weather stays cold, with afternoon highs generally
in the 40 to 45 degree range. Some places over the northern third of
the state will have a hard time getting out of the 30s.

CHRISTMAS WEEK: Confidence is high in a major pre-Christmas storm
system that will impact much of the nation, but we simply can't tell
you the specifics this far in advance. It will have the potential to
disrupt holiday travel, with heavy rain, heavy snow, and maybe even a
few strong thunderstorms involved. For first time in years we actually
have a chance of a White Christmas, but just a chance. It could bring
rain only to our state. We just don't know right now; we will be able
to be more specific about this tomorrow and over the weekend.
Certainly something to keep your eye on in coming days.

ODDS AND ENDS: Yesterday's official high in Birmingham was only 45
degrees, 11 degrees below the average high of 56. Our rain surplus for
the year is now at 16.89". Warmest place in the nation yesterday was
Miami, Florida with a balmy 87 degrees. Coldest place was Nuiqsut,
Alaska with 41 below zero. Right behind was Westby, Montana with 37
degrees below.

WEATHER CALL: Weather call is our new system that provides you and
your family a great way of receiving severe weather watches and
warnings. When a severe weather warning includes your location, you
will receive a phone call from Chief Meteorologist James Spann, 24
hours a day. You can also receive the warning by email with a detailed
map of the threat area. You may also use any of the email addresses to
set up the warning to be delivered by SMS text messaging to your cell
phone. Sign up on the web at abc3340.com.
