...Breezy Sunday...

GOOD MORNING! Most of the area is experiencing a cloudy start this
morning. The low clouds will burn off quickly this morning, giving way to
partly cloudy skies. Temperatures will rise quickly, reaching the upper 80s
in most locations by mid-afternoon. It will be quite windy today, with
southwesterly winds averaging 15-20 mph and occasionally gusting to over 25
mph. Lots of folks will be taking to area lakes today, but boaters should
exercise extreme caution.

MOVING TOWARD A NEW WEEK: Low clouds will form again tonight, giving us
another gray start on Monday. Once again, the clouds will evaporate by
mid-morning, leaving partly cloudy skies. Winds will be more westerly and
northwesterly tomorrow as a low pressure system slides to the east of
Alabama. Still, temperatures will climb into the middle and upper 80s in
most locations, just shy of record levels.

High pressure east of the Appalachians will drive an easterly wedge into
Alabama on Tuesday, cooling things a bit. Low pressure will give us chances
of showers and storms from Wednesday into the weekend.

SATURDAY SEVERE WEATHER: The nationwide tornado count continues to mount,
thanks to another active severe weather day over a concentrated area of the
Missouri River Valley. At least a dozen tornado reports had been received
by forecast deadline time, pushing the monthly total to over 215 already.

This number will likely go down by about 20%, but we have a lot of month to
go also. The highest number of tornadoes in any April is 276 in...you
guessed it...1974. We could easily pass that mark this year. Last year
there were 106 twisters in April.

SUNDAY SEVERE WEATHER: Severe weather is possible again on Sunday from
eastern Iowa and Missouri across Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky southeast into
Virginia and North Carolina. Tornadoes are likely once again, over a wide
area.

BUT I SWEAR I MAILED IT: Hundreds of federal tax returns being loaded into
a truck were blown away at Will Roger's Airport in Oklahoma City by a
violent thunderstorm. The 93 mph wind gust that was measured was the
strongest there in 24 years.

==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON: Our fine stretch of Spring weather continues this weekend
with warm temperature, sunny skies and dry conditions. Things will change
as we head into next week, but for now, let's enjoy it.

SUNNY SATURDAY: An upper low is over southwestern Colorado this morning,
but ahead of it, a large ridge of high pressure is centered over the
Mississippi Valley. This ridge is responsible for our current spate of nice
weather. Skies will be mostly sunny today with temperatures warming into
the middle and upper 80s. Moisture levels will continue a gradual increase
tonight and Sunday. This could lead to an increase in low clouds late
tonight into Sunday morning.

ANOTHER WARM ONE: But those clouds should but off quickly tomorrow morning,
giving way to a partly cloudy day. Temperatures tomorrow afternoon will
again average out in the middle to upper 80s. With increased moisture
levels in place, you have to start thinking about convection, but it appears
that storm development will be held in check by warm temperatures aloft. It
will be quite breezy tomorrow, however, and a lake wind advisory will be
likely. So anyone taking advantage of the nice weather to go boating will
want to be careful.

RECORD BIN: We actually are close to record readings right here in Alabama
It looks like our best chance for record highs will come on Monday, when
some areas will flirt with 90 degrees. The record high in Birmingham for
April 17th is 90 degrees. Many record lows were set this morning across the
middle of the country, but not record cold readings. Rather, morning lows
were the warmest ever recorded for the date across a wide area. There were
also a few record highs thrown in for good measure on Friday, including
Greenville/Spartanburg, SC, which saw 86F.

THE WEEK AHEAD: We already talked about Monday, when partly cloudy skies
and warm conditions will prevail. We have been expecting an easterly wedge
to push into Alabama on Tuesday, but that is iffy at this time. If it does,
it will lead to a cool down and some precipitation. A storm system over the
northern Plains will push a cold front our way at midweek. This system will
give us a chance of showers and storms starting late Wednesday night.

ON THIS DATE IN 1956: Around 3 p.m., an F4 tornado touched down just west
of Wylam in western Jefferson County. The murderous tornado tore to the
northeast, passing along the western and northern fringes of the City of
Birmingham. The tornado plowed through McDonald's Chapel and the Stacey
Hollow area. One hundred homes were destroyed in these two communities. The
twister continued through West Ensley and Sandusky, destroying another fifty
homes.
Homes were destroyed in the New Georgia community near Lewisburg. The
tornado passed just north of Tarrant City and near Ketona, finally lifting
near Chalkville. The twister killed twenty five along its twenty mile path.
Most of the deaths occurred in the Stacey Hollow and McDonalds Chapel
communities. A total of four hundred homes and buildings were destroyed.

...Record Warmth...

GOOD MORNING: Does the calendar say April? It feels more like late May or
June. Highs today across the area will be in the 80s, with many locations
in the upper 80s.

RECORD TERRITORY: We probably won't see any record highs today, but we will
be close. The record high for today in Birmingham is 88, so we will fall a
couple of degrees short with average highs around 86. Sunday will feature
highs about the same as today, so the record of 89 for the date will
probably not be in jeopardy. Now Monday and Tuesday will be different
stories. The record high for Monday and Tuesday is 90 degrees. It looks
like we could flirt with 90 both days.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE? Not today. Probably not tomorrow. Most likely not
Monday as a strong cap keeps convection at a minimum. There might be a
little activity on Tuesday, but it doesn't look significant. A cold front
will approach from the northwest on Wednesday.

RETURN OF A STORMY PATTERN? The approaching front will combine with a warm
and unstable airmass to produce a good chance of showers and storms on
Wednesday. We could deal with severe weather with this system. It will
likely be the beginning of a wetter and cooler period as the boundary stalls
out in our area.

SEVERE WEATHER TODAY: Another outbreak of severe weather is expected today
across the Central Plains and Upper Mississippi Valley. The greatest threat
for severe weather today is over eastern Nebraska, southwestern Iowa and
northwestern Missouri There could be tornadoes across this area,
especially early this evening.

ON THIS DATE IN 1927: Good Friday 1927 was marked by incredible rainfall
all along the Mississippi River. Greenville, MS, which would be the scene
of incredible flooding a few days later, receives 8.22 inches of rain in
just 24 hours. Worried civic leaders in Greenville meet to determine
whether the levee s around the town will hold. The rainstorm covered a huge
area. Downriver, New Orleans sets their record for rainfall in 24 hours
with 14.01 inches as well as the record for the state of Louisiana.

DRY, WARM EASTER WEEKEND: It has been nearly a full week since it
rained in Alabama and with brisk SW winds, it won't be too long until people
will be begging for rain. Not too long either until the woodlands dry out
considerably.

We do not foresee any rain until about the middle of next week. Only
possible exception would be the risk of just a few showers on Tuesday as a
week cold front pushes down from the NE and slows or stalls in Central
Alabama. On Wednesday, that stalled front will head back northward as a warm
front. All of this means that our best chance of some showers and
thunderstorms will come in the Wednesday-Thursday timeframe of next week.
Too early to ascertain if we will have a brush with severe weather, but
there are slight indications.

Meanwhile, since the warm dry weather is entrenched, let's enjoy it
for the duration. High temperatures will continue running more than 10
degrees above normal for mid-April. We expect highs to persist in the mid
80s.

EASTER SUNDAY: More sun than clouds. Very warm for mid April with
highs around 85 and it should be around 62 if you are going to a sunrise
service. Brisk SW winds of 10-20 mph.

ANOTHER TORNADO OUTBREAK: It happened overnight mainly in Eastern
Iowa. There was considerable damage in Iowa City, which is where Iowa State
University is located. There was widespread damage in the downtown area and
a number of people were trapped. The downtown courthouse was unroofed.
Around 9 o'clock last night, three tornadoes were on the ground at the same
time on the east side of Muscatine, Iowa. One person was killed in a mobile
home. A moderate risk of severe weather is posted for the rest of today and
tonight, including places like Louisville, Cincinnati and Evansville,
Indiana.

FRIDAY NOTES; 100 at Castolon, Texas and Medicine Lodge, Kansas was
the hottest in the USA yesterday...Medicine Lodge is an interesting place
name. We have been getting reports from them for years. Mind you, that 100
degrees was accompanied by strong SW winds that will bake you in a hurry...a
paradox-it was 99 in Coldwater, Kansas...just to cool you off, it was 71
below zero with blowing stow at Vostok, Antarctica.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: At 5:46 this morning, I was sleeping so
soundly. I may have even been dreaming about pop tarts and a fresh pot of
coffee. A sudden thud. Little Miss Molly had become airborne and landed in
the bed beside me. She turned upside down which meant she was ready for a
tummy rub and that she had other plans for me. Always a little drama along
the walking track. The minute we stepped onto the track there was a loud
objection from a female, lady, woman Mockingbird. (Can you tell I used to
listen to Justin Wilson?) The mama bird was fussing at us loudly and kept
diving toward us. A bit later, as we passed under a sassafras tree, her
hubby joined her as reinforcements. Molly looked insulted. She thinks she
owns the track. We moved on but the mama bird followed us for 100 yards
still complaining loudly. Then we saw Tommie, another nice lady that loves
Molly dearly. Molly got another long tummy rub and she quickly forgot about
the pesky birds.

...April Heat Wave...

If we reach our forecast high of 86 today, that is exactly 12 degrees above
normal for April 14, and within three degrees of the record high for today
(89 set in 1981). This summer-like weather will continue right on through
the Easter weekend, with a good supply of sunshine each day.

Storm systems will be deflected well to the north and west of Alabama for
the next five days or so, and the dry spell will continue. Today will be the
6th day in a row without a drop of rain for most Alabama communities.

NEXT WEEK: Our weather will stay warm and dry on Monday and Tuesday, but a
cold front is forecast to pass through on Wednesday, bringing a chance of
showers and storms to the state followed by a chance of cooler temperatures.

LONG RANGE: Despite the fact that this is the core of the spring severe
weather season in Alabama, long range model suggests no major severe weather
or heavy rain threat for the rest of the month of April. But, remember May
is a big part of the tornado season, and there is plenty of time for a
pattern change.

THINKING TROPICAL: Hurricane season begins in six weeks, on June 1. The
first tropical cyclone names this year are Alberto, Beryl, Chris, and Debby.
A buoy about 75 miles south of the Alabama coast reported a water
temperature of 73 degrees last night; generally speaking the water has to
warm to near 80 degrees or warmer for tropical storms and hurricanes to
form.

IOWA TWISTERS: Storm spotters reported a large tornado on the ground near
Muscatine, Iowa last night, and some damage was reported to buildings and
other structures. Tornado damage was also reported at the University of Iowa
at Iowa City.

ROCKING ALONG WITH SUNSHINE: I guess this is the type weather that
makes you want to sit on the porch in a rocking chair drinking coffee (or
Buffalo Rock)and reading the paper. We see no change in this pattern for the
next several days. However, one of our main weather models introduces some
showers about next Wednesday.

High temperatures will edge upwards each day. For the most part,
here in Central Alabama, they will be between 84 and 86 for the next 4 or 5
days. Some of the credit for our nice weather can be given to a high
pressure area that is hanging tough along the Gulf Coast and over the North
Gulf of Mexico. This is detouring the main storm track well to the north of
Alabama.

EASTER SUNDAY: Still looks dry and with more sun than clouds. The
high will be about 85 and for those attending sunrise services, it should be
near 63. Sunrise on Easter Sunday is around 6:16.

SUMMER HAZE IN ALABAMA: Alston Keith, one of our daily readers,
asked what causes so much summer haze in Alabama? The answer is because the
atmosphere becomes more sluggish during the summer. The track of the main
weather systems are far to the north. The sluggish air here allows
pollutants to build up. There are few, if any, cold fronts to sweep out the
haze. The haze is by no means limited to Alabama. On many summer mornings,
it may be hazy all the way out into Texas and up into the Midwest and NE.
Winds off the Atlantic don't help.

FIRST 100-DEGREE HEAT? A very hot 102 degrees in Presidio, Texas
was the national high Wednesday. I believe (but cannot be certain) that this
was the first official temperature of 100 or higher in the USA so far this
year...22 in Bryce Canyon, Utah was the coldest in the lower 48 this
morning, 17 below was the coldest in Alaska at Atqasuk...there were no
severe thunderstorm or tornado warnings in the country at noon, but places
like Illinois, Indiana and parts of Ohio, Wisconsin and Iowa are under a
slight risk of severe weather later today.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: If I ever get around to writing a book
about Molly, one title I am considering is, "Good Golly Miss Molly." I
believe Little Miss Molly has bounced back completely from the weekend of
severe weather. She has not tried to hide under the bed at all in the last
24 hours. Part of that is due to the extra attention she is getting from us.
Sure did have a nice walk with her this morning...she is paying more and
more attention to birds. After a recent grass cutting of the common area
along the walking track, a lot of birds are hopping around in the grass in
search of worms, bugs-you name it. Miss Molly jerks me in all directions
trying to chase the birds with absolutely no chance of success. Dumb dog.
There was a wasp or yellow jacket on our patio screen when we walked out
this morning. I jerked Molly's leash just in time to keep her from scooping
it. I have to be constantly on the alert to protect that little girl. I
suppose she is worth it. Don't know what I would do without her. Life goes
on but I will be glad when October gets here.

FOCUS ON EASTER SUNDAY: Still looks dry. We do not have any rain in
our forecast all the way through the weekend. If you are planning to attend
Easter sunrise services, the temperature should be around 60 or slightly
above at sunrise. Here in Central Alabama, the official time of sunrise for
Easter Sunday will be 6:16 CDT. That, of course, can vary by a few minutes
depending on whether you live on a hill that is exposed to the sun earlier
or down in a deep valley. The sunrise/sunset tables are based on a level
plane for a given latitude and longitude.

THE REST OF THE WEATHER: As mentioned, we think we will stay dry on
through the weekend. Most days will feature predominant sunshine, but there
are always little minor disturbances that can cause some temporary high
level cloudiness like we have seen today. By Friday and on through the
weekend, the old thermometer will reach the mid 80s every single day.

IN SEARCH OF COLD WEATHER: Not a great deal of it around anymore,
especially as compared to a few weeks ago. Even in Alaska, the coldest we
could find this morning was 9 below zero at Point Lay. Down here where 48
states rub up against each other, the low was 20 in Stanley, Idaho. Wish you
could see that town. It is nestled along the Salmon River in the Sawtooth
Mountains. The mountain peaks are real jagged like the edge of a saw.
Strange thing happened once when we pulled in to a riverside campsite. The
space we had chosen was totally littered with a newspaper. I started
scooping up the pages and lo and behold, it was the previous Sunday's
edition of the Birmingham News...last time I was there, I photographed a
street sign in the heart of the
town that said, "Population 35, Speed Limit 35." My kind of place.

SMALL TOWNS AND TORNADOES: They don't have much of a chance
if a strong tornado hits them. There have been some cases in the USA when a
small town was totally wiped off the map and never rebuilt. Saragosa, Texas
was almost totally wiped out several years ago. On this date in 1945,
Antlers, Oklahoma was nearly obliterated by a massive F5 which killed 69
people. There was very little in the newspapers about that disaster because
it was overshadowed by the death of President Franklin Roosevelt at the
time...here in Alabama, 2/3 of Hackleburg was destroyed by an F4 tornado at
1:30 am on this date in 1943. Four persons were killed and 60 injured.
Residents reported being awakened by an unscheduled freight train.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Still trying to make it up to Little
Miss Molly for abandoning her during last weekend's long severe weather
event. After hiding under the bed most of Saturday, she has returned to
normal. Translation: a ballgame every time I walk through the living area.
Some great walks over the last couple of days. She always stops in the
backyard of Glenn and Patty's house awaiting a tummy rub from them. She
stops again where Sue and Lisa live with Bridgett (another shih-tzu) at the
far end of the walking track. I almost never get her back home, but I don't
mind. Even strangers we meet on the walking track stop and pet Little Miss
Molly because she is so effervescent. Life goes on and it is most enjoyable
with my little 9-pound goodwill ambassador!

...Most Places Stay Dry...

A fast moving weather disturbance will move across the Great Lakes region
this morning, and most of the associated shower activity will remain well to
the north of Alabama. We will have a few scattered clouds around here today,
but a decent amount of sunshine still gets though and temperatures will
reach the mid to upper 70s this afternoon, about 5 degrees above normal.

Dry weather with a warming trend will continue to headline our forecast for
the rest of the week and into the weekend. We will forecast a good supply of
sunshine both tomorrow and Friday with afternoon temperatures reaching or
exceeding 80 on both days.

EASTER WEEKEND: Temperatures this weekend should be about ten degrees above
normal, meaning highs in the mid 80s. The sky should be partly sunny both
Saturday and Sunday, and for the moment we don't see any significant chance
of rain.

A few showers could show up early next week on Monday or Tuesday, it doesn't
look like a big rain event. In fact the longer range computer model data
really doesn't suggest any big chance of severe weather or really heavy rain
for the next 10 to 15 days across Alabama.

TORNADO FATALITY: One woman seriously injured from severe weather in Alabama
this Friday night died yesterday at a Tupelo, MS hospital. This is the first
tornado fatality in Alabama from that big tornado outbreak.

RAIN UPDATE: Birmingham's rain total for the year is 17.58", a surplus of
3.18".

EXTREMES: The hottest place in the nation yesterday was Wink, Texas with 93
degrees. The coldest place yesterday morning was in New Hampshire, where
Berlin dropped to 20 degrees.

QUIET AND PEACEFUL: I believe you could see for a distance of 70 or
75 miles across Alabama today if it were not for the curvature of the earth.
It won't be long until mid summer when haze will be around almost every day
and on some days you won't even be able to see 7 miles.

I really enjoy the cool early mornings also. There is a place in NE
Etowah County that is up on top of Sand Mountain, but still in a slight
valley atop the mountain. ABC 33/40 weather watcher, Vic Bell, reported a
low of 38 this morning. It was 37 in DeSoto State Park, otherwise most
places had 40s.

Our extended period without storms is also very welcome. Clean-up
operations continue in numerous locations across the state. Sure would like
to know how many large trees were uprooted Friday night and early Saturday.
I bet the number would amaze you. So far the NWS has classified 16 of the
storms
as tornadoes. Fortunately, there were no major tornadoes as all 16 were
rated F0 or F1.

HOW LONG WILL IT LAST? The dry weather, that is. We believe we can
get by through the weekend with little or no rain. There is a slight hint of
a few showers by later Sunday. We did not include them in the forecast until
we get more evidence. It is going to get warmer in the afternoons and we
expect mid 80s by Friday and Saturday.

IN SEARCH OF BAD WEATHER: Very difficult to come by today anywhere
in the USA. Not a single severe thunderstorm or tornado warning has been
issued anywhere in the country in the last 24 hours. There could be a few
later today near places like Omaha. This does not count a serious flood
situation in Northern California. As much as 4 inches of additional rain may
fall there in the next 24 hours as a front moves inland from the Pacific
Ocean and stalls. There is even danger of some levee breaks. A state of
emergency has been declared in at least one California county...a few more
notes: 20 in Berlin, New Hampshire was the coldest in the lower 48 this
morning...10 below zero was the coldest in all of Alaska.

BIRTH OF A NATIONAL WEATHER WIRE: It happened on Palm Sunday in
1965 when 51 tornadoes hit six states with 256 fatalities. Culver, Indiana
was devastated. Another killer tornado stayed on the ground for 92 miles in
Michigan killing 44 people. This resulted in Congress making funds available
for statewide weather teletype circuits. Until that time, most weather
offices depended on the Associated Press or United Press International (UPI)
to distribute warnings and forecasts.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly and I were happy to
see that the Old Crow Motel survived the weekend storms even though there
was quite a bit of wind damage in areas not too far away. One of these days
we are going to lose the old lady. All of her rooms (er, limbs) are on the
north side of the tree and most of them over halfway up the tree. Molly and
I named it the Old Crow Motel on Molly's very first walk with me three and a
half years ago. During that early morning walk around daybreak, two old
crows were perched high in the tree in what sounded like a vicious argument.
Don't know if they were having a family fight or deciding to divorce. I will
never forget my little pal, Molly, plopping down in the dew-covered grass
and looking up at those crows and slowly wagging her little tail like she
wanted to go for them. Tiny dog-big imagination. Life goes on even with
Daylight Saving Time.

...Severe Clear Continues...

There is a good chance Alabama stays dry through the Easter weekend. One
disturbance will pass north of the state tomorrow, but it looks like most of
the rain will stay north of the Ohio River, and just a few scattered clouds
are expected down this way. High temperatures both today and tomorrow
should reach the upper 70s.

The mercury should soar into the low 80s by Thursday and Friday as the
warming trend continues. Both days will be dry with just a few scattered
clouds from time to time.

EASTER WEEKEND: Looks like a great morning for Easter sunrise services; we
should be close to 60 degrees early Sunday with a mostly clear sky.
Afternoon temperatures will be in the 82 to 85 degree range both Saturday
and Sunday with sunshine through scattered clouds.

At this point it looks like the next chance of showers will come around
Monday of next week, but for the moment it doesn't look like a major rain
event for the Deep South.

LAST FRIDAY: Using storm reports from the National Weather Service in both
Birmingham and Huntsville, 16 tornado touchdowns have been confirmed so far
in Alabama; 8 rated F1 and the other 8 rated F0. The F1 tornadoes touched
down in or near Gardendale, Hamilton, Haleyville, Ohatchee, Cullman,
Danville, Tuscumbia, and Leighton. One person remains in critical condition
from injuries suffered in the Marion County tornado; a woman ran into a tree
that was down blocking a road between Hamilton and Hackleburg. In addition
to the tornadoes, damaging straight line winds were reported in 15 counties.

CALIFORNIA FLOODS: Seven north and central California counties are under a
stare of emergency due to floods and heavy rain.

SHIFTING OUR GEARS: Weather people have to be very adjustable. We
are at the mercy of Mother Nature and have to shift our pace and focus as
weather conditions change. What a difference today as compared to our big
weather threat just passed. And, what a relief that we had no fatalities in
Alabama. We certainly feel for the people in Tennessee. So far, 38 people
have been killed in the USA in the first nine days of April.

Our change in weather has to be most welcomed by almost everyone in
the state. We know everyone was sitting on needles, pins and thumbtacks
with anxiety Friday and Friday night. Now we can totally relax because it
appears we will not have another threat of severe weather all week. In fact,
the Storm Prediction Center does not mention any threat across the lower 48
all week.

Here in Alabama, lots of sunshine for the next several days. We
don't mention rain all the way through the weekend. Pleasantly cool nights
and mild to warm afternoons. Timely, also, because lots of folks are
involved in cleanup activities. I visited the South Roebuck area of NE
Birmingham where dozens of large trees were uprooted in the wee morning
hours Sunday. Unfortunately a number of those trees fell across homes. It
was a straight-line wind event.

INCOMPLETE SENTENCES: Less than 8% of the USA covered by snow today
(not counting Alaska)...compare that to 26% last month...241 inches on the
ground at Leavitt Lake in the Sierra Nevada Mountains...lots of people visit
Crater Lake...168 inches on the ground at the National Park Headquarters
this morning...93 in Fort Lauderdale Sunday...19 in Saranac Lake, N.Y., this
morning...33 was one of the lowest temperatures in Alabama...8 below at
Barrow and Point Lay, Alaska...probably feels like spring to those folks.

GONE FOREVER: These tropical storm/hurricane names from the 2005
season are gone forever, never to be used again: Dennis, Katrina, Rita,
Stan, Wilma. Normally those names would have been used again in 2011.
Instead, we will see Don, Katia, Rina, Sean, and Whitney...the first five
names for this season: Alberto, Beryl, Chris, Debby, Ernesto.sure hope we
can avoid the Greek Alphabet!

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Never seen Little Miss Molly so scared.
I was doing radio broadcasts from the ABC 33/40 Weather Office when the
storms came through. My wife wrapped Molly in a blanket and sat in our small
"safe-room," but the loud pounding thunder and the hail blowing against the
house was too much. She was shaking from fear. She stayed under the bed much
of Saturday, still afraid. But when I came home from 33/40 early Saturday
morning, she was told "daddy's home"...she came roaring out from under the
bed like a rocket, forgetting about being scared, because she wanted to see
me so bad. Even though I had been working for 25 hours in a row, under
pressure, and was groggy, sleepy, exhausted, hungry, thirsty-it made me perk
up right away. That little girl can do magic with me. I love the little
nine-pound creature. She knows me like a book and I am afraid she can get
her way with me far too often. So what? She won't be here forever. Life goes
on.

...Nice Week Ahead...

GOOD MORNING: Last night was another great night to sleep with the windows
open. All too soon, these peaceful, cool nights will be replaced by the hum
of air conditioning units and we will long for Spring once again...

THE SUNDAY THAT WAS: Yesterday was a beautiful day across Alabama.
Temperatures looked like they were going to have a hard time reaching 70
degrees, but the mercury made a furious comeback in the second half and most
reporting stations across Central Alabama barely made it.

FAIR UNTIL MIDWEEK: Today should be a carbon copy of yesterday, just a few
degrees warmer, thanks mainly to winds shifting around to the southeast.
Ditto for Tuesday, just add a couple of more degrees. Clouds should be
conspicuous by the absence until Wednesday morning.

MIDWEEK AND BEYOND: We will continue with this same theme of rather fine
spring like weather, despite a series of disturbances that will be passing
to the north of Alabama. They may bring a few periods of cloudiness at
times, but things should remain dry.

No organized precipitation is expected through the weekend, but a dying cold
front will be just to our north, so a stray shower is possible. It looks
like the next significant rain chance will come on Monday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1979: Three very intense thunderstorms produced a
devastating outbreak of killer tornadoes and large hail in the Red River
Valley of North Texas and southern Oklahoma, including the Wichita Falls and
Vernon areas. The three major tornadoes were all giants, each producing
damage paths that were at least 35 miles long. A fourth thunderstorm
produced a small and brief tornado near Iowa Park, in Wichita County. The
biggest tornado of the day occurred at Wichita Falls, Texas. The final
tragic toll: 56 dead and 1,916 injured. Forty of the fatalities occurred in
Wichita Falls, in spite of excellent warnings.

GOOD AFTERNOON! It is nice to not be talking about severe weather in our
afternoon edition today. Weather across the country is quiet for the most
part. The only exception is South Florida, where our cold front is edging
into some rather unstable air. Storms could become severe there this
afternoon, with the main threat coming from high winds and large hail.

CLOSER TO HOME: The only thing severe in our forecast are the clear skies.
J.B. likes to call it a good case of "severe clear." Just step outside and
you will see what we are talking about. Skies are about as blue as you will
ever see here in Alabama. Mostly clear skies will be with us through
Tuesday, it appears.

Advection of cool air into Alabama is keeping a bright Spring sun in check
this afternoon. Temperatures will remain in the 60s in most locations, I
believe.

Tonight, lows should be in the forties for the most part. Might see a
couple of 30s, but 40s should be the norm. Under mostly sunny skies
tomorrow, afternoon readings will climb to around 73-74 degrees on average,
and highs on Tuesday will be a couple of degrees warmer than that as our
winds become more southeasterly.

A weakening cold front will try to edge into the area Wednesday, but the
main effect will be increased clouds. Showers should stay to our north.
Thursday will see that boundary hung up to our north, and while we can't
rule out the chance of a shower on Thursday, they again will likely stay
north of us here in Central Alabama.

NEXT WEEKEND: High pressure will be over the western Atlantic, keeping a
protective shield over us here in Alabama. A deep low pressure system is
expected to be over the northern Plains states. It will try to send a cold
front our way, but it won't stand a chance of getting here. It looks like
that there will be no significant precipitation through much of Easter
Sunday if this pattern holds.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: A special happy birthday today to hook echoes. On this
date in 1953, Glenn Stout, a technician at the Illinois State Water Survey
in Champagne, IL was testing a rebuilt weather radar unit. As Stout and his
associates studied the thunderstorm, they noticed that its radar echo had
taken on an unusual shape. It appeared to develop a tail, that resembled a
hook.

They would learn later that at the time the "hook echo" developed, the
thunderstorm was producing a tornado. Later analysis of the film taken
during the test revealed that the hook shaped echo was closely associated
with the tornado. . It was hypothesized that the hook was associated with
the tornado that the thunderstorm produced. Analysis of radar film from a
the tornado that devastated Waco, Texas and the deadly Worcester,
Massachusetts tornado all indicated the same hook formation. It became
apparent that tornadoes did display a unique echo and that communities could
be warned when the echo appeared. Radar indications of hook echoes would
become one of the most important tools of meteorologists in issuing tornado
warnings with the WSR-57 radar network. We still use the technique today..

...Refreshing!...

GOOD MORNING! Greetings on this refreshing Sunday morning! Temperatures
are in the 40s across most of the area.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Today will be a picture perfect spring day for Alabama.
Temperatures will warm into the lower 70s on the strength of a warm sun,
despite the presence of a cool north wind. Temperatures tonight should run
about the same as last night. I could imagine a few readings in the 30s at
the normally colder locations. Skies will be clear.

THE WEEK AHEAD: High pressure will be the dominant theme in Alabama's
weather for much of the week ahead. Starting out over the Ohio Valley, the
high will gradually translate northeastward. Ridging down into the
Southeast, this will give us fair, fine weather through Tuesday.
Temperatures will be almost dead on normal. By Wednesday, a weather system
moving through the Ohio Valley might kick off a few showers, but the chances
look very small. By
Thursday, high pressure will set up shop over the Southeast, giving us more
fine weather, and temperatures will warm into the lower 80s for daytime
highs by the end of the week.

EASTER PREVIEW: By the weekend, a powerful low pressure system will be
moving out onto the northern Plains states. At face value, one would think
there would be another massive severe weather outbreak in the Plains and
Midwest for the weekend. But good news: the Gulf of Mexico will be CLOSED
for business. High pressure over the northern Gulf will prevent moisture
from flowing north If this situation materializes, we may escape with very
little in the way of rain or storms for Easter. Hooray!

ON THIS DATE IN 1927: The headlines on the New York Times told an ominous
story of a major flood on the Mississippi River. The Mississippi River and
several other major Midwestern rivers were in flood. And the persistent
rains that had been falling since the previous autumn were still falling.
Work on levees was frantic all along the Mississippi River. In several
locations, saboteurs were killed as they tried to dynamite levees up or down
river from their communities in an attempt to relieve pressure on their own
town's levees. The 1927 Mississippi River Flood would be the most
destructive flood ever in the history of the United States.
