...Typical Summer Sunday...

Saturday started off nice, with a wide band of showers and thunderstorms across North Central Alabama. The majority of the rainfall amounts were light, less than one quarter of an inch. The Birmingham Airport did pick up 1.55 inches during pre-dawn thunderstorms. Here in nearby Trussville, we only observed 0.16 of an inch. 1.52 inches fell at our SkyCam site on the Daniel Building in downtown Birmingham. Doppler radar estimates of one inch did fall over a wide area of Lamar, Fayette, southern Walker, western Jefferson, northern Tuscaloosa and northern Pickens Counties.

A GRAY START: Your Sunday is probably getting off to a foggy start, or at least a cloudy one, with lots of low, gray clouds. Lots of low level moisture left over from the storms of Friday and yesterday along with dry air aloft set the stage overnight for the development of clouds and fog. The stratus will be with us for a few hours. A look at the ABC3340 SkyCam atop Mount Cheaha State Park showed a visibility near zero by 10 p.m. last night. Take it easy if you are driving early this morning before the fog lifts.

TODAY/TOMORROW: Thunderstorms will be isolated across the area today, as Alabama comes under the influence of an easterly wedge emanating from high pressure over the Northeast. The best chance for storms will be on an arc from Montgomery to Tuscaloosa. Skies should quickly become partly cloudy as the fog lifts, and temperatures will rise to near 90, just about normal for this time of year. Monday looks like it will be a carbon copy of today, with partly cloudy skies, isolated storms and highs near 90.

WEEK AHEAD: Thunderstorms will become a little more likely on Tuesday as an upper trough loves across the area. Those rain chances will remain with us through Thursday. Highs should range between 90-94. Lows will be in the lower 70s.

TROPICS: Tomorrow marks the average date that the first hurricane forms in the Atlantic. Nothing so far. The GFS hints at a tropical low in the Gulf later in the week ahead, heading toward Texas and western Louisiana.

ON THIS DATE IN 1979: An unexpected storm blew up during a sailing race in the waters off the English Coast, capsizing seventy seven boats. It is regarded as one of the worst disasters in the history of yachting. Every available boat and helicopter along the coast was pressed into duty in the largest marine rescue since the British evacuation of the beaches at Dunkirk during World War II. The official weather forecast for the day called for moderate winds, but winds reached force ten (55-63 mph) during the disaster. The incident is the basis for the book “Fastnet: Force Ten.”

It is not often that we get to wake up to the wonderful sound of pouring rain and rumbling thunder on an August morning. For many folks across North Central Alabama, that has been the case on this Saturday. Rainfall amounts were generally light, but some nice streaks of one to two inch rainfall amounts were already evident by early morning, especially over southeastern Walker County into South Central Jefferson County. Even higher amounts may have been observed over parts of Lamar and Fayette Counties.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: A diffuse frontal boundary lies across North Alabama. Showers and storms formed overnight and into the early morning hours. That activity began to weaken during the morning hours.

LATER TODAY: The heavy clouds and precipitation have kept down readings across the northern half of the state. South of the cloudy areas, sunshine has been prevalent, and temperatures have risen into the 90s. Showers and storms were already forming by mid-morning over South Central Alabama, and this will be focus area for thunderstorm activity later today. So places like Selma, Montgomery and Auburn will see heavy storms during the afternoon hours. Further north, sunshine will gradually return as drier air filters in and storms will only be isolated. Temperatures will eventually make the upper 80s across North and North Central Alabama.

DENSE FOG LATE TONIGHT: Conditions will be ideal for the development of low
clouds and fog late tonight through the early morning hours on Sunday. Lots of low level moisture underneath clear skies will lead to the development of the clouds and fog. So keep that in mind if you travel late tonight or early tomorrow morning.

SUNDAY: So, we will likely start off on the grey side tomorrow morning. Skies should quickly become partly cloudy. Storms tomorrow should be focused over western and southwestern sections of the area, favoring places like Montgomery, Selma and Livingston. Temperatures tomorrow should still be comfortable compared to what we have been experiencing. Readings around 90 will be common.

ON THIS DATE IN 1955: Hurricane Connie was the first of three major hurricanes to strike the East Coast of the United States during the extremely active hurricane season of 1955. Connie was accompanied by maximum winds of 125 mph and a storm surge of 17 feet as she made landfall near Cape Fear NC during the early morning hours of August 12. Connie swept across the Chesapeake Bay with winds of 110 mph, sinking the excursion boat Levin F. Marvel, drowning 14 people who were returning from a day cruise to North Beach, MD. Heavy rains would set the stage for extensive flooding a week later when Hurricane Diane would drench the mid-Atlantic and Northeast with up to 19 inches of rain.

BIG CELEBRATON FOR THE RAIN: We should be out in the streets dancing
and waving our pompoms to celebrate all of the rain in the last 24
hours. Unfortunately, everybody did not get rain, but a lot of
communities got a lot. Just to mention some of the heavier amounts:
2.47 inches in Florence, 2.81 in Hodges, 2.04 in Red Bay, 1.62 in
Jasper, 1.06 at Logan Martin Lake, 1.50 in Greystone Cove, 1.31 in
Huntsville, 1.90 along the Pinson/Clay border and 2.56 at Harris Dam
(Randolph County).

This afternoon most of the thunderstorms had shifted down to the
south and SE where a Severe Thunderstorm Watch was in effect. However,
for the north-central part of the state, more scattered thunderstorms
will develop this afternoon or move in from the NW. For Saturday,
still a good chance of showers and thunderstorms, except very few over
the extreme north. After tomorrow we look for a marked decrease in
showers and the temperatures will heat up a bit by Monday and Tuesday.

We are still hanging on for a high of 89 for Saturday and 90 for
Sunday, then mid 90s early next week.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The Atlantic, Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico are
as quiet as a butterfly. Even in the far Eastern Atlantic, not much
coming off the African coast that holds much promise.

WORLD OF WEATHER AND OTHER STUFF: Remember Kevin Collins who worked
with James Spann at Channel 6 back during the Blizzard of '93? Kevin
became famous for wearing an Indiana Jones hat on the air during the
big storm. Kevin has been in Dallas for quite a while. Yesterday he
saw something that is a direct result of the blistering hot dry
weather in North Texas. He saw a 400-foot dust devil on the way to the
studio…it was 104 in Dallas-Ft. Worth yesterday, 106 in Ft. Smith,
Ark., 103 in Little Rock and 107 in Oklahoma City and Tulsa…contrast
that to a frost advisory for Saranac Lake in Upstate New York tonight
where temperatures will fall into the 30s…in Huntsville, the first 10
days of August represent the third hottest start for August on record.
Their average high for the last 10 days—an amazing 97.4 degrees.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly had a lot of quality
time under the bed yesterday afternoon and last night. That is her
favorite place to head at the first peal of thunder. The thunder
yesterday afternoon was not only window and house shaking, it sounded
like it shook the ground. She stayed under the bed for several hours.
I am beginning to believe she is just like a little kid who loves to
have a little playhouse or a little hideaway to retreat to…I stayed up
until 3:00 so I slept to an unheard of 9:00 a.m. The moment I stepped
out of my bedroom door, Molly assaulted me with a bunch of balls ready
to play. Sometimes, when I don't have time, she puts on a big all-star
game all by herself. Life goes on.

...Cooler; Storms Likely Again...

Showers and thunderstorms will headline our forecast today; good news for a
mostly parched state. Most of the showers and storms will come this
afternoon, and like recent days some spots will see heavy rain. The stronger
storms will have the potential to produce strong winds, and all storms will
feature lots of lightning. Because of the showers and storms, temperatures
will be relatively cool (compared to recent days); in fact many communities
won't even reach 90 for a change.

THE WEEKEND: A surface front will be near the Alabama/Tennessee border
tomorrow, and will only drift slowly southward during the weekend. We expect
scattered to numerous showers and storms tomorrow, but they should begin to
thin out a bit by Sunday and Monday as drier air slips in from the north.
For now, we expect fairly typical August weather for much of next week as
highs rise back into the low and mid 90s. Each day we will some risk of a
shower or storm in a few spots.

BENEFICIAL RAIN: A good part of North Alabama was soaked yesterday by big
afternoon storms. Rain totals included 2.13" at Alpine (Talladega County),
1.97" at Concord, 1.54" at Alexander City, 1.20" at Clay, .78" at
Columbiana, .76" at Greystone Cove (Shelby County), .66" at Trussville, and
.45" in downtown Birmingham at the Daniel Building. Data from NEXRAD radar
suggests five inches of rain fell in the general area from south of
Haleyville to near Bear Creek and Hackleburg in Northwest Alabama. Flash
flooding was reported in Winston County from that same batch of storms. In
Blount County, trees were blown down between Snead and Susan Moore. And, a
house fire was started by lightning in Winston County.

AT THE BEACH: If you are beach-bound this weekend, expect about 6 to 8 hours
of sunshine daily along the Alabama and Northwest Florida Gulf coast with a
few scattered showers and storms. High temperatures on the immediate coast
will be in the 88 to 91 degree range, and the sea water temperature at
Pensacola Beach last night was a warm 90 degrees.

TROPICS: The tropics remain relatively quiet, especially compared to last
year. For now the Atlantic basin is relatively quiet and tropical storm
formation is not expected through tomorrow. But, don't forget the tropics
tend to peak during late August, September, and early October so we are
still early in the season.

TEN MILLION CHEERS FOR AIR CONDITIONING: Did you know that
the very first air conditioned theater in the USA was in 1917 at the
new Empire Theater in Montgomery? We are sure thankful for AC in our
long drawn out heat wave that we have had this summer. Temperatures
had soared well into the 90s again this afternoon, but take heart, we
do see some relief starting tomorrow.

The main reason for the relief is an increase in showers and
thunderstorms. Even later this afternoon and this evening there will
be quite a few storms. We think both Friday and Saturday will feature
enough showers and storms to restrain our high temperature to about
89. That is certainly better than 98-100, although the humidity will
still be off the charts.

Scattered thunderstorms were already developing this afternoon.
Again, some of those stronger storms could give us some of those pesky
downbursts that happen so quickly and can produce damage over a
relatively small area. Some folks will also get very heavy amounts of
rain and we must always emphasize the danger of lightning.

IN THE TROPICS: The threat of a tropical depression has lessened.
The tropical wave over the eastern Caribbean did not get its act
together and a flight into the system has been canceled. Upper level
winds are very unfavorable. Over on the far side of the world, a super
typhoon was getting closer to the Chinese coast producing 36-foot
waves and wind gusts as high as 185 mph. It may move onshore in some
heavily populated areas. We dread to hear the results.

WORLD OF WEATHER AND OTHER STUFF: The Nile River in Africa is 4,184
miles long. Recent explorations show the possibility that it really
has its beginnings with a spring in the highlands of Rwanda. If that
proves true, 66 miles will be added to the length…the blistering heat
in the Plains has caused the soil, even at a depth of 4 inches, to be
as hot as 93 degrees in parts of Kansas…hottest yesterday was 117 in
Death Valley…cold spots this morning 34 in Stanley, Idaho and 32 in
Eagle, Alaska. It was 53 in Paradox, Colorado and I sure do wonder how
that town or community got its name.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I am convinced that Little Miss Molly
would make the perfect building inspector for doggie houses. I always
let her have her way on our early morning walk. She was in a sniffing
mood this morning. I timed her and it took her 45 seconds to sniff
every inch of a twig. I think she also discovered some rabbit tracks,
because she zigzagged what seems like a thousand times. I sometimes
get dizzy changing directions so fast, going in circles and reversing.
For our new readers, the very first time I walked Molly more than
three years ago, two old crows were in a vicious argument in the
tallest and near dead tree in the community. Sure sounded like divorce
proceedings. Molly and I, both with a vivid imagination, immediately
named it the Old Crow Motel.

If You're Searching for Answers, Here are the Questions!"

Pastor Kip Laxson at First United Methodist Church of Alabaster helps tackle
difficult life--questions that Christians struggle with in his series "If
You're Searching for Answers, Here are the Questions!"
during August and September. Here is the schedule for the series:

August 13- If God is Love, why is there so much evil in the world?
August 20- Do miracles really happen in today's world?
August 27- How can I overcome my problems?
September 3- Aren't all religions basically the same?
September 10- I've heard that the Bible is filled with contradictions. Is
that true?
September 17- Are we really living in the "Last Days?"
September 24- Why does God need my resources to build His kingdom?

Alabaster First United Methodist Church offers a contemporary service on
Sundays at 8:30 AM and a traditional service at 11:00 AM. Sunday school is
at 9:45. The church is located at 10903 Highway 119 in Alabaster. For more

...Afternoon Storms Likely...

Afternoon showers and thunderstorms should continue to increase in number
across Alabama today and tomorrow as the upper air high, or the core of the
hot air, moves to the west and allows the air to become more unstable. And,
as the rain coverage increases, daytime temperatures should slowly decrease.
Most communities can expect a high somewhere between 90 and 93 today, and
many places will fail to reach 90 tomorrow thanks to the clouds and showers.
While the rainfall distribution will be very uneven, most neighborhoods
should see around one inch of rain between today and Saturday. Some towns
might see up to three inches.

THE WEEKEND: A weak surface front will push into Alabama on Saturday, then
drifting down into the southern part of the state late Sunday and Monday
before dissipating. Scattered showers and storms will remain possible on
Saturday, but they should begin to thin out a bit Sunday and Monday as drier
creeps into the state from the north. Highs over the weekend should be in
the low 90s.

Most likely we push back into the mid 90s by the middle of next week as the
upper air high begins to rebuild across the Deep South. A few afternoon
showers and storms will be possible, but they will be widely scattered.

A RAIN CELEBRATION: While it didn't rain everywhere, a number of places got
a good soaking yesterday. Rain totals around Alabama included 2.04" at
Mobile, 1.80" at Cordova, 1.14" at Jasper, .87" at Montgomery, .74" at
Helena, .62" at Riverchase (the ABC 33/40 studio), .56" at Gulf Shores, .54"
at Northport, and .44" at Demopolis. Our SKYCAM at the Daniel Building on
20th Street in downtown Birmingham measured only 0.05", and the Birmingham
International
Airport reported only a trace.

STILL HOT: Tuscaloosa soared to 101 degrees yesterday, which tied the record
high for August 10 (the last time it was 101 on August 9 was way back in
1956). Birmingham's official high was 98 degrees, and the hottest place in
the state was, of all places, Desoto State Park with 103. The part is
located atop Lookout Mountain in DeKalb County, not too far from Fort Payne.

LIGHTNING INJURIES: As J.B. Elliott says, "lightning is frightening". Six
people were injured yesterday at Valparaiso, Florida after a lightning
strike. All six were transported to a local hospital. In Mobile yesterday
afternoon, lightning stuck a home and "blew apart" the chimney, according to
a report from the Mobile NWS office.

HODGEPODGE: Coldest place in the nation yesterday morning was West
Yellowstone, MT with a frosty 30 degrees. A real preview of fall is coming
up tomorrow and Saturday across much of New England, where the mercury won't
even reach 70 degrees during the day in some spots. The high yesterday in
Barrow, Alaska was only 38 degrees. Gulfport, MS was drenched with a total
of 3.30" of rain yesterday.

HEAT TO BACK OFF A BIT: And it is about time. Yesterday was
the hottest so far this year for most of the state as temperatures
topped out at 103 in Troy, 102 in Pinson, Montgomery and DeSoto State
Park, 101 in Tuscaloosa, Evergreen and Decatur. It was 100 in
Huntsville, Dothan, Anniston and Birmingham.

This afternoon the unpopular old thermometer had soared into the high
90s again, but scattered thunderstorms were cooling down some areas.
By midday, a number of thunderstorms formed over NW Alabama and moved
toward the SE. Wind gusts of 47 mph reported in Cordova, Walker
County. On a real hot afternoon like today, any of the strongest
thunderstorms could suddenly spit out a downburst that could cause
wind damage. These usually occur over a small area and happen very
quickly. Therefore, it is difficult to warn for them. Yesterday
afternoon numerous trees were reported down near Lay Lake in Central
Alabama with a number of the trees falling across houses.

BETTER NEWS AHEAD: We are still calling for high temperatures to
back off a bit Thursday, Friday and Saturday with an increase in
showers and thunderstorms. Probably Friday would be our best chance of
thunderstorms, but they will also be increasing tomorrow. High
temperatures Thursday through Saturday should be a more reasonable
90-92. Some spots may have upper 80s.

NEWS FROM THE TROPICS: It is looking more interesting. A
westward-moving tropical wave about 200 miles east of the Windward
Islands has become better organized enough that a reconnaissance
flight will go in this afternoon. It is possible a tropical depression
has already formed.

WORLD OF WEATHER: Heating up again in the Central Plains. High of
103 for today in Tulsa and 104 for Thursday…Wichita Falls, Texas will
have 107 tomorrow…117 in Death Valley was the hottest yesterday…an
even freezing was the cool spot this morning at the west entrance to
Yellowstone National Park.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I felt embarrassed that I slept until
8:06 this morning. I automatically wake up at 5:00. It took me only 45
seconds to get dressed and the moment I stepped out of the bedroom
door, Little Miss Molly gang tackled me with a bunch of her balls. So,
only one minute after waking up I was involved in one of the most
fast-paced ballgames ever…a note this morning from one of our readers
desperately searching for her lost dog named Munchkin. She is black
and tan, weighs about 40 pounds. She is still lost somewhere in the
Montclair/Mountain Brook area…last seen Tuesday morning in a parking
deck at Montclair (Trinity) Hospital. She looks very much like a small
German shepherd. Please call 205 391 9851 if you see her. There is a
reward.
