TEN MILLION CHEERS FOR AIR CONDITIONING: Did you know that
the very first air conditioned theater in the USA was in 1917 at the
new Empire Theater in Montgomery? We are sure thankful for AC in our
long drawn out heat wave that we have had this summer. Temperatures
had soared well into the 90s again this afternoon, but take heart, we
do see some relief starting tomorrow.
The main reason for the relief is an increase in showers and
thunderstorms. Even later this afternoon and this evening there will
be quite a few storms. We think both Friday and Saturday will feature
enough showers and storms to restrain our high temperature to about
89. That is certainly better than 98-100, although the humidity will
still be off the charts.
Scattered thunderstorms were already developing this afternoon.
Again, some of those stronger storms could give us some of those pesky
downbursts that happen so quickly and can produce damage over a
relatively small area. Some folks will also get very heavy amounts of
rain and we must always emphasize the danger of lightning.
IN THE TROPICS: The threat of a tropical depression has lessened.
The tropical wave over the eastern Caribbean did not get its act
together and a flight into the system has been canceled. Upper level
winds are very unfavorable. Over on the far side of the world, a super
typhoon was getting closer to the Chinese coast producing 36-foot
waves and wind gusts as high as 185 mph. It may move onshore in some
heavily populated areas. We dread to hear the results.
WORLD OF WEATHER AND OTHER STUFF: The Nile River in Africa is 4,184
miles long. Recent explorations show the possibility that it really
has its beginnings with a spring in the highlands of Rwanda. If that
proves true, 66 miles will be added to the length…the blistering heat
in the Plains has caused the soil, even at a depth of 4 inches, to be
as hot as 93 degrees in parts of Kansas…hottest yesterday was 117 in
Death Valley…cold spots this morning 34 in Stanley, Idaho and 32 in
Eagle, Alaska. It was 53 in Paradox, Colorado and I sure do wonder how
that town or community got its name.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I am convinced that Little Miss Molly
would make the perfect building inspector for doggie houses. I always
let her have her way on our early morning walk. She was in a sniffing
mood this morning. I timed her and it took her 45 seconds to sniff
every inch of a twig. I think she also discovered some rabbit tracks,
because she zigzagged what seems like a thousand times. I sometimes
get dizzy changing directions so fast, going in circles and reversing.
For our new readers, the very first time I walked Molly more than
three years ago, two old crows were in a vicious argument in the
tallest and near dead tree in the community. Sure sounded like divorce
proceedings. Molly and I, both with a vivid imagination, immediately
named it the Old Crow Motel.
