It is not often that we get to wake up to the wonderful sound of pouring rain and rumbling thunder on an August morning. For many folks across North Central Alabama, that has been the case on this Saturday. Rainfall amounts were generally light, but some nice streaks of one to two inch rainfall amounts were already evident by early morning, especially over southeastern Walker County into South Central Jefferson County. Even higher amounts may have been observed over parts of Lamar and Fayette Counties.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: A diffuse frontal boundary lies across North Alabama. Showers and storms formed overnight and into the early morning hours. That activity began to weaken during the morning hours.

LATER TODAY: The heavy clouds and precipitation have kept down readings across the northern half of the state. South of the cloudy areas, sunshine has been prevalent, and temperatures have risen into the 90s. Showers and storms were already forming by mid-morning over South Central Alabama, and this will be focus area for thunderstorm activity later today. So places like Selma, Montgomery and Auburn will see heavy storms during the afternoon hours. Further north, sunshine will gradually return as drier air filters in and storms will only be isolated. Temperatures will eventually make the upper 80s across North and North Central Alabama.

DENSE FOG LATE TONIGHT: Conditions will be ideal for the development of low
clouds and fog late tonight through the early morning hours on Sunday. Lots of low level moisture underneath clear skies will lead to the development of the clouds and fog. So keep that in mind if you travel late tonight or early tomorrow morning.

SUNDAY: So, we will likely start off on the grey side tomorrow morning. Skies should quickly become partly cloudy. Storms tomorrow should be focused over western and southwestern sections of the area, favoring places like Montgomery, Selma and Livingston. Temperatures tomorrow should still be comfortable compared to what we have been experiencing. Readings around 90 will be common.

ON THIS DATE IN 1955: Hurricane Connie was the first of three major hurricanes to strike the East Coast of the United States during the extremely active hurricane season of 1955. Connie was accompanied by maximum winds of 125 mph and a storm surge of 17 feet as she made landfall near Cape Fear NC during the early morning hours of August 12. Connie swept across the Chesapeake Bay with winds of 110 mph, sinking the excursion boat Levin F. Marvel, drowning 14 people who were returning from a day cruise to North Beach, MD. Heavy rains would set the stage for extensive flooding a week later when Hurricane Diane would drench the mid-Atlantic and Northeast with up to 19 inches of rain.
