BIG CELEBRATON FOR THE RAIN: We should be out in the streets dancing
and waving our pompoms to celebrate all of the rain in the last 24
hours. Unfortunately, everybody did not get rain, but a lot of
communities got a lot. Just to mention some of the heavier amounts:
2.47 inches in Florence, 2.81 in Hodges, 2.04 in Red Bay, 1.62 in
Jasper, 1.06 at Logan Martin Lake, 1.50 in Greystone Cove, 1.31 in
Huntsville, 1.90 along the Pinson/Clay border and 2.56 at Harris Dam
(Randolph County).

This afternoon most of the thunderstorms had shifted down to the
south and SE where a Severe Thunderstorm Watch was in effect. However,
for the north-central part of the state, more scattered thunderstorms
will develop this afternoon or move in from the NW. For Saturday,
still a good chance of showers and thunderstorms, except very few over
the extreme north. After tomorrow we look for a marked decrease in
showers and the temperatures will heat up a bit by Monday and Tuesday.

We are still hanging on for a high of 89 for Saturday and 90 for
Sunday, then mid 90s early next week.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The Atlantic, Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico are
as quiet as a butterfly. Even in the far Eastern Atlantic, not much
coming off the African coast that holds much promise.

WORLD OF WEATHER AND OTHER STUFF: Remember Kevin Collins who worked
with James Spann at Channel 6 back during the Blizzard of '93? Kevin
became famous for wearing an Indiana Jones hat on the air during the
big storm. Kevin has been in Dallas for quite a while. Yesterday he
saw something that is a direct result of the blistering hot dry
weather in North Texas. He saw a 400-foot dust devil on the way to the
studio…it was 104 in Dallas-Ft. Worth yesterday, 106 in Ft. Smith,
Ark., 103 in Little Rock and 107 in Oklahoma City and Tulsa…contrast
that to a frost advisory for Saranac Lake in Upstate New York tonight
where temperatures will fall into the 30s…in Huntsville, the first 10
days of August represent the third hottest start for August on record.
Their average high for the last 10 days—an amazing 97.4 degrees.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly had a lot of quality
time under the bed yesterday afternoon and last night. That is her
favorite place to head at the first peal of thunder. The thunder
yesterday afternoon was not only window and house shaking, it sounded
like it shook the ground. She stayed under the bed for several hours.
I am beginning to believe she is just like a little kid who loves to
have a little playhouse or a little hideaway to retreat to…I stayed up
until 3:00 so I slept to an unheard of 9:00 a.m. The moment I stepped
out of my bedroom door, Molly assaulted me with a bunch of balls ready
to play. Sometimes, when I don't have time, she puts on a big all-star
game all by herself. Life goes on.
