...Fall Back Tonight...

I am writing the forecast as I roll through the West Georgia
countryside onboard AMTRAK's Crescent on a gray and misty fall
Saturday morning. The sleepy little towns roll by outside my
window: Douglasville, Villa Rica, Temple, Bremen, Tallapoosa.
Soon I will be back in Alabama. The trees are beautiful right now,
painting the landscape with yellows, oranges and reds.

FALL BACK TONIGHT: According to the clock, sunrise will seem a lot
earlier in the morning. So will sunset. We switch from Daylight
Saving Time to Standard Time overnight tonight. Officially, the
switch occurs at 2 a.m. local time. But you don't have to set your
clock for 2 a.m. to turn back time. Just do it before you retire for
bed tonight. You'll get an extra hour of sleep overnight!

RAIN SLOW TO LEAVE: The cold front that pushed through Central
Alabama overnight and this morning was slowing its forward progress.
The upper trough is swinging through Mississippi this morning,
producing quite a bit of post frontal precipitation. Rain will
gradually end from the west through the afternoon hours. The clearing
line had reached I-55 in Mississippi by mid-morning, and will progress
across Alabama this evening. I think we could see a few peeks of
sunshine over western areas late this afternoon. Folks at Legion
Field should have the rain gear handy, as well as a jacket for the
cool temperatures and brisk northwesterly wind.

SUNDAY AND BEYOND: By morning, skies should be clear across Central
Alabama. There could be some patchy dense for or low cloudiness
early, but most of the day will feature sunshine. Highs will be in
the middle 60s. Another clear and cool night is on tap for Sunday
night. Then we will settle in for a few days of fine fall weather.
Through Friday, you can expect a good deal of sunshine with fairly
seasonable temperatures. Highs will gradually warm to near 70.
Overnight lows will be in the 40s. A few showers could return Friday
as southeasterly flow increases moisture over the state. Showers will
be around Saturday and Sunday.

WEATHERBRAINS: We have a fine slate of guests prepared for your
enjoyment on the podcast that's all about weather. Dr. Chuck Doswell
will be on Monday night. Famed wind engineer and severe weather
expert Tim Marshall will be with us next week. Mike Smith, the
President of the private meteorological firm WeatherData will join us
to discuss what is right about the severe weather system. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com
or subscribe at iTunes. It's free!

ON THE DATE IN 1984: According to Tom Grazulis of the Tornado
Project, there has only been one fatal aircraft accident involving a
tornado. A tornado was nearby when a single-engine plane crashed south
of Topeka, KS on this date in 1984, killing all three people on board.
The tornado killed two people on the ground. The airplane was about
10 miles south of the Topeka airport, and probably about a mile from
the tornado as the pilot talked by radio with to air traffic control.
A minute later people in a house heard a crash in a nearby field, but
thought it was debris from trailers they had seen the tornado hitting.
They didn't investigate. The next morning the wreckage of the
airplane was found in the field. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter.com

...Happy Halloween...

A busy weekend with big football games today, races at Talladega all
weekend, and lots of ghosts and goblins running around tonight.
Weather has been a concern, but things will be improving by this
afternon. Away we go…

FRIDAY SEVERE WEATHER: A low pressure system to our west and a warm
front conspired to produce severe weather across western parts of the
Alabama Friday afternoon and evening. Slightly unstable air and
decent wind shear produced spinning storms over Northwest sections of
the state. "Significant damage" was reported southwest of Haleyville
from a possible tornado. Several funnel clouds were observed in
Marion and Walker Counties. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

WEEKEND WEATHER: As the low moved northeast, it dragged a cold front
across the state overnight, pushing a lagging area of rain eastward.
Rain will be ending from the west across the area today. It should
end over western sections by midmorning, the I-65 corridor by lunch
and East Alabama by mid-afternoon. Skies will begin to clear some this
afternoon. It will be clear/cool overnight. Tomorrow should dawn
bright and sunny, setting the stage for a nice day.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The fine weather of Sunday will carry over into the
new work week, with dry and slightly cool conditions for early
November expected. We should be rain free through Friday.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: The Magic City Classic is a huge Birmingham
event. There will be rain for the parade this morning, but it should
be mostly gone by the game this afternoon. Carry some rain gear and
a light jacket because of the temperatures near 60F and the brisk
northwest wind. Auburn will host Ole Miss this morning with an 11:30
kickoff. Rain is a good bet. Temperatures will be in the lower 60s.
UAB is on the road at UTEP in El Paso, Texas (2:00 kickoff); the sky
will be
sunny with a kickoff temperature near 65 degrees.

RACE WEATHER: There could be some light rain for the truck race
today at Talladega, but the weather for tomorrow's Amp Energy 500
should be ideal: sunny and slightly cool with a high in the middle 60s.

WEATHERBRAINS: Episode 197 is going to be a memorable one as
legendary storm researcher Dr. Chuck Doswell visits with the panel.
Much of what we know today about severe storm structure and tornado
formation comes from a blockbuster 1979 paper that Doswell and Les
Lemon wrote. It will be a fascinating hour. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com
or subscribe on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 1876: Viewed to be the worst cyclone to have moved
across the Bay of Bengal during the 19th Century, the Backergunge
Cyclone devastated the northeast coast of India, killing 100,000
people. The city of Backergunge, (now Barisal, Bangladesh) was
inundated by the 40 foot storm surge of the cyclone, destroying nearly
all of its 1,700 buildings. The Bay of Bengal is shaped like a
funnel, and as a cyclone pushes its storm surge into the narrowing
bay, the surge is able to rise to dramatic heights. There was a
telegraphic warning service being developed by the India
Meteorological Department, but it had not been extended to the port of
Backergunge. Experts believe that a cyclone similar to the
Backergunge storm today might kill one million people. Follow my
weather history tweets on Twitter @wxhistorian.

...Stormy Start To The Weekend...

TAKE HEART—DRY WEATHER ALL NEXT WEEK: From the e-mails I have
received and other messages, people are extremely sick and tired of so
much rain. So what do we have again today and tonight--more rain and
thunderstorms. Those storms increased in number and strength this
afternoon across Mississippi and moved into West Alabama. As a result,
the Storm Prediction Center issued a Tornado Watch that goes until
7:00 this evening for about the western one-third of the state. The
Tornado Watch extends as far east as Walker, Tuscaloosa, Hale and
Marengo Counties, but it did not include the immediate Birmingham
area. A Tornado Warning was posted for Pickens County.

NOW WHAT: A cool front has been moving ever so slowly eastward for a
couple of days. At times, I thought it was moving no faster than a
mule and wagon. The cooler air has already spread into West
Mississippi and overspreading a good part of Alabama tonight. When you
get up Saturday morning, temperatures will be well down into the 50s
and there is a chance that the old backyard thermometer will have to
struggle to even get out of the 50s Saturday. I am afraid the rain
will linger through much of tomorrow morning, but mostly gone by the
middle of the day. After that, dry weather for at least five days in a
row. That should be such good news that we should throw a street
party. It is going to be rather chilly for the trick-or-treaters
Saturday night. Temperatures should be in the lower 50s by dark. It
looks like Sunday morning will be our coolest. We are calling for 42,
but some of the colder valleys in NE Alabama could easily have 36 or 38.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: First is the Magic City Classic. It is more than a
football game. Think of it as a huge family reunion involving
thousands! They arrive each October several days before the annual
clash between Alabama A&M and Alabama State. They meet with old
friends, lots of tailgating at Legion Field—you name it. There will be
a parade Saturday with a kick off at 2:30. It will be much cooler with
a good chance of rain into the early part of the game, so you will
need a jacket and rain gear. It will do good to get up to 60 at kick
off and falling into the 50s. For high school games tonight, wet
weather for most of the games, mainly over the western half of the
state and some strong storms possible. In other college games,
Concordia will be at Miles at 6:00 this evening. Looks wet with a good
chance of rain and maybe some strong storms. In the 60s at kick off,
dropping to 58 in the second half. Depaw will be at Birmingham
Southern for a noon kick off on Saturday. Rain should be diminishing
at that time but a lot cooler. About 58 at kick off and mid 50s in the
second half. UAB is as far in West Texas as you can go and still be in
Texas. They are in El Paso to play the University of Texas/El Paso
with a 2:00 p.m. kick off. All sunshine with game-time temperatures 65
to 70. Ole Miss will be at Auburn for an early kick off at 11:21 a.m.
Good chance of rain and a few thunderstorms, but they should be
decreasing. Much cooler with middle 60s through the game. Jack State
will be at Clarksville, Tennessee to play Austin-Peay for a 4:00 p.m.
kick off. Dry weather, but very cool, with 56 at kick off and 48 by
the end of the game.

...A Cool, Wet Halloween...

NOT MUCH RAIN TODAY: A complex storm system will impact Alabama during
the next 48 hours, but during the day today the most active weather
will remain west of Alabama, over Mississippi, Louisiana, and West
Tennessee. A shower could pop up in a few spots, but most communities
will be dry. The weather will be mild and breezy with a high in the
upper 70s, and the sun should break out at times.
Thunderstorms will enter West Alabama late this afternoon and early
tonight, and those could be strong. The storms will progress eastward
during the night, slowly weakening east of I-65 as they encounter more
stable air.

WET HALLOWEEN: Much cooler air invades Alabama tomorrow behind the
surface front, with a vigorous upper trough will keep the sky cloudy
with periods of rain through the morning. The rain will end from west
to east tomorrow afternoon, and there is a good chance most of the
rain will be over by the time the trick or treaters hit the street
tomorrow evening. It will be a very cool rain tomorrow with
temperatures hovering in the 56 to 60 degree range much of the day.

The sky will clear tomorrow night, and we are still forecasting a
beautiful Sunday, with a sunny sky and a high in the mid 60s. Dry
weather will continue well into next week with seasonally cool
temperatures.

NASCAR WEATHER: Rain is likely for tomorrow's truck race at the
Talladega Superspeedway with afternoon temperatures in the 57 to 60
degree range. Sunday looks perfect for the running of the Amp Energy
500 with a sunny sky and a high in the mid 60s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: I would recommend rain gear for tonight's high
school games, although stadiums over the eastern half of the state
could be generally dry. Thunderstorms are possible for the games over
West Alabama. Temperatures will be mostly in the 60s at all venues.
For tomorrow's Auburn game against Ole Miss at Jordan-Hare Stadium,
the weather will be cool and wet with periods of rain and temperatures
in the 58 to 61 degree range. UAB will be way far away in El Paso
playing UTEP at 2:00 p.m. It will be sunny with mid 60s most of the
game. Now, the Magic City Classic—a very special occasion that is more
than just a football game. It is tomorrow and it includes a parade and
lots of other outdoor activities. Numerous people are already in town
and are busy meeting friends and tailgating. The kick off is at 2:30
p.m. at Legion Field. You will need a light jacket and some rain gear.
There is a good chance of some rain and the temperature will not get
any higher than about 60 with a brisk northwest wind.

OCTOBER STORMS: Severe storms were widespread across the Ark-La-Tex
last night; The steeple at the First Methodist Church in downtown
Shreveport was toppled by high winds… the steeple fell on top of a car
that was passing the church. At least 30 homes in one Bossier Parish
neighborhood suffered damage after being hit with high winds.

...October Still Acting Unusual...

THE ALABAMA STORY: As we get into the weekend, we are going to have
some more changeable weather. A warm front has been involved in our
weather today. Last night it was lined up along the Gulf Coast and it
began moving north. This set off some widespread rain and a few
thunderstorms with some locally heavy amounts over the northern third
of the state. There was not much lightning with these. This afternoon,
most of those showers had moved north into Tennessee, but we still
have more problems off to our west. Showers and thunderstorms were
fairly numerous and rather strong this afternoon over the eastern
parts of Texas and Oklahoma and into NW Louisiana and Arkansas. We
will have to deal with this weather over the next 24 to 48 hours, but
the eastward movement is rather slow. So this is what we are
projecting for Central Alabama:

Only a slight chance of a shower tonight with temperatures hanging
steady in the mid 60s. Brisk, SE wind on Friday with scattered showers
and maybe some thunderstorms, mostly in the afternoon and evening.
Widespread rain and a few thunderstorms on Saturday, but also
noticeably cooler. Sunshine returns both Sunday and Monday with
pleasant afternoon temperatures, but chilly mornings around 46.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Good news for high school games tonight. We believe
most stadiums will be without rain. Not as lucky Friday night when
there will be some scattered showers and storms. For college football,
Concordia will be at Miles College for a 6:00 kick off this evening.
Good chance of getting through the game without rain and temperatures
will hang mostly in the 60s. Ole Miss will be at Auburn Saturday for
an 11:30 kick off. There is a good chance of rain and maybe a few
thunderstorms during the game, but it will be cooler with game-time
temperatures mostly in the 60s. UAB will be way far away in El Paso
laying UTEP at 2:00 p.m. It will be sunny with mid 60s most of the
game. Now, the Magic City Classic—a very special occasion that is more
than just a football game. It is on Saturday and it includes a parade
and lots of other outdoor activities. Numerous people are already in
town and are busy meeting friends and tailgating. The kick off is at
2:30 p.m. at Legion Field. You will need a light jacket and some rain
gear. There is a good chance of some rain and the temperature will not
get any higher than about 62 with a brisk NW wind. Another big event
this weekend are the NASCAR races at Talladega. A good chance of some
showers and thunderstorms for the Saturday event, but the weather
looks perfect for the main race on Sunday. It will be almost all
sunshine with cooler temperatures. The high during the race about 68
to 70.

AROUND THE GOOL OLD USA: Severe weather this afternoon with a Tornado
Watch in the eastern sections of Oklahoma
and Texas, Southern Arkansas and NW Louisiana. A historic snowstorm
was winding down in parts of the Rockies. It has been described as the
biggest snowstorm in about 12 years in much of that area. Denver was
hard hit, among many other places. One of the biggest snow amounts was
40 inches at Black Hawk, Colorado in Gilpin County. There was 44
inches at Pinecliff.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I believe that Little Miss Molly has
ESP. This morning she was passed out like a rock in my favorite chair.
Her best friend, Dino the little Yorkie, passed by out front on his
morning bathroom break. He did not make any noise, but Little Miss
Molly came roaring out of her sleep and went on full alert and was
scratching at the door wanting to get out and play with him. Later,
when I walked Molly, she stopped behind his house and cried and cried.
It will not be long until her IQ exceeds mine, which is going down.
Life goes on.

...Unsettled Through Saturday...

MOISTURE RETURNS: We are in store for rather unsettled weather through
the first half of the weekend as moist air flows northward into
Alabama, and a major upper trough approaches from the west. A few
scattered showers are possible across the state today and tonight, but
rain should be rather light and spotty. The sky will be generally
cloudy, and we warm into the upper 70s.

Tomorrow will be mild and breezy with high back in the mid to upper
70s, and we will mention the chance of scattered showers and storms.
But, it certainly won't rain all day, and we should see a few
intervals of sunshine. The most active weather will remain west of
Alabama through tomorrow, where the dual threat of severe
thunderstorms and flash flooding will exist. The main band of showers
and storms associated with the upper trough probably won't get here
until late Saturday afternoon or Saturday night. Based on the strength
of the upper dynamics and the expected instability, it looks like we
will have some risk of strong to severe storms Saturday night. Then,
drier air returns Sunday with sunshine back in full supply and a high
close to 70.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: A few scattered showers are possible for the high
school games tonight and tomorrow night, but most stadiums will be
dry. Game temperatures will be mostly in the upper 60s. For Saturday's
Magic City Classic at Legion Field in Birmingham (2:30 p.m. kickoff),
a passing shower or storm is possible during the game with
temperatures in the mid 70s. A strong storm is possible during the
second half of the game. Auburn will host Ole Miss Saturday morning
with an 11:30 kickoff; the sky will be mostly cloudy, and a shower or
thunderstorm is possible. The kickoff temperature will be close to 72,
rising into the mid 70s during the game. UAB is on the road at UTEP in
El Paso, Texas (2:00 kickoff); the sky will be sunny with a kickoff
temperature near 65 degrees.

TALLADEGA WEATHER: For Saturday's Mountain Dew 250, the weather will
be mild and breezy with some risk of a shower or storm during the
race. The chance of a shower or storm at the track at any given time
will be about one in three, and temperatures will be in the low to mid
70s. Sunday still promises to be a very nice day for the Amp Energy
500 with ample sunshine and a high around 70. Keep in mind there is a
risk of strong to severe storms Saturday night, so campers will need
to be aware of the weather since high winds could easily be involved
in those thunderstorms.

TO THE WEST: A significant severe weather event is possible today in
the broad area from Houston to St. Louis, where thunderstorms are
possible later today with large hail and damaging winds. A few
isolated tornadoes will be possible as well. Flash flood watches also
cover much of this region, where some spots could see over five inches
of rain. Some of the cities in the flash flood watch area include
Shreveport, Little Rock, Jackson, and Memphis.

...More Storms Ahead...

It's my pleasure to sit in for J.B. on this Wednesday afternoon. It
is a beautiful day across Central Alabama, but we are in for some
unsettled weather over the next few days as a powerhouse storm system
out west heads our way. The models have been all over the board with
the weekend system, so our confidence in timing is low. Armed with
the morning model data, let's take a look…

TRANISITION AHEAD: Tonight will feature partly cloudy and seasonally
cool conditions. As we head into Thursday and Thursday night, clouds
will be on the increase and a few showers and storms will develop as a
warm front lifts to the north. You will feel the humidity again by
Thursday night as dewpoints rise into the middle 60s again on the back
of an increasing southeasterly wind.

STORMS BUILD FRIDAY: Friday will be breezy, humid and warm with a
few showers and storms around. To the west, we will be watching the
battle zone between a deep trough to the west and a stubborn upper
high to our southeast. Strong storms will be ongoing ahead of a cold
front over the ArkLaMiss region. Our best opinion right now is that
thunderstorms will start forming over western sections Friday
afternoon and remain mainly over West Alabama Friday evening. High
school games over the western half of the area will likely be wet,
with a chance that eastern ones will as well.

SATURDAY AND BEYOND: The models continue to trend later and later
with the main line of storms, which may not arrive until Saturday
evening. Based on this model run, the rain would be gone by Sunday
morning for the most part. Not good news for trick or treaters, but
better news for Magic City Classic attendees and race fans. For now,
we expect 0.5-1.5 inches of rain through Sunday. Stay tuned for tweaks
and changes to this forecast right on up to the weekend however and be
prepared for anything. The best chance for severe weather would be
if the system arrives Friday evening. Severe chances will go down
with time as the main dynamics exit well to the north of Alabama. It
looks like we could enjoy a fine ten day run of weather starting
Sunday. Watch for a hurricane to come out of the Caribbean,
threatening South Florida around the 11th. It will be interesting to
watch.

WEATHERBRAINS: It was a fun show Monday night with the cast of the
innovative PBS show A.M. Weather, that aired from 1978-1995. J.B.
says it is one of our top five shows. I agree. Go to www.WeatherBrains.com
or subscribe on iTunes. This coming Monday night will feature a
special visit from Dr. Chuck Doswell, a legendary severe weather
researcher. Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: A newlywed bride was swept to her death as she
and her fiancée took photographs of tremendous waves from a ferocious
Pacific storm at Pacific Grove CA. The storm generated waves up to 27
feet high. The powerful storm swirled offshore for a day before
moving inland, pounding Washington, Oregon and California with the
tremendous waves.

DRY WEDNESDAY: Expect a warmer day across Alabama as temperatures rise
into the low 70s this afternoon with a good supply of sunshine. But,
to the west, our eyes are on a powerful upper trough producing heavy
snow for the Rocky Mountain region; that system will impact Alabama
before the week is over.

TOMORROW AND FRIDAY: Clouds will begin to increase tomorrow as winds
veer around to the south, and we will mention the risk of a few
scattered showers late tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night. The rain
won't be especially widespread with the main system still well to the
west. Pretty much the same story Friday; it will be a warm and breezy
day with more clouds than sun and the risk of scattered showers and
thunderstorms. Highs on Thursday and Friday will be up in the mid 70s,
with potential for upper 70s over the western counties of the state.
Severe storms will be possible in states west of Alabama on Thursday
and Friday as the upper trough slowly moves eastward. Stronger storms
could ease into Alabama late Friday night.

HALLOWEEN WEEKEND: The last several runs of the GFS model have slowed
the storm system down considerably, and we are now going to have to
maintain a chance of showers and thunderstorms into Saturday. In fact,
we might have a risk of strong to severe thunderstorms on Saturday
with excellent upper dynamics. The big question involves the amount of
surface based instability available. The rain could be heavy at times
late Friday night and Saturday, with amounts of 1 to 2 inches likely.
The rain will finally move out of the state by late Saturday
afternoon, hopefully by the time the trick-or-treaters begin their
work. Looks like you will need the rain gear for Saturday's Magic City
Classic at Legion Field. Sunday still looks nice, with a sunny sky and
a high around 70. A perfect day for the Amp Energy 500 at the
Talladega Superspeedway.

TUESDAY'S RAIN: The heaviest rain fell across the southeast half of
Alabama yesterday; totals included 2.10" at Troy, 1.94" at Dothan, and
1.49" at Auburn. Amounts were much lighter up this way; Birmingham's
official rain total was only 0.16".

STORM ALERT XTREME: Want to be trained as a storm spotter? Want to
join the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher team? Our annual training event, Storm
Alert Xtreme, is coming up on Saturday November 14 at the BJCC during
the annual Birmingham International Auto Show. You will be trained by
the best SKYWARN trainer in the nation, our own Brian Peters (he has
trained over 6,000 Alabama storm spotters over the years). We
encourage all of our Skywatchers to attend this every year; you simply
cannot get enough training. We will begin at 9:30, and be out by 3:30.
And, everyone that attends Storm Alert Xtreme gets free admission to
the Alabama International Auto Show. There is no admission charge, and
no need to register. Just show up, but get there early for a good
seat. We had a packed house last year.

...Mixed Up Weather...

THE ALABAMA STORY: It has been a relatively cool day across Alabama
with a steady rain in many areas and some heavier showers over the SE
part of the state. We have a report from the small community of
Industry, located in Butler County, of 2.10 inches of rain so far.
Early this afternoon, temperatures were still only in the 50s over
most of Alabama with a steady rain. Exceptions to that was 61 in
Tuscaloosa and 66 in Mobile. Along the NW Florida coast, there were
some strong thunderstorms and the Storm Prediction Center issued a
Tornado Watch for part of the Florida Panhandle in extreme SW Georgia
until 6:00 this evening.

Our weather sure has been fast changing for several weeks and we see
no sign that it will completely settle down to one type of weather or
another. Today a low-pressure area was moving toward the NE to the
west of Alabama. This will pull a cool front into the state by
morning. That should give us a dry day Wednesday with warmer afternoon
temperatures reaching the lower 70s. Look out for some patches of
dense fog forming tonight, then lifting early tomorrow. On Thursday we
go right back into another change with some scattered showers and
thunderstorms, but most of those will occur Thursday night.

OUR STORMIEST DAY: Friday will probably be our stormiest day the rest
of the week with scattered showers and thunderstorms becoming numerous
Friday night with some strong storms possible. Saturday is sort of a
mystery day. Some of our lovable weather models keep some showers in
on Saturday while another one takes the frontal boundary down into SE
Alabama. We will finetune that later, but for the moment we have
omitted showers on that day.

This is race weekend in Talladega. While Saturday may be a question
mark, Sunday should be dry with pleasant temperatures.

PLEASE SAY IT IS NOT SO: Sure did hate to see that story in The
Birmingham News this morning about the Cullman County sweet potatoes.
It is estimated that 70-80% of the yield this year will be lost
because of way too much rain. Sweet potatoes rate at the very top of
my personal food chain. If I was marooned on a South Pacific island
and could have a baked sweet potato every 3 hours alternated with a
Pop-Tart and moon pie in between, I might decline being rescued.

POINT BARROW: Let us start at the north tip of Alaska for our
miscellaneous coverage. The sun will not rise there until almost 11:00
tomorrow morning. They are now losing sunlight at almost 11 minutes a
day as they head toward that long siege of total darkness. The coldest
in Alaska this morning was 9 at Ft. Yukon. We do not have a list of
the coldest in the lower 48.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure am not making light of this, but
if I were to get stressed out (I never have before), I could pick up
Little Miss Molly and talk to her and it would be equal to eating a
Prozac sandwich or a Valium casserole. She is just that much of a
stabilizer, but she can also drive me crazy sometimes like forcing me
to go all the way to the end of the walking track this morning in a
steady rain. She is almost weather proof. The only time she ever saw
snow actually falling, she would leap high off the ground, snapping at
the snowflakes before they reached the ground. Life goes on.

===================================================================

WET TUESDAY: Our forecast package today will highlight occasional
showers and thunderstorms thanks to an upper trough passing overhead.
It will be a cool rain with temperatures holding in the 59 to 63
degree range much of the day; that also means no surface based
instability, meaning no significant threat of severe weather. Most
communities can expect one-half to one inch of rain. Tomorrow promises
to be a brighter and warmer day with a partly sunny sky and a high in
the low 70s.

MORE RAIN LATER THIS WEEK: A very cold, deep upper trough will bring
heavy snow to parts of the Rocky Mountains tomorrow, and will bring
another chance of rain and storms to Alabama before the week is over.
A few scattered showers could break out on Thursday, but the main band
of showers and storms is scheduled to arrive late Friday and Friday
night. Based on the strength of the upper support, it is very possible
that we might be dealing with strong to severe thunderstorms, so the
system will be monitored closely as it approaches later in the week.
Some of the best upper support will be lifting north of Alabama, so
hopefully that will prevent a major severe weather problem. Confidence
is not especially high in timing this event due to inconsistent model
output, but at this time it looks like the best chance of strong to
severe storms will come from about 4:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Friday.

THE WEEKEND: Looks like showers will move out of the state during the
pre-dawn hours Saturday. The sky will become partly sunny Saturday
with a high in the low 70s. Looks like a great night for trick or
treaters Saturday night, with a clear sky and pleasantly cool evening
temperatures in the 60s. And, Sunday will feature a good supply of
sunshine with a high in the low to mid 70s, a great day for the Amp
Energy 500 at the Talladega Superspeedway.

WE NEED SLEEP: The good news is that we gain one hour of sleep this
weekend; we go back on standard time at 2:00 a.m. Saturday. This means
you set your clocks back one hour before you go to bed Saturday night.
The sun will set Sunday afternoon at 4:55 p.m. Central Standard Time.

ABC 33/40 E-Forecast - Storm Alert Xtreme!

Here is a special note for our E-Forecast subscribers...

People often ask how they can become one of our Skywatchers; my
response is that you have to love weather, have a computer and a
camera, and be willing to be trained. We do that training only once a
year, and this year's Storm Alert Xtreme is less than one month away.
We will be at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center on Saturday,
November 14; we will begin at 9:30, and wrap up by 2:30. There is no
admission charge, and everybody that comes for training gets free
admission to the Alabama International Auto Show, which is going on at
the same venue.

Our own Brian Peters, long time Warning-Coordination Meteorologist for
the Birmingham National Weather Service office, will do the training.
The morning session will be the basic class, followed by the advanced
class after lunch. I will be there as well, and we encourage all
existing Skywatchers to attend for their annual refresher course. I
have been a professional meteorologist for over 30 years, and I always
learn something new when Brian teaches. He really does a wonderful job.

In addition to those who want to join our team of Skywatchers, this is
also a wonderful training opportunity for first responders, utility
workers, EMA (emergency management agency) staff members, and students
interested in meteorology. Everybody who attends will gain admission
into our Skywatcher IM chat session, meaning we see your reports in
real time during active and severe weather events. We currently have
over 500 active Skywatchers on our roster, and are looking for more.
We are especially interested in new Skywatchers in rural areas of
Alabama where severe weather reports are hard to find. Radar is a
wonderful tool, but the beam gets higher off the ground as it gets
farther away from the radar site, and trained eyes are crucial to
accurate warnings.

We have had wonderful crowds in recent years, and we expect a bigger
group this year. So, if you are a Skywatcher now, or want to be one,
we will see you on Saturday, November 14 at the BJCC at 9:30. No need
to register, just show up. Look for the signs that will be placed
around the site for directions! To subscribe or unsubscribe from the ABC 33/40 E-Forecast, go here:

...More Changes Ahead...

THE ALABAMA SITUATION: It is a continuing story of changeable
weather. We go from showers and thunderstorms to bright blue sky, cool
nights only to return to warmer afternoons and more showers and
thunderstorms. We are gradually approaching the time of year when we
have our secondary severe weather season. For several years in a row,
not long ago, the autumn severe weather season was worse than the
spring season. But, if you go way back as long as there were records,
the spring season of March, April and May is the most violent. Our
autumn season varies from year to year, but generally speaking it is
from November through early December.

BACK TO THE PRESENT: After a utopian weekend, we now go back to some
wet weather. Mind you, we do not need any rain whatsoever. We are now
approaching 59 inches for the year, which is 13 inches more than we
had last year on this date. Our surplus is close to 15 inches. We have
a chance of getting 1 to 2 inches of rain over the next 4 days. We may
see a few showers this evening, but a better chance after midnight.
Tuesday looks interesting as a low-pressure system moves NE from
Mississippi pulling a warm front northward. That should give us lots
of showers, in fact, in may be more of a steady rain at times.
Wednesday looks dry and warmer only to see some more scattered showers
and thunderstorms on Thursday and an even better chance on Friday. A
few of those on Friday could be strong.

TORNADO SCORECARD: So far this month, 27 tornadoes have been reported
around the USA. That number may be reduced after storm surveys. To
show you how the tornado season can be extremely variable, we had 21
confirmed tornadoes in the country last October, but 86 in 2007.
Reported tornadoes for the year so far is 1,207, but for 2008 we had
1,691 confirmed tornadoes. The tornado fatalities so far this year is
22. Last year we had 126.

MISCELLANEOUS: Do not forget that next weekend we go back to Central
Standard Time. Most weather people like that better, because
international weather data is based on the same time the year around
and CST gives us an extra hour to absorb an overwhelming amount of
model date. It still blows my mind how Texas has changed from drought
to too much rain. A Flash Flood Watch was in effect for much of East
Texas today. In the last 24 hours, 1.65 inches at Waco and 1.47 at
Austin is typical. A few sample cold temperatures this morning: zero
at Arctic Village, Alaska; 8 at Walcott, Colorado; and 9 at Crested
Butte. Hottest Sunday was 95 at Thermal, California. Would you believe
that in 1907, in only one week, 313 inches of snow accumulated at
Tamarack, California!

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The MO (Majority Owner) has given me
another executive order to limit Little Miss Molly to one-half of a
treat at one time. My little pal likes Milk Bone treats. We buy the
smallest size and break them in half. She does not react any
differently if you give her a half or a whole, but she will not let
you forget it when it is time for one. She can never say that I was
not on the ball with her over the weekend. We had numerous walks and
about 5 different play sessions with little Dino, the Yorkie, that
lives a few houses away. They are a riot to watch. Life goes on.

...More Active Weather Ahead...

It looks like we will add to our rainfall surplus over the next week,
as well as moving up the rankings for all time October rainfall in
Birmingham. Plus, we can't rule out a couple of shots at severe
weather in the next five days. Let's break it down.

SYSTEM ONE: A tremendous amount of moisture over the western Gulf
and an approaching trough will conspire to spin up a low pressure
center later today that will slide up into Louisiana and up the
Mississippi River. This means increasing clouds for us. Rain and
storms will affect the area on Tuesday, with two inches or more
expected tomorrow. There may be a short window of time that we are in
the warm sector late Tuesday afternoon. With low instability and high
shear, there could be low topped convection that can produce damaging
winds or even tornadoes. We will have to watch it carefully.

SYSTEM TWO: Wednesday looks like a nice day, with partly cloudy
skies and warm temperatures. Another powerful upper level system and
surface low will be to our west by Thursday. This means increasing
clouds again, with a chance of showers and storms as a warm front
comes north over the area. The strong surface low will move northward
from Kansas to Minnesota by Friday morning. This will push a cold
front towards us here in Alabama. This means another chance of
showers and storms, mostly likely coming Friday afternoon and night.
The models have been all over the boards on the timing and intensity
of this system, so forecast uncertainty is high. Hopefully it will be
gone in time for high school football. The Magic City Classic looks
good as does the Saturday race at Talladega. Sunday's marquee race
looks good as well, weather wise.

SKY SHOW: You will see a beautiful conjunction of the Moon and
Jupiter tonight in the southern sky, if cloudiness does not block the
view. They made for a wonderfully bright pair last night. I hope you
caught them in case skies are not cooperative tonight.

WEATHERBRAINS: We are finalizing our plans for a big Amateur Radio
tribute show on February 1st. Tonight, it's a fond look back at one
of the best weather television shows ever: PBS's AM Weather from the
70s and 80s. Join the panel, Joan von Ahn, Carl Weiss, and NWA
President-elect Steve Zubrick for a trip down a meteorological memory
lane. Follow our tweets about the show: we are @weatherbrains at Twitter.com
.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: Hurricane Mitch tied Hurricane Camille (1969)
as the fourth strongest Atlantic Hurricane of record when Air Force
Reconnaissance found a central pressure of 905 millibars, making it a
Category 5 hurricane. Of course, that all changed with the 2005
season, as Wilma, Rita and Katrina all posted lower central
pressures. Mitch would stay a Category 5 forty two hours. . The
central pressure of 905 millibars was also the lowest pressure ever
observed in an October hurricane in the Atlantic basin to that time.
Oh, wait. Wilma was an October hurricane. The maximum sustained winds
in Mitch reached 180 mph. Mitch would go on to kill over 11,000
people in Honduras and Nicaragua, making it the deadliest Atlantic
hurricane since 1780. Follow my weather history tweets

...Nice Fall Afternoon...

A beautiful October afternoon is in progress across Central Alabama as
high pressure ridges into the Deep South from West Virginia through
Central Tennessee. A cool easterly flow around the high pressure ridge
is pulling cooler, dry air into the state from Georgia. Temperatures
are in the 60s, wit middle 60s from I-65 west, and lower 60s in the
east. Dewpoints are low, around 40F, indicating the dryness of the
air. Skies are crystal clear and deep blue, about as pretty as you
will ever see in Alabama. Some high cirrus clouds were working their
way to the north over South Alabama and will affect Central sections
of the state this evening and overnight. Lows will be in the 40s.

A NEW WORK WEEK: Skies will be partly cloudy on Monday, with highs
in the lower 70s. Skies will begin to become cloudy Monday evening,
with showers arriving overnight. Tuesday looks like a wetter day in
recent model runs. Most areas can expect over an inch of rain from
system number one. We won't see much of an airmass change behind this
first system, and Wednesday looks like it will remain a little humid,
but with partly cloudy skies and warm conditions. Look for highs in
the middle 70s.

END OF WEEK STORM SYSTEM: By Thursday, a powerful upper trough will
be swinging out of the southern Plains. As it does, we will see
moisture surge back into Alabama. There could be a few showers and
storms Thursday afternoon. The timing on this system is uncertain,
with the latest model runs putting the best chance of rain on
Saturday. But we are going to hope that the rain is mostly over by
Friday night for high school football. This would also be good for
the racing events at Talladega Saturday and Sunday.

NEXT WEEKEND: We are going to hope for improving weather on Saturday,
but that is not really clear at this time. We will call for
decreasing rain chances based on the idea that the main rain should be
on Friday. This should mean decent conditions for the Magic City
Classic on Saturday, trick or treating on Saturday night and the
Talladega Race on Sunday.

WEATHERBRAINS: Monday night's show will feature a reunion of
meteorologists from the vintage PBS show A.M. Weather. Hear Joan von
Ahn, Carl Weiss, and NWA President Elect Steve Zubrick. Go to www.WeatherBrains.com
or subscribe on iTunes. Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: Pacific Hurricane Kenna made landfall on the
west coast of Mexico near the fishing village of San Blas, between
Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan around midday. Kenna weakened slightly
after reaching peak intensity of 165 mph as a Category 5 storm.
Packing winds of 140 mph at landfall, Kenna dealt a glancing blow to
the resort area of Puerto Vallarta. Huge waves pounded the shore,
damaged buildings and homes and brought down trees and power lines.
One person was killed and 54 injured. Kenna was the third strongest
hurricane to strike the Mexican coast since 1949.

...Nice Looking Sunday...

Get ready for a nice fall Sunday across Central Alabama. After a
frosty start across much of the area, plenty of sunshine will lead to
temperatures in the upper 60s to lower 70s this afternoon. Look for
40s tonight under fair skies.

START TO THE WORK WEEK: Monday will be a nice day again, with partly
cloudy skies and a high in the 70s. A developing storm system to the
west of Alabama will present a chance of showers and a slight chance
of a storm on Tuesday. The models have been flip-flopping back and
forth on the intensity of this system, so we will have to see. Expect
a tenth to one quarter inch of rain. Wednesday should be partly
cloudy and mild with increasing clouds late in the say ahead of a
stronger storm system. Rain could actually arrive late Wednesday
night across the area, but the timing is still up in the air.

STRONG STORMS AT WEEK'S END: The more powerful upper system will
swing into the Central Plains by Thursday. It may become negatively
tilted by Thursday night, putting Alabama in a favorable position for
strong to severe storms. Still a lot of uncertainly about this
forecast, but it is something that will have to be watched. The rain
should depart early Friday morning.

NEXT WEEKEND: Looks like good weather for high school football Friday
night, a beautiful Saturday for events at Talladega and perfect Trick
or Treating weather Saturday night. Te models have gotten more
aggressive with moisture return for Sunday,
introducing the idea of showers for the big race, but I wouldn't worry
just yet.

TROPICS: The disturbance over the Bahamas is being absorbed by the
frontal system east of Florida. The disturbance over the western
Caribbean has petered out. Elsewhere in the Atlantic, there is
nothing of consequence to talk about.

UPCOMING WEATHERBRAINS GUESTS: This week, it's an A.M. Weather
Reunion, featuring meteorologists from the PBS show from the 70s and
80s. Next week, it will be legendary severe weather researcher Dr.
Chuck Doswell, followed by Storm Chaser and Wind Engineer
extraordinaire Tim Marshall. Mike Smith, the President of Weather
Data, Inc. will visit on November 16th. Follow WeatherBrains on
Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 2005: The Old Fire was started by arsonists in San
Bernandino County, California. It would burn 91,200 acres before
being contained in early November as fire fighters received an assist
from precipitation. The Old Fire destroyed 850 homes and 10
commercial buildings. It forced the evacuation of the entire San
Bernadino Mountain Range. The mass exodus of 80,000 created a twenty
eight mile traffic jam. Several foothills communities had to be
evacuated also. On this first day of the fire, four hundred homes
burned. The final toll from this single fire was nearly $700
million. High temperatures over 90F, low humidities and gusty winds
made for a terrible fire month in Southern California. The resulting
fires killed twenty people, injured another 157 and caused 1.86
billion in damage.
