...Nice Labor Day Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! It is hard to believe that one week ago, I was on the
Mississippi Gulf Coast ahead of terrible Hurricane Katrina. It has been a
very sad week, with disturbing reports of destruction and human suffering.
It seems that relief efforts are really starting to come together now. Next
comes the long process of rebuilding.

IN THE TROPICS: By the time you read this, Maria will be a hurricane.
After a disaster such as Katrina, people along the coast become apprehensive
at the mere mention of another storm. "That thing is not coming here, is
it," they say. Maria shouldn't threaten any land areas. The are now in the
peak period of tropical cyclone activity in the Atlantic. We continue to
monitor an area of disturbed weather off the East Coast of Florida, which
could develop over time. The afternoon run of the GFS develops a weak low
over South Florida and carries it across the Gulf toward the Middle Gulf
Coast. The output doesn't make it very strong, thank goodness. It could
increase showers over our area by week's end.

THE WEEK AHEAD: High pressure will remain in control of Alabama's weather
through midweek. The large anticyclone will slide eastward with time.
Alabama will stay in a northeasterly or easterly flow for the next few days.
The wind flow will shift around to the southeast by the end of the week. In
the easterly flow, temperatures will be mild, very near normal. There could
be an increase in moisture with that flow, which could give us an increase
in clouds, but skies should remain partly cloudy for the most part. There
could be a few light showers, but things should remain dry through
Wednesday. .

ON THIS DAE IN 1996: The Space Shuttle Atlantis had to be rolled back from
its launch pad at Cape Canaveral as Hurricane Fran threatened the East Coast
of Florida. Because of the amount of time that it takes to move a shuttle
back to safety from the pad, NASA officials have to be very conservative in
their decision process. The Space Shuttles have been rolled back from the
pad thirteen times. Four of the moves have been because of tropical storms.

GOOD AFTERNOON: It has been a beautiful start to the Labor Day weekend here
across North Alabama. A broad northeasterly flow around high pressure over
the Great Lakes has given us a dry flow of lower dewpoints. Dewpoint values
are in the upper 50s to lower 60s, which is much more comfortable than those
mid and upper 70s to which we had become accustomed. Even though the
humidities are low, it is still quite warm with temperatures in the upper
80s.

OVERNIGHT LOWS: Temperatures overnight fell into the 60s over all of North
and Central Alabama. Fort Payne, Meridianville and Cullman all checked in
with 50 degrees, making them the winners for lowest overnight reading among
official reporting stations.

OUR FORECAST: High pressure will remain in control of Alabama's weather for
the foreseeable future. As we move toward Sunday and Monday, this high will
slide to the east, setting the stage for an easterly wind flow over Alabama.
This will keep us in a relatively dry flow and keep temperatures mild, just
about normal for this time of the year. So get used to the comfortable
early September conditions. They will be with us for several days. Skies
should remain mostly sunny to partly cloudy through the week ahead, but with
the easterly flow, we can't rule out the possibility of some periods of low
clouds.. Rain chances should remain nearly nil through midweek, although
there could be a few light showers in the easterly flow. A slight chance of
PM showers and storms may return by the end of the week when southeasterly
winds allow moisture levels to increase somewhat.

IN THE TROPICS: Tropical Storm Maria is jus over 800 miles southeast of
Bermuda this afternoon. Maria is expected to pass about 400 miles east of
the island nation on Monday as it moves north. It is expected to become a
hurricane. If it does, it will be the fourth hurricane of the 2005 season.
There have been a total of thirteen named storms so far. Disturbed weather
off the East Coast of Florida is being monitored for possible tropical
development. The impressive wave in the Central Atlantic has died down.
The remnants of Lee is northeast of Bermuda. It should not redevelop.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Alabama hosts Middle Tennessee State at 6 pm in
Tuscaloosa and Georgia Tech visits Auburn at 7:45 pm. Expect excellent
conditions with warm temperatures in the middle 80s, but low humidities at
game time. Winds will be easterly but light. Rain chance: 0%.

ON THIS DATE IN 1658: A young Sir Issac Newton conducted his own childhood
experiment on determining windspeed during the great storm of September 3,
1658, the day of Oliver Cromwell's death. His method was to jump with the
wind at his back and then against the wind. He determined that the storm
was "a foot stronger" than any other he had measured.

ON THIS DATE IN 1870: Coffeyville, Kansas is struck by a hailstorm that
dumps a hailstone weighing 1.67 pounds and measuring 17.5 inches in
circumference. It would be the largest ever recorded in the United States
until 2003, when a larger stone fell near Aurora, KS.

ABC 33/40 E-Forecast - Special Note

This is a special note to E-Forecast subscribers concerning a
service for evacuees in Alabama:

ABC 33/40 is now carrying WWL-TV (Channel 4) in New Orleans LIVE on
our digital channels 33.2 and 40.2. This is for the thousands of evacuees
who are in Alabama; allowing them to watch local news coverage of this
horrible tragedy from a home town station. The WWL-TV feed from ABC 33/40 is
being carried on Bright House Cable in Birmingham on Channel 632, and
Comcast Cable in Tuscaloosa on Channel 99. The signal, of course, can be
received right off the air if you have a digital TV tuner on 33.2 or 40.2

Many shelters across central Alabama have put up large screen TV
sets with digital tuners in place that are picking up our WWL-TV simulcast
directly off the air on either 33.2 or 40.2.

You can also watch the WWL-TV feed over the Internet:
http://www.wwltv.com

Of course, evacuees here don't have laptop computers or high speed
internet connections in most cases, so our digital WWL-TV simulcast is their
lifeline to news from home they need to know.

...A Calm Weekend...

GOOD MORNING: One week ago today, we were nervously watching the Gulf of
Mexico, monitoring the progress of dangerous Hurricane Katrina. Even
Saturday, there were clear signs that it might be a disaster of
unprecedented proportions. By Sunday, it was clear that a catastrophe was
looming. Now, we realize that it is the greatest natural disaster in the
history of the United States with far reaching consequences.

NICE WEEKEND: On the weather maps this morning, we find surface high
pressure dominating the weather over the eastern half of the nation. The
double barreled anticyclone has centers over southern Illinois and western
Ontario in Canada. In the upper levels of the atmosphere, a large high
pressure system is over the western Gulf of Mexico. All this high pressure
will keep Alabama dry during the weekend and through Labor Day. Dry air is
flowing into the state, and this is allowing dewpoints to make a nice
retreat into the 50s. This will make some comfortable overnights and early
mornings.

NEXT WEEK: By Tuesday, we will have a nice wedge setup over Alabama. This
is when high pressure to the northeast of the state sends a moist,
relatively cool easterly flow down the east side of the Appalachians and
into Alabama. Lows in the 50s will be prevalent through midweek over
eastern sections with comfortable readings near 60 even across West Alabama.

TROPICS: Tropical Depression Lee is wandering northward over the middle
Atlantic. Tropical Storm Maria is a little southwest of Lee, and also
moving northward. Both pose no threat to land.

ON THIS DATE IN 1821: The Long Island Hurricane is the only hurricane to
directly strike the area which is currently New York City. The Category 3
hurricane raised the water level at the Battery to thirteen feet above
normal sea level. The East River and Hudson Rivers reportedly merged,
inundating Manhattan to Canal Street. A similar storm today is a worst case
scenario for preparedness officials. A similar storm striking Manhattan
today would result in countless fatalities and $50 billion in damage.

A UTOPIA WEEKEND: The week that was! A lot of people went through the week
with far too little sleep. Hurricane Katrina will put a bad taste in our
mouth for as long as we live. She was a bad girl of the first order.

Astounded to hear a Louisiana State Senator predict this afternoon that the
death toll in Louisiana alone will exceed 10,000. Hard to believe.

In the wake of such a bad week, we can at least look forward to a classic
weekend, weatherwise. Here in Alabama that means clear nights and sunny days
with lower humidity. A nice high pressure area for early September will be
getting stronger over the Eastern USA. This will set up a "wedge" effect
where Alabama will get drier and slightly cooler air from the east. We
don't see any more nighttime lows in the muggy 70s for awhile. By Sunday,
our daily high temperatures will back off to the upper 80s. Lows from Sunday
through Tuesday will be in the lower 60s and we can almost guarantee some
50s in the NE Alabama valleys.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Yes, it is that time of year again. Clear weather is
expected for the UAB-Tennessee game in Knoxville Saturday with kickoff
temperatures around 82. Alabama-Middle Tennessee State and Auburn-Georgia
are home games at night. For the 6 pm kickoff in Tuscaloosa about 86 degrees
and at 7:45 in Auburn, 78.

DISASTER AREA WEATHER: Not as many showers over the weekend and early next
week. Even the high temperatures will back off to about 88-90 by Monday.

TROPICAL: TD No. 13 has grown into Tropical Storm Maria, the 13th named
storm of 2005. No threat to land. TD No. 14 was 880 miles ENE of the
Northern Leeward Island. Meanwhile Tropical Storm Lee degenerated into an
ordinary low pressure area 700 miles east of Bermuda. Probably will not
survive.

FINAL FRIDAY NOTES: 25 AT West Yellowstone, Montana was the lower 48 cold
spot this morning...that was two degrees colder than the 27 degree low in
Nenana, Alaska...an extreme heat wave was setting in across Alabama on this
date in 1925 when there was little or no air conditioning.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: For some reason, I got up at 4 this morning,
possibly a leftover from mixed up hours during the hurricane. I decided to
go back to bed at 8 for a 90-minute power nap. I shut the door to the master
bedroom to keep Molly out. You should have seen the look on her face. She
looked at me like that was the ultimate insult to her but I knew she would
want to romp on the bed and keep me awake. When I got up and opened the
door, she was lying tightly against the door waiting for me. She had also
gathered a bunch of her favorite toys and had them against the door. She is
as clever as they come. Even though I was behind on my work and daydreaming
about coffee, I played with the little rascal. Life goes on, irregular at
times, but I love it.

...Dry Days; Cooler Nights...

Our forecast for next seven days is a dry one. No rain through the middle of
next week with sunny days and clear pleasant nights. Early morning
temperatures will drop into the 60s, with some upper 50s possible in the
cooler valleys of north Alabama. Daytime highs should drop a few degrees by
Sunday and Monday as cooler air drains in here from the northeast.

TROPICS: The Atlantic is very active. Tropical depression Lee dissipated
last night in the north Atlantic. Tropical depression 14 is moving slowly to
the northwest over the central Atlantic and is no threat to land at this
time.

Catching our attention is a strong tropical wave about halfway between the
coast of Africa and the Lesser Antilles. This has the potential to develop
into a tropical storm over the next few days as it moves to the west. Too
early to determine if this will keep moving into the Caribbean, or recurve
into the open Atlantic.

The good news is that the Gulf of Mexico is relatively quiet, and should
stay that way through the weekend. I do have concern that there will be one
or more hurricanes threatening some segment of the Gulf coast before the
season winds down.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: A clear sky for both the Alabama/Middle Tennessee State
game in Tuscaloosa (6:00 kickoff) and the Auburn/Georgia Tech game at
Jordan-Hare Stadium tomorrow night (7:45 kickoff). Temperatures will fall
into the 70s at both sites. UAB travels to Tennessee for an 11:30 a.m. game.
The sky will be sunny in Knoxville with a kickoff temperature of 82 degrees.

For tonight's high school games, the sky will be clear with temperatures in
the low 80s at kickoff, falling into the 70s during the games.

DRY WITH COOLER NIGHTS: I guess that is about the best weather we
could ask for in early September. It can be real hot this late in the
season. As we have mentioned many times, the hottest official temperature
ever recorded in Alabama occurred on September 5, 1925, a blistering 112 in
Centreville.

Absolutely no danger of that this year. Instead, look for mostly
sunshine for at least the next 5 to 7 days with generally lower daytime
humidity and pleasantly cool nights.

We know the main story is hurricane recovery, but let us pause for a
moment to celebrate a few low temperatures this morning.

56 at DeSoto State Park (Little River Canyon)
59 in Hamilton and Ft. Payne
60 in Talladega
61 in Decatur, Huntsville, Anniston, Cullman
62 in Cherokee (Colbert County) and Moulton
63 in Birmingham, Wedowee and Helena
We have an unofficial report of 55 degrees in Cullman County near
the Clarkson covered bridge.

DISASTER AREA WEATHER: Just what they do not need-some rather
strong thunderstorms prowling through the New Orleans this afternoon with
dangerous lightning. Those should thin out greatly tomorrow, but it is still
going to reach 90 or hotter each day. In the Biloxi-Gulfport-Mobile area,
only a small risk of a thunderstorm Friday with highs 93 to 95.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Where, oh, where is Katrina? She has left the
country. She will be remembered as long as we live. The Atlantic is still
quite active. Tropical Depression Lee was 780 miles east of Bermuda with no
threat to land. Meanwhile, Tropical Depression 14 was over 1,000 miles east
of the northern Leeward Islands. An area of disturbed weather with a
tropical wave was way, way out. It is well organized and may become a
Tropical Depression during the next day or two.

THURSDAY THOUGHTS: 114 in Death Valley Wednesday was the
hottest...it was 25 this morning at the west entrance to Yellowstone
National Park...even Caribou, Maine, was affected by Katrina. Two inches of
rain.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I should be ashamed of myself. I was
so glued to television coverage of the disaster areas that I drank 8 cups of
coffee and completely ignored Little Miss Molly this morning. She knew it,
too. She kept coming in my weather office and looking up at me with those
little persuasive eyes wanting to play ball. She sat there looking so lonely
and wagged her tail very slowly. She finally jumped up in my lap and wanted
to get on my desk. She sat right by my keyboard for a long time looking out
the window and then stretched out as flat as a pancake on my desk for an
hour-long nap. Little did she know that I was writing this story about her
only inches away. Life goes on.

...A String of Sunny Days...

Dry air will cover the northern half of Alabama for the foreseeable future.
This means a strong of sunny days ahead, with hot afternoons, pleasant
nights, and lower humidity levels.

Cooler should begin to drain into the state late this weekend and early next
week, and the mercury should drop into the 60 to 63 degree range by Monday
and Tuesday morning. Some of the cooler spots could reach the upper 50s
then.

TROPICS: Tropical depression 13 regenerated yesterday in the Atlantic, and
was upgraded to Tropical Storm Lee late in the day. Lee is in the middle of
the Atlantic, about 900 miles east of the island of Bermuda, and is moving
to the north-northeast. Lee is no threat to land at this time.

Elsewhere, two other strong waves over the eastern Atlantic have the
potential to become depressions during the next day or so. The next named
storms will be called Maria and Nate.

The Gulf of Mexico is relatively quiet and no tropical systems are expected
through early next week. Sea water temperatures over the central and eastern
Gulf have cooled a bit due to upwelling from Katrina. Upwelling is the
result of wave action pulling up cooler water from below the sea surface,
and is common after major hurricanes.

POWER UPDATE: As of last night, 234,809 Alabama Power customers remained
without power, down from a peak Monday night of 636,891. The goal is for 99
percent of the Birmingham service area to be restored by the end of the day
Friday.

ROAMING: Rain totals from those in the path of Katrina yesterday included
3.35" at Syracuse, NY, 3.02" at Rochester, NY, and 2.99" at Buffalo, NY. An
F1 tornado touched down late last night near Gettysburg, PA.

I want to start off with a few personal thoughts on this pleasant Wednesday
afternoon. The pleasant part is the weather here in Alabama, but my thoughts
are along the Gulf Coast where a tragedy of unbelievable proportions
continues to unfold. The mayor of New Orleans now believes that fatalities
may number in the thousands. I sit here and watch all the TV pictures and it
makes me wish I could help. It is good to hear that the Birmingham Fire
Department and the Hoover Fire Department are sending heavy rescue teams to
Gulfport. They departed today. My son, Steve, is a fireman with Birmingham
Station One downtown. He is a part of that team. There are numerous other
firemen going from the two departments. They will work in teams around the
clock under the direction of FEMA focusing on rescue and recovery of people
possibly buried.

BACK TO ALABAMA WEATHER: While there will be a few scattered showers and
storms along the coast, the weather across Central and North Alabama is
going to be very welcome for probably a week. Eventually a high pressure
area will build down over the Appalachians and NE and send some slightly
cooler and drier air westward into Alabama. We will start feeling some of
that tonight as temperatures drop into the mid 60s. By the weekend, our
highs shall retreat to the upper 80s. It is not often that we can word the
forecast exactly the same for so many days. For the next five days, simply
two words, "mostly sunny."

TROPICAL WEATHER: Who would have thought that Saranac Lake in far north New
York State would get more rain from Katrina than Birmingham? Heavy rain has
been falling there today. Katrina is no longer a tropical storm or even a
tropical depression. She is an ordinary low pressure area, but still
stubbornly causing problems over a wide area. She was centered over northern
New York and moving rapidly NE. It is windy over a broad area because of
her. Even atop Mt. Washington, New Hampshire, SE winds were gusting well
over 60 mph. Along the way, Katrina dumped 16.33 inches of rain at Perrine,
Florida, 14.82 at Big Branch, Louisiana, 9.82 at Hancock, Mississippi, 6.44
at Red Bay, Alabama and 5.84 at Lima, Ohio.

Meanwhile, old tropical depression 13 that had fizzled, has reformed into a
depression 890 miles ESE of Bermuda. Movement should be north-no threat to
land.

FINAL NOTES: I have been prowling this morning. I even visited far north
Canada mentally and found 17 degrees at Alert, the northernmost weather
station in North America. It is getting colder over Northern Canada-another
sign of the season...it was 25 this morning in Stanley, Idaho and in
Yellowstone Park.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Wish you could see Little Miss Molly get out
of bed every morning. She is a whole lot like me. She can wake up in a
perfectly good mood. Some people take an hour or two to get going, but she
is ready on the spot. First thing she does is moan and stretch a couple of
times and then that tail starts wagging like an airplane propeller. She then
checks out every square foot of our house, looks out every window and sniffs
at the door to see if anybody is passing. She is immediately ready for a
ballgame, but minutes later she will ring that tiny bell vigorously needing
to go outside. It is amazing how simple life is for Molly. After each walk,
she is just as elated to get a little treat as a human kid on the way to the
beach. I even get excited walking the same track with her day after day.
Life goes on, easier with Molly around.

...Dry Days for Alabama...

In the wake of Katrina a very dry pattern is setting up across Alabama
during the next five to seven days. I guess we can't say the chance of an
afternoon shower for any one spot is zero, but it is less than ten percent,
and not really worth mentioning in our forecast package for now. Highs will
be close to 90, lows in the 67 to 67 degree range. Not too far from normal
for late August and early September in Alabama.

KATRINA TWISTERS: The National Weather Service in Birmingham reports the
damage in Calhoun county Monday afternoon was the result of an F1 tornado
embedded in a spiral band on the east side of Katrina. That tornado was on
the ground for 1.5 miles in the vicinity of White Plains (east of Anniston).
Other F0 tornadoes touched down in Macon and eastern Montgomery counties
during the storm.

KATRINA WINDS: Here are some peak wind gusts reported from Katrina:

Birmingham 52 mph
Muscle Shoals 47 mph
Tuscaloosa 47 mph
Montgomery 45 mph
Anniston 43 mph

POWER OUTAGES: At one point, 636,891 Alabama Power customers had no power,
making Katrina the second worst storm in their history (second to Ivan). As
of late last night, 355,723 were still in the dark.

NEW ORLEANS: New Orleans Ray Nagin expects water in downtown New Orleans to
rise to the level of Lake Ponchartrain today, meaning much of the city will
be under 5 to 10 feet of water. A true catastrophe.

KATRINA: What a name and what a reputation! She will go down in history and
I am sure the name will be retired. That is official policy with a hurricane
of this intensity. Like a super-star ball player having their jersey number
retired.

Even we in the weather community, who have lived and worked through all
kinds of historic weather events, will never, ever forget Miss Katrina.

And, I want to voice a complaint. I wish people would learn to not jump the
gun and report that this or that hurricane was not as bad as forecast. Won't
they ever learn that in the heat of battle, noone can tell for sure what is
going on in the middle of a major hurricane.

We on the outside looking in should be thankful. WKRG-TV, Mobile filmed an
interview with a gentleman and his young son on the Mississippi Coast. The
husband had desperately hung onto his wife trying to keep her from being
swept away in rushing flood water. She slipped away. A wife and mother gone
forever. The interview simply makes one want to cry. For the rest of my
life, if I ever want to complain, I am going to flashback to that image and
snap back to reality. And, while on my soapbox, I sure hope that WWL Radio,
AM 870 gets a national award. When I finally got in bed at 2 this morning, I
turned on WWL and the coverage and service to the community is awesome. I
have been listening since I was a kid.

I guess I should discuss local weather. It is definitely on the upswing and
that is good news. It will help recovery efforts in Mobile and Gulf Shores
but also inland.

I asked a friend in the nursery business once to come up with an estimate of
how many trees are in Alabama. I can't remember if his final answer was one
billion or three billion. I have been wondering how many of those were
uprooted in the last 24 hours. I feel sure it is in the thousands.

Here in Central Alabama, we could see just a few showers later this
afternoon and tonight. After that, it looks like a nice stretch of dry
weather on through the weekend. Most days will feature mostly sunshine and
high temperatures will not be that bad. Especially when we see the great
discomfort in the heavy damage areas with no air conditioning, no water and
no city services.

FINAL THOUGHTS: Bill Murray and Brian Peters can't be human. They were
mostly "sleepless at the seasside at the coast during Katrina.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly and I were delighted on our
early morning walk to see that the Old Crow Motel survived last night's
extended high winds. The OCM is the tallest "high rise" on our walking
track. But decay has sent in at the roots and one of these days it will come
crashing down. We pause there every morning and admire its stark beauty
backlighted against the rising sun. I have a lot of making up to do with
Molly. Ignored her for two days. But, life goes on.

...Goodbye Katrina!...

GOOD MORNING! We will not remember her fondly. It seems like all too
often lately I have been saying, "It has been a long 72 hours in Alabama
thanks to Hurricane (fill in the blank.) Alright, let's go back to the 70s
and 80s and below normal hurricane activity. Who turned on the switch and
started this mess...

KATRINA ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS: She had an inauspicious beginning. The
twelfth tropical depression of the Atlantic Hurricane Season formed over the
Bahamas. There was controversy right away as to whether the new low was
part of the old wave that was tropical depression ten. Katrina turned west
toward the Florida Peninsula and made landfall north of Miami Beach on the
25th of August. Moving in an unusual southwest direction, the storm quickly
cleared Florida, strengthening as she went and popped out into the Gulf of
Mexico. The storm intensified rapidly on Saturday night into a Category
Five monster by Sunday morning. Luckily, its intensity backed off just a
shade and it passed far enough east of New Orleans to prevent the much
talked about Armageddon. See how Katrina ranks in the annals in today's
Weather Talk blog.

REST OF THE WEEK: Conditions should quickly begin to improve this morning
across the area. Winds will gradually diminish and skies will become partly
cloudy overnight. High pressure will build in across the area by midweek,
giving us fine end of summer weather. Temperatures will be near normal
levels. The Labor Day weekend is ahead and the weather looks fine for the
weekend also. High pressure will dominate our weather right on into next
Monday. Temperatures will be normal for this time of year.
