GOOD AFTERNOON: It has been a beautiful start to the Labor Day weekend here
across North Alabama. A broad northeasterly flow around high pressure over
the Great Lakes has given us a dry flow of lower dewpoints. Dewpoint values
are in the upper 50s to lower 60s, which is much more comfortable than those
mid and upper 70s to which we had become accustomed. Even though the
humidities are low, it is still quite warm with temperatures in the upper
80s.

OVERNIGHT LOWS: Temperatures overnight fell into the 60s over all of North
and Central Alabama. Fort Payne, Meridianville and Cullman all checked in
with 50 degrees, making them the winners for lowest overnight reading among
official reporting stations.

OUR FORECAST: High pressure will remain in control of Alabama's weather for
the foreseeable future. As we move toward Sunday and Monday, this high will
slide to the east, setting the stage for an easterly wind flow over Alabama.
This will keep us in a relatively dry flow and keep temperatures mild, just
about normal for this time of the year. So get used to the comfortable
early September conditions. They will be with us for several days. Skies
should remain mostly sunny to partly cloudy through the week ahead, but with
the easterly flow, we can't rule out the possibility of some periods of low
clouds.. Rain chances should remain nearly nil through midweek, although
there could be a few light showers in the easterly flow. A slight chance of
PM showers and storms may return by the end of the week when southeasterly
winds allow moisture levels to increase somewhat.

IN THE TROPICS: Tropical Storm Maria is jus over 800 miles southeast of
Bermuda this afternoon. Maria is expected to pass about 400 miles east of
the island nation on Monday as it moves north. It is expected to become a
hurricane. If it does, it will be the fourth hurricane of the 2005 season.
There have been a total of thirteen named storms so far. Disturbed weather
off the East Coast of Florida is being monitored for possible tropical
development. The impressive wave in the Central Atlantic has died down.
The remnants of Lee is northeast of Bermuda. It should not redevelop.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Alabama hosts Middle Tennessee State at 6 pm in
Tuscaloosa and Georgia Tech visits Auburn at 7:45 pm. Expect excellent
conditions with warm temperatures in the middle 80s, but low humidities at
game time. Winds will be easterly but light. Rain chance: 0%.

ON THIS DATE IN 1658: A young Sir Issac Newton conducted his own childhood
experiment on determining windspeed during the great storm of September 3,
1658, the day of Oliver Cromwell's death. His method was to jump with the
wind at his back and then against the wind. He determined that the storm
was "a foot stronger" than any other he had measured.

ON THIS DATE IN 1870: Coffeyville, Kansas is struck by a hailstorm that
dumps a hailstone weighing 1.67 pounds and measuring 17.5 inches in
circumference. It would be the largest ever recorded in the United States
until 2003, when a larger stone fell near Aurora, KS.
