...A Calm Weekend...

GOOD MORNING: One week ago today, we were nervously watching the Gulf of
Mexico, monitoring the progress of dangerous Hurricane Katrina. Even
Saturday, there were clear signs that it might be a disaster of
unprecedented proportions. By Sunday, it was clear that a catastrophe was
looming. Now, we realize that it is the greatest natural disaster in the
history of the United States with far reaching consequences.

NICE WEEKEND: On the weather maps this morning, we find surface high
pressure dominating the weather over the eastern half of the nation. The
double barreled anticyclone has centers over southern Illinois and western
Ontario in Canada. In the upper levels of the atmosphere, a large high
pressure system is over the western Gulf of Mexico. All this high pressure
will keep Alabama dry during the weekend and through Labor Day. Dry air is
flowing into the state, and this is allowing dewpoints to make a nice
retreat into the 50s. This will make some comfortable overnights and early
mornings.

NEXT WEEK: By Tuesday, we will have a nice wedge setup over Alabama. This
is when high pressure to the northeast of the state sends a moist,
relatively cool easterly flow down the east side of the Appalachians and
into Alabama. Lows in the 50s will be prevalent through midweek over
eastern sections with comfortable readings near 60 even across West Alabama.

TROPICS: Tropical Depression Lee is wandering northward over the middle
Atlantic. Tropical Storm Maria is a little southwest of Lee, and also
moving northward. Both pose no threat to land.

ON THIS DATE IN 1821: The Long Island Hurricane is the only hurricane to
directly strike the area which is currently New York City. The Category 3
hurricane raised the water level at the Battery to thirteen feet above
normal sea level. The East River and Hudson Rivers reportedly merged,
inundating Manhattan to Canal Street. A similar storm today is a worst case
scenario for preparedness officials. A similar storm striking Manhattan
today would result in countless fatalities and $50 billion in damage.
