...Dry Days for Alabama...

In the wake of Katrina a very dry pattern is setting up across Alabama
during the next five to seven days. I guess we can't say the chance of an
afternoon shower for any one spot is zero, but it is less than ten percent,
and not really worth mentioning in our forecast package for now. Highs will
be close to 90, lows in the 67 to 67 degree range. Not too far from normal
for late August and early September in Alabama.

KATRINA TWISTERS: The National Weather Service in Birmingham reports the
damage in Calhoun county Monday afternoon was the result of an F1 tornado
embedded in a spiral band on the east side of Katrina. That tornado was on
the ground for 1.5 miles in the vicinity of White Plains (east of Anniston).
Other F0 tornadoes touched down in Macon and eastern Montgomery counties
during the storm.

KATRINA WINDS: Here are some peak wind gusts reported from Katrina:

Birmingham 52 mph
Muscle Shoals 47 mph
Tuscaloosa 47 mph
Montgomery 45 mph
Anniston 43 mph

POWER OUTAGES: At one point, 636,891 Alabama Power customers had no power,
making Katrina the second worst storm in their history (second to Ivan). As
of late last night, 355,723 were still in the dark.

NEW ORLEANS: New Orleans Ray Nagin expects water in downtown New Orleans to
rise to the level of Lake Ponchartrain today, meaning much of the city will
be under 5 to 10 feet of water. A true catastrophe.
