A UTOPIA WEEKEND: The week that was! A lot of people went through the week
with far too little sleep. Hurricane Katrina will put a bad taste in our
mouth for as long as we live. She was a bad girl of the first order.

Astounded to hear a Louisiana State Senator predict this afternoon that the
death toll in Louisiana alone will exceed 10,000. Hard to believe.

In the wake of such a bad week, we can at least look forward to a classic
weekend, weatherwise. Here in Alabama that means clear nights and sunny days
with lower humidity. A nice high pressure area for early September will be
getting stronger over the Eastern USA. This will set up a "wedge" effect
where Alabama will get drier and slightly cooler air from the east. We
don't see any more nighttime lows in the muggy 70s for awhile. By Sunday,
our daily high temperatures will back off to the upper 80s. Lows from Sunday
through Tuesday will be in the lower 60s and we can almost guarantee some
50s in the NE Alabama valleys.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Yes, it is that time of year again. Clear weather is
expected for the UAB-Tennessee game in Knoxville Saturday with kickoff
temperatures around 82. Alabama-Middle Tennessee State and Auburn-Georgia
are home games at night. For the 6 pm kickoff in Tuscaloosa about 86 degrees
and at 7:45 in Auburn, 78.

DISASTER AREA WEATHER: Not as many showers over the weekend and early next
week. Even the high temperatures will back off to about 88-90 by Monday.

TROPICAL: TD No. 13 has grown into Tropical Storm Maria, the 13th named
storm of 2005. No threat to land. TD No. 14 was 880 miles ENE of the
Northern Leeward Island. Meanwhile Tropical Storm Lee degenerated into an
ordinary low pressure area 700 miles east of Bermuda. Probably will not
survive.

FINAL FRIDAY NOTES: 25 AT West Yellowstone, Montana was the lower 48 cold
spot this morning...that was two degrees colder than the 27 degree low in
Nenana, Alaska...an extreme heat wave was setting in across Alabama on this
date in 1925 when there was little or no air conditioning.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: For some reason, I got up at 4 this morning,
possibly a leftover from mixed up hours during the hurricane. I decided to
go back to bed at 8 for a 90-minute power nap. I shut the door to the master
bedroom to keep Molly out. You should have seen the look on her face. She
looked at me like that was the ultimate insult to her but I knew she would
want to romp on the bed and keep me awake. When I got up and opened the
door, she was lying tightly against the door waiting for me. She had also
gathered a bunch of her favorite toys and had them against the door. She is
as clever as they come. Even though I was behind on my work and daydreaming
about coffee, I played with the little rascal. Life goes on, irregular at
times, but I love it.
