GOOD AFTERNOON: Alabama will be experiencing the hottest weather it has seen in quite some time through Monday as high pressure continues to be basically in control. A Heat Advisory is in effect for Central Alabama through Sunday as the hottest temperatures of this heat wave occur. Readings today and tomorrow will range between 95-99 degrees, with heat indices of 100-110 degrees. A few locations in West Alabama might touch 100 degrees, with heat indices above 110F. The steamy conditions will even continue into the overnight hours, with readings in the warm middle 70s, so don't expect much of a respite even at night. Take it easy and stay hydrated during this hot spell.

The excessively hot weather will continue through Tuesday, but some relief is in sight as a weak front sags down into Alabama for midweek, bringing showers and slightly cooler readings.

A few factors are keeping the mercury from going completely crazy with widespread 100 degree readings. First, we have had a wet July. This means a good deal of the Sun’s energy goes into evaporating ground moisture.

Secondly, there still is quite a bit of low level moisture, which means at least some clouds. Still, if you must be outside for the next few days, please take it easy. Take frequent breaks in the shade and stay hydrated.

ORANGE OZONE ALERT: A Level Orange Air Quality Alert is in effect for Sunday across the area. Everyone will want to restrict their outdoor exertions during the heat of the day. Also, put off mowing your lawn with gas mowers and try to limit your vehicle usage. This will help reduce ozone emissions.

A LITTLE FORECASTER HUMOR: Hurricane Specialist James L. Franklin added a funny to his morning Tropical Cyclone Discussion on Tropical Storm Franklin: FRANKLIN...THE STORM...NOT THE FORECASTER...HAS BECOME A LITTLE BETTER ORGANIZED OVERNIGHT. And he concluded with: IT IS QUITE POSSIBLE THAT LITTLE OR NOTHING WILL BE LEFT OF FRANKLIN...THE STORM...NOT THE FORECASTER...IN 2-3 DAYS.

TRACKING FRANKLIN: As you can tell from the first part of the above discussion, our Tropical Storm is a little more organized today. It will likely become a hurricane shortly. But the forecast is a complicated one. The storm is responding to a trough of low pressure that is passing to the north of the tropical cyclone. The tropical storm is moving to the north northeast. As it does, Franklin is expected to strengthen a tad before increasing shear begins to weaken it (hence the second half of the funny.) Franklin should continue moving out to the east northeast over the North Atlantic eventually, but don’t be surprised if it even does a crazy loop-de-loops before heading out to sea.

ANOTHER RECORD: Franklin continued the trend of its predecessors by being the earliest F named storm in history when it formed on Thursday. The previous earliest sixth tropical storm that I could find was 1995’s Felix. Felix formed on August 8th.

...Dangerously Hot Temps...

GOOD MORNING! Along with much of the country, Alabama will be in the grip
of a mid-July heat wave the next couple of days. The heat will really begin
in earnest today, as the mercury rises into the middle to upper 90s. Some
locations may even see 100 degrees today, especially across western sections
of the state. Readings will be a couple of degrees hotter on Sunday.

Heat indices will reach 105 to 110 degrees in some locations today, Sunday
and perhaps Monday. The heat is happening because of a ridge of high
pressure that continues across the southeastern United States. Showers and
storms will be very isolated for the next couple of days due to the ridge of
high pressure. Any storms that do form will be quite strong, however.

LOOKING BACK: If the temperature reaches 96 today, it will be the warmest
reading since September 11, 2002 in Birmingham. It has not been 100
degrees or hotter in the Magic City since August 29, 2000. The mercury
reached 100 degrees or more on eight days during that hot summer.

AIR QUALITY ALERT: Today, air quality will be in the moderate range, but a
Code Orange Air Quality Alert is in effect for Sunday in Jefferson and
Shelby Counties. The Code Orange alert means that the air will be unhealthy
for sensitive groups. Active children and adults and people with lung
diseases should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion.

OUR FORECAST: Fortunately, the heat will subside back to normal summertime
levels by midweek of next week. Temperatures will return to near 90 for
daytime highs, with overnight lows in the lower to middle 70s.

FRANKLIN: Our tropical storm north of the Bahamas is going to move
northeast over the next couple of days and weaken with time. It should pose
no threat to the U.S.

ON THIS DATE IN 1898: A strong thunderstorm made street lamps necessary in
the middle of the afternoon in Atlanta. Over 4 inches of rain during the 2
hour thunderstorm caused a foot of water to flood Union Station.

HOTTEST SO FAR THIS SUMMER: We have not had any real hot weather so far
this summer due to above normal showers and thunderstorms. However, those
storms are going to thin out greatly over the weekend and the thermometer
will edge upward. This will be a time when you should check on the elderly
and keep a closer watch on your pets that are outdoors. The risk of a shower
or thunderstorm on Saturday is extremely small. You probably will not see
one. We omitted them from the Sunday forecast. However, in very hot weather
like this, there is always an outside chance of one popping up in the heat
of the afternoon.

High temperatures will be in the mid 90s Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Sunday
may be our hottest day. We are calling for a high of 96. Some parts of West
Alabama could be a degree or so hotter. Temperatures should back off a bit
on Tuesday as some scattered showers and storms come back.

I guess we're spoiled a bit. The official Birmingham temperature has not
been above 95 since September 2002. The heat index this weekend could reach
105 at times.

We don't think this is the start of a major heat wave. We don't consider a
heat wave critical until we have 100-degree plus temperatures for days on
end. We don't expect that at this time.

Thunderstorms this afternoon were the fewest in number they have been in
days. We do expect some scattered one to develop later this afternoon and
into the evening. Some spots could get heavy rain.

YESTERDAY'S STORMS: Much, much lightning produced scattered power outages.
For a time, the main street in Montevallo was closed due to flooding. Close
to 2 inches of rain fell in Gadsden and Prattville and a number of
communities received around 1 inch.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Franklin had sustained winds of 50 mph
centered 115 miles east of Freeport in the Bahamas. He was creeping
northward at 2 mph. The official track forecast lets him go north for a
while and then out toward the NE over the Atlantic avoiding the USA. Some of
the other models bring him across the Florida Peninsula. Elsewhere, a strong
tropical wave will move across the Yucatan Peninsula and then into the Bay
of Campeche (extreme SW Gulf of Mexico). At that time, Tropical Storm Girt
will probably be born. The water temperature in that area and all the way up
to east of Corpus Christi is still in the mid 80s.

AROUND THE USA: Denver is still cooking. They had 104 Thursday. They are
expecting that again today, but dropping off to 98 Saturday...123 in Death
Valley and 45 in Gunnison, Colorado were the USA extremes for the last 24
hours.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure am glad that my little 9-pound
stick-tight pal, little Miss Molly, is an inside dog with all this hot
weather. When we take a half-mile walk, her tongue and mine are hanging way
out. She comes in, grabs her treat and finds a cool spot on the cooler tile
instead of the carpet and stretches out full length. On our first walk this
morning, an oversized toadstool had sprung up overnight close to one of her
favorite spots to go to the bathroom. She approached with real caution and
circled it several times. She is spooked fairly easily...we have noticed
that the birds and crows are quiet as a mouse lately. Maybe it's the heat.
Maybe they are deep in the cooler underbrush and don't want to come out.
Life goes on whether there's frost on the ground or we're suffering in
100-plus heat.

...Summer Heat; Summer Storms...

The standard summer formula of sun, heat, humidity, and afternoon storms
will stay in our forecast today. Temperatures will reach the low 90s by
early afternoon, and slow moving thunderstorms will form in scattered spots
giving some neighborhoods heavy rain and some wicked lightning. The storms
then fade away once the sun sets later in the evening.

Not much change in this over the weekend, but warmer air aloft could mean
fewer afternoon storms and slightly hotter temperatures. We should point out
that the heat index could reach 100 degrees each afternoon due to the high
surface dewpoints that will remain in place.

TROPICS: Tropical storm Franklin formed late yesterday in the Atlantic, near
the Bahamas, and east of the Florida peninsula. Weak steering currents mean
Franklin won't show much net motion over the next four days, but it could
grow stronger, possibly reaching hurricane status over the weekend. There is
some chance Franklin could ultimately move toward the south Atlantic coast,
and everyone from Charleston south to Miami and Key West will need to watch
this one closely. Also a chance it could emerge in the Gulf of Mexico if it
tracks across the Florida peninsula.

Another strong wave in the western Caribbean could become tropical storm
Gert today; it will take a path similar to Emily not affecting the central
Gulf coast.

AT THE BEACH: Very typical summer weather for the Gulf coast this weekend;
about 7 to 9 hours of sun each day with scattered storms, and high
temperatures near 90.

MORE DOWNPOURS: Main street in Montevallo was closed for a while late
yesterday due to flooding.

===================================================================

...Hot Summer Days...

This is that time of the year when the weather doesn't change very much. You
can count on hot and humid days with lots of morning sunshine, and a few
afternoon downpours in scattered spots. The main difference in day to day
weather is the location and duration of the afternoon storms. Temperatures
aloft will be a little colder today, so showers and storms should be a
little more numerous by afternoon. But, it will still be a hit and miss
proposition with some neighborhoods getting over one inch of rain, and other
places no rain at all. Temperatures should peak in the low 90s, right at
normal levels for mid to late July.

WEEKEND PEEK: Afternoon temperatures might be a degree or two higher on
Saturday and Sunday, but once again the soil moisture should keep a pretty
decent part of the solar energy working on evaporation, keeping afternoon
temperatures mostly in the low to mid 90s. Keep in mind the surface
dewpoints will be very high, so heat index values will exceed 100 degrees at
times.

TROPICS: While Emily falls apart today over the mountains of northern
Mexico, a new system around the southeast Bahamas and Hispaniola has the
potential to develop into a tropical depression during the next 24 hours.

The computer models move this across the Florida peninsula, and into the
northeast Gulf of Mexico during the next four days. If this is the case, it
might be a player in our weather by early next week.

HODGEPODGE: Denver soared to 105 yesterday, which tied the all-time record
high for the Colorado city. What the media won't talk about is the massive
buildup of cold air over much of Canada and parts of Alaska right now; Rae
Point in the Northwest Territories of Canada should not reach 40 for the
next seven days!

SLOW-MOVING THUNDERSTORMS: A big blanket of humid air is still
draped across Alabama. The atmosphere is very sluggish, so thunderstorms
that develop in the afternoon heat will be slow movers allowing some
communities to get very heavy amounts of rain while other places stay dry.
The upper air profile over the Birmingham area suggest that storms that do
form will be moving very slowly toward the north at only 2 or 3 mph.

Scattered, mostly afternoon, thunderstorms will be the order of the
day through Friday. We will still be subject to some storms over the
weekend, but fewer in number. This is especially true on Sunday when the
storms should be widely separated. This will also allow the thermometer to
creep up a few degrees, so highs over the weekend should be in the 93-95
range.

Yesterday's storms caused some problems. There was a flash flood
death in the Tarrant area. A cluster of storms formed just north and NE of
downtown Birmingham and moved NE all the way to Gadsden. More than an inch
of rain fell in Center Point and 1.88 inches in Clay. The two-day total
three miles east of Pinson was 3.80 inches including 2.30 yesterday. The
heaviest rain of all was 2.64 inches at Steele in North St. Clair County.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Emily is now well inland over NE Mexico and
should be downgraded to a tropical storm fairly soon. She was dumping very
heavy amounts of rain which may cause life-threatening flash floods.
Isolated amounts could reach 15 inches, mostly over NE Mexico. The dry Rio
Grande valley of South Texas got a good soaking. They needed rain badly, but
most of the stronger winds were down over Northern Mexico.

No sooner is Emily getting out of the way, than we have something
else to watch. A tropical wave is producing widespread thunderstorms over
the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Puerto Rico. The winds upstairs are
gradually getting more favorable for development. Some of the models,
especially designed for hurricanes, bring the system across Florida into the
NE Gulf of Mexico.

COOKING IN THE SOUTHWEST: 117 in Las Vegas, Bullhead City, Arizona,
and Needles, California yesterday. The low this morning in Las Vegas was 95.
The hottest was 129 in Death Valley, which was within 5 degrees of the
hottest ever in the USA at that same station.

A STATE OF CONTRAST: You can sure find some interesting contrast in
temperature across California. Yesterday up on the cool, breezy NW coast the
high was only 60 in Eureka, while Death Valley had 129.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: On our morning walk, Little Miss Molly
and I went up the walking track. When we came back, she got more and more
apprehensive. The grass cutters had cranked up the mowers and Molly stopped
stone still not wanting to come home. The noise gets to her like thunder and
vacuum cleaners. So we waited until the mowers went around front and we
dashed in the back door. She was glad to get to safety and have a nice
treat. Miss Molly's food sure does smell good. If it tastes as good as it
smells, I wouldn't mind having some myself. I wonder what Miss Molly would
think if I would get down on my all fours side-by-side with her and start
eating her food. She already thinks I'm crazy but life goes on.

===================================================================

...Summer Mix of Sun and Storms...

Our forecast package for the next five to seven days will reflect pretty
routine mid-summer weather conditions for Alabama; hot, humid, sunny at
times, and the risk of an afternoon downpour on a daily basis. Temperatures
will rise easily into the low 90s. Some spots could the mid 90s, but the
combination of moist soil and afternoon thunderstorms should keep the
mercury from rising too far into the 90s.

Of course, with the high humidity levels our heat index values will be very
high; most places will see heat index readings between 95 and 100 degrees
each afternoon. That is what the heat feels to the human body thanks to the
moist air that parks over Alabama in the summer.

EMILY: The hurricane exploded in intensity yesterday, and is making landfall
early this morning along the Mexican coast, about 75 to 100 miles south of
Brownsville, TX. Elsewhere in the tropics we are watching a tropical wave
over the eastern Caribbean, but upper air winds don't favor any development
over the next day or so.

SOUTHWEST HEAT: Death Valley, CA soared to 129 degrees yesterday, within
five degrees of the hottest temperature on record there, and in the United
States. The high in Las Vegas was 117, and Phoenix reached 111. Some
moisture from hurricane Emily should reach parts of the southwest U.S. late
this week meaning clouds, rain, and cooler temperatures.

A JULY CHILL: Yesterday's low at Deadhorse, Alaska was 30 degrees. At
Barrow, Alaska, the high yesterday was a cold 37 degrees.

SUMMER SOAKERS: Rain totals yesterday included 2.55" at Steele and 1.07" at
Center Point. In Huffman, the total for the month of July is now a whopping
12.03"!

IN THE MIDDLE OF SUMMER: We wished a number of times last Autumn and Winter
that we could bottle up some of the sparkling, clear, cool air and release
it on a day like today. That's foolish thinking, of course, but it sure
would be nice.

We are in what is normally the hottest part of the summer and I believe the
old thermometer hanging on the chinaberry tree knows it. Afternoons will
gradually get hotter. Scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms will
help rein in the temperature a bit, but by the end of the week we could see
some of our hottest temperatures so far this year. This is especially true
on Saturday and Sunday when showers and thunderstorms become rather scarce.
We are calling for a high of 96 by Saturday.

A few thunderstorms were already in progress early this afternoon. Those
will lollygag around through the evening. Yesterday some slow-movers over NE
Jefferson County dumped well over an inch of rain in Center Point and
Huffman. The Center Point Fire Department had to do a water rescue at Turkey
Creek Park near Pinson.

HURRICANE EMILY: She continues to approach the extreme NE coast of Mexico
or possibly the lower coast of Texas and she is growing stronger. She was
around 300 miles SE of Brownsville, Texas this afternoon and moving WNW at
14. The National Hurricane Center still thinks she will jog a bit more
toward the west and go into Mexico instead of extreme South Texas. However,
a Hurricane Warning is in effect northward to Port Mansfield, Texas. Her
sustained winds were up to 95 mph. It is still possible that she could
become a major Category 3 hurricane before landfall early Wednesday morning.
Buoy 42002 in the West Gulf, was reporting east winds to 63 mph and 26-foot
waves at midday.

THE BOILING DESERT: Some places have reported record highs the last few
days. Even atop Mt. Wilson outside Los Angeles there was a record 100...the
hottest yesterday was 128 in Death Valley...the high and low in Phoenix in
the last 24 hours was 116/91. Last night a thunderstorm produced a
microburst in the Phoenix area putting 35,000 people without power. At
Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, wind gusts reached 77 mph...other highs
yesterday included 123 at Bullhead City, Arizona and 124 in Needles,
California...the 119 at Indio, California was the hottest ever recorded. But
let's give at least one cool temperature-the national low this morning was
36 at Stanley, Idaho in the heart of the Sawtooth Mountains.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: When a little 9-pound super energetic puppy
with an oversized curiosity, like little Miss Molly, is around, you have to
be more careful. We learned long ago to keep facial tissue, ballpoint pens,
shoes and socks out of reach, not to mention toilet paper. She has been
known in the past to destroy a full roll of toilet paper and create a
blizzard in the bathroom. Despite my being careful, I found a gem clip under
my desk that was badly twisted. It was obvious little Miss Molly did it. I
am so thankful that she didn't swallow it. I can't imagine that little girl
having to have stomach surgery to remove a foreign object. So, from now on,
I won't get a gem clip out of my desk until time to use it. I still have to
keep my upscale National Geographic blanket out of reach, but she hasn't
tried to steal my upscale pillow lately! Life goes on.

...Summer Heat Is Here...

Welcome to summer in Alabama. Afternoon temperatures will rise into the low
90s, and the heat index, the way it really feels due to the high humidity
values, will climb into the 97 to 100 degree range each afternoon for the
rest of the week. There will be a handful of showers and storms from about
1:00 until 8:00 p.m. on a daily basis, but they will be scattered and not
everyone will get wet. All in all, a very routine summer pattern for Alabama
for the next three to five days as the primary upper air storm track remains
near the U.S./Canadian border.

EMILY: The hurricane should move into the northern Mexican coast tonight,
about 50 to 100 miles south of Brownsville, Texas. While the system weakened
greatly yesterday morning over the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico, it should
grow steadily stronger today, and could be a major hurricane again at
landfall tonight. A hurricane watch remains in effect as far north as Baffin
Bay, along the lower Texas coast.

Elsewhere, the Atlantic basin is rather quiet for now and other tropical
storm formation is not expected over the next few days.

LIGHTNING PROBLEMS: Twenty one soldiers were injured due to a lightning
strike Sunday night at a National Guard camp in Pennsylvania. A metal canopy
took a direct hit; thankfully the injuries were not serious. The same batch
of storms produced another lightning strike Sunday night that injured 30
people at a family reunion near Pittsburgh. An 11 year old boy remains in
critical condition. We all have to careful with lightning in summer storms.

SUPER HOT: The mercury soared to 128 degrees yesterday at Death Valley, CA,
within 6 degrees of the hottest ever recorded in the U.S.

AVOIDING HURRICANE EMILY: And, mind you, she is a good one to avoid. We
don't think she will affect the Mississippi-Alabama-NW Florida coast at all,
except possibly increasing the swells through at least tomorrow. Instead she
is headed for the upper Mexican coast and possibly the lower Texas coast.
More on that in the full Emily story below.

Meanwhile, back home in Alabama, the weather is settling down into more
typical fashion for mid-summer. We still can't rule out daily showers and
thunderstorms for the rest of the week. They will be scattered on most days
and extend into the evening hours. We do think by this weekend that those
pesky showers and storms will be fewer in number. Meanwhile, the old
thermometer is going to creep upward a bit eventually reaching the mid-90s
by late in the week and the weekend.

All of the showers and thunderstorms so far in July have kept us in good
shape in the rainfall department. Even though the humidity has been quite
high, the temperatures have been held down a bit. Let's focus on Anniston
Airport for the first 17 days of July. Measurable rain fell on 16 of those
17 days for a total of over 6 inches. The average high temperature all month
has been only 88. On 9 days it didn't even reach 90 and on 2 days the high
was only 79. That is quite unusual for July, which is normally our hottest
month.

REAL HEAT: Don't tell me it's the humidity, not the heat. I have been in
the desert a number of times and I can tell you that 100-degree plus
temperatures are very noticeable. The Desert SW is having some extremely hot
weather now-even by their standards. The national high yesterday was 128 in
Death Valley and Cameron, California. That's only 6 degrees shy of the
hottest ever recorded in the USA and within 8 degrees of the highest ever
recorded in the whole world which was 136 in the Libyan Desert. Tucson had
111 Sunday-their 34th day in a row with 100 or hotter. It was 116 in Phoenix
and Las Vegas.

HURRICANE EMILY: She moved across the northern part of Yucatan and emerged
over the southern Gulf of Mexico this morning. A Hurricane Watch is posted
as far north on the Texas coast as Baffin Bay, which is about 35 miles south
of Corpus Christi. The National Hurricane Center still favors landfall some
30 or 40 miles south of the mouth of the Rio Grande. The water temperature
at the Bay of Campeche Buoy was a very warm 86 this afternoon, so Emily will
grow stronger before making landfall late Tuesday night as a major
hurricane.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure did play a lot with little Miss Molly
over the weekend to make up for several days in a row with no play because
of extra weather duties. She stayed on the ready the whole time and kept a
pile of toys where she could grab one and meet me when I walked out of my
weather office to go get coffee. She still looks so funny with her short
haircut. She almost looks like a "weenie" dog. Her face is so tiny she could
win over anybody just looking at them. Molly is very excited about a new
miniature Dachshund that just moved in a couple of houses away. There is
also a young Shih-tzu next door to the Dachshund, still another Shih-tzu up
the walking track and two other Shih-tzus that visit occasionally. With all
the humans around that also love Molly, she can't possibly feel neglected.
Life goes on.

...Heating Up...

GOOD MORNING: I love the sound of cicadas. They are the sound of summer to
me. It was nice doing some yard work yesterday afternoon as building high
pressure suppressed all of the thunderstorm activity and left us with a
nice, sunny, hot summer day. All the while, I was serenaded by the
beautiful sound of cicadas. All too soon, those sounds will be gone. Oh,
well...

THE WEEK AHEAD: Showers and storms were only isolated across Alabama on
Sunday afternoon. High pressure will continue to hold sway over Alabama's
weather for this week. This will give us typical summertime weather with
hot temperatures, partly cloudy skies and the typical scattered afternoon
thunderstorms. Dew points will be high, so temperatures in the 90s will
produce heat indices 100 degrees during the afternoon hours. So remember to
take it easy if you have outdoor activities planned during the hot part of
the day this week.

EMILY: Hurricane Emily is traversing the Yucatan Peninsula, having made
landfall early this morning. The hurricane will weaken somewhat overland,
but it should re-emerge shortly over the warm waters of the southwestern
Gulf of Mexico. Emily should re-intensify into a category three hurricane
again by Tuesday afternoon with top winds of 120 mph. It should cross the
coast of northeastern Mexico Tuesday night.

The only complicating factor in the forecast is a trough passing across the
continental U.S. This trough may pull Emily a little further north than
forecast, perhaps threatening the extreme Southeast Texas coast. This does
not appear to be a likely scenario, however, and Emily will die a pretty
quick death over the mountains of northeastern Mexico this week.

INTERESTING RECORD: The morning low at McCarran International Airport in
Las Vegas, Nevada was a broiling 93F. This is the warmest morning low ever
observed at Vegas. Just the day before, they had observed their hottest
daily average temperature with a high of 115F and a morning low of 92F.

GOOD AFTERNOON: Hurricane Emily is nowhere near the coast of Alabama and
Northwest Florida this morning, but the National Weather Service in Mobile
has issued a Coastal Flood Watch for the coastlines of Alabama and Northwest
Florida. The Watch has been issued for the large swells that will be
generated by the dangerous hurricane as it moves toward the Yucatan
Peninsula, crosses it, and re-emerges over the southwestern Gulf.

EMILY: It's hard to come up with a menacing moniker for Emily. We have had
Dennis the Menace and Ivan the Terrible. We harken back to storms like
Frederic and Hugo. But it's hard to imagine anything bad coming from a
storm called Emily. But don't let her benign name fool you. Emily is a
menacing hurricane.

Emily probably briefly attained category five hurricane status shortly
before midnight last night. But as the Hurricane Hunter aircraft made a
second pass shortly thereafter, the storm was going through a fluctuation in
intensity and weakened. It still is a formidable strong category four
hurricane as it steams westward toward the Yucatan. It should reach land
during the predawn hours tonight. It will take about twelve hours for the
storm to cross the Yucatan, during which time it will weaken substantially.
But it will regain strength as it moves over the southwestern Gulf. Final
landfall should come early Wednesday morning on the coast of northeastern,
perhaps southern Texas if the hurricane responds to a shortwave trough that
will be passing to the north of Emily. It should have winds of 115 mph when
it arrives on the coast.

OUR WEATHER: High pressure is building into Alabama from the east, and it
will bring more summerlike conditions to the area over the next few days.
Moisture levels will remain high, so there will still be afternoon and
evening showers and storms each day, but they will be more scattered than
what we have experienced recently. This will give you a chance to catch up
on your grass cutting. But it will be seasonably hot.

NATIONAL NOTES: 2.79 inches of rain fell in Baltimore yesterday, which was
a record for the date. It was 127F at Death Valley, CA. This is just 1
degree short of the all time record high there. The daytime high and the
record morning low of 89F at Las Vegas made for an average temperature of
102F. This ties the record for the hottest average temperature ever
recorded there.

ON THIS DATE IN 1944: Just the year before, Col. James Duckworth had become
the first person to fly an airplane into the eye of a hurricane. The
hurricane that he flew into caused tremendous damage to oil production
facilities around the Houston area. This loss of production prompted the
military to order regular aircraft reconnaissance flights into hurricanes in
the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. Famed hurricane forecaster
Grady Norton was put in charge or ordering the flights. Several flights
were made into tropical storms early in 1944. On this date, Col. Allan
Wiggins made the first authorized flight into the eye of a hurricane between
the U.S. East Coast and Bermuda.

...High Pressure To Build In...

GOOD MORNING! It has such a nice name, but Hurricane Emily is a monster.
The strong category four hurricane is churning west northwest through the
western Caribbean Sea this morning, heading toward the Yucatan Peninsula.
Last night, Air Force reconnaissance found a central pressure of 929
millibars in the hurricane's eye. This makes it slightly stronger than
Hurricane Dennis one week ago. That central pressure is also the 19th
lowest recorded in a North Atlantic hurricane. Emily's 155 mph winds ranked
it at a tie for 25th since 1851 with such other infamous storms as Hugo,
Betsy and Floyd. You get the idea what kind of storm this is.

EVENTUAL PATH OF EMILY: Emily has shown no sign of wavering from its
unusually straight course, and we see no reason for it to act any
differently now. Emily will strike the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula
as a cat 4 or 5 storm tonight, around midnight. It will then cross the
Yucatan, weakening as it goes, and emerge over the warm waters of the
southwestern Gulf. Its final landfall should come Tuesday night on the
northeastern coast of Mexico or southern Texas. It will have time to
recharge to major hurricane strength by then.

OUR WEATHER: Hurricane Emily will play no part in our future weather. The
building subtropical ridge of high pressure that is steering Emily westward
will have an increasing influence on our weather, however. After some
morning low clouds and fog, the sun will burn through. There will still be
a fairly good chance of rain across the area again today, but a little less
than on the past few days. The chance of rain today will be about 60
percent. By tomorrow, those rain chances will return to around normal for
this time of year. Of course, normal is about a forty percent chance of rain
in any 24 hour period, so it wont be dry. But it will be hotter, with highs
in the 90s each day this week. Overnight lows will be in the muggy lower to
middle 70s. There may be a better chance of rain Thursday as a weak cold
front drifts close to the state.
