==================================================================

It was a foggy, cloudy and gray start across much of the area this morning.
The fog formed in areas that had some clear skies overnight, and once it
burned off, a little sunshine broke through. But heavy clouds associated
with a disturbance to the west of Alabama were soon began spreading back
over the state.

STORM SYSTEM #1: That disturbance was spreading showers and a few rumbles
of thunder over central and southern sections of the state early this
afternoon. The activity had spread as far north as a line from Tuscaloosa
to near Birmingham by early afternoon, and will continue along and to the
south of the I-20 corridor for the rest of the day. Alabama continues under
the influence of a moist southwesterly flow aloft that will be with us for
the next few days. Disturbances in this flow will set off additional
showers and storms over the state tonight and on Sunday. Monday looks to be
mainly on the dry side as the next storm system gets its act together over
Texas.

STORM SYSTEM #2: A warm front will move north across the state on Tuesday,
bringing some showers and thunder along with it. Then, as a fairly strong
low pressure system passes to the northwest of Alabama, it will drag a
squall line through the state Tuesday night. It appears that wind damage
may be a threat with the line of storms. You will want to monitor future
forecasts.

OUR THANKSGIVING WEATHER: Wednesday should be a raw day with light rain,
cool temperatures and blustery northwest winds gusting to 30 mph. Skies
should clear by Thanksgiving morning, with dry weather and seasonably cool
readings on Turkey Day. There are hints that we could see freezing readings
by Friday morning. But our winds will quickly shift back around to the
south, and another approaching cold front will spark showers again by
Saturday across the state.

HOLIDAY TRAVEL OUTLOOK: By Tuesday, that strong storm system will be
spreading inclement weather across a wide area from the Upper Midwest to
Texas and into the Deep South. It will mainly be rain and thunderstorms,
except over the western periphery of the system from the Texas Panhandle
across the Central Plains in places like Kansas and Nebraska, where a
significant winter storm will happen. By Wednesday, that storm system will
be bringing rain to the East Coast, from New York to Central Georgia. Heavy
snow will be confined to the Upper Great Lakes, with nice weather prevailing
across much of the rest of the country. Flight delays will be common from
the Northeast to Charlotte and perhaps Atlanta. Chicago may experience some
problems also. Thanksgiving Day should feature nice weather across a wide
area with light snow from Virginia across Ohio, Pennsylvania and upstate New
York. Friday looks to be nice across much of the country, except for a
front spreading showers across parts of the Midwest. By Saturday, that
front will affect an area from the Northeast to Alabama. Snow will be
limited to the Rockies for the most part. By Sunday, a big storm system will
be winding up in the Rockies, spreading wintry weather over a large portion
of the West. Showers will be common over the Mississippi Valley.

...Roll Tide! War Eagle!...

GOOD MORNING! Hey! I missed you last week! Many thanks to J.B. for
filling in last weekend as I had an extended business trip to New York City.
It was a fantastic trip. I enjoyed fantastic weather during my visit,
although it was a tad on the chilly side...

IRON BOWL FORECAST: Well, the weather won't be fantastic for this
afternoon's Iron Bowl game in Tuscaloosa, but we have been hoping that the
extensive rain will hold off until after the game. Showers will be on the
increased during the afternoon hours, but the main rain area should arrive
overnight. Even though the heaviest rain should be after the game, you'd
better carry your rain gear with you just in case. Temperatures should be
rather mild, with readings during the game in the 60s.

REST OF WEEKEND: Rain should be rather widespread across the area overnight
tonight and into Sunday. The front responsible for the precipitation will
push south of Birmingham tomorrow, allowing the rain to taper off later in
the day. There will be a few showers Monday as the front comes north as a
warm front. A stronger cold front will approach Alabama on Tuesday,
setting the stage for a round of showers and thunderstorms. It appears that
some of the storms could be on the strong to severe side Tuesday afternoon
and night, so you will want to pay attention to that.

THANKSGIVING WEATHER: Rain should end on Wednesday with breezy conditions
and cooler air moving in behind the front. Skies should clear by
Thanksgiving, with seasonably cool readings. Highs on Turkey Day will be
around 60 after a morning low around 40. We will see some thirties by
Friday morning. We will start looking at holiday travel weather in our
afternoon edition.

ON THIS DATE IN 1900: A late season outbreak of tornadoes killed 77 people
in Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee. A group of students and a teacher
trying to escape an approaching tornado in Arkansas were injured when the
twister overtook them. It had missed the school building entirely.

CHANGEABLE WEATHER AHEAD: We're going to go through a series of weather
changes over the next few days. Before it's all over, we should get some
substantial rainfall and then a change to noticeably cooler by Thanksgiving.

First things first. The rain that moved slowly across the area today is
mostly gone. There could be a little bit of scattered light rain or drizzle
tonight as a solid overcast hangs tough. Most of the high school playoff
games tonight should have little or no risk of rain-maybe a few spots of
light drizzle.

Saturday is somewhat of a question mark. We believe that much of the day
will be dry. However, some showers and thunderstorms will reach the SW part
of the state during the afternoon and overspread the area Saturday night.
Still a good chance of showers and storms on Sunday, then thinning out
considerably on Monday. By then a strong low pressure system will be moving
NE through Kansas and Alabama can expect increasing showers and
thunderstorms on Tuesday as a warm front moves through the state. We could
have a slight risk of some severe thunderstorms on Tuesday. A few spots will
get locally heavy rain. The latest indications are that the storms will last
into Wednesday morning.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Not too comfortable for the UAB-Army game in West Point,
New York at midday Saturday. There is a good chance of rain. It will be a
cold rain with temperatures around 46 at kickoff. Later in the afternoon, at
2:30 p.m., the Auburn-Alabama game gets underway at Tuscaloosa. It's going
to be a close call, but we think most of the game will be played with dry
conditions. Can't rule out some rain reaching the stadium before the final
whistle. It should be near 70 at kickoff.

THANKSGIVING WEATHER: It's a bit early to be too specific, but we believe
Thanksgiving will be cool and dry with highs in the 50s.

FINAL FRIDAY NOTES: 84 in McAllen, Texas and Thermal, California was
yesterday's hottest...coldest in the lower 48 was 10 this morning in
Stanley, Idaho...on this date in 1988, 21 tornadoes occurred including 13 in
Mississippi. Two persons were killed and 11 injured at Nettleton,
Mississippi...a tornado in West Alabama also injured 8 persons at
Tuscaloosa.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our favorite walking weather early today-cool
with a steady light rain. Strangely enough there is one teenage tree along
the walking track that Molly insists on stopping at and sniffing all around
the tree. Undoubtedly she is checking to see if some of her friends had
stopped by. Most likely they heist their leg and use the tree for a
fireplug. I guess it's sort of a doggie bulletin board...sure am glad we
decided to not give Molly a bath today. Instead, we will wait until her
regular appointment at the vet Monday when she will get a bath and also
grooming. Cheers. Life goes on.

...Some Rain At Times...

A complex forecast is ahead for Alabama through the first half of next week.
We will mention the chance of light rain this morning, but it looks like
many places will be dry this afternoon and tonight as the first disturbance
weakens and passes well to the north of the state. For tonight's high school
football games, just an outside risk of a shower with temperatures in the
60s.

Tomorrow, a shower is possible during the day, but it looks like the most
widespread rain will come tomorrow night into Sunday. A few thunderstorms
could be involved as well as the air becomes more unstable and a surface
front slips into north Alabama.

Early next week, a few widely scattered showers are possible on Monday, but
it looks like the big round of rain and storms will come Tuesday afternoon
and Tuesday night as a major storm moves out of the southern plains. Some of
the model data suggests a severe weather threat is possible for Alabama, so
we will keep a close eye on the situation.

Then, the rain should end early Wednesday, with dry and cool weather for
Thanksgiving Day. At this time we expect highs in the 50s, and early morning
readings in the 30s next Thursday.

IRON BOWL: The sky will be mostly cloudy in Tuscaloosa for tomorrow's
Auburn-Alabama game, which kicks off at 2:30. A shower is possible during
the game, but we believe the most widespread rain will hold off until
tomorrow night, after the game is over. Temperatures will drop from near 70
at kickoff into the mid 60s by the fourth quarter.

TEXAS TWISTERS: Three tornadoes touched down in the Houston area on
Wednesday; two were rated F0, and one was an F1.

==================================================================

I was out in my yard with a cup of coffee at 5:45 this morning because of a
super sunrise. Hope you saw it. Easily one of the top 10 I have ever seen
and I have seen a few. But I'm supposed to be discussing weather, so let me
reboot my brain and get back on track:

OUR UPCOMING RAIN EVENT: This has been a long painful process with a big
storm system inching its way from Texas. We get all kinds of mixed signals
on when and how much rain for Alabama. This afternoon some light showers
were moving into the western counties of the state and those will advance
eastward tonight. All the latest evidence that we can analyze points to a
chance of showers tonight and again Friday and increasing chances of showers
over the weekend. Probably our best chance during the weekend will be Sunday
and Sunday night. Our day-by-day forecast details all of that.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: A fairly important football game is being played in
Tuscaloosa Saturday afternoon. At 2:30, Auburn plays Alabama. We now believe
that there will not be as much rain as we earlier expected on Saturday. Even
so, it's going to be difficult to get through the game without needing
raingear and there may also be a thunderstorm. It should be about 70 at
kickoff and about 65 when we know the final score. For Friday night high
school playoff games, there's also a chance of showers with game time
temperatures 65-70.

FURTHER DOWN THE ROAD: We think that by Sunday morning the low pressure
area will be still to our west with a cold front near the NW corner of
Alabama. That should enhance our chance of rain on Sunday. The front may
push past Birmingham Monday and cool us off just a bit, but it should stall
near Montgomery and come back northward as a warm front. Things are pointing
toward more numerous showers and storms on Wednesday-some possibly strong,
only to have fresh and sharply cooler air move over the area Thanksgiving
Day. We would guess at this time that Thanksgiving will be dry.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly slept until almost 10 this
morning. That gave me time to soak up some coffee and get an early start on
a complicated forecast. On our long morning walk, she was in a sniffing mood
again, especially in the broad open common area near the Old Crow Motel.
That broad grassy area may be the doggy version of the New York Times. Miss
Molly has a problem with very dry, flaky skin. We just bought some dog food
that should help that, plus some moisturizing shampoo. Later today we will
give her a bath and that's going to be traumatic. Last time we gave her a
bath she came roaring upward like a minuteman missile being launched from a
silo with her ears laid back and slinging water everywhere. She landed on
the tile floor and took off like a jackrabbit and hid. We both had to change
clothes we were so soaked. Life goes on-wet or dry.

...Weather Changes Ahead...

We will squeeze in one more dry and mild day before wet weather returns to Alabama. Temperatures today should rise into the low 70s, about ten degrees above normal for mid-November, with a decent amount of sunshine through scattered clouds. Clouds will thicken tonight, and we will bring in the chance of showers tomorrow as a weather disturbance approaches from the west.

THE WEEKEND: Unfortunately we will have to maintain the chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm on Saturday and Sunday as a pool of deeper moisture sits on top of us. There will be some good breaks in the rain, but a shower is possible at almost any time on both days. Temperatures will remain mild.

For the Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa on Saturday, showers are possible during the game with temperatures falling from near 70 at kickoff into the mid 60s by the end of the game.

NEXT WEEK: A major storm system is forecast to move in here by Tuesday with a chance of strong thunderstorms. Then, colder and drier air will flow in here just in time for Thanksgiving Day on Thursday.

WET TEXAS: Serious flooding was reported over much of central and east Texas yesterday. In Waco, 2.75” of rain was measured, bringing the total for 2004 to 54.57”. That makes 2004 the second wettest year on record in Waco.

LONG GROWING SEASON: The last freeze in Birmingham came on March 22 when the mercury dropped to 30 degrees, so our growing season is now at 239 days, and counting since we do not expect any freezing temperatures through early next week. The average date of the first freeze in Birmingham is November 8, so we will be at least two weeks late this year.

A WET WEEKEND?: We sure have enjoyed a nice stretch of pleasant autumn weather but that will change soon. We will have another pleasant day Thursday and a good part of Friday may be dry. However some showers should reach the area later in the day and Friday night.
There are increasing indications that much of the weekend will be wet. The storm total rainfall for Saturday and Sunday across Central Alabama should be between one and two inches with some areas getting more than that.

A cold front is expected to approach the NW corner of Alabama Saturday morning and then slow down or stall for about 24 hours before moving down to about the Birmingham area Monday morning. We will still have a good chance of some showers on Monday.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: That is certainly not the best of news for football fans. It is still a bit early to pin it down to specifics. We can do that better Thursday and Friday. At this time, it appears the Friday night high school playoff games may have some scattered showers, but temperatures will be in the 60s. For the Alabama-Auburn game Saturday afternoon, temperatures should be around 70 at kickoff with occasional showers in the area and possibly a thunderstorm. UAB will be way far away playing Army. There is a chance of some light rain at West Point during the game with temperatures only near 50.

THE BIG TEXAS RAINS: It has been pouring in parts of Texas for nearly a week and showers and storms continue today. This may sound like a paradox, but there has been so much flash flooding around the town of Leaky, Texas that only one road in the entire county was open early this morning. In the wee morning hours, 73 roads were closed in and around San Antonio and 43 closed in the San Marcos area. In Uvalde County, the only road open in the entire county was US-90...warmest temperature yesterday was in Brownsville, Texas...coldest this morning in the lower 48 was 8 degrees at Houlton, Maine. It has not been as cold in Alaska for the last several days. In fact, up in the extreme north part of Canada it was 5 above this morning at Alert—a station that had been reporting 30 below temperatures for nearly a week.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I was gone all day yesterday and when I got home I decided to come in the front door instead of the garage door. There are full length glass panes by the front door and little Miss Molly often parks there to look outside. When she saw me coming, I thought she was going to scratch a hole in the glass trying to get to me and she was jumping up and down like she was on a trampoline. Had to leave again this morning to help work some at our church and when I got home it was the same thing over again. The love of a little puppy is unending...on our late night walk and again early this morning, Molly was in a sniffing mood. Someone has said that dogs need to sniff the ground. It is how they keep abreast of current events. In a sense the ground is like a doggy newspaper containing all kinds of late-breaking dog news...sure enjoyed a long trip with James Spann yesterday into West Alabama. I got to show him my boyhood home in good old Havana Junction. Life goes on.

...Milder Afternoons Ahead...

Dry weather continues to headline our forecast for the next 48 hours with
milder afternoons. A few mid and high level clouds will drift by from time
to time today and tomorrow, but a pretty decent amount of sunshine should
get through making for more pleasant fall weather.

To the west, a storm system over northern Mexico is finally on the move.
This has been producing very heavy rain across much of Texas during the past
two days, and as it approaches late this week clouds will begin to increase
on Friday, and we will introduce the risk of showers beginning on Friday
afternoon. We will maintain the chance of a few passing showers into the
weekend, but the storm system will weaken and pass well to the north of
Alabama, so rain totals should not be all that heavy.

IRON BOWL: For Saturday's game in Tuscaloosa where Alabama will host Auburn
(2:30 p.m. kickoff), the sky should be mostly cloudy and a passing shower is
possible during the game. Temperatures will fall from near 70 at kickoff
into the low to mid 60s by the fourth quarter.

THANKSGIVING WEEK: The longer range guidance is now suggest a fairly strong
cold front will pass through the state Tuesday night, which should bring a
significant rain event in here on Tuesday, followed by much colder air just
in time for Wednesday and Thanksgiving day. Some parts of Alabama could see
early morning temperatures below freezing on Thanksgiving morning. The
biggest shopping day of the year on Friday (November 26) at this point looks
dry and cool with ample sunshine. But, we caution you there is not much
skill in a specific weather forecast beyond seven days, so all of this is
subject to change. Stay tuned!

NICE AUTUMN WEATHER CONTINUES: Thanks to a big high pressure area that was
centered early today over North Georgia, Alabama will have at least two or
three more days of very pleasant mid-November weather. Because of that high
pressure area and light winds overnight, it dropped to near freezing in NE
Alabama. There was some scattered light frost even as far south as
Trussville where I estimated the low at my house this morning to be about

34. Here are some of the official lows:
32 in Ft. Payne and DeSoto State Park
33 in Anniston
36 in Meridianville and Pinson
38 in Decatur
41 at Birmingham Airport
43 in Tuscaloosa

OUR NEXT RAIN: As that high pressure area breaks down and moves on east, a
southerly wind flow will set in across Alabama. Eventually this will bring
us an increase in moisture. At this time we think some showers will show up
by Friday night. We look for mostly cloudy conditions on Saturday with a
chance of showers and possibly even a thunderstorm. We are cognizant of a
special event taking place in Tuscaloosa at 2:30 Saturday afternoon. We will
be more specific on our football forecast later, but at this time we think
there will be a risk of some showers and with a temperature at kick off
about 72 degrees.

TUESDAY WRAP UP: While Alabama has been blessed with good weather for a
long time, other parts of the country are not so lucky. It has been a
miserable week in places like New Mexico, Central and West Texas. Some very
heavy rainfall totals for the week in Texas and there have been a lot flash
flood incidents. Overnight there were more flash flood warnings issued for
parts of West Texas around Midland and Odessa, for example...it was a cold
morning over the NE states with temperatures in the teens in part of
Maine...in the Texas Panhandle where there has been two occasions of very
early accumulating snow the past week, it is pouring rain throughout that
area today...the warmest temperature in the nation yesterday afternoon was
85 at Brownsville, down on the southern tip of Texas and also at Santa Ana,
California.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I did a great job of making up with Miss Molly
late yesterday and last night. A lot of lengthy play sessions...she likes to
grab her newest toy, which is a doggie soccer ball with tug ropes attached,
and try to keep it away from me. She expects me to chase her throughout the
house...last night, after about 10 minutes of that, I never could catch her.
The little rascal paces herself to stay about two steps ahead of me. Both
our little tongues were literally hanging out...we also had wrestling
sessions, kick ball, you name it. As soon as I went to bed, she jumped up on
the bed so tired that she simply plopped down and went to sleep. There was
none of that turning in circles like a dog does before lying down. When
Molly got up at 6 this morning, she seemed friendlier. I am sure she
remembered all the playing from last night. Life goes on and it is
great-exhausted or rested!

...Fine Fall Weather Continues...

A benign weather pattern will continue across Alabama through mid-week with
no rain and a slow warming trend. We will be watching storm system over the
southwest U.S. as it begins to move eastward. We expect this disturbance to
weaken as it approaches Alabama this weekend, but it should produce a few
scattered showers Friday night into Saturday. Rain should be light and
spotty, and at the moment we don't expect wet weather to be a major factor
in Saturday's Alabama-Auburn game in Tuscaloosa. For now we expect Sunday to
be a dry day.

THANKSGIVING WEEK: Peering out into the future, a cold front is forecast to
slip in here from the north on Monday, which could bring a few showers.
Then, another system moving out of the southwest U.S. shows the potential to
bring some rain around here by Wednesday or Thanksgiving Day, but once again
the latest model data weakens this system and it does not look like it will
be a major disruption to holiday travel. Of course, this is still over one
week away and this scenario could change between now and then.

There is no sign of any major intrusion of seriously cold air during the
next 10 to 15 days. While a few of the colder places have seen a light
freeze, most Alabama communities have yet to drop below 32 degrees. The
average date of the first freeze in Birmingham is November 8, so the growing
season is running a little longer than normal this year. The latest first
freeze on record here came on December 5, 1921.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Lots of rain over west Texas yesterday, the total
at Midland-Odessa was 1.96". Coldest spot in the "lower 48" yesterday was
Cooke City, MT with 8 degrees. Arctic Village, Alaska dropped to -12.

OUR GOOD LUCK CONTINUES: Another very pleasant day across Alabama if you
don't mind temperatures being on the semi-cool side. Our luck with good
weather will continue most of the week with highs in the mid and upper 60s,
but nights will be cool. We see little or no chance for rain until the
weekend, although some showers could arrive Friday night. Probably our
better chance of rain will be on Saturday when there will be some scattered
showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Late information indicates that we
could be dry again on Sunday, although we're not sure about that yet.

The wind will be very light tonight and with mostly clear skies and low dew
points in the area, we expect the temperature to fall to the upper 30s
across Central Alabama especially from Birmingham eastward. The colder
valleys of east and NE Alabama could be several degrees lower.
That was the situation last night and by early this morning the temperature
had dropped to 30 at Scottsboro, Meridianville and at Russell Cave National
Monument, 31 in Owens Crossroads and 32 in DeSoto State Park. There was some
very light frost at Madison, near Huntsville, the first of the season.
Huntsville has not been below 36 so far this season. Their average date for
the first freeze is November 5 and the all-time latest came on December 5.

MORE ABOUT HUNTSVILLE: A huge contrast in the Rocket City's weather today
as compared to 15 years ago today. A powerful F4 tornado tore across the
southern part of the city during the afternoon rush hour killing 21 or 22
people and injuring 463. There is much more about this in today's Weather
Talk and also in Weather Notebook. An interesting sidelight to that major
event: James Spann and the news crew did live telecasts from the scene the
next day and during the noon newscast, James was standing out in a snow
squall. He said the wind chill must have been near zero. They also did the
5, 6 and 10 o'clock news on site.

MONDAY WRAP UP: Some very cold temperature in North Carolina this morning
with lows of 17 in Jefferson, 22 in Boone and Spruce Pine, 23 in Franklin,
24 on Newfound Gap (in Smoky Mountain National Park), and 25 in
Asheville...the lowest in the lower 48 states was 12 at Lake Yellowstone
inside Yellowstone National Park. It was 5 below in Bettles, Alaska...on
this date in 1900, 45 inches of snow fell on Watertown, New York in only 24
hours-a record storm for New York until 1976. Yep, that's one of those
legendary lake effect snow events that are almost
unbelievable...considerable flash-flooding in Central and South Texas
overnight.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly may be giving up on me since
I have had very little time to play with her for four or five days in a row.
I've got to change that. It is so much fun to play all of her games with
her. On our night walk she wanted to stay out forever because she had not
had much time with me. It sure was nice walking in the chilly air...she was
in one of those scrounging moods when she burrows her nose in those grassy
areas to see what's there. But I used the magic word "treat" and she bolted
for home. That works every time. We did cuddle a lot when we hit the sack
shortly after midnight...life goes on and on and is always interesting.

...A Cool, Pleasant Monday...

A great big high pressure system centered over Ohio and Pennsylvania is what
gave us the brisk NE winds Sunday. We'll have another good easterly breeze
today as drier air continues to circulate into Alabama from the east. That
high is so big that it was causing beach erosion on the Florida east coast
with winds frequently gusting to over 30 mph. Off shore there have been some
11-foot waves.

Our wind will not be as strong today and it will diminish greatly tonight.
This will allow temperatures to drop to near 40. There may be some mid 30s
in the valleys of east and NE Alabama.

OUR NEXT RAIN: We think we can get through at least Thursday with no threat
of rain. A few showers may show up late Friday or Friday night and then look
for some scattered showers on Saturday and possibly a thunderstorm. No large
temperature changes are anticipated and our high temperatures for much of
this week will be in the mid and upper 60s, which is fairly close to normal
for mid November.

ANNIVERSARY OF A TRAGEDY: It was 15 years ago today that a powerful F4
tornado ripped across the southern part of Huntsville during the afternoon
rush hour killing 22 people and injuring nearly 500. See our story about
this tragedy in today's Weather Talk.

MY THOUGHTS: Even though I have been in weather work for many years and
greatly involved in severe weather coverage, one never gets used to seeing
people suffer like they did in Huntsville...I have been around for what
seems like a zillion sunsets, but I never tire of them. I hope you saw last
evening's sunset. It was a jewel thanks to some well places cirrus clouds.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I really do believe that a doggie can talk to
you if you only watch their actions. When I went to bed well past midnight
Saturday night, little Miss Molly was struggling to stay awake. I had not
played with her all day. She was too tired to jump up on the king-sized bed,
but she stood on her hind legs with her front paws against the mattress
wanting to be picked up. After lifting her on the bed, she snuggled as close
to me as possible with the top of her head rubbing my chin. After a minute
or so, she stood up, looked me intently in the eye and I know she was
saying, "Big Guy, I still love you but I wish you could find time to play."
Life goes on.

A BREEZY, SPARKLING DAY: A sprawling high pressure system centered over
the NE grew stronger in the last 24 hours and brisk easterly winds and drier
air got rid of most of those pesky clouds. Colder air coming down the east
side of the Appalachians and spreading west into Alabama will hold
temperatures down a little more than earlier expected for the next several
days. In fact, tonight's low averaging 38 across Central Alabama may permit
a few spots of light frost in the better protected valleys, especially over
the east and NE counties. Some places will probably have lows around 34
early Monday morning. For the rest of the week, we expect our high
temperatures to be in the mid 60s, except upper 60s around Thursday.

One of our weather models indicates an area of light rain over East
Tennessee and extreme NE Alabama late Tuesday. We are not buying that at the
moment until we can get a closer look. We think we should have little or no
risk of rain all the way through Thursday.

Sure was a nice bright day for Sunday with great visibility. If it were not
for the curvature of the earth, we probably could have seen Chattanooga or
Montgomery. Brisk NE winds were gusting to about 25 mph at times. If you had
been on some of the higher ridges around the area, such as Mt. Cheaha, your
hat would have blown off.

A FREEZE WARNING EAST OF ALABAMA: The National Weather Service in Atlanta
and Columbia have advised that temperatures may drop to freezing or lower
over North and Central Georgia and parts of South Carolina tonight. It could
be as cold as the upper 20s in the mountains of NE Georgia. That will be the
coldest since last spring.

SUNDAY NOTES: For the third time this week, Saranac Lake, New York was the
coldest spot in the lower 48 states this morning with 5 above zero.
Saturday's warmest was 84 at Ft. Myers and West Kendall down in South
Florida...how would you like to be atop Mt. Washington, New Hampshire this
afternoon where the temperature was 23 with west winds gusting to 87 mph?
that sends the wind chill to below zero...in the Texas Panhandle, Amarillo
received 4.4 inches of snow Saturday. That is the first time measurable snow
has fallen on November 13 since their weather records began way back in
1892.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly sure did look funny on our
early morning walk. NE winds pushing down the US 11 valley were gusting to
at least 25 mph and her hair was blowing around like crazy. As we headed
back home, it was a tail wind for the little girl and her tail actually blew
back over her back. Autumn leaves were blowing around like snowflakes and,
of course, little Miss Molly had to chase every one. This means that I had
to change directions and speed every few seconds, so I had to stay very
alert. This is the final sentence of today's report and as soon as I
complete it, I'm going to have a lengthy play session with Molly-something
she has missed for the last two days and she seems a bit subdued. Life goes
on.

...Cool and Dry Through Midweek...

Clouds hung tough Saturday. As a result, the high temperature was only 55 in
Ft. Payne and 59 in Cullman. Down in South Alabama it got well into the 60s.

There may be some cloudiness overstaying its welcome around parts of the
state this morning, but overall the clouds will thin out with lots of
sunshine as the day wears on. With clear skies and lighter wind tonight,
temperatures will fall to the upper 30s across Central Alabama. There could
be some lows around 34 in the colder valleys. It's not out of the question
to have some patchy light frost in those areas by morning.

We think the dry weather will last all the way into Thursday, but some rain
could arrive later Thursday. We will be able to fine tune that in the next
couple of days. Daily high temperatures after today will be in the mid and
upper 60s-rather pleasant for mid November.

SUNDAY NOTES: Extremes of temperature across the lower 48 states yesterday
varied from 4 above zero early in the day at Saranac Lake in Upstate New
York to an afternoon high of 84 at Fort Myers and West Kendall in South
Florida. Some of the worst weather was out in the Southwest, especially in
New Mexico and parts of West Texas. One of the heavier snowfall amounts I
could find was 12 inches at Rociada, New Mexico. In West Texas, especially
in parts of the Panhandle, there were a number reports of 4-inch
snowfall...Mobile is already guaranteed a wet year since rainfall is now
well over 70 inches for 2004.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Didn't get to play with little Miss Molly a
single bit Saturday. Far too much other stuff going on and she let me know
it. As the day wore on and I didn't play kick ball, pull rope or wrestle
with her, she started following me around. While I was grabbing a cup of
coffee, she jumped up in my desk chair, then up on to my desk and I found
her curled up asleep between my keyboard and monitor. She knows how to
communicate. Life goes on playtime or not. I will make it up to her.
