...Nice Weather Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! It's kind of a gray start out there across much of
the area on this Sunday morning with lots of low clouds and some fog.
Plenty of low level moisture is still in place, despite the passage of a
fairly decent cool front over night. Much drier air will arrive on the
wings of brisk northerly winds that should pick up as we go through the day.
The drier air should begin to erode the clouds by afternoon, leading to
sunny skies. Combine that with the lower humidities, slightly lower
temperatures and refreshing northerly breezes and get ready for some nice
weather over the next few days.

JUST HOW NICE? Tonight will see lows drop into the lower to middle
60s. A few normally colder locations may actually see the 50s tonight.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday and Tuesday will be some of the best weather
days you will ever see in Alabama in July. Skies will be sunny, rain
chances will be nearly nil. Humidities will be lower. Temperatures will be
in the middle on Monday and near 90 on Tuesday. As we move further into
time, the forecast gets a little fuzzier. With a northwest flow, any
disturbances skimming along could bring along the possibility of a dying
storm complex, but it looks like mostly dry conditions will last through
midweek. Next good chance of rain: Thursday or Friday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1986: A slow moving F2 tornado near Minneapolis
was very photogenic as it strutted live for the cameras of a television news
helicopter. The crew taped some amazing close up footage of the violently
rotating vortex as it ripped trees from the ground and flung them like
matchsticks. The twister was on the ground for 30 minutes. Tornadoes are
not unusual occurrences in Minnesota in July. During the summer, the
tornado belt shifts northward into the Upper Midwest.

IN 1986: Oakfield, WI was hit by a major tornado. The F5 tornado
struck Oakfield at 7:15 p.m., injuring 17 and destroying 47 of the 320 homes
in the town.

GOOD AFTERNOON! Showers and thunderstorms have been occurring this morning
over parts of North Central, Central and South Alabama as surface trough
moved across the state. A cold front lies to the northwest of Alabama,
extending from low pressure in southwestern Kentucky back to Memphis and
then on into southeastern Arkansas and northeastern Texas.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms were developing across Central
Mississippi and then on into Central Alabama. Other storms were forming
along the Mississippi/Tennessee border. Skies had become partly cloudy over
northern Mississippi and northwestern Alabama. The increase in sunshine
could lead to further destabilization of the atmosphere. But overall, the
airmass over Alabama is much more stable than yesterday, and the SPC has
dropped the Slight Risk Outlook for severe weather for Alabama.

FOR THE REST OF TODAY AND TONIGHT: we will maintain a chance of showers and
storms for those storms that are trying to build from Central Alabama back
to the west and for any storms that form ahead of the front. The front
will push to the south of Birmingham overnight tonight, ending the chance of
showers and storms.

SUNDAY AND MONDAY: Those rain chances will be gone for awhile, with dry and
sunny conditions expected Sunday through Tuesday. We will deal with some
clouds early on Sunday, but fair skies should return by lunch. Dew points
are in the 70s across Alabama this afternoon. Behind the front, dew points
will drop into the refreshing middle and even lower 60s. This will allow
for comfortable overnight lows Monday morning and Tuesday morning. Another
weak front will approach Alabama late on Wednesday, bringing a slight chance
of rain then.

REST OF THE WEEK: The unseasonable upper level trough will begin to lift
out to the northeast by midweek. Another disturbance passing well to the
north of Alabama later in the week will bring another chance of showers and
storms in the Friday/Saturday time frame. The slow moving system will
continue to enhance rain chances through the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1944: Just the year before, Col. James Duckworth had become
the first person to fly an airplane into the eye of a hurricane. The
hurricane that he flew into caused tremendous damage at oil production
facilities around the Houston area. This loss of production prompted the
military to order regular aircraft reconnaissance flights into hurricanes in
the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. Famed hurricane forecaster
Grady Norton was put in charge or ordering the flights. Several flights
were made into tropical storms early in 1944. On this date, Col. Allan
Wiggins made the first authorized flight into the eye of a hurricane between
the U.S. and Bermuda.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: Tragedy in Papua, New Guinea near Australia as a
relatively small earthquake caused three tsunami as high as 45 feet to
strike the north coast. Over 2200 people died, many of them never found
because they were swept out to sea or devoured by saltwater crocodiles or
wild dogs. The waves destroyed five villages along an 18 mile stretch of
coastline.

...Comfortable Readings Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! Get ready for something you don't often see in Alabama. Not
only a cool front that makes it deep into the state, but the second one in
less than a week. The front will give us a spell of less humid and sunny
weather starting tomorrow.

BUT FOR TODAY: An approaching upper level disturbance, surface low pressure
to the west of Alabama and an old frontal boundary is combining with the
approaching cool front to produce a good chance of showers and thunderstorms
across much of the area this morning. Those showers and storms should
begin to taper off and will eventually end completely this evening as the
front is finally pushed south behind the disturbance and low pressure and
ahead of a strong northerly flow aloft. Storms could be on the strong side
today, and we could see heavy rainfall amounts.

SUNDAY AND BEYOND: Alabama will be under the influence of an unusually
strong upper level trough for the next few days. This will allow for some
comfortable overnight conditions by Monday morning, when most areas will
make it well down in to the 60s. As we saw earlier this week, some areas
could even see the upper 50s! Humidity readings will be much more
comfortable also with lots of sunshine and no storms.

Temperatures will quickly edge back to near 90 degrees Monday and Tuesday.
We will put back a chance of storms each day as disturbances threaten on the
northwesterly flow.

OZONE FORECAST: Convective activity will keep our air quality in the green
category today, but Sunday will see conditions back in the yellow range.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: Tropical Storm Danny was strengthening in the Gulf Of

Mexico off of the Louisiana Coast. It marked only the third time in 126
years that fourth tropical storms had formed so early in the season (1886,
1959 were the other years.) The storm would eventually stall over Mobile
Bay, dumping incredible amounts of rain on the coast.

A NICE EARLY MORNING: Before we get into a discussion about more serious
weather, let's celebrate these pleasant early morning low temperatures:

58 at DeSoto State Park
62 in Belle Mina and Heflin
63 in Decatur, Cullman, Ft. Payne, Wedowee
64 in Huntsville, Pinson, Scottsboro, Crossville
65 in Anniston, Trussville, Russellville

JULY ACTING VERY UNUSUAL: We're looking for a second front in only a few
days to come into Alabama. That is very unusual for July. We are also in for
some more showers and thunderstorms overnight and much of Saturday. The
storms will increase tonight producing locally heavy rain. There is a slight
risk of a few severe thunderstorms, even into Saturday. But things will be
looking up for late in the weekend and here is another rarity. We're not
including any showers for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The humidity will also
be noticeably lower on Sunday and we don't see any extreme heat any time
soon.

Severe thunderstorm watches covered much of Mississippi this afternoon. Very
strong storms developed over that state this morning and moved over the SE.
Some were spreading into West Alabama. Meanwhile, another big thunderstorm
complex moved SE from Missouri overnight and was moving into North
Mississippi and NW Alabama..

TROPICAL WEATHER: Just a little bit of action in the tropics in the form of
a tropical wave over the central and eastern Caribbean. It was moving west,
but it shows no sign of growing stronger.

AIR QUALITY: We were under another code yellow today, which means moderate
air quality.

AN UNUSUAL WEATHER EVENT: It happened in southern Colorado yesterday. A
tornado touched down in Alamosa County in a deep valley between two mountain
ranges. It was confirmed on the ground 10 miles east of Alamosa and it was
visible from Alamosa. That is the largest town in that broad high altitude
deep valley in southern Colorado-a vast agricultural area. Tornadoes are
fairly common out on the plains of eastern Colorado, however.

FRIDAY WRAP UP: Based on radar estimates, as much as 9 inches of rain has
fallen in the last few days over SW Coffee County in extreme south
Alabama...lowest temperature this morning was 39 in Lakeview, Oregon and
hottest yesterday 116 in Death Valley.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Delightful early morning walks with Miss Molly
because of the cooler temperatures and lower dew points. For several
mornings in a row, we have seen a tiny baby rabbit at the north end of the
walking track near the Old Crow Motel. The little creature was sitting out
in the cool wet grass. Molly did not see him until she was only three feet
away. The little rabbit jumped the Old Crow Creek and paused in the thick
underbrush. Molly frantically tried to catch the rabbit, but she jumped in a
pool of standing water and got soaking wet. When we got home, had to dry her
off with a towel, but she sure did get excited. Life goes on. -J B Elliott

...Storms return late tonight...

Weather maps this morning look more like April than July. The a very high
amplitude flow aloft continues over North America, with a deep trough over
the eastern states.

While today should be rain-free for most of Alabama, a strong disturbance
riding down the back side of the trough will affect Alabama will bring a
healthy round of showers and storms in here tonight into tomorrow morning.
At the moment it looks like the greatest window for rain and storms will
come from about 11:00 p.m. tonight through 12:00 noon tomorrow. Some of the
storms will be strong, possibly severe, and rainfall amounts could be heavy
as well.

As the system moves northeast, a nice surge of dry air will return to the
state tomorrow night, and should mean mostly dry weather for Sunday and
Monday. We are rarely comfortable taking out the chance of afternoon storms
this time of the year, but this pattern is very anomalous for July and we
could actually go two or three days with no afternoon storms early next
week.

AT THE BEACH: The sky along the coast will be cloudy at times tomorrow with
a good chance of a few passing showers or storms. Showers and storms will
thin out on Sunday and Monday with increasing amounts of sunshine. Daytime
temperatures will peak in the mid 80s tomorrow, and in the upper 80s on
Sunday. The water temperature is in the 85 to 88 degree range.

JULY TORNADO: A National Weather Service survey team discovered two small
areas of F0 tornado damage yesterday in Colbert county, in northwest Alabama
(from Wednesday night's storms). Only 44 tornadoes have been observed in
Alabama during the month of July since 1819.

WHERE IS THE FRONT?: It's a good question and occasionally we weather
people have a tough time finding it. The frontal boundary is teasing the
Birmingham area this afternoon. Up in north Alabama, the dew points are in
the low to mid 60s, but from Birmingham southward they are 70 or better.
We think just enough cool air will infiltrate our area tonight, so we're
going to call for a low of 68 by morning, which will feel fairly good
compared to recent moisture-laden early mornings. There will be few, if any,
evening thunderstorms today, but some scattered ones down state. Friday will
also be sparse with thunderstorms. This won't last long. Moisture will start
surging back northward from the Gulf of Mexico and showers and thunderstorms
will be increasing late Friday night and especially on Saturday. Some folks
may see heavy rain on Saturday. An interesting scenario for the weekend.
There are some hints of another frontal boundary moving into the state
during the day Sunday. This may keep the best chance of thunderstorms south
of I-20 on Sunday. We're going out on a limb a bit and calling for mostly
sunny and a little less humid Monday.

YESTERDAY'S STORMS: A lot of biggies and quite a few reports of wind
damage, but we don't know of significant damage. It was mostly to trees and
power lines. At one time, most of Pell City was without power. Despite all
the storms the last few days, Birmingham Airport has been left high and dry
and our rainfall deficit for the year is now approaching 4 inches. As much
as 4 to 5 inches of rain fell in extreme NW Alabama yesterday.

AIR QUALITY: The Birmingham metro area was under a code yellow again today
which means moderate air quality. That has been the pattern lately.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The Atlantic Basin remains amazingly quiet with still no
hint of tropical development for the next few days.

MY LITTLE THOUGHTS: Hope you don't mind me occasionally roaming far and
wide to look at the weather in other parts. I like to think globally when it
comes to weather and to not spend this entire column on just Alabama...it
was 115 yesterday in Death Valley...the cool spots this morning Truckee,
California, Lakeview, Oregon and Barrow, Alaska all with 37. "mostly sunny
tonight." yes, that sounds strange, but it was correct. That was a recent
forecast for a northern Canadian location. Remember, they're in 24 hours of
daylight. One more thing, it was 109 below zero today at Vostok, Antarctica
today. That blows my little pea-picking mind, as Tennessee Ernie Ford loved
to say.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: After getting only three hours sleep Wednesday
night and no power naps yesterday due to severe weather, I decided to hit
the sack as soon as the severe weather detail ended last night. At 9:00 p.m.
I hit the king-sized bed. At 9:01, guess who joined me. I felt a plunk and
little Miss Molly was standing on my chest with a toy in her mouth. She left
and came back with two more and I felt like I was being invaded. Net
result-we had an hour long play session on the bed letting her chase her
toys and cuddling. I felt like I had made up to her for a lot of lost
playtime lately. Life goes on-sleep or no sleep, storms or sunshine...we
love life.

...The heat backs off a bit...

For most Alabama communities, yesterday was the hottest day so far this
year. Montgomery led the way with 98 degrees, with Tuscaloosa reaching 96
and Birmingham 95. The good news is that the heat will back off a little
today, with afternoon temperatures peaking in the low 90s in most places.
Not exactly an Arctic blast, but at least a slight improvement.

We will have to maintain the chance of a few thunderstorms this afternoon,
but they should be relatively widely scattered. Drier air to the north of us
never really makes it down here, so for the weekend we are going with your
standard mid-July forecast with hot and humid days, ample sunshine, and the
risk of a passing afternoon thunderstorm in a few spots. Highs over the
weekend will be in the 88 to 92 degree range.

STORMY TUESDAY: Afternoon storms yesterday produced winds strong enough to
knock down trees and power lines over much of east Alabama. Our weathernet
station at the Talladega Superspeedway measured a peak wind gust of 52 mph,
while 49 mph was observed in downtown Anniston on Noble Street. A mobile
home caught fire in Wadley due to a lightning strike.

In northwest Alabama, rainfall amounts of 4 to 5 inches were responsible for
flooding over western parts of Colbert and Franklin counties. Those same two
counties were under a tornado warning for a while, but no major damage was
reported from the storms.

OZONE: A code yellow forecast for the Birmingham metro area today, meaning
air quality is expected to be moderate.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains quiet, and tropical storm formation is
not expected for at least the next three days.
