A complex weather system is still affecting Alabama this afternoon.
Our powerhouse upper low is centered over northwestern Arkansas. A
994 millibar surface low is located over southern Missouri. A trough
extends from the surface low down across Alabama. That trough was
along the Alabama/Mississippi border at 2:30 p.m. Showers did
redevelop ahead of the trough during the early afternoon hours, but
they moved into Georgia soon thereafter. Tornado watches being
contemplated for parts of the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys from
Northeast Alabama northward. There still could be tornadoes and other
severe weather through the evening hours ahead of the low.

DRIER WEATHER AHEAD: Back over Mississippi, dewpoints have been
falling like a brick behind a cold front. The dewpoint dropped 8
degrees in one hour to 53F as the front passed. Then just 75 miles
back in the drier air, the dewpoint at Greenwood was own to 37F. The
drier air will headline our weather into Monday. Skies had cleared to
the south and west, allowing for sunshine. Clouds wrapping around the
upper low will move over Alabama tonight and likely give us a cloudy
start on Sunday. There could even be a little light rain over
northern sections on Sunday. But sunshine should return by late
morning. Highs tomorrow will be in the 50s with the clouds and strong
cold air advection. Light frost is possible Sunday night as clear
skies and calm conditions prevail. Lows will average around 39
degrees, with the colder spots in the middle 30s and some lower 30s in
the coldest. Sunny skies will greet the day on Monday and a quick
warm up will be in store, with highs topping out in the lower 70s.

EARLY WEEK STORM SYSTEM: By Monday, another strong surface low will
be developing over Oklahoma. Clouds will enter the area again by
Monday night and we should see showers and storms entering the area by
Tuesday morning. It looks like a pretty decent rain event and there
will be storms involved, but significant severe weather is not
expected at this time. Most Central Alabama spots will get an inch of
rain from this one. South Alabama could see a lot more, something
they don't want to hear.

SPACE SHUTTLE SUCCESSFUL LANDING: The Space Shuttle Discovery landed
successfully at the Kennedy Space Center around 2:14 p.m. CDT today
after a 12+ day mission to the International Space Station. Weather
at the Cape caused mission controllers to wave the orbiter off on its
first landing opportunity when ceilings and crosswinds were a
problem. By waiting, the seabreeze kicked in and helped to improve
the conditions. Welcome home Discovery!

ON THIS DATE IN 1963: A decision was handed down in the case Whitney
Barbie v. United States of America in the U.S. District Court, West
District, Louisiana. Barbie had sued the U.S. Weather Bureau for
negligence in "failing to give adequate warning concerning the nature,
intensity, location, path, velocity and speed, existence of tidal wave
of hurricane, as well as correct time it would strike the Louisiana
coast." Barbie's wife and five children were killed as the family
clung to floating debris after the 12 foot storm surge of Hurricane
Audrey struck Cameron Parish Louisiana on the morning of June 27,
1957. It was ruled that the evidence presented did not establish
negligence of the part of the Weather Bureau.

ADDITIONAL RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 1 AND A HALF TO 2 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE
IN THE WARNED AREA. THIS RAIN WILL FALL OVER SOILS THAT ARE SOAKED
FROM HEAVY RAINS OF THE LAST FEW DAYS. 10 TO 15 INCHES OF RAIN HAS
FELL OVER THE LAST FEW DAYS ALONG A NARROW STRIP FROM STONE COUNTY
MISSISSIPPI ACROSS NORTHWEST MOBILE COUNTY TO SOUTHERN CLARKE COUNTY
ALABAMA.

EXCESSIVE RUNOFF FROM HEAVY RAINFALL WILL CAUSE FLOODING OF SMALL
CREEKS AND STREAMS...HIGHWAYS AND UNDERPASSES. ADDITIONALLY...COUNTRY
ROADS AND FARMLANDS ALONG THE BANKS OF CREEKS...STREAMS AND OTHER LOW
LYING AREAS ARE SUBJECT TO FLOODING.

DO NOT DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE INTO AREAS WHERE THE WATER COVERS THE
ROADWAY. THE WATER DEPTH MAY BE TOO GREAT TO ALLOW YOUR CAR TO CROSS
SAFELY. MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND.

MOST FLOOD DEATHS OCCUR IN AUTOMOBILES. NEVER DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE INTO
AREAS WHERE THE WATER COVERS THE ROADWAY. FLOOD WATERS ARE USUALLY
DEEPER THAN THEY APPEAR. JUST ONE FOOT OF FLOWING WATER IS POWERFUL
ENOUGH TO SWEEP VEHICLES OFF THE ROAD. WHEN ENCOUNTERING FLOODED
ROADS MAKE THE SMART CHOICE...TURN AROUND...DONT DROWN.

DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF FLOOD WATERS. ONLY A FEW INCHES OF
RAPIDLY FLOWING WATER CAN QUICKLY CARRY AWAY YOUR VEHICLE.
