...Warm Days Ahead..

Clouds have hung tough across much of Alabama on this Saturday. Dense
fog advected inland over South Alabama overnight, reducing
visibilities to near zero in many locations. Over Central Alabama,
visibilities dropped to less than three miles at times. Despite the
clouds, temperatures have warmed to near 70 degrees across Central
Alabama and will make the lower and middle 70s. If we had more
sunshine, locations might have threatened to hit 80.

OUR FORECAST: A large trough over the western United States is
causing a variety of weather problems as moist air overrides a colder
airmass in place from Central Plains into the Great Lakes states.
Freezing rain advisories and winter storm watches are in effect.
Heavy snow is expected in parts of the Rockies, especially over the
San Juans of southwestern Colorado where a foot of snow may fall.
Great news for skiers. Alabama will remain in a relatively warm and
moist airmass through midweek. There could be a shower at just about
anytime through tomorrow with the moist airflow and a weak front just
to our northwest. The chances for any rainfall in the Monday and
Tuesday timeframe look very small. We will threaten the record highs
for tomorrow, Monday and Tuesday, which are 74F, 73F and 76F
respectively. By Wednesday, a fairly strong low pressure system will
form over Arkansas and move northeast. As it does, rain and maybe a
few storms will form late on Wednesday. A band of showers and storms
will move through Alabama Wednesday night, ending from the west
Thursday morning. High pressure will build in for the remainder of
the week. A bigger rain system could affect Alabama around the 17th.

SHUTTLE LAUNCH FORECAST: Everything looks good weather wise for a
prospective launch of the Space Shuttle Atlantis on Sunday afternoon.
NASA engineers are still trying to determine whether or not to launch
because of a fuel gauge problem on the shuttle's external tanks.
Launch is now scheduled for 2:21 p.m. CST tomorrow. The weather
should be excellent with warm and partly cloudy conditions and light
winds.

SEVERE CYCLONE DAMAN: The island of Cikobia on the northern fringes
of the South Pacific island archipelago of Fiji was flattened on
Friday by severe cyclone Daman. The powerful tropical cyclone
flattened the island as all of its residents hid in caves. No one was
injured. The category four cyclone had top winds of 155 mph at the
time, but has since weakened. It is moving slowly westward, but will
curve around the east over the next few days as it continues to
weaken. The island is no stranger to severe tropical cylones having
experienced Kina in 1993, Gavin in 1997 and Ami in 2003. The prime
time for cyclones in the South Pacific is October through May.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: Over one million residents of North Carolina
were still without power four days after the worst ice storm in
state's history glazed much of the state with up to an inch of ice.
The ice coated trees and power lines, brining them crashing to the
ground. At the height of the outage, over two million people were in
the dark, nearly double the number during 1989's Hurricane Hugo. A
tragedy began to unfold as residents used unorthodox methods to keep
warm. Over 100 people were hospitalized and two died from carbon
monoxide poisoning. One man died after using a charcoal grill to heat
his home and another died while using a generator in an enclosed sun
porch area. National Guardsmen went door to door to caution residents
about heating t heir homes improperly and to notify them about the
availability of shelters.

...Unseasonably Warm...

The next few days will feature unseasonable warmth across
Alabama. Today will see highs generally around 70 degrees. It would
be much warmer except
for the persistent deck of low clouds and dense fog that is present
this morning.

NEAR RECORD WARMTH: Today's record (79F) is not in any
danger unless dramatic clearing happens. Clouds will probably subvert
a record setting day tomorrow again as clouds will hang tough again
for the better part of the morning. But Sunday's record of 74F will
be much more attainable. Same for Monday's record of 73F and perhaps
Tuesday's record of 75F.

RAIN CHANCES: A moist airmass and ripples in the
southwesterly flow aloft will trigger a few light showers across the
area today. But rain chances and amounts will be small. Showers
could be a little more numerous tomorrow, but still, rainfall will be
spotty and light. Not much change is expected through Tuesday with
warm days and mild nights. The big western trough will weaken and
lift out early in the week and push a weakening cold front our way
Wednesday night into Thursday. We expect a quarter inch of rainfall
with this system, not enough to scratch the surface of our drought.
High pressure will build in for the end of the week and start of the
weekend.

LONG RANGE LOOK: Out in voodooland, a good looking rain
system looks like it might affect Alabama and the South around the
17th, followed by another one just before Christmas. It would take a
five to six inch rainfall event to bring our lakes and reservoirs back
to their normal winter levels.

WESTERN WINTER STORM: A plethora of winter weather
advisories, watches and warnings are in effect for a wide area of the
nation this weekend. A fairly significant ice storm could affect
areas from Oklahoma to Illinois.

SATELLITE OUTAGE: Engineers have isolated the problem
with the GOES-12 satellite that surfaced during a maneuver this week.
They will put the satellite back into normal operations on Monday.
The GOES -10 satellite has been used to provide coverage of the
eastern U.S. and western Atlantic since the failure. .

2008 ATLANTIC HURRICANE FORECAST: The Colorado State
team has issued their long range forecast for tropical cyclone
activity next summer. They are calling for 13 named storms and 7
hurricanes of which 3 will go on to become major hurricanes. This is
slightly above the long term averages of 10, 6 and 2 respectively.

SHUTTLE LAUNCH FORECAST: NASA Managers have pushed the
launch of the Shuttle Atlantis back to Sunday. Weather conditions at
the Cape are predicted to be very good tomorrow, with partly sunny
skies after a foggy start. Winds will not be a problem.

ON THIS DATE IN 1963 Pan American Flight 214, a Boeing
707, crashed in open country east of Elkton, Maryland after being
struck by lightning, killing all eighty one persons on board. The
lightning apparently caused an explosion in one of the outboard wing
tanks.

===================================================================

NEAR RECORD HIGHS OVER THE WEEKEND: We are in for a significant warm
up across Alabama with temperatures reaching well into the 70s
Saturday and at least through next Tuesday. Latest indications are
that we will not start another cool down until about the middle of
next week and even then not a major change to colder. As a warm front
moves northward from the Gulf of Mexico, it will bring us some
cloudiness. In fact, we will be cloudy part of the time at least
through Tuesday even though we will have periods of sunshine.

THE CHANCE OF RAIN: Not real good. The latest model data indicates a
chance of a shower by Sunday and maybe even 1 or 2 on Saturday with a
slightly better chance later in the day Tuesday and Tuesday night.
That is a change from earlier model runs, so Saturday could be
completely dry.

It was another chilly morning across Alabama with lows in the 30s in
most areas. A few locations were around the freezing mark. It will be
a lot different tonight with lows mostly in the 50s, except for some
40s over the NE counties.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Lots of problems across the country, including
some potential flash flooding in Southern California, which will
create big mudslides in the burn areas. Heavy snow across the north
and Central Rockies and possibly a freezing rain event in the Central
Plains in places like Kansas. Temperatures will top out near 80 in
places like New Orleans and Houston over the weekend. The warmest in
the nation yesterday was 86 at Edinburg, Texas. Coldest in the lower
48 this morning was 17 below zero at Hallock, Minnesota. In Alaska, it
was 25 below zero at Chalkyitsik.

REMEMBERING: This is not exactly weather, but it is important. I was
only 9 years old when Pearl Harbor was attacked on this date in 1941.
I was growing up in Havana Junction where there was no electricity at
that time. I was already a confirmed news junkie even at that early
age. I heard the first bulletins about the attack and ran as fast as I
could to the only country grocery store in the area to let them know.
I was too young to go to war, but not one appreciates our military
more than I do, including all of the troops fighting overseas in
several countries at this time to maintain our freedom. I also heard
the first bulletin when FDR died at Warm Springs, Georgia and also
raced to the grocery store to let them know about that.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Melissa Smith from Tuscaloosa, who
searched over a year for her missing dog Munchkin in the Eastern
Birmingham area, passed along a note about another lost dog in the
Crestwood area. His name is Charlie and he is a beautiful golden
retriever. He lived at 5306 8th Avenue South and his phone number is
592-7222. I am also very upset today about an incident in Russellville
where two dogs were tied to a railroad track so they would get run
over and killed. I simply do not understand. Little Miss Molly cuddled
closely again last night and I appreciate her more and more every day.
When I think back at how we almost did not have Little Miss Molly, I
cringe. Her outgoing attitude when she was a tiny puppy won her a trip
to Birmingham. Life goes on.....

...Record Weekend Warmth Possible...

A BREAK FROM COLD WEATHER: A warming trend begins across Alabama
today; most communities will reach the low 60s today as a southerly
wind flow begins. Moisture levels will also increase, meaning cloudy
periods today, but we don't expect any rain. The warm-up is even more
impressive over the weekend as afternoon temperatures soar into the
70s. We are forecasting a high of 74 tomorrow, and 75 on Sunday. These
values are over 15 degrees above normal, and if we do hit 75 on
Sunday, that will be a new record high for the date (the current
record high for December 9 is 74, set in 1946. We should note here the
warmest December temperature on record in Birmingham is 80 degrees,
recorded on this date (December 7) in 1951.

There will be cloudy periods over the weekend, and a rogue shower
might pop up somewhere, but most communities will remain dry since
there is no well defined trigger for rain.

TO THE WEST: A major winter storm is developing today over the western
part of the nation; the central and southern Rockies will be slammed
with very heavy snow, with rain for the lower elevations. Ice is
possible with this system late in the weekend over parts of Oklahoma,
Kansas, and Nebraska. This storm won't move much over the weekend, but
it will begin to lift out early next week, and that holds the key to
our next decent chance of rain here in Alabama.
It looks like the trailing front will bring a chance of showers to
Alabama Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night. Unfortunately, the
primary system will be weakening and moving well to the north of
Alabama, and we really don't expect a big rain event. Rain amounts
will be in the one-quarter to one-half inch range, and severe
weather is not expected. Much cooler air will move into Alabama on
Wednesday of next week following the front.

DROUGHT MONITOR: Birmingham's rain total for 2007 is 27.11", which is
23.28" below normal. Unless we get seven inches of rain in the next
four weeks, this will
be the driest year on record.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: An unusual early season snow storm from Kansas
to Tennessee. Freezing rain on power lines cut electricity to
thousands of homes in northeastern Arkansas and Tennessee. 40,000
homes in Nashville were without power for several hours.

ACROSS THE FROZEN TUNDRA: Coldest spot in the continental U.S.
yesterday morning was Embarrass, Minnesota with 28 degrees below zero.
The coldest place in Alaska was Arctic Village with 31 below zero.
Yesterday's low in Chicago was zero, a new record low for the date.
Winter doesn't officially begin until 12:08 a.m. December 22, the day
of the winter solstice.

DO NOT LOOK FOR MUCH RAIN: Oh, how many times we have said that
lately. In fact, that has been on the tip of our tongue for almost the
entire year. Jason Elliott, forecaster for the NWS in Huntsville (No
kin, but I wish there was. We both grew up in West Alabama.), issued a
lengthy summary of the drought situation this morning. He mentioned
that Smith Lake in NW Alabama was at a 35-year low. All 67 Alabama
counties have been declared natural disaster areas by the federal
government due to the drought. The latest U.S. Drought Monitor places
almost half of Alabama in the Exceptional drought category. The worst
affected areas are over NE Alabama. This statistic will blow your
mind. Since January 1, 2005, the Huntsville rain deficiency stands at
58.05 inches. That means they have lost out on a full year of rain
plus about 4 inches.

DO NOT LOOK FOR MUCH IMPROVEMENT: Our latest forecast mentions a
small chance of a shower Sunday and Monday. Even if that happens, the
amounts will be sparse and of little or no use. A warming trend sets
in tomorrow and by this weekend our high temperatures will be well
above normal.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: It is getting more and more interesting across
the USA, especially in areas to the north. Some significant winter
weather will affect a broad area of the northern half of the country
over the next several days. Even Southern California was expecting
some heavy rain and you know what that will do to the burned areas. It
means big mudslides. Out in the Hawaiian Islands, lots of landslides,
flooding and road closures have been reported on the summits of the
big island and Haleakala. Temperatures will stay below freezing and
blizzard conditions are expected. The wind will be howling at 50 mph
and whiteout conditions could occur. They may get one-half foot of snow.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: You have heard stories about people who
get lost in the snow in the Plains and their dog comes to the rescue
and keeps them warm overnight. On a much smaller scale, Little Miss
Molly realized I was very sick Wednesday night. I was running a fever
with bed-shaking chills and I (the warmest natured guy north of the
equator) could not get warm. Molly usually sleeps at the foot of the
bed. That night she cuddled close to my chest all night and laid her
head across my arm and even pressed against my cheek to try to keep me
warm. Life goes on.....

...A Brief Cool Down Today...

A DRY COLD FRONT passed through Alabama last night, producing gusty
north winds and a quick change to cooler temperatures. The wind gusted
to 47 mph at our Inverness SKYCAM location at the Wingate Inn on U.S.
280, and 41 mph at the SKYCAM site in downtown Birmingham atop the
Daniel Building on 20th Street. Today's forecast will include ample
sunshine, and daytime temperatures about 10 degrees cooler than
yesterday. Most spots will wind up in the low to mid 50s today, a
little below normal for the 6th of December (our average high today in
Birmingham is 58 degrees).

MUCH WARMER WEATHER AHEAD: While we do expect a brief cool-down today,
a warming trend will quickly begin tomorrow as winds in the lower
levels veer to the south. We should see a high around 60 tomorrow, and
then over the weekend we are forecasting highs in the low to mid 70s
around here, which is very close to record territory. Moisture levels
will also increase, and accordingly there will be an increase in
clouds, but the prospect of organized rain is very small. There might
be a few rogue showers in isolated spots, but a large percentage of
Alabama will be dry tomorrow through Sunday.

TO THE WEST: While we enjoy near record warmth on Saturday and Sunday,
a major winter storm will bring heavy snow to the southern Rockies,
and heavy rain for the lower elevations. This system will finally
begin to lift to the northeast early next week, passing north of
Alabama by mid-week. The trailing cold front will bring the chance of
showers to Alabama by late Tuesday night and Wednesday, but with
weakening dynamics, a major rain event doesn't look especially likely
at this time. Colder air will follow the front during the latter half
of next week, but nothing extremely cold for December.

LONG RANGE: The primary American computer model continues to suggest a
decent rain event is possible around December 16 as a strong wave
passes through the state, followed by a sharp change to colder
weather. Of course, there isn't too much skill in a specific weather
forecast beyond seven days, so this could change. But, the model has
been very consistent in the idea.

GLOBAL WARMING? Snow is possible in elevations above 8,500 feet on the
island of Maui in Hawaii during the next 24 hours. Yep, snow in
Hawaii. Here in the continental U.S., there is a vast snow cover now
from the Midwest, across the Great Lakes, and eastward to the
Washington/Baltimore area. Coldest spots in Alaska yesterday morning
were Arctic Village and Northway with 27 degrees below zero. Hallock,
Minnesota dropped to 20 degrees below zero. In Fargo, North Dakota
yesterday, the temperature remained below zero all day; their high was
three below. Duluth, Minnesota reported a high of 9 above zero with 15
inches of snow on the ground.

===================================================================

SEARCHING FOR RAIN: We will be searching, but I am afraid we won't
find too many raindrops around here for the next seven days. All of
the action today is to the north of Alabama, where snow continues fall
in a broad zone from roughly Cincinnati to Washington, D.C. The snow
is the result of an Alberta Clipper, a weather system that originated
in Canada (most systems like this have an origin in the province of
Alberta). It produced snow totals generally in the 2 to 6 inch range
yesterday and last night across the Midwest; the heaviest amount was
from Duluth, Minnesota, where 15 inches covers this city this afternoon.

A surface boundary/cold front that extends south from this disturbance
will pass harmlessly through Alabama tonight, and bring a fresh supply
of cool and dry air in here tomorrow. Temperatures across Alabama this
afternoon are generally in the mid 60s (Birmingham is reporting 64
degrees at early afternoon), but maximum values tomorrow should be ten
degrees cooler thanks to the air coming across the snow fields north
of our state. We will be close to freezing early tomorrow morning.

WEEKEND WARM-UP: Look for some very mild weather this weekend; we will
be close to 60 on Friday, and lows 70s are expected for both Saturday
and Sunday. Southerly winds will also bring increasing moisture levels
to the state, but with no well defined trigger for rain, we still
believe most of the weekend will be dry. There could be a few rogue
showers in isolated spots, but for now the chance of really
significant rain looks very small Friday through Sunday.

BIG WINTER STORM AHEAD FOR THE SOUTHWEST U.S.: Winter storm watches
have been posted for a large part of the southern Rockies as an
intense early season winter storm will form Friday over the southwest
part of the nation. This will bring some big time snow amounts to the
ski resorts, making the skiers happy. Snow is likely down into the
mountains of Arizona and New Mexico by Friday night and Saturday, and
heavy rain is possible for low elevations. Phoenix will have a much
better chance at beneficial rain this weekend than Birmingham; in fact
some of the Arizona desert areas could see over two inches of rain.

NEXT WEEK: The big winter storm out west will kick out across the
nation's heartland early next week, but it will be weakening, and the
trailing front will bring just a few showers to Alabama by the middle
of next week on Wednesday. Unfortunately, it sure doesn't look like a
major rain event. Birmingham's rain deficiency for the year is 23
inches on the nose, and Tuscaloosa is over 29 inches below normal for
2007. Unless we get seven inches of rain in the next four weeks, 2007
will be the driest year on record for Alabama.

ROAMING: Grand Forks, ND reported 8.1 inches of snow yesterday,
breaking the daily snow record for December 4 set in 1926. Coldest
places in the nation this morning were Chandalar Lake and Arctic
Village, Alaska with 33 degrees below zero. And, no Miss Molly story
today; J.B. is fighting off the "crud"; hopefully he will be back in
the saddle before the week is over!

...Clipped By A Clipper...

MAIN WEATHER ACTION STAYS UP NORTH: An Alberta Clipper type weather
system produced a band of relatively heavy snow last night in the
general area from Minneapolis, MN and Madison, WI to the Chicago area;
this disturbance will pass north of Alabama today as it brings snow to
places like Charleston, WV and Washington, DC during the next 24
hours. Around here, we expect a partly sunny day with a nice warm-up;
most communities will reach the low 60s this afternoon. A dry front
will pass through here during the evening hours, trailing the clipper,
and that will provide a fresh shot of cool and dry air tomorrow. The
high tomorrow afternoon will be about 5 to 8 degrees cooler than we
expect today.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: A warming trend will headline our weekend
forecast; we expect a high in the low 60s Friday, upper 60s Saturday,
and low 70s Sunday as a southerly low level flow develops. Moisture
levels will also increase, but there isn't much to squeeze out rain,
and for now we won't mention rain in our formal weekend forecast. A
few isolated showers could pop up, but it sure looks like most places
around here will stay dry.

LOOKING WEST: A major early season winter storm will form over the
Southwest U.S. Friday, bringing the threat of heavy snow to the
southern Rockies, with rain for the lower elevations. This weather
system won't be a in hurry to move; all of the precipitation will
remain well west and north of Alabama through early next week. We will
finally have some chance of showers around Wednesday of next week as
the system weakens and lifts out to the northeast, passing north of
Alabama, but for now it doesn't look like a major rain event.

The primary American global model suggests the next decent chance of
beneficial rain will come around December 15-16, but that is only a
chance since there is very little skill in a specific weather forecast
beyond seven days.

THE NUMBERS KEEP RISING: Of course, we are talking rain deficits.
Deficiencies for 2007 include 23.00" at Birmingham, 29.08" at
Anniston, and 29.28" at Tuscaloosa. As of today, the official rain
total for the year at Birmingham is only 27.11". There is a very good
chance that this will be driest year on record; currently the driest
year (since 1900) is 1904 with 34.32".

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: A large percentage of the Midwest and the
Northeast is snow covered this morning. The Alberta Clipper dropped 15
inches of snow
at West Duluth, Minnesota yesterday. Chicago was expecting 2 to 5
inches of snow overnight, and flight delays were already reported last
night at O'Hare Airport. A snow advisory is in effect for Washington
and Baltimore today, where 1 to 3 inches are possible. Coldest place
in the U.S. yesterday morning was Northway, Alaska with a rather
amazing 46 degrees below zero. The high in Northway yesterday was 21
below zero.

===================================================================

RAIN DEFICIENCY GROWING LARGER: Unless we get some rain, the 2007
rain deficit at Tuscaloosa Airport will reach an almost unheard of 30
inches by next Monday. The chance of any beneficial rain between now
and then seems rather remote. There are some hints of an isolated
shower or two at some point this weekend, but whatever occurs will be
widely spaced and not enough to help the situation. In fact, we have
left the mention of rain out of our 7-day forecast all the way through
Sunday.
Dew points were very low this afternoon and we are in for another
rather chilly night, although not as cold as last night. Some of the
colder valleys will probably touch the freezing mark again tonight.
The average low we are using across Central Alabama is 34.

There was considerable frost last night and early this morning and
moderate to heavy in many areas. A few of the overnight low
temperatures:

21 in Remlap
22 Cottondale
23 Valley Head, Crossville
24 Rainbow City, Hamilton
25 Mumford
26 Moody, Heflin

The final low for Birmingham Airport was 28 recorded shortly after
6:00 a.m. It was also 28 in Tuscaloosa and 27 in Anniston. A milder
trend will be the story for the remainder of the week, although
another front will cool us down a bit again on Thursday.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: The Northern USA has been hit hard by storms
and wintry weather, including substantial snow over the north and NE.
The latest snow survey shows that 28% of the lower 48 states was
covered by snow this morning. That is a good start for the winter
season. Snow covers most of Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and Montana
mountains and into the Pacific Northwest. There is also a snow cover
from near Rapid City, Des Moines, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and New York
northward. Washington and Oregon have caught the most damaging
weather. Literally thousands of trees were uprooted the last two days
as winds gusted over 100 mph in coastal locations, including 129 mph
at Bay City, Oregon. Numerous mudslides and flash floods wiped out
numerous roads. Power outages were widespread. Cold temperatures this
morning included 46 below zero at Northway, Alaska and 3 below at
Baudette, North Dakota. It is expected to drop to 58 below tonight at
Summit on the Greenland icecap and to 65 below by Saturday.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Believe it or not, I have not had a
ballgame with Molly in nearly five days. Since the population of her
abode tripled, I do not get as many chances to play with her. On
Saturday we had 16 people here for our little great grandson's first
birthday. Molly had to greet everyone individually, but then there was
so much confusion for her that she went to the nearest nook and corner
where she could find some peace. On a walk yesterday, she got to greet
her lover boy, the young Yorkie, and they had a ball. Life goes on.....

...Generally Dry For the Next Seven Days...

RAIN DEFICITS CONTINUE TO GROW: As of today, Birmingham's rain
deficiency for 2007 is 22.85". As bad as that sounds, it is even drier
to the east and to the west. Anniston's deficit is up to 28.95", while
Tuscaloosa is 29.12" below normal for the year. It will take a long
time to dig out from this serious drought which continues to grip much
of the Southeast U.S.

In Huntsville, the deficit since January 2005 is a remarkable 57.51";
that is over a year's worth of rain that is simply missing. This is
the driest multi-year period in North Alabama since 1941-1943. All 67
Alabama counties have been declared disaster areas by the federal
government due to the persistent drought conditions.
Unfortunately, in the short term, we don't see any significant rain
event for the next five to seven days. A clipper type system will move
north of Alabama tomorrow, dragging a cold front down this way
tomorrow night. It will pass through in dry fashion, and a new shot of
cooler and drier air will roll in here by Thursday.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: Moisture levels will slowly increase on Saturday and
Sunday, but there is no real trigger for rain, so at this point we
expect a partly sunny sky on Saturday and Sunday with mild afternoons.
We expect a high in the mid 60s Saturday, with upper 60s on Sunday. To
the west, a major storm system will get its act together over the
Southwest U.S., but most likely it will be the middle part of next
week before that will bring any chance of significant rain to Alabama.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Big time cold continues to build over parts of
Alaska and Canada; the low yesterday morning was 44 degrees below zero
at Northway, Alaska, where the high was a toasty 31 below zero.
Coldest spot in the continental U.S. yesterday morning was Wahpeton,
North Dakota with 15 below zero. High wind and flash flooding combined
for a very rough day yesterday in the Pacific Northwest; winds gusted
to 129 mph at Bay City, OR. The rain total at Seattle was 4.01".

GEARING UP FOR WINTER: This week is "Winter Weather Awareness Week" in
Alabama as proclaimed by Governor Bob Riley. The goal of the week is
to highlight the need to be prepared for the dangers of a severe
winter weather event. While you don't expect too many serious winter
storms at this low latitude, we do have occasional bouts with freezing
rain, sleet, and snow, and those events often catch Alabamians off
guard. One of the most tragic winter weather events in Alabama came in
the period January 10-18, 1982, when sub zero cold was followed by a
crippling ice storm. Twenty people died, and over 300 were injured
during this event. During the ice storm, a total of 16,000 people were
forced into emergency shelters, and storm damage totaled 78 million
dollars.

A GENERAL FREEZE TONIGHT: Early this morning, the temperature was 37
at Muscle Shoals Airport, which represented a 33-degree freefall
overnight as colder air overspread the entire state. This afternoon
the cold front was pushing all the way into Central Florida. This will
leave a high pressure system to drift across Alabama tonight, which
means a general freeze for most of the north and central sections. It
may be one of those nights when we have a considerable variation in
temperature because the wind may not go completely calm in some of the
exposed areas until later tonight. Meanwhile, the better protected
valleys will go calm quicker and with dew points expected to be in the
low 20s by morning, we are calling for an average low across Central
Alabama of 26. It may be more like 30 or 31 on the ridges and a couple
of degrees colder in valleys like Ft. Payne Airport and Valley Head.

As the front moved across the state rather quickly overnight, a band
of showers was along and ahead of the front. There is an old saying,
"Do not forecast very much rain during drought." Again last night we
were short-changed. Most areas received about 1/5 of an inch or less.
One of the heavier amounts was 0.63 at DeSoto State Park. Now we must
look at a rather dry week ahead. There may be a small chance of some
showers about Friday, but the amounts look sparse this far ahead.
Temperatures this afternoon could not get out of the 40s over the
north part of the state. Quite a contrast to near 70 Sunday afternoon.

THE ATLANTA SITUATION: Again, they also were short-changed. Typical
rain amounts overnight in Atlanta included 0.19 at Atlanta Airport,
0.09 at Peachtree City and 0.27 at Marietta.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: It dropped to 15 below zero this morning at
Wahpeton, North Dakota. The coldest in Alaska was 40 below at
Northway. Temperatures have also fallen to around 40 below zero in the
Yukon Territory of NW Canada. Alabama can get some of its coldest
arctic outbreaks from Eastern Alaska and NW Canada. That is why we
watch that area closely all winter. We do not see any immediate threat
of a real arctic air mass reaching Alabama. This early season storm
has dumped heavy snow at a number of places in the Rockies north
eastward to Wisconsin and all the way into New England. The storm
deepened into a major low pressure area with a secondary center taking
over this morning off Cape Cod, Massachusetts. It could produce
coastal winds up to 70 mph.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A busy, busy weekend. Because of a
breakdown, I did not get home from Demopolis until very late Friday
night. I tippy-toed into the bedroom after 2:00 a.m. That amazing
little puppy keeps a time clock on me. She knew for sure that I had
been gone for too long. Even though she was sound asleep, she got up,
stretched as far as she could and yawned so widely that I could see
her tonsils in the dim light. All the while, her tail was swishing so
rapidly that her little rear end was sashaying. She gladly interrupted
her deep sleep to welcome me home like I had been gone for several
days. We had a big love session on the foot of the bed and we both
passed out. Life goes on.....

...Much Colder Today...

Today will feel much colder than the past couple of days thanks to a
strong cold front that moved through overnight. After last night's
showers, basically dry will be the weather word for the next few days
before another storm system approaches next weekend.

SUNDAY WARMTH/SHOWERS: A warm front moved northward across the state
yesterday and temperatures warmed into the upper 60s and lower 70s.
Tuscaloosa topped out at 73F. The state's warm spot was Evergreen,
which had a balmy afternoon high of 76F. Dewpoints surged into the
low 60s by late afternoon, giving the air a muggy feel. A band of
showers moved across the state during the evening and into the
overnight hours. Rainfall amounts were light.

CHILLIER TODAY: Strong northwesterly winds behind the front have been
ushering in colder air overnight and readings have retreated into the
40s. Skies will clear fairly quickly this morning, but with
northwesterly winds continuing to transport in colder air, readings
will struggle to get out of the 40s. As winds go nearly calm tonight
along with clear skies, the stage will be set for a light freeze in
many locations.

MIDWEEK: Tuesday will be mostly sunny and warmer with highs right
around 60 degrees. With very low humidities, there will be a high
wildfire danger Tuesday afternoon. On Wednesday, a disturbance
passing to the north of Alabama will cause some clouds, and perhaps a
light shower over northeastern sections. Another fast moving
disturbance will bring a chance of shower and storms Thursday night to
the area.

INTO THE WEEKEND AND BEYOND: Skies will clear on Friday and we will
be back in the middle 30s by Saturday morning. We will continue in a
fast moving
weather pattern, and moisture levels will be on the rise again by late
in the weekend. Another storm system will bring rain to Alabama
Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by another system Friday night into
Saturday. Look for more systems as our parade of weather continues
out well into voodoo land around the middle of the month. The GFS
hints at a big wet weather maker around Sunday night the 16th.

ON THIS DATE IN 1703: 400 windmills were destroyed by the greatest
gale in the history of England on this date. Many of the huge
structures burned down from fires which started as their blades turned
wildly in the 80 mph winds. In London, roofs blew off and chimneys
were toppled. The famed Eddystone Lighthouse was toppled by heavy
seas. 123 people died on land, and another 8000 died at sea as
hundreds of vessels from the British fleet were lost, including four
Men-Of-War. It was all caused by an extremely intense 950 millibar
low pressure system that passed north of London.

...Showers Tonight...
We tend to over value every rain chance that we get now, because of
our exceptional drought conditions. Last week's half inch that
officially fell at the Airport was not enough to keep our rainfall
deficit from growing again, standing now at 23 inches in Birmingham.
Tonight's showers will not slow down the runaway drought truck,
serving only as a speed bump followed by several days of continued
dryness unfortunately.

YOUR FORECAST: The storm system that has brought a variety of
inclement weather to a wide area of the nation is moving through the
Great Lakes states on this Sunday. A plethora of winter weather
watches, advisories and warnings is in effect over the Great Lakes and
Northeast U.S. Abundant moisture has spread northward ahead of this
Pacific system and showers will be possible across Alabama today. A
cold front that trails from the low pressure system over Michigan will
be approaching Alabama tonight. A band of showers will move through
the area starting this evening. Rainfall will last less than two
hours and amount to around a quarter of an inch accumulation. Our
winds will be breezy from t he southeast, but gradually veer to the
southwest and west this evening and increase to 10-20 mph. The
frontal passage will be marked by a wind shift to the northwest
overnight and temperatures will fall back into the 40s. Skies will
begin to clear by morning. Monday will be a raw day with a stiff
northwest wind and much colder temperatures. In fact, readings will
struggle to make 50 degrees. Only a good supply of sunshine may allow
the mercury to make it out of the 40s. Look for a light freeze
Tuesday morning, with an average low of 32F across the area. Colder
locations will make the upper 20s. Tuesday will be mostly sunny and
seasonably cool. A passing system will bring an increase in clouds on
Wednesday with a slight chance of a light shower, especially over
Northeast Alabama. Thursday will be highlighted by the reinforcing
shot of cooler air with our next wet weather system waiting until late
on Sunday.

BRIGHT MARS: The Earth and Mars are in a never ending race around
the Sun that the Earth is always winning. Having the inside track,
our planet laps the red planet every two years. As Earth starts to
overtake Mars in the planetary race, the red planet begins to get
brighter and brighter. It will continue to do that until it is at its
brightest on December 16th. This will be a special occurrence, as it
will be the brightest Mars will appear until 2016. So grab a chance
to check out a very bright Mars anytime between now and then. It
won't be tonight because of all the clouds.

ON THIS DATE IN 2004: Two typhoons in less than a week brought a
devastating one-two punch to the northern Philippines. Just four days
after Typhoon Winnie caused landslides that killed over five hundred
people, Typhoon Nanmadol impacted the same region with 115 mph
winds. Winds gusted as high as 138 mph. The toll from both storms:
over 650 dead and 400 missing. All logging was banned by the
country's President after the massive landslides were blamed on
illegal tree cutting.

...Showers In Our Future...

After a beautiful Saturday which saw temperatures warming to near 70
across Central Alabama, skies became cloudy overnight. There has been
quite an impressive moistening of the atmosphere since yesterday, with
dewpoints going from the 20s to the 50s in just 24 hours. By late
this afternoon, dewpoints across the area will be near 60, which is on
the muggy size. In addition to the clouds, a few showers will be
possible through the day today, but the main rain should come tonight.

SHOWERS TONIGHT: Fairly strong low pressure is approaching Milwaukee
this morning. A sharp trailing cold front is pushing toward Alabama.
Winds will pick up a bit through the day and it will feel a bit breezy
as well as a little humid. A band of showers will move across the
state this evening into the overnight. The rain duration will be
fairly brief. It looks now like rainfall amounts will be around a
quarter of an inch with some locations picking up one half inch.
Can't rule out a rumble of thunder, but it does not look likely.
Winds will pick up out of the west as the pre-frontal trough passes
tonight, averaging 10-20 mph during the overnight. Those winds will
shift to the northwest after midnight as the front moves through.
Temperatures will fall into the 40s by morning.

A RAW MONDAY: A chill northwest wind will usher in cooler and drier
air during the day on Monday. Skies should clear pretty quickly in
the morning. Temperatures will struggle to reach the 50s, but with a
good supply of sunshine, that could happen. Look for a light freeze
by Tuesday morning.

REST OF THE WEEK: Seasonably cool and mostly dry conditions will
highlight the rest of the week. The exception will be a passing
system on Wednesday that will briefly increase our clouds and could
bring a light shower to northern sections. It will mainly serve to
deliver a reinforcing shot of cool air and pushing highs back into the
50s for Thursday. High pressure over the Ohio Valley will move to the
East Coast by Friday, and our winds will turn back around to the
southeast, starting the warming and moistening process again.

Highs will edge back into the 60s for Friday and Saturday. But recent
runs of the GFS have kept the huge upper trough way back to the west
into the weekend, keeping us mainly dry. There could be a shower on
Saturday or Sunday, but it looks like the main rainfall will hold off
until late Sunday night into Monday the 10th. .

CRYSTAL BALL TIME: That rainfall event around the 10th looks like a
healthy one, with one inch rainfall amounts in the cards. Yeah right.
We will just have to wait and see. Out at the far edge of voodoo
land, the GFS still hints at a big system that could bring a
protracted wet period between the 15th and 17th, with more healthy
rainfall amounts.

ON THIS DATE IN 1982: A tornado destroyed a home south of Eastwood,
Missouri. The owners were uninjured, but one of them would be killed
by a tornado that hit their replacement mobile home on Christmas Eve.
