...Interesting Weather Ahead...

It has been a beautiful Saturday across Alabama. Regional radars are
taking a break. Visible satellite photos show some high cloudiness
over Mississippi that are streaming into parts of Central Alabama.
Noontime temperatures across Alabama were in the 60s, heading toward
the 70s for afternoon highs. The ideal weather conditions across the
state have prompted us to issue a Perfect Weather Warning for the area
for this afternoon. When a PWW is issued, you should drop what you
are doing and head outside to take advantage of the fine weather.
Hikes, yard work, baseball, golf or tennis are all recommended
activities.

TONIGHT: Expect increasing clouds tonight as isentropic lift starts
to occur of our next weather system. By late tonight, a large upper
trough will be positioned over the Central U.S. and a surface low will
be moving from Kansas into Missouri. The isentropic lift will result
in a some light rain or light showers in spots across the state.

SEVERE WEATHER TOMORROW? Just can't get too excited about the
possibility of significant severe weather tomorrow. This system is
obviously not as dynamic as our last system. There are indications
that the warm front will not move very far to the north tonight and
Sunday, keeping the focus for rain and storms well to our south during
much of the day. The morning will start off mostly cloudy, but there
could be a few breaks in the overcast during the morning hours.
Temperatures should warm into the middle 70s and dewpoints into the
lower 60s Sunday afternoon. This will result in weak to moderate
instability across the area Sunday afternoon. By late in the day,
CAPE values across Central Alabama should average 500 j/kg and lifted
indices should be around -5C. As this happens, there could be a
little severe weather, but the main action should come in the form of
a broken line of storms that will enter the state Sunday evening ahead
of the cold front.

FREEZE MONDAY AND TUESDAY NIGHT: Much colder air will spread into
Alabama behind the cold front. This will send temperatures into the
40s by Monday morning, with afternoon highs only expected to get into
the 50s. Recent model runs have hinted at the possibility of a little
light rain or perhaps even a few snow flurries over North Alabama
Monday and Monday night. Clouds may hang tough into Tuesday, and
there are signs that we might not get out of the 40s Tuesday. Wow.
The warmup begins Wednesday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1977: After a noontime line of strong to severe
storms passed through Birmingham, many people figured the worst was
over. But statements from the National Weather Service in Birmingham
warned that the worst was yet to come. Shortly before 3 p.m., a
supercell thunderstorm dropped a tornado near US-78 in northwestern
Birmingham. The monster tornado roared northeast through the
Smithfield Estates subdivision as it embarked on a 15 mile path of
destruction, going on to blow cars off I-65 near Fultondale Fifty
homes were totally destroyed. Warnings were timely, including
dramatic live broadcasts on Birmingham's recently installed NOAA
Weatheradio. Yet 22 people died that day. Another 130 were
injured.

...1974: The Morning After...

When forecaster Jay Shelley walked out of the National Weather Service
office around noon on April 4, 1974, he had been on duty for nearly
twenty four terrible hours. As he walked to his car in the parking
lot at 11 West Oxmoor Road on the morning after the worst tornado
outbreak in history, he was not satisfied. He knew that the National
Weather Service staff had done the best that they could with what they
had, but still nearly one hundred Alabamians had died in the
onslaught. More in today's edition of Weather Talk.

CALL TO ACTION - PERFECT WEATHER WARNING: A weak ridge of high
pressure aloft and a surface high over northeastern Tennessee will set
the stage today for a beautiful Saturday across Central Alabama. It
will be perfect weather for the air show in Tuscaloosa or the Taste of
Asia Festival at the Cedars Club on Green Springs. Under mostly sunny
skies, highs today will warm well into the middle and upper 70s. High
clouds will begin to overspread the area later today ahead of our next
storm system, but they won't spoil the perfect weather.

CALL TO ACTION – SEVERE WEATHER LIKLEY SUNDAY: The Gulf will be open
for business by later today as southerly winds develop ahead of low
pressure over the Plains. A warm front will come northward late
tonight and Sunday morning. Showers and storms will accompany the
front. The warm front will also be followed by a surge of moisture.
Dewpoints Sunday afternoon will rise into the middle 60s across
Central Alabama. Temperatures will warm into the middle 70s Sunday
afternoon. This will produce a moderate amount of instability, with
CAPE values in the 500-1,000 j/kg range and lifted indices below -5C.
Wind shear will not be overly impressive, but there still could be a
few supercell storms Sunday afternoon that could produce a few
isolated tornadoes. A squall line will move into the state ahead of a
strong cold front Sunday evening, with a good chance of damaging
winds, hail and perhaps an isolated tornado.

CALL TO ACTION – FREEZE AHEAD: It's back to winter as colder air
flows into Alabama Sunday night. Temperatures will fall into the
middle 40s by Monday morning. Monday will feature persistent clouds,
a biting northwest winds and chilly readings in the middle 50s for
highs. Monday night will be very cold, with lows dropping into the
middle and upper 20s. This could produce a damaging freeze and
precautions should be taken to protect tender vegetation. Tuesday
looks to be even a few degrees chillier. Expect a light freeze
Tuesday night. Things will begin to warm up by Wednesday afternoon.

RED LETTER DAY IN ALABAMA WEATHER HISTORY: Monday, April 4, 1977
dawned windy, warm and humid across Alabama. A strong low pressure
system was moving across Missouri. A warm front brought rain and
storms to Central Alabama the day before. The brand new Weatheradio
station in Birmingham alerted its listeners to the threat for severe
weather that day. The storm system would produce one of the strongest
tornadoes on record, according to Dr. Ted Fujita. More this afternoon.

...Lull Between Two Storms...

MORE LIKE MARCH THAN APRIL: Thursday was a very active weather day
across Alabama. The entire state was under a moderate risk of severe
weather. Even though we did not have any very damaging tornadoes and
certainly not a major long-track tornado, I still believe the moderate
risk was justified.

It would be interesting to know how many thousand trees were uprooted,
especially over the NW and the western half of the state due to a
classic bow echo moving from border to border. Every time I see a line
of thunderstorms with a distinct bow echo, I feel for sure that trees
are being uprooted and also some other
wind damage. The NWS is surveying some of the damaged areas today.

The heaviest rains from the storm seem to be over the north part of
the state. A few examples:

1.86 Athens
2.45 Madison
2.31 Arkdell (Lauderdale County)
2.75 Belle Mina
2.79 North Huntsville
1.78 Decatur
1.62 Hamilton

A CHANGE IN THE AIR MASS: Almost every time in spring, when we have a
severe weather episode, cooler air is right behind. While temperatures
reached as high as 78 in Tuscaloosa yesterday, temperatures this
afternoon were in the 50s and 60s. Clouds hung tough part of the day,
but it will be clearing by this evening and there will be a chill in
the air when you go out to get the Saturday morning paper or even
indulge in a breakfast outing. Saturday will be mostly sunshine, but
we are going right back into another thunderstorm situation on Sunday.

By Sunday morning, a strong low-pressure area will be over Missouri
with a cold front approaching the Mississippi River. A few of our
thunderstorms on Sunday could be rather strong. In fact, the Storm
Prediction Center has most of the state under a slight risk. The cold
front that will move in after those storms is a sharp one. NW wind 12
to 25 mph on Monday with a high of only 53 will bring out the sweaters
and light coats.

A LATE, LATE SEASON FREEZE OR FROST is possible early Tuesday morning.
Colder air will still be moving into the area, so it is possible that
there will be enough wind to prevent the frost. Here in Central
Alabama, we are calling for a low of 28.

A DOUBLE ANNIVERSARY: Two very significant weather events on this
date. In 1987, we awoke to find nearly one-half foot of snow on the
ground in the Birmingham area with dogwoods and azaleas in full bloom.
We nicknamed it The Dogwood Snowstorm. There were 8 inches at Moody
and as much as 10 inches in parts of Central Alabama. It was supposed
to be a rain event, but temperatures got just cold enough in the
middle of the night to change it to all snow.

This is also the anniversary of the greatest tornado outbreak for the
nation. The tragic event lasted 16 hours producing 148 tornadoes in
about 13 states. 330 people died and 5,484 were injured. Over 7,500
dwellings were destroyed. Alabama had 86 fatalities and 949 injuries.
If you hooked all of the tornado paths together, it would have covered
2,598 miles. I worked that entire event while still in the National
Weather Service and I have a huge file of information and lots of
photographs. I hope to write a story on the BLOG next week about this.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I have hardly spoken to Little Miss
Molly in the last 24 hours. A long day yesterday with my final radio
update at 11:00 p.m. Straight to bed. Slept like a rock. Life goes on.

...Improving Weather For Alabama...

GRADUAL CLEARING: Improving weather headlines our forecast for Alabama
today in the wake of yesterday's thunderstorm event. Clouds could
linger into the late morning, but most places should enjoy a good
supply of sunshine this afternoon as dry air takes over. The weather
will be a little cooler today with a high in the mid to upper 60s.
Tomorrow promises to be a beautiful day with a good supply of sunshine
and a high in the mid 70s.

MORE STORMS ON SUNDAY: Yet another energetic weather disturbance will
roll into Alabama on Sunday with another chance of strong to severe
thunderstorms. While the rain won't fall all day, there will be a few
heavy downpours, especially Sunday afternoon, and the heavier storms
could produce hail and high winds. A tornado is possible in isolated
storms as well; something you pretty much expect in the core of
tornado season in Alabama. The storms will move out of the state
Sunday night.

LATE SEASON FREEZE: Another big story is the potential for a late
season freeze Tuesday morning. At this time, it looks like most places
will drop into the 25 to 30 degree range early Tuesday, with potential
for low 20s across the coldest valleys of North Alabama. This will be
very close to record low temperature levels, and could damage tender
plants and other vegetation.

We begin to warm up Tuesday afternoon, and by Thursday of next week
yet another significant storm system will roll into Alabama with
potential for showers and strong thunderstorms as this very active
weather pattern continues.

LAST NIGHT'S STORMS: A wicked bow echo moved through Northwest Alabama
last night, producing extensive tree damage across Marion, Lamar,
Pickens, Fayette, Winston, Walker, and parts of Tuscaloosa counties.
There was some structural damage as well, and reports of people
trapped in homes due to downed trees and powerlines. Power outages
were also widespread. To the north, a tornado touched down at a
trailed park in Lacey Springs, near Huntsville, but there were no
major injuries.

THIRTY FIVE YEARS AGO TODAY: The "superoutbreak". It was the worst
tornado outbreak in U.S. history with 148 twisters touching down in 13
states. Before it was over 16 hours later, 330 people were dead and
5,484 were injured in a damage path covering more than 2,500 miles. In
Alabama, 80 people lost their lives, and the community of Guin was
just about wiped out with extensive damage from an F5 tornado that
killed over 20 in that small Marion County community alone. Other
communities impacted that Wednesday night included Jasper, Cullman,
Huntsville, Harvest, and Hazel Green. The Walker County Courthouse in
downtown Jasper was heavily damaged by an F4 tornado, a long track
twister that started near Aliceville, and ended in the northern part
of Cullman County.

TORNADO WATCH NUMBER 108
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
300 PM EDT THU APR 2 2009

THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A
TORNADO WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF

SOUTHEAST ALABAMA
NORTH FLORIDA AND THE FLORIDA PANHANDLE
SOUTHERN GEORGIA
COASTAL WATERS

EFFECTIVE THIS THURSDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM 300 PM UNTIL
1000 PM EDT.

TORNADOES...HAIL TO 2 INCHES IN DIAMETER...THUNDERSTORM WIND
GUSTS TO 70 MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE
AREAS.

THE TORNADO WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 75 STATUTE
MILES NORTH AND SOUTH OF A LINE FROM 45 MILES WEST NORTHWEST OF
PANAMA CITY FLORIDA TO 25 MILES EAST NORTHEAST OF JACKSONVILLE
FLORIDA. FOR A COMPLETE DEPICTION OF THE WATCH SEE THE
ASSOCIATED WATCH OUTLINE UPDATE (WOUS64 KWNS WOU8).

REMEMBER...A TORNADO WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR

AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR
THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS
AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS.

OTHER WATCH INFORMATION...THIS TORNADO WATCH REPLACES TORNADO
WATCH NUMBER 103...TORNADO WATCH NUMBER 104. WATCH NUMBER 103 104
WILL NOT BE IN EFFECT AFTER 300 PM EDT. CONTINUE...WW 105...WW
106...WW 107...

DISCUSSION...A LARGE BAND OF THUNDERSTORMS IS EXPECTED TO PERSIST
THROUGH THE AFTERNOON/EVENING ACROSS N FL/S GA...WITH NEW
DEVELOPMENT LIKELY SPREADING INLAND FROM THE NE GULF. THE GREATER
THREAT FOR TORNADOES WILL BE WITH SURFACE-BASED CONVECTION ON THE
LEADING EDGE OF THE BAND...WHERE A GRADUAL INCREASE IN LOW-LEVEL
FLOW THROUGH THE AFTERNOON/EVENING WILL RESULT IN FAVORABLE VERTICAL
SHEAR FOR SUPERCELLS WITH A FEW TORNADOES. FARTHER W/N...SOMEWHAT
ELEVATED CONVECTION IS MORE PROBABLE TO THE N OF THE OUTFLOW
BOUNDARY WHICH REMAINS OFFSHORE. INCREASING WAA ABOVE THE SHALLOW
COLD POOL WILL SUPPORT A RISK OF LARGE HAIL AND POSSIBLY DAMAGING
WINDS WITH THE STRONGER STORMS ACROSS THE FL PANHANDLE AND SE AL/SW
GA.

AVIATION...TORNADOES AND A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL
SURFACE AND ALOFT TO 2 INCHES. EXTREME TURBULENCE AND SURFACE
WIND GUSTS TO 60 KNOTS. A FEW CUMULONIMBI WITH MAXIMUM TOPS TO
