...1974: The Morning After...

When forecaster Jay Shelley walked out of the National Weather Service
office around noon on April 4, 1974, he had been on duty for nearly
twenty four terrible hours. As he walked to his car in the parking
lot at 11 West Oxmoor Road on the morning after the worst tornado
outbreak in history, he was not satisfied. He knew that the National
Weather Service staff had done the best that they could with what they
had, but still nearly one hundred Alabamians had died in the
onslaught. More in today's edition of Weather Talk.

CALL TO ACTION - PERFECT WEATHER WARNING: A weak ridge of high
pressure aloft and a surface high over northeastern Tennessee will set
the stage today for a beautiful Saturday across Central Alabama. It
will be perfect weather for the air show in Tuscaloosa or the Taste of
Asia Festival at the Cedars Club on Green Springs. Under mostly sunny
skies, highs today will warm well into the middle and upper 70s. High
clouds will begin to overspread the area later today ahead of our next
storm system, but they won't spoil the perfect weather.

CALL TO ACTION – SEVERE WEATHER LIKLEY SUNDAY: The Gulf will be open
for business by later today as southerly winds develop ahead of low
pressure over the Plains. A warm front will come northward late
tonight and Sunday morning. Showers and storms will accompany the
front. The warm front will also be followed by a surge of moisture.
Dewpoints Sunday afternoon will rise into the middle 60s across
Central Alabama. Temperatures will warm into the middle 70s Sunday
afternoon. This will produce a moderate amount of instability, with
CAPE values in the 500-1,000 j/kg range and lifted indices below -5C.
Wind shear will not be overly impressive, but there still could be a
few supercell storms Sunday afternoon that could produce a few
isolated tornadoes. A squall line will move into the state ahead of a
strong cold front Sunday evening, with a good chance of damaging
winds, hail and perhaps an isolated tornado.

CALL TO ACTION – FREEZE AHEAD: It's back to winter as colder air
flows into Alabama Sunday night. Temperatures will fall into the
middle 40s by Monday morning. Monday will feature persistent clouds,
a biting northwest winds and chilly readings in the middle 50s for
highs. Monday night will be very cold, with lows dropping into the
middle and upper 20s. This could produce a damaging freeze and
precautions should be taken to protect tender vegetation. Tuesday
looks to be even a few degrees chillier. Expect a light freeze
Tuesday night. Things will begin to warm up by Wednesday afternoon.

RED LETTER DAY IN ALABAMA WEATHER HISTORY: Monday, April 4, 1977
dawned windy, warm and humid across Alabama. A strong low pressure
system was moving across Missouri. A warm front brought rain and
storms to Central Alabama the day before. The brand new Weatheradio
station in Birmingham alerted its listeners to the threat for severe
weather that day. The storm system would produce one of the strongest
tornadoes on record, according to Dr. Ted Fujita. More this afternoon.
