...More Storms?...

A LITTLE SATURDAY MORNING SHAKE, RATTLE AND ROLL… Showers and storms
formed early this morning over Northwest and West Central Alabama in
the juicy, messy airmass that was left over from Friday night's
storms. Numerous t roughs, outflow boundaries and fronts are lying
across the Southeast U.S. this morning. Maybe they are all here for
the Bonaroo Music Festival up in Tennessee. It draws a crowd you
know. But they have been making a little noise through the predawn
hours as they move southeast. They will give your thirsty lawn a
little drink this morning as they push southeastward.

MUDDLED FORECAST: The forecast performed according to plan with this
morning's shower and storm activity. We still find ourselves with
the apex of a ridge of high pressure to our west this morning, with a
northwesterly flow pushing this complex of storms southeastward. This
activity was slowly intensifying, and these, as well as other storms
could become severe later today. Watch out for lightning, high winds
and even some rain, as well as heavy rain and some flooding. The SPC
does have us outlooked for a slight risk of severe weather today. The
probabilistic forecasts give us a 15% chance of having one or more
severe wind or hail events within 25 miles of any location in the 15%
area today, which covers much of North and Central Alabama. I think
that we will be sort of stuck with this same pattern through much of
Sunday, meaning more showers and storms. We should return to a more
typical summertime patter by early in the week as the ridge of high
pressure expands over Alabama and we see fewer showers and storms again.

BACK TO RAINFALL DEFICIT: We had been operating with a rainfall
surplus over the past few weeks at the Birmingham Airport. But that
dissipated quickly over the past couple of weeks during an extended
dry spell. Last night's storms brought three tenths of an inch to
the Airport, temporarily erasing the newly minted deficit. This
morning's rain will help get us back on track.

BEACH WEATHER: A great time to visit the beautiful beaches of
Alabama and Northwest Florida in the week ahead. Skies will be mostly
sunny for the next few days, with only slight chances for an isolated
storm during the afternoon hours. It will be on the hot side, with
highs in the lower and middle 90s. Lows will be in the middle 70s.

OUT AND ABOUT: The Night Run and Fun, benefiting Big Brothers and Big
Sisters of Greater Birmingham, includes a four-mile run to raise funds
and awareness in the Hoover/Shelby County area. It will be held at
Veterans Park, Hoover at 6 p.m. this evening. $35. 939-5590. www.bbbsbhm.org

ON THIS DATE IN 1984: Tremendous hailstorm at Denver. Hailstones
of up to 4 inches in diameter were measured. Vehicle damage alone was
estimated at $150 million. Damage to homes and buildings totaled $200
million. Golfball size hail pounded some areas for forty minutes!
Snowplows had to be called out to clear the roads of the hail. The
hailstones injured twenty people. Ninety percent of the houses in the
town of Limon, Colorado suffered roof damage. Widespread flooding was
reported at Lakewood, Colorado. Three inch hail fell continuously for
45 minutes at Arvada.

It was a stormy Friday across Alabama. By early morning, we were
already starting to watch a complex of thunderstorms over eastern
Oklahoma. We knew that we were downstream of the activity, given the
west northwesterly winds aloft that curved over Arkansas and down into
northern Mississippi. Plus, the storm was going to be fed by warm,
moist and unstable sun warmed air all along its path. Throw in some
fairly strong winds up around 18,000 feet, and we knew that the
ingredients were in place for a derecho. A derecho is a long-lived
complex of thunderstorms that produces widespread wind damage over a
broad and long swath. In addition to the derecho, strong storms formed
ahead of the storm complex over West Central, Alabama by mid
afternoon. Many of them became severe.
WIDESPREAD WIND DAMAGE: Numerous reports of 50-70 mph winds were
received across Northwest and Central Alabama from the storms.
Numerous trees were blown down.

MORE STRONG STORMS: A long frontal boundary pushed southward
overnight. It separates the warm, moist and very unstable air mass to
the south from relatively drier and cooler air to the north. This
boundary will serve as a spark for additional storms today. Any storm
complexes that for back to the northwest will come our way once again,
so we will be dodging them. It looks that will be a possibility again
on Sunday. There will be plenty of instability across the area both
days, and some of the storms will become severe, producing damaging
winds, lightning, torrential rains and even some hail. So keep an eye
to the radar and the sky as you go about your business all weekend.

A NEW WORK WEEK: A weak upper ridge will remain just to the west of
Alabama through Monday and perhaps Tuesday. Alabama will find itself
on the front side of this ridge, and that means that storms that form
in the faster flow on the edge of the ridge will head our way. This
pattern will eventually change as the ridge

BEACH WEATHER: A great time to visit the beautiful beaches of Alabama
and Northwest Florida in the week ahead. Skies will be mostly sunny
for the next few days, with only slight chances for an isolated storm
during the afternoon hours. It will be on the hot side, with highs in
the lower and middle 90s. Lows will be in the middle 70s.

OUT AND ABOUT TODAY: Six private Birmingham gardens will be open today
from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. as a part of this nation-wide garden tour,
sponsored by the Garden Conservancy of America. A portion of proceeds
will benefit Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Maps are available at the
Birmingham Botanical Gardens and several local garden centers. $5 per
garden. 249-1030.

ON THIS DATE IN 1976: Lee Johnson of Milford, Missouri took an
unexpected flight when a tornado lifted the outhouse in which he was
sitting, blew it over a fence, spun it around and threw it face down
into the ground. The 95 year old Mr. Johnson escaped serious injury.

...Thunderstorms...

DEALING WITH MEAN OLD STORMS: North and Central Alabama are under a
Slight Risk of severe weather for the remainder of this afternoon and
tonight. Again tomorrow roughly the north half of the state will still
be under the gun. To our west, the Storm Prediction Center had
upgraded the risk to Moderate over much of Arkansas and the north part
of Tennessee.

At mid-afternoon today, thunderstorms were beginning to cross over
into West Alabama and others will be forming. A cluster of very strong
storms were moving across Central Arkansas with a distinct bow echo.
Around 2:30 this afternoon, NWS/Little Rock issued a Tornado Warning
for part of 4 counties in Central Arkansas. A tornado was suspected NE
of Lake Conway moving east at 45.

The stalled front, that has been zig-zagging across the midsection of
the U.S. for about a week, was beginning to move southward today. By
nightfall it will be stalling near the Tennessee/Alabama border,
although it could push a bit further south Saturday morning to
somewhere around Cullman. It will rest there until early in the week
and either become unidentifiable or head slowly back north.

So, what does all of this mean for Alabama? It would indicate that
most of the strongest thunderstorm activity would be over the north
and central counties. Some of those storms may be severe this
afternoon and evening and again Sunday. The history of this storm
system has featured an unusually large amount of lightning as well as
hail and damaging winds.

Finally, our thunderstorm activity will settle down to more typical
June stuff starting early next week. It will also be getting hotter in
Alabama as the new week goes on. We could see some temperatures as
high as the mid 90s about Monday or Tuesday.

AT THE BEACH: A small high-pressure system over the North Gulf of
Mexico is keeping the Alabama/NW Florida coast mostly free of storms.
In fact, at Gulf Shores there will be a lot of sunshine the next
several days with high temperatures around 90 or slightly above. The
sea surface temperature is in the mid 80s making the water comfortable.

LATE INFORMATION: The Storm Prediction Center posted a Severe
Thunderstorm Watch #389 until 10:00 tonight for a large part of North
Alabama. It extends as far south to include all of the greater
Birmingham area. Some strong storms were already crossing over into
West Alabama. We will have a busy afternoon and evening. There is no
rest for the weary, but that is all a part of our ballgame.

...Moisture Returning...
Our weather seems to be mired in a warm, humid pattern for the time
being. The main feature on weather maps this morning continues to be a
front that is hanging out to our north, from northern Arkansas through
northern Tennessee. Aloft, a flat ridge covers the Deep South, with a
west to east flow. Little disturbances rippling along in the flow will
trigger showers and storms from time to time through the weekend
before a big bubble of high pressure develops over our area next week.

STRONG STORMS TODAY: That front to our north will sag southward into
the warm and humid airmass over the Deep South. Dewpoints are in the
upper 60s to near 70 across the area, which is high octane fuel for
storms. Storms will fire today, and will be aided by 30-40 mph of
vertical wind shear. This means the storms will be more organized that
your typical summertime pulse storms. This means they will hold
together long enough to produce hail and even some strong winds. Be
alter for these threats and the ubiquitous deadly lightning as well as
very heavy rain.

WEEKEND: The upper ridge will build to the west of Alabama by
Saturday, putting us in a northwesterly flow aloft. This will make us
susceptible to thunderstorm complexes associated with any disturbances
that form to our northwest, and I would suspect there will be at least
one or two Saturday and Sunday. The ridge will shift eastward, giving
us hotter and drier conditions by Monday.

TROPICS: The GFS is notorious for trying to develop phantom tropical
systems early in the Atlantic Hurricane Season. This year has been no
exception, with the model predicting various tropical low pressure
systems over the southwestern Caribbean for over a week now. Nothing
has developed yet, and development does not seem likely in the near
future, with strong wind shear in place over the Caribbean. An upward
pulse in the Madden-Julian Oscillation will give a little boost in
storm activity over the Caribbean next week, so things could get a
little more interesting then. It's still early, early in the season
with a long way to go to November 30th.

NOT A NEW CLOUD TYPE?!?! I learned to classify clouds from the
handbook for a Boy Scout Weather merit badge. There were stratus, or
flat clouds. There were cumulus, or puffy clouds. Middle clouds had
the prefix alto- attached to their name. High clouds had the prefix
cirro- attached to them. If a cloud was producing rain, the prefix
nimbo- was added. Now the Cloud Appreciation Society is lobbying the
Royal Meteorological Society to add another cloud type. The clouds,
which look very turbulent and don't seem to easily fit into the
existing classifications, have been named "asperatus." Not a good
idea. I think Luke Howard's classification is working just fine,
thank you. It has been in place for over 200 years. Down with new
cloud types.

ON THIS DATE IN 1942: A tornado smashed a 4 block area in the
southwest suburbs of Oklahoma City, OK. 35 people were killed. The
twister completely demolished 73 homes and damaged 31 others. This
twister ranks as the seventh most deadly ever in the state.

...Scattered Thunderstorms Daily...

TURKISH BATH WEATHER: In Alabama, when the old RC Cola thermometer
reaches 90 or above and the dew point 70 or above, I call it Turkish
bath weather. It sure felt that way this afternoon when I walked my
little 9-pound puppy. She has a built-in thermometer and only halfway
around the walking track, she abruptly did a 180 and headed for home.
I was sure glad to see that, because my shirt was already getting wet
with perspiration. (We called that sweat in Havana Junction.)

While we were out, I could look off to the east and NE and see some
distant thunderheads. Those were the tops of storms over East Alabama
and there were several severe thunderstorm warnings this afternoon. A
trained storm spotter reported nickel-size hail in Pell City and hail
¾ of an inch in diameter occurred in Ohatchee in the early afternoon.
Ohatchee is located in Western Calhoun County and that place has
Popeye connections.

HOW LONG WILL WE HAVE STORMS? It looks like a daily part of our
weather menu for at least another week. The humidity will be high and
the old thermometer will be hugging that 90-degree mark every
afternoon. In fact, by the middle of next week we may see some highs
in the middle 90s.

SEVERE WEATHER: The Storm Prediction Center had more than the northern
half of Alabama under a Slight Risk of severe weather today. Tomorrow
they maintain a Slight Risk for about the north half of the state.
This is not tornado-type weather. Instead, the big storms will produce
strong winds and some large hail and downpours of rain. Never, ever
out of the question to have a tornado in this weather pattern, but
most of the time they are the weaker ones.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The Tropics are very quiet. This includes the
Atlantic, the Caribbean and our good friend, the Gulf of Mexico. Sea
surface
temperatures are getting to a point that a tropical storm or hurricane
would love it. At the Mobile Coast Guard Station the temperature was
84 this afternoon, 86 in Pensacola Bay and 86 over the East Gulf. Good
beach weather through the weekend.

GLOBAL ROAMING: What a terrific story coming out of Dallas/Ft. Worth.
Huge storms last night and today. At one time, ¼ million people in the
metroplex had no power. They got 4 to 5 inches of rain. Lightning
strikes were occurring at the rate of 600 every 5 minutes. More
thundersnow today in Yellowstone National Park. Cold spot this morning
29 at Truckee, California. Two persons struck by lightning in the last
24 hours. One 10-year-old walking in a park in Indianapolis was
killed. Another person in Shelby County, Kentucky in critical condition.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I have been as busy today as a snake
trying to cross US-280. Little Miss Molly sensed that and she attacked
the little doorbell like a Boxer pounding away in practice. It almost
sounded like a dinner bell when I was growing up in Hale County. I did
take time to have a very vigorous ballgame with her, but it was at
midnight last night. That little girl actually got tired and called
the game after about the third inning. I was so happy. Life goes on.
Molly keeps it very, very interesting. J. B. Elliott

..Moisture Returning...

Summertime is a time of subtle weather features across the Deep
South. An upper level disturbance moving out of Oklahoma and Arkansas
triggered a complex of thunderstorms that moved into western Tennessee
overnight, where it promptly petered out. But it got re-energized
during the morning as it moved into Northwest Alabama. It also laid
down an outflow boundary across Northwest Alabama. This provided a
focus for storms to fire with the intense morning heating. In
addition, a high canopy of cirrus clouds from the thunderstorm complex
provided a temperature differential that helped to get the storms
firing. I checked the radar before heading to lunch at 11:45, and the
only thing on the radar was the storms over Northwest Alabama. By the
time I sat down to eat at 12:15, Walker and Winston Counties were
engulfed in storms.

NOT MUCH CHANGE TODAY: Today promises to look a lot like yesterday.
Another storm complex to the northwest of us will likely lay down
another outflow boundary The sun will do its work on the moist
airmass, and voila, more storms again today. The storms will pack
quite a punch, with wind and heavy rain and lightning. It's not out
of the question that some of them could become severe, particularly if
a big complex forms and we get a bow echo.

NOT MUCH CHANGE AHEAD: We continue in this same basic pattern for
the next few days, as the ridge of high pressure in the upper
atmosphere remains a little weak and the westerlies try to nibble
their way down into the Deep South. A long, snaky front will mark the
southern boundary of the westerlies, remaining to the north of
Alabama. Disturbances like the one yesterday and another one today
will trigger complexes of storms. Storms could be on the strong to
severe side again on Friday. In fact, t he Storm Prediction Center
thought enough of the possibility to go ahead and outlook the northern
third of the state for the potential for Friday severe weather on
their Day 3 outlook yesterday. That's pretty confident for that far
out, especially given the subtle features.

NOT MUCH CHANGE FOR THE WEEKEND: This same basic pattern, or lack
thereof, will continue into the weekend with the chance of showers and
storms continuing each day. The subtropical ridge will take over next
week, reducing our storm chances.

TROPICS: The tropics are quiet at this time. Eight years ago, the
first named storm of the season was wreaking havoc on a 12 day rampage
from the Houston area eastward along the Gulf Coast to the Mid-
Atlantic states.

ON THIS DATE IN 1993: The first federal Disaster Declaration is
issued for parts of Minnesota hard ht by the beginning stages of the
Great Midwest Flood of 1993. By August, parts of nine states are
declared disaster areas. The entire state of Iowa was declared a
disaster area. The flood was the worst this century in the U.S.,
lasting for months, rather than the usual weeks for floods. Damage
totaled almost $20 billion. More than 50,000 homes were damaged or
destroyed. More than 75 small towns were completely flooded.

...Scattered Thunderstorms..

THE ALABAMA STORY: This time of year we have to look in all
directions to keep an eye on the weather.
Typically, showers and thunderstorms that form over Alabama in summer
will be moving from the SW to NE, but not always. The last several
days, violent thunderstorms have occurred in the midsection of the
nation all the way from New Mexico to North Carolina and Maryland.
Sometimes these thunderstorms form in groups and angle toward the SE.
That happened overnight.

A cluster of strong thunderstorms over West Tennessee early this
morning moved into North Alabama this afternoon. These storms were
loaded with lightning and produced some very heavy rain. There were
several lightning strikes in the NW part of the state with at least
one home set afire. This afternoon those stronger storms were moving
across mainly NE and North/Central Alabama.

IN OUR FUTURE: We will still have a chance of a few thunderstorms
Thursday. We believe there will be an increase in the number of
showers and storms on Friday. The Storm Prediction Center has
indicated a Slight Risk area from about Birmingham northward on
Friday. The storms should thin out in number over the weekend and high
temperatures will back off into the upper 80s.

LIGHTNING IS FRIGHTENING: How about that report yesterday morning
indicating over 11,000 lightning strikes in just one hour in
Philadelphia and surrounding areas. That is very, very scary. I know I
have repeated this a zillion times, but I am more afraid of lightning
than a charging rhino, a big elephant chasing me, an alligator
grabbing my leg—you name it. Strangely enough, that fear does not
translate to high winds, hurricanes and tornadoes.

SHIVERING PENQUINS: The temperature at Vostok in Antarctica was 99
below zero earlier today and expected to drop on down to 113 below
Friday night with a wind chill as low as 139 below. That means I would
have to wear a coat.

GLOBAL ROAMING: 102 in Death Valley and Altus, Oklahoma was the
hottest in the country yesterday. Coldest this morning 29 at Spincich
Lake, Michigan and 30 at Barter Island, Alaska. How about that 80 at
Eagle, Alaska yesterday?

AT THE BEACH: Very nice weather through most of the weekend with lots
of sunshine and high temperatures between 88 and 92. The Tropics are
quiet. Sea surface temperatures are now warm enough to where you will
not shiver too much if you fall in the Gulf of Mexico.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure would like to know the private
thoughts of my Little Miss Molly—specifically, what does she think of
me. I tend to be a light-hearted silly person all the time and
especially around Little Miss Molly. She sure does seem to like that.
I can tell by the thousands of tail wags and those big eyes. One day I
am going to try and estimate how many miles she and I have walked
together. It will be astounding. She loves to take her time. Yesterday
she made me pause at five houses where she knows her friends live. She
cried a little at each stop hoping to get a belly rub from the
neighbors. Life goes on.

...Edging Closer to Summer...

IN THE GOOD 'OL SUMMERTIME: Astronomically speaking, summer
doesn't officially begin until the early morning hours of June 21st
this year. But meteorologically speaking, we count June 1st as our
beginning of summer. We base that on their general climate trends,
which more closely match a June 1st transition. As we go deeper into
summer, weather patterns over the southern United States become more
diffuse, dominated by a semi-permanent high pressure system called the
Bermuda High. We get a persistent south-easterly wind flow that keeps
us warm and moist. The westerlies lift well to the north, taking the
storm track with it. We settle into a pattern of hot, hazy and humid
conditions that will continue until September.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: We find a weak upper ridge of high pressure
over the northern Gulf states this morning, holding those westerlies
just to our north. At the southern edge of those westerlies, we find
a stationary front separating the relatively cool air to the north
from the warm, humid air to the south. The ridge will hold strong
today, but will weaken a bit as me move toward the end of the week.
This will allow the westerlies and the front to sag to the south a bit.

YOUR FORECAST: All this means that only isolated showers and storms
will be able to develop today across Central Alabama. Rain chances
will be one 1 in 5. There is a slightly better chance across the
Tennessee Valley, around 1 in 3. Thursday, it looks like a passing
disturbance will give a better chance of storms to North Alabama,
about 40-50%. Our rain chances stay at about 20%. On Friday, the
front will sag a little further south as a disturbance slips by, and
it looks like there will be a pretty good chance of rain over the
Tennessee Valley. In Central Alabama, rain chances will go up a bit,
to around 30-40%. More disturbances on Saturday and Sunday will keep
rain and storms in the forecast into the weekend, with our rain
chances about 30-40% each day.

TROPICS: The southwestern Caribbean and t he Gulf of Mexico are
favored spots for early season tropical cyclone development. We have
been monitoring convection to the east of Nicaragua for the past
couple of days, but it seems that the threat of a tropical low forming
in this area has diminished. No tropical cyclone formation is
expected this week, but we will continue to monitor the situation.

ON THIS DATE IN 1929: The first radiosonde was sent up by French
meteorologists. A radiosonde is a balloon that is released from a
ground station. It rises to a height of about 80,000 feet,
transmitting atmospheric conditions by radio back to the ground
station. Every upper air station releases its balloon at midnight and
noon Greenwich Mean Time so that meteorologists can have a
comprehensive snapshot of upper air conditions around the globe. The
balloon measures about five feet in diameter and is filled with
hydrogen. A cable that is about 100 feet long trails below the
balloon. The cable is so long because air movement around the balloon
cannot affect the readings. At the end of this cable is an instrument
package that contains a thermometer, hygrometer and barometer. As the
balloon ascends, it gradually expands and bursts at a height of about
80,000 feet. The package has a parachute to help it float back to
ground where instructions direct the finder to return it to the
Weather Service.

...The Alabama Story...

JUNE BREAKING OUT ALL OVER: It is that time of year when we can
expect our almost daily dose of warm to hot afternoon temperatures and
some risk of an afternoon thunderstorm. The latter is the huge
variation in the mix. Each day can vary from virtually no storms to a
good round of storms. For the next five days, all the way through the
weekend, we think there will be some around each day. They will be
rather scarce Wednesday and Thursday, but a better chance on Friday.

The reason for that better chance on Friday is another cool front
wanting to come down south. The only thing is he is going to run out
of gas in Central Alabama and completely stall. The front will head
back north as a warm front by early Monday.
Bottom line: do not look for a great break in the afternoon heat,
except that on Friday, Saturday and Sunday the hot temperatures will
back off into the mid and upper 80s.

AT THE BEACH: This is a good time to go, because there will be lots
of sunshine along the Alabama/NW Florida coast all the way through the
weekend. There may be a few thunderstorms Sunday, but most of the time
it will be dry. High temperatures will be between 90 and 92. The sea
surface temperature has warmed enough to where you will not shiver if
you hit the water.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The Big Pond (the Atlantic) as well as the
Caribbean and Mexico is as peaceful as can be. The NHC never
guarantees anything beyond 48 hours, but it sure looks like it will be
quiet much longer than that. We are still awaiting our first named
storm, which will be Ana, and a second one we will name after Bill
Murray. James is awaiting Fred—his favorite.

THE BIG MARS HOAX: NASA Science News reported today that once again a
false report is circulating around the Internet that Mars will look as
big as a full moon on August 27. That hoax circulates almost every
year. The hoax instructs people to go outside after dark on August 27
and behold the sky. NASA says what you will really find if you go
outside is nothing. Mars will not even be there. The last Mars Rover
detected some snowflakes falling through a cloud cover on Mars. I may
have started a rumor when I wondered if everybody would go rushing to
the supermarket and buy all the milk and bread and Mars bars.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Some meteorologists are saying that the Central
Plains and Midwest will not have a summer this year. A big red flag of
doubt as far as I am concerned. However, they really have had a stormy
time this spring and early summer. Huge hail was reported again
yesterday in Kansas. One of our daily readers at Good Hope forwarded
us a story and pictures. The man in Kansas said that the big stones
knocked big holes in the roof of his barn. Coldest in the USA this
morning was 26 at Stanley, Idaho and 31 at Barter Island, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: This is the quietest 24 hours that
Little Miss Molly has had in several days. She is a smart little dog
and she appropriately decided to store up some extra sleep while
things were quiet. She has developed this little habit of waking up if
I walk through the living area to get my eighth cup of coffee and she
petitions for an extra treat. She knows she is not supposed to get one
except when we are away and come back home. She breaks the rules and I
cannot say no. life goes on.

IN TUNE WITH JUNE: When June gets here every year, Alabama weather
tends to get set in its ways. The main severe weather season is
usually over by that time and we drift into a pattern of daily weather
forecasts that you could almost post for every day of the month. The
main variation is the number of showers and thunderstorms.
Temperatures meanwhile will slowly edge upward. The average high
temperature at this time in June is around 86. The average will slowly
climb to 90 on the last day of June and the first two weeks of July.

If every summer behaved according to average, our hottest days would
be from July 15 until August 15. During that one month, the average
high is 91. Of course, there are huge variations from year to year.
The first time we have ever had 100 was on June 5, 1985, but after you
get to late June the record high for almost every day is over 100.

BACK TO THE PRESENT: We sure do not expect any 100-degree weather
anytime soon, but our afternoons are heating up. For Central Alabama,
we are looking for highs between 90 and 92 for the next three days,
maybe dropping back to about 88 on Friday because of a slightly better
chance of showers and storms at that time. We cannot totally rule out
a rogue shower or storm on Wednesday, but we did not mention it in the
forecast. We will see some widely scattered showers and thunderstorms
mainly during the afternoon on Thursday and about a 1 in 3 chance on
Friday.

Another weak front makes an effort to reach Alabama on Friday, but it
should stall and head back north by Saturday and Sunday. You will
hardly notice it, except that high temperatures during the weekend
will back off a few degrees to the mid 80s.

AT THE BEACH: The sea surface temperatures along the Alabama Gulf
Coast are rising and are now averaging around 81 degrees. This is a
good time to go there. We expect quite a bit of sunshine and dry
weather through Thursday with highs 90 to 92. A few showers and storms
on Friday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: There are no tropical disturbances at this time in
the Atlantic Basin, which encompasses the Atlantic, the Caribbean and
our dear friend, the Gulf of Mexico. Our first two names storms even I
can pronounce—Ana and Bill.

GLOBAL ROAMING: As many as 5 tornadoes in East Colorado in the last
24 hours—most of them near Denver. We heard one report of grapefruit-
size hail somewhere in the Central U.S., but cannot track it down. How
would you like to be atop Pikes Peak in the Colorado Rockies where
temperatures will drop to as low as 21 the next several nights with
high winds, snow along with thunderstorms? Yellowstone National Park
expected to pick up an additional 3 inches overnight. It reached 70 in
Whittier, Alaska yesterday, so surely their last 2 inches of snow is
gone, which ends our guessing game.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We have often mentioned the CC
(Community Cat), the CR (Community Rabbit) and now we must add the CS
(Community Squirrel). The majority owner took Miss Molly out at
daybreak. There is a wooden fence surrounding our community with big
posts every so often. That squirrel was running along the top of the
fence and then leaping over the posts. You can imagine Little Miss
Molly! I sure would like to know a record of her pulse rate. I imagine
the chart would look like an ocean wave. Life goes on.

For two weeks in a row, we have had nice weekend weather. After a
seemingly endless string of bad weather Saturday and Sundays, it has
been a welcome respite. Fairly typical early June weather is in store
this week.
THE WEEK AHEAD: A weak ridge of high pressure will remain in control
of our weather for the most part. The airmass over the state has grown
increasingly moist over the past couple of days, but things should
remain dry today and likely tomorrow also. A weak front will try to
drift into North Alabama tomorrow, perhaps setting off a few isolated
showers and storms. With the moist airmass and weak boundary nearby,
isolated showers and storms will pop up each afternoon through the end
of the week. The chance of rain any single day will be about one in
five.

THE WEEKEND: Not much change is expected as we head into the weekend.
Partly cloudy, warm and muggy conditions will continue, with highs in
the upper 80s and lows right around 70.

VOODOOLAND: It looks like fairly typical June fare in the weather
department as we head toward the official start to summer on June
21st. More warm and humid conditions, with isolated to widely
scattered afternoon and evening storms.

TOO MANY WARNINGS? We recorded an excellent WeatherBrains episode last
night with Jim Stefkovich, Meteorologist in Charge of the National
Weather Service Birmingham. Everyone engaged in a spirited and lively
debate about the warning process. Some people believe that there are
too many tornado warnings. The goal of course is to reduce the false
alarm rate, while covering as many tornadoes as possible with a
warning. My personal opinion is that the NWS has a responsibility to
warn for as many tornadoes as possible...and each individual has to
take personality responsibility for receiving the warnings and acting
on them. The Birmingham NWS Forecast Office does a great job with
their role, providing excellent lead times and probabilities of
detection. We are lucky to have such a great team at our local Weather
Service office. You can subscribe to the weekly netcast that's all
about weather on iTunes, or listen at WeatherBrains.com.

ON THIS DATE IN 1966: Legend said that Burnett's Mound would always
protect the city of Topeka, Kansas from tornadoes . The mound was
supposedly to deflect any tornadoes that might approach the city. On
this date in 1966, that legend was debunked when an F5 tornado
destroyed a large part of the city. Entire neighborhoods were
destroyed, including 820 homes. Sixteen people were killed. It was the
first tornado in United States history to produce $100 million in
damage. Television station WIBW covered the tornado live, dispatching
crews to the southwest of town when a tornado warning was issued.
Newscaster Bill Kurtis would be lauded for sounding the alarm with
urgent warnings as the tornado cut a path across the city. The death
toll would certainly have been higher without the station's coverage.

...Air Quality Alert Today...

A Code Orange Air Quality alert is in effect for today across Central
Alabama's Jefferson and Shelby Counties. High pressure and warm
temperatures will lead to a high accumulation of the pollutant ozone
today and quite likely again on Monday.

ICE CREAM WEATHER: Did you know that chocolate is America's
favorite flavor of ice cream? Well, today is the official day to
celebrate it! June 7th is National Chocolate Ice Cream Day. And the
weather will be right for it, with lots of hazy sunshine and warm
temperatures. Highs today will top out in the 90 degree range today
across the area.

DRY THROUGH TUESDAY: Moisture will be slowly increasing over the
next few days, but I think we will remain mostly dry through Tuesday
as a ridge of high pressure remains in control of our weather. Highs
will be in the upper 80s for the most part. Lows will be on the muggy
side, getting a little closer to 70 each night as we go through the
week ahead.

SCATTERED SHOWERS: By midweek and beyond, we will see the return of
the typical summertime afternoon and evening showers and storms as the
ridge weakens just a tad and the westerlies sag a little southward
into the Ohio Valley region.

WEEKEND SNEAK PEEK: It looks like more of the same as we head into
next weekend, with partly cloudy skies and widely scattered daily
afternoon and evening showers and storms.

CRYSTAL BALL WEATHER: The fairly typical summertime pattern looks
like it will continue as we head into the week of the15th, although
the slug of tropical moisture over Florida might eventually try to
work in here from there east.

MIDWEST MODERATE RISK TODAY: The SPC has outlooked areas from
southeastern Nebraska and southwestern Iowa through northwestern
Missouri and northeastern Kansas for a moderate risk of severe weather
today. A moist, increasingly warm and capped air mass over this
region today will be prime for severe weather by late afternoon as
increasing wind shear and a strong mid level wind max set the stage
for supercells and tornadoes followed by a big bow echo that moves east.

TROPICAL ATLANTIC QUIET: Shower activity associated with a low over
the southwestern Caribbean diminished this morning. But this is the
area of interest over the next week or so as the models continue to
hint at nervousness and generally low pressures here. There is a
chance that we will see a tropical low develop here during the next
week and track northeast or north toward western Cuba. The GFS and
Europeans models both offer this general solution. The system could
bring heavy rains to Florida. Their drought conditions have relaxed,
but I am sure they could use a little more rain.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: The forecast for tonight: Sunny and warm.
That's right. At least in Barrow, Alaska, on the Arctic Ocean when
the late spring and early summer brings all night sunshine. On this
date in 1998, the high temperature rose to a record 51 degrees with a
gusty land breeze.

...Warm Sunday...

It was a beautiful June Saturday across Alabama yesterday. Skies were
generally mostly sunny to partly cloudy across the state. A low
pressure system over southeastern Georgia pumped some deeper moisture
into eastern sections of the state, giving places like Alexander City
and Auburn mostly cloudy skies for part of the day. Temperatures rose
in the middle and upper 80s across much of the area. Overnight lows
were mainly in the 60s.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Today will look a lot like Saturday, with a nice
amount of fair weather cumulus clouds. The low over Georgia has
weakened and the moisture has pulled a bit more to the east.
Consequently, it should be dry again today. Highs will be a couple of
degrees warmer, approaching 90 degrees in many spots.

THE WEEK AHEAD: By Monday, high pressure in the mid levels of the
atmosphere will be stationed over the western Gulf of Mexico. At the
surface, high pressure will be over the northern Gulf. This should
keep Alabama high and dry through then. A bit of a flat upper level
ridge of high pressure will remain over the southern U.S. as we head
into Tuesday, but a broad upper trough will be over the Great Lakes
states. Disturbances rippling along in the flow to the north will try
to push a frontal boundary to the south. Meanwhile, moisture levels
will be rising over Alabama. We could see a few widely scattered
showers and storms on Tuesday with the front in proximity and daytime
heating. The frontal boundary will set up shop to our north by
Wednesday and stay there into the weekend. This means a chance of
showers and storms through Saturday, with the best chances over the
Tennessee Valley.

TROPICAL TROUBLE? The southwestern Caribbean will be active over the
next seven days with lots of shower activity. A weak low pressure
system formed over that region yesterday. Eventually, we think that a
tropical low will form here in the week ahead. The prevailing opinion
has been that it will travel northeastward in the general direction of
Cuba and the Bahamas, but the GFS has been consistently trying to push
it more northward into the southern Gulf of Mexico. First storm: Ana.

HURRICANE SEASON FORECAST UPDATED: Indications are that an El Nino
pattern will develop over the Pacific over the coming month, which
encompass hurricane season. This tends to suppress North Atlantic
hurricane activity. Dr. William Gray's group out at Colorado State
have downgraded their seasonal forecast for the 2009 Atlantic
Hurricane Season. They are now calling for 11 named storms, 5
hurricanes and two major hurricanes. The long term average has been
10,6 and 2 respectively, but since 1995, we have averaged 15, 9 and 4.

ON THIS DATE IN 1692: Just before noon, a massive earthquake and
tsunami destroyed the town of Port Royal, Jamaica. Much of the 60 acre
island was consumed by the sea forever, leaving only 25 acres when the
disaster was over. Five thousand of the seven thousand people living
there died. Many believed it was God's wrath on a sinful city. Some
called it the Sodom of the Indies." The island became a Royal Navy
base for many years.
