ALABAMA ONE CALL
KNOW WHAT'S BELOW
CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG

Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional excavator,
smart digging means calling 811 before each job to find out where
it's safe to dig.

Every digging project requires a call to Alabama One Call--even
small projects like building a fence, planting shrubs and trees or
installing a mailbox.

One free easy call to 811 or 205-252-4444 at least 48 hours
prior to digging:

* Gets utility owned lines marked for free!
* Complies with Alabama Act 94-487.
* Helps prevent undesired consequences and possible service
disruptions to your neighborhood.

...Scattered Thunderstorms..

THE ALABAMA STORY: This time of year we have to look in all
directions to keep an eye on the weather.
Typically, showers and thunderstorms that form over Alabama in summer
will be moving from the SW to NE, but not always. The last several
days, violent thunderstorms have occurred in the midsection of the
nation all the way from New Mexico to North Carolina and Maryland.
Sometimes these thunderstorms form in groups and angle toward the SE.
That happened overnight.

A cluster of strong thunderstorms over West Tennessee early this
morning moved into North Alabama this afternoon. These storms were
loaded with lightning and produced some very heavy rain. There were
several lightning strikes in the NW part of the state with at least
one home set afire. This afternoon those stronger storms were moving
across mainly NE and North/Central Alabama.

IN OUR FUTURE: We will still have a chance of a few thunderstorms
Thursday. We believe there will be an increase in the number of
showers and storms on Friday. The Storm Prediction Center has
indicated a Slight Risk area from about Birmingham northward on
Friday. The storms should thin out in number over the weekend and high
temperatures will back off into the upper 80s.

LIGHTNING IS FRIGHTENING: How about that report yesterday morning
indicating over 11,000 lightning strikes in just one hour in
Philadelphia and surrounding areas. That is very, very scary. I know I
have repeated this a zillion times, but I am more afraid of lightning
than a charging rhino, a big elephant chasing me, an alligator
grabbing my leg—you name it. Strangely enough, that fear does not
translate to high winds, hurricanes and tornadoes.

SHIVERING PENQUINS: The temperature at Vostok in Antarctica was 99
below zero earlier today and expected to drop on down to 113 below
Friday night with a wind chill as low as 139 below. That means I would
have to wear a coat.

GLOBAL ROAMING: 102 in Death Valley and Altus, Oklahoma was the
hottest in the country yesterday. Coldest this morning 29 at Spincich
Lake, Michigan and 30 at Barter Island, Alaska. How about that 80 at
Eagle, Alaska yesterday?

AT THE BEACH: Very nice weather through most of the weekend with lots
of sunshine and high temperatures between 88 and 92. The Tropics are
quiet. Sea surface temperatures are now warm enough to where you will
not shiver too much if you fall in the Gulf of Mexico.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure would like to know the private
thoughts of my Little Miss Molly—specifically, what does she think of
me. I tend to be a light-hearted silly person all the time and
especially around Little Miss Molly. She sure does seem to like that.
I can tell by the thousands of tail wags and those big eyes. One day I
am going to try and estimate how many miles she and I have walked
together. It will be astounding. She loves to take her time. Yesterday
she made me pause at five houses where she knows her friends live. She
cried a little at each stop hoping to get a belly rub from the
neighbors. Life goes on.
