...The Alabama Story...

IN TUNE WITH JUNE: When June gets here every year, Alabama weather
tends to get set in its ways. The main severe weather season is
usually over by that time and we drift into a pattern of daily weather
forecasts that you could almost post for every day of the month. The
main variation is the number of showers and thunderstorms.
Temperatures meanwhile will slowly edge upward. The average high
temperature at this time in June is around 86. The average will slowly
climb to 90 on the last day of June and the first two weeks of July.
If every summer behaved according to average, our hottest days would
be from July 15 until August 15. During that one month, the average
high is 91.

Of course, there are huge variations from year to year. The first time
we have ever had 100 was on June 5, 1985, but after you get to late
June the record high for almost every day is over 100.

BACK TO THE PRESENT: We sure do not expect any 100-degree weather
anytime soon, but our afternoons are heating up. For Central Alabama,
we are looking for highs between 90 and 92 for the next three days,
maybe dropping back to about 88 on Friday because of a slightly better
chance of showers and storms at that time. We cannot totally rule out
a rogue shower or storm on Wednesday, but we did not mention it in the
forecast. We will see some widely scattered showers and thunderstorms
mainly during the afternoon on Thursday and about a 1 in 3 chance on
Friday.

Another weak front makes an effort to reach Alabama on Friday, but it
should stall and head back north by Saturday and Sunday. You will
hardly notice it, except that high temperatures during the weekend
will back off a few degrees to the mid 80s.

AT THE BEACH: The sea surface temperatures along the Alabama Gulf
Coast are rising and are now averaging around 81 degrees. This is a
good time to go there. We expect quite a bit of sunshine and dry
weather through Thursday with highs 90 to 92. A few showers and storms
on Friday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: There are no tropical disturbances at this time in
the Atlantic Basin, which encompasses the Atlantic, the Caribbean and
our dear friend, the Gulf of Mexico. Our first two names storms even I
can pronounce—Ana and Bill.

GLOBAL ROAMING: As many as 5 tornadoes in East Colorado in the last
24 hours—most of them near Denver. We heard one report of grapefruit-
size hail somewhere in the Central U.S., but cannot track it down. How
would you like to be atop Pikes Peak in the Colorado Rockies where
temperatures will drop to as low as 21 the next several nights with
high winds, snow along with thunderstorms? Yellowstone National Park
expected to pick up an additional 3 inches overnight. It reached 70 in
Whittier, Alaska yesterday, so surely their last 2 inches of snow is
gone, which ends our guessing game.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We have often mentioned the CC
(Community Cat), the CR (Community Rabbit) and now we must add the CS
(Community Squirrel). The majority owner took Miss Molly out at
daybreak. There is a wooden fence surrounding our community with big
posts every so often. That squirrel was running along the top of the
fence and then leaping over the posts. You can imagine Little Miss
Molly! I sure would like to know a record of her pulse rate. I imagine
the chart would look like an ocean wave. Life goes on.
