===================================================================

.Upper 80s in Central Alabama is late April. Near record warmth.
Temperatures running some 10 to 15 degrees above normal. Readings
more like late June than late April. It's great weather for this
weekend's big events, including the races at Talladega.

FOR YOUR WEEKEND: Some high clouds from a passing disturbance to our
west will serve to give the sky a little character at times this
afternoon, mainly over southern and western sections. Temperatures
will rise into the upper 80s this afternoon. Tonight, as the
disturbance swings by to the northwest and the air aloft diverges just
a bit, a few showers could form overnight, but they will be light.
Skies should be sunny again by morning, with partly cloudy and dry
conditions on tap for Sunday. Highs tomorrow will be in the middle 80s.

RAINFALL SURPLUS DWINDLING: Most of Birminghams rainfall for
this month came on the 12th. Since then it has been very dry, with
only 0.49 inches falling in the following two weeks. This has eaten
significantly into our meagre surplus. It is now down to 0.76 inches
at the Birmingham Airport. How are other Alabama cities faring?
Montgomery is down 1.85 inches. Huntsville has a shortfall of 2.52
inches. Anniston is down 1.60 inches. Tuscaloosa is just under three
quarters of an inch short. So, we could use some rain. What are the
prospects?

LOOKING AHEAD: The subtropical high off of the coast of the Carolinas
will build southwestward, and keep the encroaching upper trough at bay
through Monday. Little disturbances rippling through the trough will
allow it to edge southeastward and the battle zone between t he
systems will edge our way. This will mean increasing clouds on
Tuesday, along with a chance of showers by afternoon. Those rain
chances will increase during the overnight. If the boundary slowly
sinks into North Alabama on Wednesday, that could allow for periods of
rain through Thursday. The best rain chances look like they might
occur over the Tennessee Valley, but hopefully some would be
experienced over central parts of the state as well. The boundary
should retreat northward by Friday as a warm front, setting the stage
for a warm and dry weekend. Showers could return Sunday night, with a
big storm system due in here May 6th. We will have to keep a close
eye on that one.

TORNADO OUTBREAK TODAY: Storm chasers are positioning themselves
across the Plains today in anticipation of a significant severe
weather outbreak. They are poring over data in places like Elk City,
Oklahoma, and Canadian, Texas and Shamrock, Texas, A strong upper
trough, upper level wind max, ample low level moisture and a dryline
are expected to result in a classic severe weather setup for areas
from the Texas Panhandle into western Oklahoma and southwestern
Kansas. There could be some large tornadoes, especially after dark.
The Oklahoma City metro area could be under the gun this evening.

ON THIS DATE IN 1880: A violent tornado, at times up to 400 yards
wide, swept away at least twenty homes in Macon, Mississippi. Pieces
of some of the homes were found 15 miles from their origin and 22
died, while 72 people were injured. Loaded freight cars were thrown
100 yards into homes. A bolt of cloth was carried for 8 miles.

ON THIS DATE IN 1986: A major disaster occurred at the Chernobyl
nuclear power plant in the Ukraine as flawed Soviet reactor designed
combined with serious mistakes in judgment by the plant operators.
The result was an explosion and fire that resulted in a release of
about 5 percent of the reactor core. Most of the release was composed
of dust and debris near the site. Lighter materials were carried by
the wind over parts of the Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and even to parts
of Scandinavia and Europe. Thirty people died as a result of the
accident, and extreme increases in thyroid cancers have been observed
downwind of the site. If the wind had been westerly, the release
would have targeted the city of Kiev, which undoubtedly would have
resulted in many more fatalities. Chernobyl is the only case where
radiation related deaths have occurred as the result of an accident at
a commercial nuclear power site.

...Busy Weekend...

BUSY WEEKEND: The Magic City Art Connection will transform
downtown's Linn Park into a blend of incredible artistic talent, as
well as great food, live music and entertainment. The event runs
from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. today and Sunday. If you haven't been to
this event before, you definitely have to check it out. In addition,
tens of thousands of race fans are descending on Talladega for the
spring edition of the semi-annual racing epic. The weather for both
events will be absolutely perfect. Let's look at the forecast.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: If we go up to about 18,000 feet in the
atmosphere, we find a weak ridge of high pressure. This ridge will
remain in basic control of our weather through much of the week
ahead. A strong upper trough is rotating through California. This
trough will weaken as it rotates northeast over the next day or so,
but a broad general trough will remain over the West. At the surface,
a powerful anticyclone will maintain itself over the Atlantic east of
North Carolina. Moisture will flow into the Mississippi Valley in the
clockwise flow around the anticyclone. A battle zone will set up
between the trough to the west and the ridge to the east.

THE WEEKEND: Sunny days and clear nights will prevail through the
weekend across Central Alabama. It will be warm, with highs in the 80s.
Lows will range between 58-62.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The ridge will continue to try to deflect rain to
the north of Alabama. But there are signs that the battle zone could
drift southward enough to produce showers across Central Alabama as
early as Tuesday. But it looks like a better chance would occur on
Wednesday as the boundary tries to settle into the northern half of
the state. Temperatures will continue to be warm, with highs in the
80s. Lows will be in the 60s. The boundary will lift back to the
north on Thursday as a surface high noses into the eastern Gulf of
Mexico. This should set the stage for a warm and dry weekend.

VOODOOLAND: I have to be honest with you. The intensity of the
subtropical high concerns me. It this anticyclone continues to remain
strong over the next several weeks, we could be in for a long hot and
dry summer. It is too early to tell what the specific effect will be,
but let's hope that a drought does not return to the state.

ON THIS DATE IN 1986: A major disaster occurred at the Chernobyl
nuclear power plant in the Ukraine as flawed Soviet reactor designed
combined with serious mistakes in judgment by the plant operators.
The result was an explosion and fire that resulted in a release of

...Very Warm For So Early...

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A WEEK MAKES: Brisk and very warm south winds were
fanning Alabama this afternoon sending temperatures well into the 80s.
These temperatures are 10-12 degrees warmer than average for late
April. It was only three or four mornings ago that we had a little bit
of scattered light frost in the NE Alabama valleys. This weekend will
be 180-degrees different from last weekend when we had all those
tornadoes. It is the season for quick changes. There is a lot of
difference in the warmth of today as compared to the same temperatures
in mid-summer. The dew point this afternoon is in the 40s and 50s.
Translation: much lower humidity than we would experience for the same
temperatures in mid-summer.

RACE WEEKEND: Still looks great for the big race weekend at Talladega
Super Speedway. Look for highs near 88 Saturday and in the mid 80s
Sunday. While it will be a little more humid, it does not compare to
mid-summer. Also, a nice southerly breeze of 10-15 mph in Talladega
County will help.

OUR NEXT RAIN: It looks like mostly sunshine through Monday and most
of Tuesday, but clouds will increase Tuesday night and we should have
some scattered showers on Wednesday. Some of those could start late
Tuesday night.

SOUTH CAROLINA WILDFIRES: It is a tragic story, especially in the
general vicinity of Myrtle Beach. Reports today indicate the worst
wildfires in over 30 years and the wildfire at times was 40 miles
wide. At least 70 homes have been totally burned and 100 others
damaged. Thousands of people have had to flee.

MISCELLANEOUS: I rode with Bill Murray and Tim Coleman to downtown
Birmingham last night for a meeting of the Central Alabama National
Weather Association. Tim did another presentation on gravity waves and
it is going to take me quite a bit of time to fully understand those.
They have always been around, except in the early days we did not know
what to call them. Sure enjoyed seeing a number of people from the
NWS. I am still a big National Weather Service fan having worked in
the Birmingham office for 32 years. The lower 48 snow cover is down to
only 7% this morning as compared to 22% a month ago. Not counting the
Mountain West, the only consistent snow cover was over NE Minnesota,
Upper Michigan and in Northern Maine. 105 was the hot spot in the USA
yesterday. Coldest this morning was 5 at Cutbank, Montana and that was
several degrees colder than the lowest in Alaska. Checking Whittier,
Alaska again: their snow depth is now down to 76 inches.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I stepped out the door barely at the
crack of dawn this morning to get my newspapers. Every single morning
a bird starts singing in a nearby tree when he sees me and always the
same song. (He does not sing my favorite, Tumbling Tumbleweeds.) Out
back I was shocked to see two very young rabbits playfully chasing
each other in our backyard. They finally zoomed up the walking track.
I am glad Little Miss Molly was still asleep. That would almost be a
cardiac arrest for her. Not only does she not like rabbits and cats,
she does not like any creature invading her territory. Life goes on.

...Summer-Like Weather Continues...

JUNE OR APRIL? Birmingham's official high yesterday was 88 degrees; 12
degrees above the average high of 76, and within 2 degrees of the
record high of 90 for April 23 (set way back in 1896). It is
interesting note the average high in Birmingham is 88 degrees from
June 15 through June 20, so no wonder summer is on our mind.

If you enjoyed the warmth yesterday, you should love the forecast in
coming days. Our weather today, tomorrow, and Sunday will feature
sunny warm days and clear nights. Afternoon highs will remain mostly
in the mid 80s, with early morning lows close to 60. Needless to say,
the weather will be excellent for all of the activities at the
Talladega Superspeedway through Sunday. Be sure and bring the
sunscreen; you will need it.

NEXT WEEK: Our weather will remain warm and dry on Monday and Tuesday,
but a surface front will drift down this way and bring a chance of
showers during the latter half of the week; a shower is possible as
early as Wednesday afternoon. The primary dynamics will remain well to
the north of Alabama, so at this time we are not expecting any severe
weather problems.

A WARM APRIL DAY: High temperatures yesterday around Alabama included
90 at Dothan, 89 at Pinson, and 88 at Birmingham, Tuscaloosa,
Montgomery, and Muscle Shoals. To the west, the high was 90 at Little
Rock and Tulsa, 94 at Wichita Falls, Texas, and 91 at Sioux Falls,
South Dakota. Hottest place in the nation was Death Valley, CA with 105.

ON THIS DATE IN 1908: At least 34 tornadoes touched down generally
east of the Mississippi River These tornadoes occurred from Texas to
Georgia, then northward from Oklahoma to Tennessee. The violent storms
killed at least 320 people and injured over a thousand citizens. One
of the hardest hit communties was Purvis, Mississippi, where the town
was completely leveled and 55 citizens lost their lives. At least four
tornadoes touched down in Alabama during this outbreak of severe
weather. These tornadoes were responsible for approximately 48
fatalities and at least 260 injuries. The Walker to Dekalb County
Tornado was estimated to be an F4
, using the current Fujita Damage Intensity Scale.

This devastating F4 tornado touched down near Dora around 240 pm, then
continued northeastward until it dissipated near Sylvania around 410
pm.Twelve people were killed between Dora and Bergens. Bergens was
completely obliterated. Two people were killed in Warrior, one near
Royal (Blount County) and two in Wynnville (Blount County). Fifteen
people were killed and at least 150 were injured in Albertville as
half the town was destroyed. A nine ton oil tank was reportedly
carried around one half of a mile near Albertville. A funnel-shaped
cloud swept along the entire path of the storm. The cloud was reported
to have had a bounding and whirling motion, and to have swept
everything from its path where it touched the ground.

...Extended Warm Period...

EXCELLENT RACE WEATHER: The main sporting event in Alabama over the
weekend is the big race at the Talladega Super Speedway. It looks like
good weather for the entire event. It may feel a bit warm as
temperatures top out in the mid 80s, because it will be mostly
sunshine. There will be enough breeze to offset that. On each day the
wind will be from the SW at 10-15 mph.

QUESTION ABOUT TONIGHT: Last night a group of thunderstorms cut loose
before daybreak over NE Alabama and moved down across the Anniston
area and into Central Georgia. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was
issued for one county in Central Georgia. This afternoon we see
another group of storms taking shape over Middle Tennessee and some
lighter showers over North Alabama. These will move toward the ESE.
Bottom line: there could be a shower or even a thunderstorm over parts
of NE and East/Central Alabama through the early evening. After that,
clear sailing.

Just a couple of mornings ago, we had a touch of light frost in some
of the NE Alabama valleys. Now we are expecting mid 80s every day well
into next week and lows at night close to 60. It is the season for
changeable weather in Alabama. Friday could be our warmest day. We are
calling for 86 across Central Alabama. Some places over on the west
side of the state could reach the upper 80s.

NEXT RAIN EVENT: Looks like it may be the middle of next week before
we have hardly any chance at all. May be some late Tuesday, but the
best chance of some scattered showers and storms should be about next
Wednesday. So far this month, Huntsville has received 4.67 inches of
rain, which is over twice as much as Birmingham has received.
Huntsville has received over 1 inch on three different days.

SCOUTING NORTH AMERICA: 108 in Death Valley was the hottest
yesterday. It was 15 at Stonington, Michigan this morning. Coldest in
Alaska was 1 below at Kuparuk. Our daily check on Whittier, Alaska
shows the snow depth is down to 79 inches. Terrific wild fires in
progress on the South Carolina coast, mainly in the vicinity of Myrtle
Beach. Dozens of homes have been destroyed and more than 1,000 people
have been evacuated. In the Northwest USA, as much as 10-20 inches of
new snow is expected in the next couple of days in the Tetons and Big
Horn Mountain of Wyoming as well as the mountains of SW Montana.
Eventually the snow will get down into the Northern Wasatch Mountains
of Utah as well as the Uinta Mountains in NE Utah.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I love clouds, so every time I walk
Little Miss Molly, I spend much of the time glancing up at the sky,
identifying all of the clouds and which way they are moving. Have been
doing that seemingly since before I was born. Molly does not look
upward as often. However, if our two friends the old crows fly over
cawing, she will look up. The very first morning I walked her six
years ago, two old crows were perched high in the Old Crow Motel
really chewing each other out. We figured divorce was around the
corner. Molly spends more of her time looking over her shoulder to
make sure the big black dog with the crooked tail is not lurking. That
little girl has at least 25 private toilets on the walking track. She
is so interesting to watch. Life goes on.

===================================================================

...Afternoon Highs Reach the 80s...

SOARING TEMPERATURES: If we reach our forecast high of 83 degrees
today, then this will be the warmest day so far in 2009. The warmest
day so far was back on April 10 when the high was 82. The sky will be
partly to mostly sunny today, and while most places will remain dry,
we will mention a chance of isolated showers this afternoon and
evening during the peak of the daytime heating process. The best
chance of a shower will be east of I-65, and even there the chance of
any one spot getting wet is only about one in ten.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: The big warm-up continues; afternoon highs
will rise into the mid 80s with a good supply of sunshine each day.
The weather will look and feel more like summer this weekend, and due
to warm air aloft, the chance of rain is so small that it isn't worth
mentioning in the forecast for now.

LET'S GO RACING: For NASCAR fans, the weather looks ideal for all of
the activities at the Talladega Superspeedway this weekend. Each day
will be dry and warm, with afternoon temperatures in the 81 to 85
degree range. There will be a breeze out of the south averaging 7 to
14 mph, and for now we see no significant chance of rain. Take the
sunscreen.

STADIUMFEST: Our friend Scott Dawson has a big shindig going on at
Samford on Saturday… along with Rick and Bubba and many of our other
friends. What a great day for that event…a sunny sky with a warm
afternoon. See the web site stadiumfest.org for more details on this
great family event.

NEXT WEEK: Our weather should stay dry through the first half of next
week; it looks like our next significant chance of rain will come by
Thursday and Friday (April 30-May 1) as a cold front drifts into
Alabama becomes stationary. The primary storm track will remain well
to the north, so we don't expect any severe weather problems anytime
soon, and temperatures will remain above average.

ON THIS DATE IN 1986: Birmingham's low was 30 degrees, and that still
stands as the latest official freeze on record. So, let the growing
season begin. Looking way ahead, our earliest freeze on record was on
October 18, 1948 when the low was 31.

APRIL HEAT WAVE: Hottest place in the nation yesterday was Death
Valley, CA with 108 degrees. Hot weather was the story for parts of
the Southern Plains; the high at Oklahoma City and Dallas/Fort Worth
was 91. Wichita Falls, Texas soared to 100 degrees.

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase the
WR-100 Midland NOAA Weather Radio, the best selling model in the
nation, at any Publix or Handy TV location in this part of Alabama for
only $29.95. These receivers have the new digital technology that
allows you to choose the counties for which the alarm sounds. Every
Alabama home and business needs one!

...Good Raceway Weekend at Talladega...

ALABAMA TURNING SPRINGLIKE: Well, in reality it is spring, but we
have had some temperatures lately that made some folks (not me) reach
for a light coat or sweater. Now we are headed for some real typical
spring weather and it looks like a very pleasant weekend for the
entire state. Tonight will average about 10 degrees warmer than last
night. After that, look for highs in the 80s all the way through the
weekend and mostly dry weather.

One slight exception to the dry weather—one of our weather models
paints a picture of some scattered light showers developing over NW to
Central Alabama during the day Thursday. Most of those will be
afternoon and evening and a chance of any one garden or yard getting
wet is quite small. Back to mostly sunshine Friday through Sunday.

RACE WEEKEND WEATHER: Excellent for the Talladega races at the
Talladega Speedway. Highs over the weekend will be in the mid 80s and
mostly sunshine. There will be enough wind to keep you from getting hot.

PASSING A MILESTONE: Tomorrow, April 23, is the latest in the year
that Birmingham has ever had a freezing temperature. It was 30 on
April 23, 1986. That means the danger of frost is virtually over until
next Fall. Not a money-your-back guarantee, but a damaging frost would
be unheard of this late. We have had temperatures in the mid 30s as
late as May 4 and a low of 38 as late as May 13.
There was a distinct chill in the air early this morning, especially
over NE Alabama and a bit of light frost in a few spots. A few
selected lows:

31 Broomtown
32 Scrougout
36 Ft. Payne
37 Pinson, Crossville
38 Noccalula Falls
39 Anniston, Cullman

MISCELLANEOUS: Would you believe another earthquake in Central
Alabama at 5:29 this morning. It was centered 10 miles south of
Centreville and was rated 2.9 magnitude. Today is sort of a milestone
also in Alaska. Coldest I could find was a low of zero. That is the
first time to not have sub-zero temperatures since last autumn.
Whittier, Alaska (our daily check point just for the fun of it) has 81
inches of snow on the ground. 109 was the hottest in the USA yesterday
in Death Valley. Coldest in the lower 48 this morning was 23 at Park
Rapids, Minnesota.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: One of the most amazing traits of my
little 9-pound pal, Little Miss Molly, is the tremendous enthusiasm
she greets us with when returning. She must lose track of time because
she is just as enthusiastic and jumping up and down like a ping-pong
ball whether we have been gone for 6 hours or 15 minutes. We came
driving down our street yesterday afternoon and our granddaughter was
walking Molly toward the house. When we passed them, Molly chased us
like a bullet train and as we were getting out of the car, she came
racing across the yard and jumped up on both of us like she had not
seen us for a week. That won many more points with me, but she has
already stored up a million good points with me in the last 6 years.
Life goes on.

...Summer-Like Weather Ahead...

BIG WARM-UP AHEAD: After a cool morning, temperatures will warm nicely
across our state today with a high in the mid 70s. The air will be
very dry, and the sky will be mostly sunny. The warming trend
continues in the days ahead; we are forecast a high in the low 80s
tomorrow, followed by mid 80s on Friday. The summer-like warmth
continues this weekend, with highs in the 81 to 86 degree range
statewide. An upper air ridge of high pressure is responsible for the
warming trend, and it will also push the primary storm track across
North America well to the north of here, meaning no major rain events
anytime soon. A minor disturbance could trigger a few isolated showers
tomorrow afternoon, but at this point the chance of any one spot
getting wet is so small that we have not mentioned it in our formal
forecast. We will take a look at computer model runs later today and
adjust the forecast if needed.

RACE WEEKEND: NASCAR fans streaming into Talladega should be happy
with the weather for race weekend; we are forecasting partly to mostly
sunny days and fair nights. Afternoons will be warm with daily highs
in the 80 to 85 degree range Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The chance
of a shower is so small that we won't mention it for now; we believe
most of East Alabama will be dry on Friday and over the weekend.
Bottom line is that the weather will be excellent for the races and
qualifying runs.

RAIN UPDATE: Birmingham's rain total for 2009 is 20.29", which is
1.21" above average. The heavy rain from this past Sunday actually
missed the Birmingham Airport, where the records are kept.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: A mid-afternoon F2 tornado struck the small
northeast Alabama town of Rainsville without warning, injuring 12
people. Over 30 homes were damaged by the twister and 50 buildings in
the small town received damage, including the city and police and fire
stations. No tornado warning was in effect at the time of the storm
since NWS Doppler radar did not show significant signs of storm
rotation. Ironically a more powerful Doppler radar was being prepared
for installation, very near the location of the tornado (that radar is
in operation now in the community of Hytop, in Northeast Alabama).

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase the

...Relaxing Weather For Awhile...

QUIET AND COMPATIBLE WEATHER: The Alabama story is the story of dry
weather and warmer afternoons as the week goes on and a pleasant
weekend ahead. Another cold front was pushing southward across the
state this afternoon. To be more truthful, we should call it a cool
front, but it was bringing a fresh supply of dry and relatively cool
air into the state. Radar actually showed a small area of light rain
over West Alabama moving south. Much of that is probably not reaching
the ground. Clearing weather is expected across Southern Alabama
tonight, then mostly sunshine each day through most of the weekend.
Some of the colder North Alabama valleys could drop into the upper 30s
tonight, but after tonight it will not be as cool. Last night our
33/40 skywatcher at Scrougout in NE Etowah County reported 0.03 rain
mixed in with just a little bit of light sleet around 4:00 this
morning. Most of the low temperatures last night were in the 40s.

By this weekend, another active low-pressure system will swing out of
the Rockies across the Central Plains to about Oklahoma by Monday
morning. This will not bother Alabama, at least through the weekend.

TALLADEGA RACE WEEKEND: Looks good. Dry warm weather, humidity not
too bad and high temperatures Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the low
to mid 80s.

ELSEWHERE IN THE BIG WIDE WORLD: Parts of South Texas still have a
major drought. At Corpus Christi, only 1.26 inches of rain so far this
year--about 19% of what they would normally receive at this time.
Victoria has received only 2.86 inches. Looks like the final season
snow for Spokane will be around 98 inches, which is 51 inches above
the average. Hot in Southern California. It was 100 yesterday in Los
Angeles and Long Beach and 101 in Pasadena. Death Valley was the
hottest in the country with 105. Selected low temperatures this morning:

6 below zero at Shishmaref, Alaska
28 atop Mt. LeConte in the Great Smoky Mountains
24 at Stanley, Idaho and Yellowstone National Park

No severe weather threats in the good old USA for the next couple of
days. The same system that pounded Alabama over the weekend dumped
1.80 inches of rain on New York City in the last 24 hours, 2.12 inches
at Newark and 1.36 at Atlantic City.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Interesting to note that Little Miss
Molly is not the only dog afraid of thunder. Sheryl Frank, who has the
Appalachian Mountain border collie rescue, says that every time it
thunders her border collie runs into the bathroom and wraps herself
around the toilet. She wedges between the tub and the toilet. Her
other dogs jump into the bathtub. Fortunately we did not have any
thunder at the Molly house Sunday. On our long walk yesterday
afternoon, the big black dog, with the crooked tail that always points
toward Anniston, jumped out of the hedgerow and surprised us. Both
dogs ran three circles around me and then Molly begged to be picked up—
she was afraid. That little girl actually tried to kiss me while I was
holding her. Won many points with me.

...Low 80s By Thursday Afternoon...

BREEZY AND COOL TODAY: A deep upper trough over the eastern third of
the nation will bring breezy and relatively cool weather to Alabama
today; we figure most places will see a high in the mid to upper 60s,
about 7 to 10 degrees below average values for mid to late April in
Alabama.

There will be a few cloudy periods during the day, and even some
outside risk of a few showers, mainly north of U.S. 278 (north of a
line from Hamilton to Cullman to Gadsden). The southern half of the
state should enjoy a sunny day with a high around 70.

SUMMER PREVIEW COMING: The entire upper air pattern over the nation
will do a big flip flop in coming days; the upper trough over the east
will move on, and a warm upper ridge will build across the Deep South
late in the week and over the weekend. This will bring the warmest
weather so far this season to Alabama; we expect a high around 80 on
Thursday, followed by low 80s Friday, and low to mid 80s over the
weekend. Humidity levels will be creeping upward as well, giving us
the first real summer feel in 2009. For now it looks like the warm air
aloft associated with the upper ridge will keep us dry; any showers
over the weekend should be few and far between.

RACE WEEKEND: Hard to believe, but this this race weekend at
Talladega. Warm and dry weather is the story for the Talladega
Superspeedway, with partly to mostly sunny days and clear nights late
in the week and over the weekend. We are projecting afternoon highs at
Talladega in the 80 to 83 degree range both Saturday and Sunday.

16 TORNADOES! National Weather Service survey teams from Huntsville
and Montgomery were able to identify 16 tornado tracks across the
northern two-thirds of the state from Sunday's severe weather event.
Within the Birmingham NWS county warning area; the most significant
tornadoes were found atop Straight Mountain in Blount County, and on
the Alabama/Georgia border in the Phenix City/Columbus area. Both of
those tornadoes were rated EF-2 on the enhanced Fujita scale. There
were two tornado fatalities in Alabama; one in Priceville, in Morgan
County, and the other in the community of Asbury in the far eastern
part of Marshall County.

ON THIS DATE IN 1967: Deadly F4 tornado strikes school at Belvidere,
IL at dismissal time. High school students were being loaded onto
buses as the twister ripped directly through the bus loading area. The
elementary school students had already been picked up and dropped off
by the buses. 12 of the buses were overturned by the winds. Students
were blown through an adjacent field and makeshift stretchers were
formed from plywood from nearby houses. 13 students were killed and
300 injured at the school. Another school bus was destroyed near
Harvard IL as the driver and students took shelter in a ditch. The
Belvidere tornado was part of an outbreak of 48 tornadoes that day
across the Upper Midwest.

...The Weather Settles...

A QUIET WEATHER WEEK: We had enough severe weather Sunday to last us
a long time and I believe that every single person in the state is
happy to see some settled weather this week.

This has been a very active spring, but we see little or no threat of
storms all the way into the weekend. We do have a second cold front
coming down the pike that will push through Alabama during the day
Tuesday. The chance of it producing a shower is so small that we left
it out of the forecast. The front that moved through last night has
pushed well down into the Gulf of Mexico and over to the Atlantic
Seaboard. This will give us three fairly chilly nights in a row with
lows in the low to mid 40s, but daytimes will be comfortable. Toward
the end of the week, it will really feel springlike as temperatures
climb into the lower 80s.

There were widespread reports of damage Sunday and Sunday night. Some
of the worst damage seemed to be in NE Alabama, also in Blount and
Shelby Counties. The National Weather Service has teams in the field
today inspecting damage, especially where there were apparent
tornadoes. They will be issuing a series of reports over the next few
days with their findings.

AN ACTIVE YEAR: It may or may not surprise you that so far in 2009
Alabama has had the second largest number reports of severe weather
with 429. That is second only to Texas. Please remember that these are
preliminary reports and most of the time that number is reduced when
it is found that there was more than one report of the same storm.

RAIN AMOUNTS: Most areas had decent rain amounts yesterday. A few
examples:

3.12 Pelham
2.31 Helena
2.41 Madison
1.64 Pell City
1.84 Huntsville
1.29 Anniston

ROAMING: A hot 102 was the USA hottest at Anaheim, California Sunday.
Coldest this morning in the lower 48 was 18 at Houlton, Maine. In
Alaska, it was 15 below zero at Nuiqsut. Our daily check on the
Whittier snow depth shows 85 inches still on the ground. Nome has 56
inches. That was quite a snowstorm in the Colorado Rockies over the
last several days. Some places in the mountains west of Denver
received several feet. There was a storm total of 52 inches at
Pinecliffe, Colorado.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: One of these days Little Miss Molly is
going to disown me. An usually large number of days this year, when I
get so busy weatherwise, that I have little time for her. For the love
she gives us, she does not expect that much in return. I sure hate it
when I have to go 2 or 3 days with little attention to her. She sure
lets me know it in a pleasant way by coming in my office, sitting and
staring at me like she is almost frowning. At least I have been giving
her some AAA belly rubs the last few days. She loves those very much.
Life goes on.
